MARTIN LEWIS

Money Saving Expert

Martin Lewis shares his top tips

Mental Health ental health issues and debt are a marriage made in hell – and, worse, each feeds off the other. If you or someone you know is hit by this, you’re not alone. This is one of the biggest and most hidden financial problems affecting the UK. The more we talk about it, the better, so I want to take you through what’s happening and some tips if you’re affected. The statistics are horrific. Here are just three of them: 1) You’re four to six times more likely to have debt crisis if you’ve mental health issues. 2) Half those seeking debt help have mental health issues. 3) The treatment time for clinical depression can be 18 months longer for those with financial worries too. Breaking this relationship has been a passion of mine for a long time. So having planned it for years, a few weeks ago I launched the new Money and Mental Health Policy Institute (www.moneyandmentalhealth.org.uk) with a brilliant full-time team I’m funding for at least four years. The aim of this charity is simple: to reduce the number of people affected by the issue. And that number is huge - when I’ve written about it on social media I’ve been swamped by the responses. Here are just a couple: “I have bipolar and was given huge amounts of credit which I spent while on a manic high. I am now in so much debt there’s no way out, which has an impact on my depression.” “When I’m in a depressed state I find that I can spend recklessly, without thinking about the bigger picture. Having financial struggles does make you stressed, anxious and cause sleep issues, which can then all lead to further depression. It’s a vicious circle.”

What can be done about it? Thankfully over the past decade, the financial services sector has improved its attitude and procedures when dealing with people with mental health illness once they’re already in the mire. So the Policy Institute’s focus is prevention, to come up with solutions, research them and then lobby to get them in place. Here’s a sample of the type of ideas we’re

4 October/November 2016

looking at, both are based on spending sprees, which are common with bipolar disorder and depression. - Credit freeze. Allow people to voluntarily put a freeze at the credit reference agencies, so they can’t apply for any new credit. To unlock it would take a set time – say 30 or 90 days – giving breathing space if your decision making ability is temporarily impaired. - High-control account options. Go abroad and debit and credit card firms freeze your accounts if they detect unusual spending patterns. Why not allow people to voluntarily apply that to all spending? Then if unusual spending patterns happen, their card is cut off for a set time, say 10 weeks, unless a nominated trusted friend or mental health case worker agrees it should be unfrozen, because the high spend is, for example, just due to a house move. Of course there are many other conditions too, such as dementia, which require other solutions. (go to http:// www.moneyandmentalhealth.org.uk / join-our-research-panel/) Yet that’s all in the future. If you or someone you care for has issues now, what do you do? Well my free Mental Health and Debt Booklet at www.money savingexpert.com/mentalhealth takes you through step-by-step. Here are some tips from it.

1. Speak to a non-profit debt help agency. If you’re in debt crisis, then

<http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk> , <http://www.stepchange.org> <http:// www.stepchange.org> , <http:// www.nationaldebtline.org> and especially <http://www.capuk.org> can help – I say especially as it also does emotional counselling too.

2. Can you cut the interest rate? The lower it is the more of your repayments clear the actual debt. A balance transfer credit card can shift debt to 0% for 40 months.

3. Consider informing your bank. Once a lender is aware that a customer has a mental health condition, it has to make adjustments. The Lending Code says banks should consider keeping a debt in-house rather than passing it to debt collectors, and they should make court action the last resort. Though telling your bank is a decision to discuss carefully with a caseworker or debt counsellor.

4. You can’t be discriminated against for your mental health. In

other words, if the fact you’ve declared your illness to a bank affects your ability to get other products with them, such as a mortgage, it would likely breach the Equality Act.

5. Know the early warning signs. Even when people plunge into debt, issues like depression don’t bite overnight. Look out for tension headaches, arguments at work, back pain or bad skin. And seek help.

6. Banking control if you have bipolar. A few banks have minor

procedures to allow you to register your mental health issues and stop your overdraft going beyond a certain amount. Bipolar disorder sufferers, who may be prone to overspending during a manic episode, could consider discussing this with their bank. It’s worth chatting through with a debt counsellor or case worker first.

7. Consider adding a note on your credit file. If you overspend when you

are unwell, you can volunteer to add information on mental health problems to your credit files in what’s called a ‘notice of correction’. This alerts potential lenders so they don’t lend further credit. This can be added or removed whenever you want though. Yet it may stop you borrowing when you are well. 8. Consider paying bills by direct debit. This can simplify your finances, helping to ensure bills get paid when you’re ill. Yet while direct debits for gas and electricity bills, home phone and broadband can save you money, home and car insurers charge you interest so annual payments are better.

9. Prioritise heating and eating.

Don’t simply pay those who hassle you the hardest. The debt counsellors above can help.

10. There’s no such thing as an unsolvable debt. For as long as I’ve

been doing my job, I’ve never once seen a debt case that isn’t solvable. It may not be easy, it may not be quick, but I want you to know it is ALWAYS doable. If you start to sort it out, it does get better. Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. HEALTH

“I worry that someday everyone will find out that I’m a fraud” mposter Syndrome - the experience where someone feels like an imposter or a fraud because they think that they have deceived the people around them – is found to be more common than first thought. We think that we have got to a certain level in our life by chance or luck and that our peers are on the verge of discovering that we are no good. For example a CEO of a large company becomes preoccupied by her thoughts that she does not know that much about business, that she will slip up at any moment and her peers will find out. This is also in spite of the praise and accolades she has amassed over time. Another example is a student who has just recently graduated from university with first class honours, feels that his friends and family will eventually know that he was lucky in the assessments and that really he just wasted the last 4 years.

tendency to view others as better. At the end of the day we are all thinking that others are better than we are, so who is right? Remember that you are good enough, you do what you can do and you do it well. And remember, making mistakes does not make you a fraud. Richard Cave BSc DTC DIP CHD Psychotherapist

A common example is when a mother who works hard to provide for her children with the best life possible, has this overwhelming anxiety that other mothers will see she is a fraud. She will feel that nothing she does will compare to the great job her friends are doing with their own children. Despite our success, we just cannot shake this feeling of being a fraud. With Imposter Syndrome we can even convince ourselves that we are so bad that we do not even have Imposter Syndrome and we are faking that too. Here are a few tips to counter this experience: Accept that you have some role in your success - We often attribute things to luck, “I was just lucky with the results”, or we discount performing better than others at that time “I only got the job because others must have messed up”. It is not always fair and other influences can be present but you did do something to get where you are now. We create opportunities for ourselves, we say yes to challenges and then we work hard to get the results required. Accept that you do play a part. Stop comparing yourself to others - When comparing ourselves with others it is easy to fall into the trap of viewing their strengths and success, and comparing them with our failures and imperfections. Imposter Syndrome affects more people than you think and we all have a To advertise please call 07725 908 728 or email info@dhplocal.co.uk

HOBBIES

Confessions of a Spanish Tutor ola!, My name is Enrique Azocar; I am a Spanish tutor as well as a professional artist. I impart one-to-one Spanish session as well as art teaching sessions and I live in Hexham area since the year 2000. Enrique Azocar I always thought that my English was excellent. Well... but someone who lives right up there proved me wrong! The first two years I arrived at the North, I had to re-learn not just my English but also to understand local accents such as the Geordie and Northumbrian. They were my biggest challenges. Gosh! It was a hard test if you don’t mind me saying it. Now I can enjoy local stories and news at the local pub. I must confess that after two pints, everything is more entertained and relaxed. I do like challenges in general, but not all of them at the same time though; some could say that I am stubborn, but I would prefer to say that I am a very determined person instead, probably like you. Especially in doing something that I know it could benefit my life.

Learning a language can be very useful. Especially when you need to look for certain amenities on your trip holidays to Spain. Let us say: a good tapas restaurant, a hotel, a doctor, or directions in general of some interest places in Madrid, Malaga or Benalmadena. Equally important is to understand the social language and body language within the culture. What it is socially polite in the British society not necessary feels in the same way within the Spanish culture. For example, Britons in general, don’t shout when they speak, they seem to whisper compared with us. We, indeed shout, even worse if we are in a political discussion.

my student ‘shout’ a lot. I make them feel local in a foreign land. That helps them on how they should ‘perform’ without any hesitation in Spain, so they integrate as fast as they can with the culture. A great benefit for both parties. Local Spanish people feel that you are making an effort, and they pay back with so much respect. Probably you will be responded in English, not because they want to practice their English. It is because we would like to make life easier for you. So do you still thinking that learning Spanish is just speaking the language? Would that be enough? Consequently, speaking the language is also to understand each other’s social behaviour, in the end, it is a secure recipe of falling deeply in love with any culture. Since I have lived here for sixteen years, I can realise that the Spanish language indeed could be more direct than the English language. Spanish language ‘seems’ to appear more brutal, but trust me it is not; especially when you add “Por favor” (please) at the end of a phrase. That will do the trick. When you become an assiduous client at the same local bakery to buy your bread, eventually you will drop “Please” because you have become a regular, familiar to the baker. (Hola, dáme pan José!). For us, this sense of familiarity is a presence in the Spanish culture if it is not the most important thing at any Spanish social level. My Spanish sessions are imparted mostly into one-to-one meetings. I like that; I enjoy giving time to English speakers because we can talk the same ‘language’ in the end. Do you struggle with your Spanish? Probably as I did with my English in my first years, but I am sure you will achieve step by step your goals in your own time. English is speaking everywhere, but you still want to challenge yourself, and that is all that I need from you. Buena Suerte! Enrique | mob 07587 148 513

Or for example, If I need to buy bread from a Spanish local bakery I will ask for a loaf of bread just saying: “Déme pan, por favor” (Give me bread, please). It is direct and straightforward. English might be: “Could you give me some bread, please?” (it sounds gentle actually). Are Spanish people more impatient perhaps? For some Spanish locals, the same phrase in English might seem too long! And... I want my bread now! Just different ways you see? In the end, nothing is right or wrong. Just different ways, different customs. Wouldn’t you agree? Some of these observations make my Spanish sessions very entertaining. MOTORING

Renault Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav reviously seen as the teenager that refused to grow up, the Renault Clio celebrates its 25th birthday this year – and with a host of new styling and design features, could this be the most mature Clio yet? What is it? Originally launched in 2012, this is Renault’s face-lifted fourth-generation Clio. Mechanical upgrade comes with the new 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel powertrain, previously seen in Nissan’s Qashqai, and the option of a manual transmission coupled with the pre-existing TCe 120 petrol engine. Renault has poured a lot of resources into styling – the exterior includes a new grille, re-profiled bumpers and an LED light signature, while C-shaped daytime running lights can be specified on certain models. Cabin quality has improved significantly, with new upholstery, matt chrome trim and soft-touch materials – no more scratchy plastics to be found here. With 30 different colour combinations, five roof decals, and four exterior customisation packs, the model has been dubbed ‘the most stylish Clio yet’. What’s under the bonnet? The pokey dCi 110 diesel powerplant is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, providing 108 bhp. 0-60mph takes 11.19 seconds, and top speed is 121mph. The diesel engine can be noisy when the car is at idle or moving slowly, but fades to an indistinct hum at 3,000 revs. The dCi 110 returns an impressive 80.7mpg, while emitting just 90g/km CO2. What’s the spec like? Spec on the £17,755 dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav is extensive, with an updated sound and 10 October/November 2016

infotainment system with Bose speakers and the new R-link connectivity system featuring as standard.

doesn’t cut out at unfortunate moments - as it does in some of the Clio’s B-segment competitors.

However, the new diesel engine is only available in this top-level trim, meaning that drivers looking to spend less are left with the option of one of the pre-existing powertrains.

A driver-activated Ecomode, which is standard on the Dynamique Nav model and above, reportedly improves fuel economy by up to 12%.

The basic spec Clio starts from £10,495, meaning the range includes both affordable and high-end (for the B-segment) options.

Verdict Renault claims the Clio is more versatile and mature than its predecessor, but with the new diesel powertrain only available in the top-spec model, we feel the car maker is shoehorning itself into the more up-market end of the B-segment.

Any rivals? There are a host of affordable rival superminis including the DS3, Citroen C4 Cactus and Ford’s Fiesta. Drivers wanting a more up-market experience can opt for the Audi A1, which the Renault is no match for. What’s it like to drive? This longer and wider Clio, with its sportier appearance and increased cabin space, delivers better handling. The car’s agility and body control is improved, but not enough to make the drive markedly different to its predecessor. The 108bhp engine is powerful enough and the car accelerates with ease in any gear. The stop/start feature, standard on some models, works well and

The face-lift does well to refresh the product and keep it relevant. But with 13 million units sold worldwide since it was launched in 1991, and 12,589 sold in the UK alone between January and June this year, we very much doubt the Clio will be going out of fashion any time soon. Facts at a glance: Model: Renault Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav Price: £17,755 Engine: Four cylinder, 1.5 dCi 110 Power: 108bhp 0-60mph: 11.19secs Max speed: 121mph Economy: 80.7mpg Emissions: 90g/km

FOR November

SCORPIO

By Astrologer Russell Grant

ARIES March 21st - April 20th Your love life will sizzle with excitement in the early days of November. If you don't have a partner, you could find one at a theatre, concert or gallery. There's a good chance you will fall head over heels in love with a powerful executive. Are you already in a relationship? Be receptive to your amour's overtures. The two of you will have fun reconnecting. An impressive amount of money could land in your bank account on the 14th, thanks to the Full Moon. Use some of this cash to further your career. A smart interview suit, new computer and advertising campaign are all good professional investments. Beware of making promises you can't deliver during the second half of the month. Setting up a loved one for disappointment will create tremendous resentment. The New Moon on the 29th will force you into unfamiliar territory. Ask for guidance when you're not sure what to do or how to behave. TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Your love life will be enriching at the beginning of November. This is the best time of the entire year to get engaged or married. Entering a business alliance is also looking good. Two heads are better than one at the beginning of November. The Full Moon on the 14th will prompt a loved one to give you a beautiful gift. Be sure to show your appreciation for this generous token. Work could feel oppressive during the second half of the month, due to an annoying repair project. It may be difficult to find peace and quiet. Exercise patience with a colleague who wears on your nerves. Show respect for their superior knowledge and expertise. You may need their help on the 29th, when the New Moon makes you aware of limited resources. By teaming up, you can produce impressive work on a tiny budget. Summon your creative powers as November turns to December. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st Work will be financially and emotionally rewarding in the opening days of November. If you're unhappy with your job, look for another. An influential friend will write you an impressive reference. The Full Moon on the 14th will prompt you to withdraw from public life. Solitary pursuits like reading, writing and communing with nature can energise you. It's also possible you will be spending more time with a beloved pet. Your romantic partner will give you the strength to take a bold risk. Abandon the status quo for something new and daring. You may experience a setback, but treat it as a learning experience. The next time, you will be better prepared to meet challenges. The New Moon on the 29th warns against mixing business with pleasure. If you're looking for love, find it with someone who doesn't work with you. Similarly, it isn't a good idea to form a professional alliance with a friend. CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd An exciting opportunity to travel will arrive at the beginning of November; there's never been a better time to take a dream holiday. If you're single, you will meet someone special on this journey. Are you already in a relationship? You and your amour will enjoy a second honeymoon. If you're looking for work during the first half of the month, you'll have to be particularly aggressive. Don't be afraid to discuss your talent and accomplishments during job interviews. The Full Moon on the 14th brings a successful conclusion to a group project. As a result, bigger and better opportunities will be offered to you. Be selective about which jobs you accept. It's important to hold out for work that offers a creative challenge. Don't let your romantic partner eclipse your needs towards the end of the month. The New Moon on the 29th will prompt you to get attention for a health matter. LEO July 24th - August 23rd Money from a grant, loan or scholarship will become available in early November. These additional resources will allow you to lead a more comfortable life. Having more time for creative pursuits will give you an attractive glow throughout the first half of the month. If you're single, you could meet someone special at a sporting event or gym. You'll have to play the aggressor in this relationship. The Full Moon on the 14th marks an exciting turning point in your career. You could land a high profile job, get a big pay rise or be given an impressive promotion. During the second half of the month, you should be as discreet as possible at work. Don't discuss your personal life with colleagues or you will later regret it. The New Moon on the 29th warns against taking emotional and financial risks. It's best to maintain the status quo as November turns to December.

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd Your love life will sizzle with excitement in early November. This is a great time to embark on a romance. Getting engaged or married is also possible. If you're already in a serious relationship, take your amour on a glamorous trip. A financial windfall makes it possible to purchase some new technical equipment during the first half of the month. The Full Moon on the 14th brings the satisfying conclusion of a legal matter. As a result, you'll have more time for your favourite hobbies and creative pursuits. The second half of November could put some strain on finances. Be as frugal as possible. Fortunately, you don't need to spend a lot of money to have fun with your nearest and dearest. Spend quality time with friends and family, preparing big meals and playing board games. Launching a home based business could be profitable on the 29th, thanks to the New Moon. LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd Moneymaking opportunities will abound in early November. Take this opportunity to apply for a dream job or ask for a pay rise. If you work for yourself, this is the best time of the entire year to raise your prices. Good customers are willing to pay extra for superior products and services. The Full Moon on the 14th will pave the way for a passionate encounter. Let down your defences with someone who has proven their loyalty. There's also a good chance you will get a significant financial windfall from an inheritance or legal settlement. The second half of the month should be devoted to building solid relationships with your neighbours. Having a good standing in the community will pay off in unexpected ways. Changes to your domestic routine are inevitable at the end of November. Be open to make adjustments for the sake of a relative. The New Moon on the 29th could put extra chores on your plate. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd You're feeling good and looking good in early November. Take this opportunity to embark on a passionate romance. If you're already in a relationship, you and your amour will be especially affectionate throughout the first half of November. This would be a lovely time to give your partner a beautiful token of your affection. The Full Moon on the 14th marks a turning point in a close relationship. A business or romantic partnership will dramatically improve your social stature. You will have to spend money to make money during the second half of the month. Invest in a new car, computer or smartphone. Don't listen to petty criticism as November turns to December. A jealous rival will do everything in their power to shake your confidence. If the New Moon on the 29th results in a loss of income, remain positive. This will be a welcome opportunity to find more rewarding work. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st Solitary pursuits will give you a welcome chance to recharge your batteries in early November. Working on a compelling creative project will be lots of fun. Don't show your work to others until you're completely happy with the results. The Full Moon on the 14th will attract a terrific job offer. Having regular pay will allow you to build financial stability. If you've been struggling to sell a property, you'll be successful during the second half of the month. Turn a deaf ear to friends who tell you to hold out for more money. The New Moon on the 29th warns against adopting a different look. If you want to make a change, devote more time to creative pursuits. Playing sports can be another way to let off steam. Being outdoors never fails to lift your spirits. Head outside even if the weather is bad. Fresh air will have a therapeutic effect. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th Spending time with friends and family is strongly advised in the opening days of November. You have a tendency to be reclusive when the chips are down. Learning to ask for help will be empowering. Call a sympathetic friend when you feel overwhelmed. Their words of encouragement will keep stress at bay. The Full Moon on the 14th could cause a legal decision to be rendered in your favour. Once this issue has been resolved, you'll have an opportunity to satisfy your own agenda. Make more time for the artistic pursuits you love. Going to the theatre, watching movies and listening to music will give you an attractive glow that's hard to resist. Be ready to set healthy boundaries with a demanding employer. In the past, you were willing to do the work of three people. Now you want more private time. The New Moon on the 29th will allow you to take an all too brief break. AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th An opportunity for career advancement will arrive in early November. Don't be afraid of taking a job that involves a great deal of responsibility. You'll enjoy assuming a new challenge. It may be necessary to intimidate detractors who poke fun at your unorthodox methods. The sooner you establish you mean business, the more successful you will be. The Full Moon on the 14th will find you spending quality time with your family. This is a wonderful chance to reconnect with your nearest and dearest. Attending a recital, game or performance will be lots of fun. The second half of November will be a wonderfully social time. Attend as many parties and casual get togethers. The New Moon on the 29th will cause you to question your priorities. Devoting more time to the activities you love will create a scandal. People who have come to rely on you to perform their dirty work will protest. Ignore these complaints. PISCES February 20th - March 20th The opportunity to travel, study or write will arrive in early November. Expanding your horizons will give you an attractive glow that is hard to resist. Assuming a more public role at work could be in the cards. Don't hesitate to step into the spotlight during the first half of the month. The Full Moon on the 14th will allow you to capitalise on expert knowledge. Providing training for a group of professionals will be a stimulating challenge. It will be easier to command respect during the second half of the month, when people will be more receptive to your creative approach. Resist the temptation to lend or borrow money in late November. Nothing will destroy a relationship faster than mixing finance with friendship. The New Moon on the 29th warns against accepting additional work responsibilities. It will take more time to master your existing duties. Don't rush to climb the ladder to success too soon.

PETS

Pets’ Corner Microchipping your Dog Ann Haldon

ew legislation has made it compulsory to have your dog microchipped if it is eight weeks old or over. The government’s aim in introducing the new rules from 6th April 2016 is to relieve the pressure on local authorities and animal welfare charities to care for lost dogs. The legislation also encourages responsible pet ownership, and helps to protect dogs in society generally. Microchipping your dog will make it easier for you to be reunited should they be lost or stolen, as your contact details are placed on an approved database.

How does microchipping work? A tiny electronic chip is implanted under your dog’s skin, between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique number which correlates with your contact details, so it’s important to make sure that these are up to date. Microchipping doesn’t hurt your dog, and no anaesthetic is needed. It can be carried out by a vet, in pet retail outlets, re-homing centres, or via charity organisations such as Dogs Trust who carry out the procedure free of charge. What if your dog isn’t microchipped? If you don’t microchip your dog you risk a fine of £500, and even criminal prosecution in some cases. You’ll receive a warning notice giving you 21 days in which

to comply. Dog wardens and other enforcers including community support officers have the right to seize your dog and make sure it is microchipped, and to reclaim the cost from you later. It’s also a requirement under the new legislation that your contact details are kept up to date on the approved database. http://www.petplan.co.uk/ microchip-dog-law-info/ https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/ help-advice/microchipping/ microchipping-faq-page
