Three Teachers Say Farewell in ‘09 After many years of teaching, three esteemed educators move on to new adventures.

Bill Cunningham After 36 years of teaching at Dana Hills, veteran science teacher Bill Cunningham had decided to “return to a life with more balance.” His decision to retire developed within the past six weeks because he believes that there are “many challenges and opportunities left ahead of [him].” In his free time, Cunningham hopes to spend time with his 91-year old mother, travel to several locations, and mentor his son. Cunningham has taught various science classes throughout his career at Dana including, AP Chemistry, Chemistry, HMO Chemistry, Astronomy, Earth Science, and General Science. Furthermore, he has been advisor to clubs such as, Character Counts Club, and Ju-

nior Achievement Club. Cunningham added, “I have been on nearly every committee or group associated with DHHS over the last 36 years.” Although he is looking forward to “freedom from grading homework, writing letters of recommendation, and spending 14 hour days doing school-related work,” Cunningham admitted that what he will miss most from teaching will be the students, teachers, administrators, and staff. -Pia Bhathal

Amidst hard “economic” times (no pun intended) and a tense mood in the education business, Wilburton decided to retire from teaching to spend more time doing the things he really loves. Though he is ending his teaching career, Wilburton will continue coaching the boys’ and girls’ golf teams. Junior Bobby Uchida commended, “He has been really dedicated to the team, and he’s only had the team’s best interest in mind.” In addition to coaching, Wilburton also plans to continue pursuing his golf individually. Aside from sports, Wilburton will continue to enjoy the company of his two grown daughters and wife Nancy Wilburton. -Lexi Cotcamp

Phil Wilburton After over 30 years at Dana Hills, Phil Wilburton will retire from teaching this year. Wilburton has taught Economics and World History at Dana, in addition to coaching both girls and boys golf.

Star Sanford

Star Sanford, who teaches Content Reading, Reading Improvement, and English I, will be retiring after over 28 years of teaching. “It’s just been a really great year,” recalls Sanford. ”Teaching has always been very good to me.” Looking forward to retirement, Sanford is planning on traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, and playing with her favorite golden retriever, Dave. Just a few of the places she plans to visit are Europe and Hawaii. Sanford has always enjoyed teaching, which she explains as “exciting, fulfilling, and challenging.” Stanford comments that one of her favorite aspects of teaching is “seeing her students, mostly freshmen, grow up to be mature young people.” Her main goal throughout her career has been to teach students to enjoy reading for pleasure and value, and she has worked diligently to achieve that. She encourages students to be lifelong readers or pursue a career in teaching. Sanford’s husband, Ken, has been working on campus for many years now, and will continue his job as a proctor. -Annie Bubinski

“Having just had my first son, I look with high expectations at the senior class of 2009, searching for suitable leaders for the next generation. Fortunately, this class is of a high enough caliber to far surpass such hopes.” -Dr. Nye “Vote early, vote often.” - Ms. McIntosh

“Live your dream. Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you want to do or what you want to be.” -Mr. Schwartzberg

“Sooner or later it all gets real.” -Mr. Speidel

“Fredrick Douglass once said, ‘Agitate, agitate, agitate.’ In response to what he wanted to do with his life.” -Mr. Hulse

“Always question authority.” -Mr. Weinell

”I define nothing. Not beauty, not patriotism. I take each thing as it is, without prior rules about what it should be.” -Bob Dylan, Mr. Young

“Don’t be bad, be good.” -Mr. Degen

“Do a good deed and pass it forward.” -Mrs. Sexton

Some Words of Wisdom from our Educators

“”There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” ’” –-Shakespeare, Mrs. Pettijohn

“Where letters cease, darkness covers the land.” (Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini) Keep learning, keep thinking, keep writing.” -Ms. Fenstermaker

“Twent y years f ro m n o w y o u w i l l be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain (get involved, get in trouble, have fun, and don’t be afraid to try new things…Not drugs though.) -Mr. Sampson

“Don’t part with your illusions. When they are gone, you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.” -Mark Twain, Mrs. Irwin

“Wag More, Bark Less.” -Mrs. Sandford “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.” -Theodore Roosevelt, Mr. Valderrama

“They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety” – Benjamin Franklin In other words, protect your earned civil liberties with your life; never allow them to be revoked, not for ANY reason! Love you all, Mrs. Mairs

“No one gets out alive!” -Mr. Guarino As you set forth on this arduous journey called life, remember these few words from the sage, Willy Wonka: “A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” Live, Love, and most of all…Laugh! -Mrs. Reischl

And finally, to Jake and Tyler, I leave my heart, and the hope that you will be able to fill Geoff’s shoes. May you all continue to push the limits and exceed expectations. And as for the incoming staffers, know you were all chosen for a reason. Do me proud.

Scholar of Scholars: Jeremy Chang UC Los Angeles man.

Jeremy Chang is the

Three-and-a-half weeks ago, in the middle of physics, Chang was called out by guidance counselor Bonnie Borden, who then proceeded to surprise him with the news that he had earned the prestigious title of Scholar of Scholars. “I didn’t expect it at all,” he stated. “Roger [Chin]’s always been first in the class, so I was shocked when she told me.” Chang, also known as Jer-Bear, has come a long way since his early days at school. Once a bitter, irritable child who kicked and whacked his backpack at his fellow students in elementary school, Chang now enlightens all his peers, teachers, and family members with his endearing humility and sarcastic remarks. “I don’t think Jeremy has ever openly approved of me or anything that I’ve done, yet I am completely content,” stated his best friend of seven years, George Chang. “Just having the honor of being acquainted with such an accomplished person is good enough for me.” And no, they’re not related. Despite having once been quite hostile to members of the opposite gender, Chang impressively snagged a college girlfriend as a sophomore, who he met one summer at orchestra camp. Even so, dozens of girls, especially junior Anais Ziae-Mohseni, still flock to the UCLA-bound graduate. “Every time I see JerBear he just brightens my day,” claimed Ziae-Mohseni. Among the seven universities he was accepted by, “Jer-Bear” was attracted to UCLA because of “the location and the reputation. I’m excited that it’s in the middle of LA, where there’s always going to be something to do.” Although he is eager to leave the familiar faces and places of his hometown, Chang will be leaving behind four years of commitment to Dana’s tennis team, three to orchestra, and two to the yearbook staff. With 11 AP courses under his belt, which he earned scores of 5 on all but two of the tests, Chang plans on majoring in biology or pre-med and anticipates joining a fraternity. Just kidding. “Why would you even ask me that?” he responded without a second thought. Always the humanitarian, he strives to one day become a doctor, eventually landing a job in southern California, following at least ten more years of formal education. But for now, he looks forward to “spending a few last months with George before parting ways. I’ll miss the mere representation of EJ Debowski.” - Tiffany Han

VALEDICTORIANS Austin Arruda Saddleback

Brendon Ballo USC

Ari Baugh Biola

Despite being among the Dana Hills elite, Austin Arruda still finds time to spend on extreme mountain biking. “I think I enjoy mountain biking because of the rush it gives me when I do something awesome,” Arruda stated. After attending Saddleback, Arruda hopes to transfer to UC Santa Cruz because “it has a really good environmental science program.” He hopes to incorporate environmental science into his career in the future. Commented Arruda, “I really want a job that involves the outdoors because I want a job that involves me interacting with nature.” Although he is a selfproclaimed “senior who is just over school,” Arruda will “miss “eating lunch in Mr. Sullivan’s room with my friends the most.” He also added that he will miss “watching Jeff Adam run bleachers with my calculator in his hand, while trying to beat my Tetris test scores.” This sounds complicated to an outsider, but Arruda had a good chuckle while recalling this event. Arruda said his plans for the future are a bit hazy right now, but he quickly added, “I really think that in life, the journey is more important than your final destination.” -Tyler Hartung

Brendon “Miami Vice” Ballo is a man of strong morals with even stronger abs. Ballo achieved a grade point average of 4.26; not too shabby. He played on the basketball team, loved The Calculus, and was the president of the Ultimate Frisbee Club. Ballo’s will be attending the University of Southern California in the fall to study business. “I am so super stoked to go to USC, because I have heard that it is fun to go to college,” remarked Ballo. “I also want to make loads of money.” The most influential people in Ballo’s life are his mother and Aldus Snow. “Aldus Snow taught me that you can look fabulous and act flamboyant and have a lovely British accent but slay mad [expletive],” explained Ballo. He will be missed for being the king of Tank Top Thursday and always maintaining a radiant smile throughout the day. Ballo’s favorite childhood pastimes include surfing and watching Dumb and Dumber.

“To know God, love God, serve God, and live a surrendered life for God” is Ari Baugh’s goal in life. Last year, Baugh was a Worship Director of Dana’s EHAD Christian Bible Study club, and she is now co-president of the club, renamed Revive. Throughout her high school years, she has been an active participant in her church’s student worship band and adult vocal team. Baugh is musically gifted, being able to play the piano and guitar, and has sung in SOCSA choir for four years. She looks forward to attending Biola University because of its Music in Worship major, which will allow her to continue learning more about her faith. Eventually, Baugh wants to be part of a worship band and compose her own contemporary Christian music. Although she is excited to begin her college education, she will miss her family, friends, and church youth group. At Dana, Baugh has participated in several school sports – track, cross country,

Tyler Baetz U. of Southern California Tyler Baetz will be attending the University of Southern California next year to major in computer science. Surprisingly, he will strive to refrain from playing World of Warcraft without suffering from relapses. Originally his plans for his post-college life included talking to girls. Instead he has resolved to do anything that comes to mind, so long as it isn’t illegal. Throughout the duration of time that Baetz has graced Dana Hills with his uncanny good looks, unrivaled gaming skills, and rugged appearance, have helped him morally crush Peter Adams in their one-sided debates concerning the superiority of video games over sports. These were memorable moments for him. Before he leaves, he wants to make sure that it established as a golden rule to “never do any homework that conflicts with raid times.” When asked for a concluding thought about his long, arduous four years at Dana Hills, he simply gave a heartwarming smile. ☺ - Ben Lim

Michelle Lee, Alanna Eilenberg, Kiefer Greenspan, Zach Satterfield it’s okay for me to break out in song and dance.” Also known for a face that can erupt in a smile within .02 seconds, Brillon’s cheerful spirit and genuine friendliness invigorate all her peers. As for academics, this scholar’s favorite class was AP Language with Connie Pettijohn. “It made me a better writer and thinker. I wasn’t afraid to get passionate about literature.” Brillon will be pursuing these passions at UC Berkeley next fall, where she plans to major in either literature, theater, or both. “I’m ready to take a bunch of classes in everything,” revealed Brillon. When taking a break from mastering life, Brillon indulges in her “Gilmore Girls”, “Jeopardy”, “Harry Potter”, “Lord of the Rings”, and “Star Wars” addictions. Dominique Brillon UC Berkeley. You will be hard pressed to find a “single lady” who knows the halls of Dana Hills better than Dominique Brillon. President of Thespian Society and SOCSA councils, Lead Critic of Cappies, member of Quiz Bowl and the Improv team, and heavily active member of SOCSA, Brillon is always busy. Even so, this energizer Bunny said she will miss “spending 16 hours of my day at school.” Although Brillon enjoys being involved in so many activities her primary passion is performing. “I love being on stage and really connecting with a character,” said Brillon, whose second home has been the Porthole. “I am myself in SOCSA;

Tim Brown is “the master” of nearly everything from Tetris to physics. Go ahead. Ask him. With a 4.33 GPA and a dream to be a trauma surgeon, Brown is well-deserved of his valedictorian title. Brown will be attending UC Berkeley next year, where he will major in biochemistry and minor in philosophy. He looks forward to “playing lots of Ultimate Frisbee and sleeping in until ungodly hours of the afternoon.” Though he will not miss “paying for his food and gas,” he will always yearn for the blissful memories of “hanging out with his wonderful friends.” He will also miss the company and entertaining stories of his favorite teacher Jake Schwartzberg. “We danced the dance of dancing dancers in Algebra II,” added Brown. Brown kept busy in high school with lacrosse, track and field, and NHS, though he admits he was most successful at procrastinating. Tim is beyond doubt “the master,” and it would not be surprising if he does in fact accomplish all his life goals. -Lauren Breece

Callie Calva Saddleback “I don’t have any regrets,” declared Callie Calva of her high school experience. While some complained incessantly during their four years in high school, Calva em-

braced fun times with friends and decent teachers. However, high school was far different than she ever expected. “When I was in middle school, I thought it would be more like on TV,” laughed Calva. ”I thought I was going to get dumped in the trash or something!” Despite her dislike of the crowded halls, Calva is grateful for the school’s close location to the beach, and she will always remember her best math teacher, Jake Schwartzberg. After transferring from Saddleback and graduating, Calva plans to pursue a career relating to law or business. Though Calva will miss high school for its laid-back qualities, she will not “miss being forced to take classes that I really don’t want to take,” stated Calva. For other procastinator’s like her, she recommends, “Stay on track, but still have fun.” - Lexi Cotcamp

Armando Catacutan Cal State Long Beach Self- described as a “generally shy” but friendly person, Armando Catacutan is ready to go to Cal State Long Beach on a full ride “President’s Scholarship.” Apart from his obvious academic accomplishments (giving him a 4.14 GPA), Catacutan is quite eclectic. He likes to draw, eat sushi, and watch “House.” His choice of television reflects his life ambitions: to work in the medical field. Catacutan was in the HMO Academy for four years, accumulating numerous unforgettable memories. He recalls that once, “during Star Test week, we had ‘nutrition labs,’” which consisted primarily of making waffles and other food. He also looks back with nostalgia on the HMO trip to San Francisco. “It was a lot of fun!” Catacutan will never forget his teachers, especially Mr. Ritscher, Mrs. Wingen, Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Williamson, and Mr. Cunningham. He loved Mr. Ritscher’s easygoing personality and his “cool demonstrations”; Roberts’s “really good sense of humor”; and how Cunningham “is so smart. If only I could be half as smart as he is!” He will never forget his Anatomy class senior year either. For those of you who already knew everything in this story, Catacutan has one thing to say that you might not know: “I’m not Mexican, I’m Filipino!” adding, “All Filipinos are really big on karaoke, but you can’t make me sing in public!” - Elizabeth Chaddock

Roger Chin Swarthmore If you’re strolling down a hallway, and you hear a group of nearby students give the simpering “Rah Rah” call, you know you are truly in the presence of greatness. Roger Chin, however, is not just a GPA superstar, a swimmer extraordinaire, and a prodigious male cheerleader – the complex intricacies of his personality are lost in the folds of his vast intelligence and can only be uncovered by an eye well-adjusted to the light of his sarcasm and wit. Chin has developed close relationships with the teachers at Dana and will fondly remember them as their teaching carries him through his college years. He admits that Marc Degen and Mike Hulse must be the most fashionable people at Dana, and he would sooner get a B on his transcript than turn down one of Connie Pettijohn’s hugs. Chin will remember Martha MacIntosh for her intense joy in the face of devious teenagers and Paige Prescott for always being agitated with said devious teenagers. He refuses to believe that Kurt Speidel’s harsh criticisms have any other purpose than to inspire and lightly nudge students onto the path of academic greatness. When asked about his other secret talents, Roger said modestly, “It’s been said that I’m a great belly dancer.” Upon hearing this, a number of conveniently-placed eavesdroppers crooned in with agreement. Surely, Swarthmore will be lucky to have a man of such endless, applicable talent. - Devin Valenciano

Jeff Cohen UCLA Raising the bar for others, Jeff Cohen has set an admirable example for his younger peers. Since freshman year, Cohen has endeavored tirelessly in any activity he has participated in. A member of Marching Band and Jazz Band all four years, Cohen plays two instruments: baritone and trombone. The camaraderie of the groups and the challenge of playing the music itself attract Cohen. Cohen has served as Vice President of Jewish Club and been a member of CSF and NHS. Beyond his love of music, Cohen actively helps the community and prepares himself for the future through HMO.

Jeff Zhang, Rory Weinell, Michael Weinberg, Cameron Djokovich, Samir Mody “I want to pursue a medical career; thus, I joined HMO,” explained Cohen, who presently desires to seek an occupation related to surgery. Volunteering at South Coast Medical Center and Kaiser Sand Canyon, Cohen learned the value of community service. Martha McIntosh, Mark Gammel, Paige Prescott, Bill Cunningham, and Vicki Roberts rank among Cohen’s favorite teachers. “All of these teachers did not solely care about preparing us for tests but were down to earth and friendly to all students,” commented Cohen. Departing from Dana, Cohen will head to UCLA to major in history. - Willie Hodge

Augusta Collier UC Santa Barbara Augusta Collier has had an unforgettable high school experience. During her four years at Dana Hills, she has been a member of several student clubs, including Quiz Bowl and NHS. UC Santa Barbara’s notable academics attracted Collier to attend college there. Although she plans to major in French, a language she has studied for three years, linguistics is also a field that intrigues her. Collier looks forward to participating in UCSB’s fencing program After learning about fencing for her seventh grade project, she joined the Swashbucklers team and began fencing competitively in both group and individual competitions. She has been a dancer since the age of three and is now a member of SOCSA Dance. Even though Collier will miss the comforts of living at home, she is excited to move into her dorm this summer,

where she will get to live in a refreshing atmosphere and meet new people. However, she will never forget her favorite high school memories, which include competing in the 2006 Summer Fencing Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia; receiving an Achievement Award for PreCalculus Honors her sophomore year; and celebrating her eighteenth birthday. - Sara Gold

Jason Cox UCLA Known as the uber-programmer, Jason Cox plans to major in computer science with an emphasis on artificial intelligence. Cox, who has been programming since he was twelve, knows ten programming languages. Having worked on multiple projects, Cox continues the quest to finish his first great opus, The Souls of Aemos, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Commenting on UCLA, one of his top choices for its computer science program, Cox stated, “UCLA will be a lot of fun with Kiefer, Jeff Cohen, and Samir there.” Cox loves to draw epic concept art for his games, finding creative and innovative solutions which make him an aberration from the average science nerd. Recently, he worked as an intern for MaMoCa, a company developing marker-less motion capture technology for the movie and video games industries. Besides being a programming prodigy, he plays the alto saxophone, which he has played for eight years, is part of Dana’s Jazz Ensemble. Cox is the co-founder and president of the Computer Science Club and was the creator of Mu Alpha Theta’s website. Additionally, he serves as the webmaster for the Dana Hills Chapter. -Willie Hodge

Meet Josh Dean. He’s a tall, handsome young boy born and raised in south Orange County. He enjoys cross country but not running, surfing but not swimming, and painting but not drawing. He’s a man of contrasting interests. Dean is attending the California Polytechnic State University of San Louis Obispo next year. He wears mainly punkish clothing and voted in the national election of 2008 with very little efficacy. “Chill” is Dean’s favorite adjective. After being asked why, he responded with a biting “Must I really explain?” Thermal imaging reveals that the center of Dean’s

heart maintains an average temperature of 270 degrees Kelvin. Dean will be majoring in wine making, claiming that his true passion in life features residing in Napa Valley, “where a cool, blue moon cascades over a bountiful terrain of special grape plants.” After graduating from college, Dean plans on being a professional triathlete. “I’m super strong and good looking,” he said. “I think being super good at triathlons will only add to my beauty.” Upon making millions on the stock market, Dean will travel the world, looking for epic rocks to chill on. “It’ll be chill,” he said. Dean is going to miss nothing while at college, but he will be missed a lot. He will be remembered for running in super cute running shorts and being chill. -Geoff Hardaway

Alanna Eilenberg UC Berkeley “I consider myself funny; I try to make people laugh. I don’t care if they’re laughing with me or at me, as long as I’m the cause of their laughter!” So stated Alanna Eilenberg, as she expressed her sense of humor about her sense of humor. A fan of Lavender Lounge, tomatoes, and “The Princess Bride,” Eilenberg clearly knows how to excel in school and still take it easy. At Berkeley, she plans to study biological or chemical engineering. She was attracted to the school’s proximity to San Francisco and its prestigious engineering program. “I’m looking forward to going somewhere completely

she is going to miss the most. “It seems like everyone is parting ways,” she stated. While her close friends are scattering across the country, Fernald has chosen to stay close by attending the University of San Diego. “The more I think about being close to home, the more I like it,” Fernald decided. She is happy that her parents will still be able to be a part of her life, “to a certain extent.” Fernald also anticipates being able to remain in the lives of her friends still at Dana, in addition to those she made at church and Catalina. She looks forward to focusing on a single subject that really interests her, specifically embryology, and having a more “hands on learning, rather than textbook” at USD. - Aralyn Beaumont

Cameron Djokovich UCLA If anyone’s more than just a pretty face, it’s Cameron Djokovich. Behind that innocent smile lies an impossibly charismatic gentleman, someone everyone else can’t help but want to be, or at least be friends with. “If I could be one man,” said teammate AJ Perea, “it would be Cameron Djokovich.” Don’t let his reserved nature fool you; hidden not too far beneath that presumed timidity is a comedic genius. Once in a blue moon, Djokovich surprises his peers by breaking out of his comfort zone and allowing his usually subdued humor out of its cage. Perhaps this is best evidenced by the infamous Coaches’ Calendar, featuring ten seniors on the boys’ track team, including Djokovich, posing provocatively in tightywhities or speedos. “Oh my god,” he laughed, burying his face in his hands as soon as the topic was mentioned. “I’ve definitely become more confident with myself throughout high school.” For four years, Djokovich partook in distance races on the track team and ran for the cross country team, contributing to their impressive records with his 4:23 mile; he also played midfield/defense on the soccer team for three years. “I like how direct the correlation between effort and result is when it comes to running,” he stated. “You try hard, you race hard.” When he isn’t running, Djokovich “admire[s] mirrors and practice[s] telling jokes.” Despite being such a stellar athlete, his academics always take first priority. He applies the same principle to his schoolwork as he does to his running to ensure impressive grades. Somehow, even with hours of practice every day, he manages to finish all his homework and be in bed by ten every night. It only makes sense that a top university like UCLA, where Djokovich is headed this September to major in mechanical engineering, would want him to attend their institution. And as if his boyish good looks and charming good manners aren’t enough, Djokovich’s predictable success is sure to make him the ultimate chick magnet. - Tiffany Han

She is also enthusiastic about the diversity of food up north, since there are so many different cultures in the area. While she is excited for what is to come, she will never forget Marc Degen’s “your mom” jokes and Bill Cunningham’s infinite wisdom. Perhaps her secret to scholastic success is “back talking [her] teachers and getting away with it.” Despite this, she still appreciates her teachers including Leo Compean, Kurt Speidel, and MarcDegen and their special qualities, like Degen’s determination to “go to any ends to keep us awake.” Somewhere between building houses and taking AP tests, Eilenberg found time to participate in track and cross country, lead music groups at her church, and volunteer her time to tutor. As she leaves to pursue her dreams, Eilenberg hopes that those she leaves behind “[won’t] be ignorant to what’s going on in the world” and will do what they can to make a difference. -Elizabeth Chaddock

Kaylie Fernald U. of San Diego For those of you who know Kaylie Fernald, a fun loving and hard-working girl comes to mind. Fernald’s friendships are especially important to her, and it’s the time spent with them

Amy Fraze UC Berkeley Amy Fraze is one of those rare female anomalies: she loves science. This may be, of course, much due to the influence of her notoriously muscular physics teacher the past two years, Nate Ritscher. “Why else do you think I took physics in the first place?” she joked. Excited to “move out and be in a different element, just to be more independent,” Fraze was pleasantly surprised when she clicked to find a congratulations letter rather than a rejection staring her in the face. “It was my wishful thinking school,” she said. “I never thought I’d get in. A lot of people didn’t, and I didn’t want to get rejected again, but I clicked the link and freaked out when I found out I got in.” Even so, Fraze will miss the sun and warm weather in Orange County that San Francisco lacks almost entirely. “I’ll probably start crying when I actually leave for college,” she stated. “Senior year just went by so fast.” Gradating with two years of varsity lacrosse under her belt, Fraze hopes to maintain the relationships she built while on the Catalina trip with her Marine Ecology class. “School’s important,” she declared, “but I have to keep up my social life too.” - Tiffany Han

Taylor Fuhrmann, known for her beautiful, long red hair and friendly smile, is ready for the next step in her education as a psychology major at UCLA. Along with furthering her life academically, Fuhrmann is excited about the social aspect of university life, like meeting new people, creating crazy memories, and exploring the depths of her newfound freedom. “Plus,” she added, “rooming with my best friend!” Although she says she is ready for the challenges ahead of her, she also remembers those she is leaving behind. As an active participant in CSF and the Pink Ribbon Club, as well as an HMO student, Fuhrmann had her work cut out for her. Even so, she managed a cumulative 4.14 at the close of this year. Fortunately for Fuhrmann, the struggles won’t be all she remembers. She also reflects fondly on dances, football games, and proud moments in AP Biology when she managed an “A” on one of Gammell’s infamously difficult tests. Fuhrmann says that she will lead her life as Gandhi did, becoming the change she wants to see in the world. - Stephanie Wright

Although esteemed valedictorian Sarah Guidas is afraid of “getting killed in the ghetto” while attending USC, nothing is stopping her from accomplishing her dream of becoming a pediatrician. “I will miss my friends the most,” Guidas said, “because none of them are going to college with me, but I am looking forward to meeting new, good friends.” Guidas is excited to attend the USC football games, and is planning on “immediately switching [her major] from pre-med to biomedical engineering.” Besides juggling a hectic AP schedule that most students would cringe at, Guidas uses her free time to paint and was heavily involved in SOCSA for visual arts all four years. During her time at Dana, Guidas was involved in various clubs, such as Make-a-Wish, NHS, and CSF. Looking forward to a relaxing few months void of AP summer work before college, Guidas cannot wait to graduate and spend summer with her close friends and family. - Aly Vander Hayden

An outstanding track and soccer four-year varsity star, Kassie Ham is now hoping to continue her success at Point Loma University in San Diego. Although she loves to hang out with friends or maybe head to Irvine for some tofu soup in her free time, Ham has been a dedicated student and athlete. In college, Ham is looking forward to possibly traveling abroad with her new soccer team and meeting new friends. Although she tried out for the track team on a whim, this paid off just as much as when she was a child and her parents paid her a quarter every time she ran around the tennis court to keep her busy. Ham will be studying to become an engineer, with an academic and track scholarship. Later, she hopes to expand her horizons at Columbia for graduate school. Ham’s most memorable classes would be incomplete without Calculus teacher Kurt Speidel and AP Spanish teacher Senor Sink. Despite excitement for a new experience at college, Ham will most definitely miss her friends, family, and three dogs, including a shaggy wheaten terrier named Beyonce. - Annie Bubinski

Standing six feet six inches, Geoff Hardaway-quite noticeably-stands out amongst the sea of students. However, the face that you see bobbing through the crowd is merely the tip of the iceberg. What lies underneath is a man who is jam-packed with compassion, eccentricity, and intelligence, and it is these qualities that indeed make Hardaway stand out. Hardaway will be attending UCSB in the fall to study economics, and looks forward to “absorbing economics into my system at a rate comparable to an infinitely differential function,” said Hardaway. While in college, Geoff would like to take the opportunity to “search the inner depths of [his] soul and develop [his] spirituality.” Though excited for college, Hardaway knows that not only will he no longer have access to a “constant abundance of dank snacks,” but he will greatly miss “the tranquility of his home and [his] sister.” Although Hardaway was quite busy in high school, with volleyball, newspaper, ASU, Quiz Bowl, and the Young Democrats club, his vigorous schedule never intruded upon his attitude and odd behaviors. Furthermore, Hardaway has an easy knack for making all in his chill presence smile. “Nothing delights me more than to make people happy,” he stated. Dana will miss his smiling face, and he will miss the place that generated his smile everyday. From “the long hours in the newspaper room” to “interacting with peers” to “chillin’ with Ms. Mac,” he will miss it all. - Lauren Breece

Kiefer Greenspan UCLA Seen on the football field during halftime, Kiefer Greenspan has led the Dana Hills Marching Band as field Drum Major.

Kristen Hagland Cal Poly SLO “I make greeting cards, I knit, I scrapbook, I watch ‘Antiques Roadshow’, and I hang out with my grandmother,” joked future SLO student Kristen Hagland. Sarah Guidas, Taylor Mosher, Taylor Fuhrmann, Kaylie Fernald, Amy Fraze “Music has provided me an outlet to expand both artistically and socially,” he explained. Greenspan will attend UCLA, his top choice, this upcoming fall. He will most likely major in math or science. “UCLA is the only school that only hangs championship banner. Nothing else is good enough here,” said Greenspan of his future university. As President of Jewish Club and Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta, Greenspan promoted celebration of Jewish heritage and culture as well as mathematics at Dana. Some of Greenspan’s favorite teachers at Dana are Steve Wade and Kurt Speidel. Because of Speidel, Greenspan will never quit the pursuit of his dreams for fear of becoming a communications major, hermit crab salesman, or worse yet, a mall loser. Recalling his favorite moment at Dana, he recounted the memory of leading the marching band onto the football field as a streaker ran by. “My high school experience has been diverse and nonstop fun,” he concluded. - Willie Hodge

“I like that [architecture] is an interesting mixture of math, science, and design,” said Hagland of her future career. For the last two years Hagland has volunteered at the Dana Point library shelving books and watering plants along “with all my middle-aged friends I’ve made there.” Also an employee at Banana Republic, she appreciates that, “I work for the man.” The proud owner of an ‘88 Volkswagen Cabriolet that has broken down at least 20 times, Hagland knows about as much as an auto mechanic. “It has character, and that means issues,” said Hagland of her beloved vehicle. When not fulfilling her passion for “Dr. Pepper, Taco Bell, and being an active member of [her] community,” Hagland confessed, “I like to lie in grassy fields and spend time with los Conejos.” Some of Hagland’s best memories from high school involve her Spanish class. “I’m going to remember Señor Sink for the rest of my life-his stories were eye opening.” - Brennan Whitley

Tiffany Han UCLA Tiffany Han has quite the list of slightly embarrassing obsessions, from Britney Spears and Zac Efron to cupcakes and Hugh Laurie(House). However, something most people fail to recognize about her is that, under all her fabulous clothes and behind her towering high heels lays an AP genius. Planning on majoring in either journalism or English and Communications, this UCLA-bound valedictorian is the definition of well-rounded. Han has kept high scores in her AP classes, contributed three years of stories to the school newspaper, worked as a piano tutor, and played lacrosse, and yet still managed to keep up her thriving social life and cutting edge style. “Did you know that House is partly filmed at UCLA?!” she enthused. “I’m just super excited to live in the city, have a break from my parents’ constant nagging, and stalk Hugh Laurie,” she declared. “And I can walk to Sprinkles every day!” Similar to the object of her obsession, Hugh Laurie, Han is notorious for her brutal honesty and heavy sarcasm. Han’s equally honest best friend, Nadia Zamani, commented, “Tiffany can always make me laugh no matter what, and I know I can always count on her. She has been my best friend since ninth grade and will always be my tumbleweed.” Although Han is eager to “meet new, preferably hot, boys in LA,” she did mention, “I’m going to miss going to Disneyland every other week with Devon Shaw(my BFF), the PB&Js my dad made me every day for lunch, and all the nicknames my friends and I made up for hot guys(like Jelly Rice).” Han eagerly anticipates spending three weeks in Europe following graduation and attending the “Harry Potter” premiere over summer. - Devon Shaw

If you’re walking through the hallways of Dana and an overwhelming aroma of patchouli surrounds you, you can guess that photographer Ian Kung is near. Kung can be found spending his days drinking chai lattes-never at Starbucks, mind you-and chatting up his Calculus teacher Kurt Speidel after school. While receiving the extra mathematical enlightenment after hours, Kung also met his current girlfriend of a year, Brennan Whitley, in room 401. The two are heading off to Berkeley together in the fall, where he plans on majoring in business and engineering. At Dana, Kung piled 13 AP classes onto his alreadybusy schedule, which included tennis and yearbook. Among all of his classes, however, his favorite was AP Environmental Science. “That Mrs. Dang-Wright really knows what she’s talking about,” he commented. Kung, who traded in his BMW X3 for a more ecofriendly Toyota Prius last year, claimed that he’s “really just trying to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.” Kung hopes to further spread his environmental consciousness around Berkeley when his education commences there in the fall. - Aralyn Beaumont & Tiffany Han

Serena Lomonico UCLA

Michelle Lee UC Berkeley Michelle Lee was surprised when she received her acceptance letter to UC Berkeley. But with her academic achievements, no one else was. Lee has decided to major in history and minor in music, specifically vocal performance. Lee will also be a part of the prestigious Berkeley Orchestra. Graduating with an outstanding total of 11 APs and involvement in orchestra and Mock Trial, Lee is ready for college, so she can leave her “tiring high school schedule” behind. Although none of her close friends are going up north with Lee, she will be reunited with her older brother. Although Lee is afraid of the rigorous schedule she will be taking on, she is excited that she will finally be able “to study what [she] wants.” Finally having time to partake in hobbies such as reading and writing that her high school schedule would not

With distinctive blue eyes and buoyant blonde hair, one might be surprised to learn that Serena Lomonico speaks Spanish fluently. But this proud recipient of the Sons of Italy scholarship is far from the stereotypical Orange County beach bum. The conquistador of ten AP classes and a varsity cross country/track captain, Lomonico has managed to capture the hearts of countless teachers and students over the course of her four years at Dana. “Serena is just one of the most selfless people I know. Whatever she decides to do with her life will change others for the better, whether she means to or not,” said her best friend Paige Smith. Lomonico will be attending UCLA this fall, where she hopes to study abroad and eventually pursue a degree that will combine her passions for both Spanish and the ocean. Lomonico attributes this goal, in part, to Randy Hudson’s Marine Ecology class and the Catalina field study. One day, Lomonico hopes that she will be able to “see Tyler Valdes run in the Olympics.” Lomonico knows she will miss “all [her] cross country girls,” who helped her make her greatest high school memory: running a 5:13. Still, Lomonico is excited for the adventures resting just upon the cusp of her horizon-adventures to be colored in blue and gold and dazzled with Bruin pride. - Anna Williams

Rachel Lu Boston College Setting out to accomplish her aspiration of becoming a powerful businesswoman, Rachel Lu is looking forward to experiencing the city life she’s always dreamed of in Boston. Lu will major in business, with a concentration in marketing, at Boston College this upcoming fall. Even though Lu is leaving behind Southern California’s moderate temperature, she is excited about the chilly weather that is in store for her in Boston, as she is already shopping for her much-awaited new winter wardrobe. Lu laughed, “I’m looking forward to the two minutes I’ll have to enjoy the weather before I turn into a popsicle.” Lu recalled that her fa-

When you see this man walking through the mall, you may ask yourself, “Why do I have butterflies in my stomach?” It’s ok, it happens to the best of us. Nathan “Iceman” Lubock is a six-foot four Lithuanian Jew. When he’s not volunteering at the synagogue, you can find Lubock doing inverted reverse Lithuanian push-ups with his childhood pal Brendon Ballo or watching “The Matrix.” He’ll take his love for chemistry with him to Duke University, where he’ll be majoring in mechanical and biomedical engineering with a minor in women’s studies. Lubock is heavily influenced by the “Liberal Media” and looks forward to voting for Obama in the 2012 Election. If you’re pondering Lubock’s “detrimental social stigmas,” heed the fact that his favorite memory was learning multivariable Calculus. Armed with TC7, Lubock plans on “giving to homeless children and not being bossy.” - Geoff Hardaway

Ali Lutze Colorado State Univ. Ali Lutze is an aspiring scientist who is bound to have successes in the future. She was a student in the HMO program her freshman through junior year and also participated in CSF and NHS. Lutze is excited to be attending Colorado State University because of its four-year undergraduate research program. She plans to major in biomedical sciences, although she is considering taking a dual major with zoology. After obtaining both her undergraduate and graduate degrees, she hopes to become a vet specializing in horse reproduction. Lutze grew to love horses during her seven years of equestrian competitions. Although she is eager to begin her career path, Lutze will also miss her friends, family, and pets while in Colorado. She will never forget her favorite high school memories, which include going on HMO trips to the hospital and Marine Ecology’s Catalina trip. - Sara Gold

Evelyn Martinez USC Ready to unleash her innovation on the world, Evelyn Martinez will be cultivating her passion for architecture, film, and photography at USC next year. As a prospective architecture major who dreams of one day working in Dubai, she wants to “design furniture, do product design, or design the interior of cars.” Also considering a minor in film, Martinez is a devoted movie-goer who loves action movies, especially “King Kong” and “A.I.” Employing these moviemaking talents, Martinez is a part of the Digital Media staff. She does the candymation for

every episode of “The Splash.” Also extremely adamant about protecting the environment, Martinez is Vice President of S.A.V.E. As she is involved with the Big Sister Program as well, Martinez “loves mentoring her buddy and hearing stories.” While excited to move to LA, Martinez admitted, “I’m going to miss my friends so much, [but] I’m working on the Facebook” to keep in touch. - Brennan Whitley

Breelan Matranga Point Loma Breelan Matranga goes to bed at nine on weeknights. She’s the proud driver of a Volvo “turbo” and can often be found doing the family grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s. Still, do not let her domestic exterior fool you- Breelan Matranga is not a soccer mom and, in fact, she isn’t all that domestic either. Despite battling a raging (and self-diagnosed) case of senioritis since eighth grade, Matranga has managed to balance her academics with varsity cross country, track, and soccer over the course of her four years at Dana. She’s earned her way onto the Wall of Fame, has landed a prime photo on the side of the Nike National’s bus, and has managed to successfully tune out an uncanny number of boring lectures. While Matranga entered high school with the intention of fostering her talents on the soccer field, after being forced to run countless laps around the field for such inexcusable offenses as chewing gum and wearing the wrong shade of blue socks, she discovered her love for running. She joined cross country as a junior, where she’s gotten to run her heart out and wear whatever she chooses while doing it. For this, she will forever be in debt to the infamous Steve Donoso. Matranga will continue running next year at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where she will have two thirds of her tuition paid for by a combined athletic/academic scholarship. While she claims that she was initially attracted to Point Loma because it’s near “Soma and House of Blues and has a pretty campus,” her lifelong friend Tali Constantz asserts otherwise. “It’s the party school of Christian schools,” Constantz remarked: “Needless to say, Breelan’s excited. She’s kind of a party animal.” Although looking forward to moving on, Matranga will always look back upon her years at Dana with great fondness. “It’s a special place,” Matranga concluded: “I spent two years writing essays that were never read and have de-

veloped an extreme dependence on caffeine for survival. I will always remember singing ‘Shake It’ in the van with Gully in Portland and eating tofu soup in Irvine with Jeremy Chang. These moments will stay with me always.” - Anna Williams

Ian McCarthy Saddleback A fan of the Cubs, President Obama, and Chuck Norris, the halls of Dana will be forever changed without the presence of Ian McCarthy. McCarthy is a self-proclaimed lover of “a beautiful sunset” and “solving differential equation[s].” This, perhaps, is why he is staying at home to enjoy the endless educational opportunities offered at Saddleback. Surpassing the excitement of school sporting events and witnessing what he refers to as “the rise and fall of George Chang,” he confesses that what

She will be attending the Univ. of San Diego in the fall, which was her first choice. “I really like the relatively small size and its perfect location,” McGah stated. Although she is excited for college, she will miss her friends and all of the memorable school activities such as pep rallies and Air Guitar. McGah attributed a lot

Grant McClory Colorado Without a doubt, number 42 Grant McClory spent his years at Dana as a meathead. He played varsity offensive line and linebacker for three glorious years. But this is not stopping him from pursuing business at Boulder in hope of “making some good money” as an adult, playing guitar in his free time, or joining choir his senior year. “I’ll miss kickin’ it with my friends after football,” stated McClory. He will also miss

Kelsey McKown UCLA Having been at Dana for merely a year, Kelsey McKown’s vivacious personality quickly announced her arrival around school. The tiny blonde girl that you see jumping in circles around the mall at break is full of more than energy. McKown is also extremely intelligent and talented. Having been on choir all four years in high school and maintaining over a 4.0 GPA, Kelsey has proven that little people can do big things. “Kelsey never ceases to amaze me with her continuous energy,” said close friend, Jenny Holladay. McKown will be attending UCLA next year, and although she is unsure of what she is majoring in, she is destined to succeed. McKown earned her admission into the prestigious UC with her numerous extra curricular activities including an internship at Victoria’s Secret. Though feeling nostalgic at times, McKown maintains optimistic and is excited for her “adventures in the city.” -Lauren Breece

Jason Meng UCSD Jason Meng may be “one part honey, two parts sugar, and all lovin’ in the oven,” but upon further investigations I have found that there is much more to Meng beneath his sugary façade. As he heads off to UCSD to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor or rockstar, he looks forward to being his own, independent man. Meng participated in SRLA for five years and track and cross-country for four years, which increased his stamina for “running from the police.” While Meng respects Mahatma Gandhi (“he’s kinda like me”), he doesn’t “like idols, because when they fall, they fall hard.” For the younger generation, Meng has only one piece of advice: “Don’t drink O.J. after you brush you teeth!” - Elizabeth Chaddock

Brian Miles Saddleback Basketball is an integral component of Brian Miles. During his freshman and sophomore years, Miles played on Dana’s basketball team, but an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament ended his career. However, Miles did not allow this to deter him, as he continued to play basketball in his free time. Miles hopes to save money by transferring to UCLA after finishing his general education at Saddleback. He desires to utilize his enjoyment of pure sciences to complete a master’s degree program in electrical engineering. Recalling the discovery of his love of engineering in Nate Ritscher’s class, Miles added about his favorite teacher, “I really wish I had his forearms.” He looks forward to his trip to Italy this summer, where he will appreciate the country’s food, culture, and architecture. - Willie Hodge

Ryan Mitchell Cal Poly SLO Five thousand miles later, odds are that Ryan Mitchell has run his way into a special place in your heart. Mitchell has overcome the burdens of numerous injuries over the course of his four years on Cross Country and Track But instead of dropping into oblivion, as so many plagued athletes do, Mitchell has repeatedly chosen to rise above. It is this drive to succeed, along with his infectiously positive attitude and innate ability to brighten anyone’s day, that has landed Mitchell a coveted position as one of this year’s team captains. “The team camaraderie and the strong values Coach Butler has instilled in us all will always stay with me,” smiled Mitchell. Mitchell hopes to continue his strong academic performance as a student of Cal Poly SLO’s widely respected Orfalea School of Business next fall. - Anna Williams

VALEDICTORIANS ged in appearance” valedictorian is headed off to UCLA to study computer science. When asked about his summer plans, Samir Mody said, “I’m just going to have some fun at the beach, where I’ll work on getting browner than I already am. Oh, and I’ll be picking up some girls too.” This CSF officer and NHS member said that his favorite memory is Air Guitar 2009, especially his Pokémon act, which he described as “the best act in the whole show.” As for his career, Mody commented, “I’m going to go back to India and lead my people through a revolution from the oppressive British, who are led by Sam Tearle.” While still on the subject of his origins, Mody added, “My Indian heritage is what gives me unique traits.” Too bad humor is not one of those traits. After several long minutes of deciding how he would sum himself up, Mody smiled and said, “I’ve caught ‘em all.” While the rest of us are left to decipher what this subtle Pokémon reference leaves, Mody will be out attempting to conquer the world as a Bruin. - Tyler Hartung

Taylor Mosher UCLA HMO devotee and biology lover Taylor Mosher comes from a line of medically involved family members and is looking to make her own mark at UCLA this coming fall. After experiencing a series of surgeries to try to correct a congenital skin disease, Mosher was inspired to pursue a career in the medical field. Mosher will be taking a variety of pre-medical classes and, depending on her patience with medical school, will strive to become either a physician’s assistant or pediatrician. After joining the HMO program, Mosher became a dedicated volunteer at South Coast Medical Center on the Youth Board, where she had the chance to organize events, raise money and help the hospital in numerous ways. During her last free summer, Mosher plans on visiting old friends in Cape Cod before entering college life. - Annie Bubinski

Ramin Nader USC Reminiscing over his academic career thus far, Ramin Nader will miss being able to goof off in classes he didn’t really have to do anything in. He will never forget his friends and teachers, namely Kurt Speidel and Marc Degen for being interesting and Martha MacIntosh for being Mac. However, Nader is not one to dwell upon the past and he looks forward to the school spirit, social life, and football games at USC, where he will participate in its outstanding business program. As a volunteer at the South Coast Medical Center and Vice President on the Board, he is ultra qualified as a student and an uber diplomat, and sees himself working for a big accounting firm one day. “Don’t take high school too seriously, act honestly and speak boldly”. - Ben Lim

Neally, who will be majoring in electronic engineering at Cal Poly SLO, has aspirations to become an engineer for Boeing. He has had ample preparation for such a career from his favorite teachers, Kurt Speidel, Marc Degen, and Nate Ritscher. But Neally is certainly not a math nerd. Over summer, he plans on entering volleyball tournaments and going to Yosemite. His words of wisdom could not be more valuable: “Don’t piss your teachers off” and “Don’t tell Speidel that you’re going to be a communications major.” - Jake Rosen

Nika Nikbakht UCI Nika Nikbakht is a scholar. By going to UCI next year to major in biomedical engineering, she hopes to lay a solid foundation for entering the medical world. She cites “being involved in HMO and volunteering at the hospital with my best friend,” as the reasons why she wants to enter into this field. Bill Cunningham and Kurt Speidel helped her get through all the strenuous APs and high school experiences. “Mr. Cunningham taught me the value of hard work and how to do well in life,” she stated. However, Nikbakht is not taking off too eagerly. She will miss her brothers “because they gave [her] hope to be a well rounded person instead of a typical teenager.” Nikbakht will take her philanthropic passion, as well as the confidence that Megan Johnson gave her, to make her way passionately through life. - Geoff Hardaway

Katy Perry UC Santa Cruz Katy Perry (not the singer) will be attending UC Santa Cruz in the fall. “The Santa Cruz campus

is really pretty, and they have vegetarian food options,” she said. She intends on majoring in psychology and photo and wishes to become an elementary school teacher. Perry describes herself as quirky and extremely sarcastic. Her hair has been every color but blue and green. She never wears the same socks, and she doesn’t like Katy Perry (the singer). For three years, she was a part of SOCSA. She also joined NHS and CSF and was on Model UN for one year. Outside of Dana’s walls, Perry volunteered at the Ocean Institute and was a Big Sister. Although she will miss Dana, she is glad to be rid of her zero period. - Gina Scott

Lauren Reyes UC Berkeley “I’m the stupidest smart person you’ll ever meet,” Lauren Reyes commented on her surprise at being a valedictorian. Despite her surprise, Reyes feels “so splendid.” The vivacious valedictorian’s amazement continued with her acceptance into UC Berkeley as an environmental engineering major. Although the acceptance forced Reyes to let go of her high school dream of going to UCSB, she felt, “If I turned [Berkeley] down, I’d be so stupid.” Reyes feels comfortable with her decision nonetheless. “I was set on SB to party it up, but I went there and it was too much,” she stated. “It was like a continuation of Dana.” Don’t get her wrong, she still likes to have her fun. “I like to work hard and play hard,” Reyes paused, “but more of the play part.” Although she was often forced to buckle down and work hard, she had her physical outlets to thank for earning herself a white robe. Reyes will be jetting off to the Greek Isles to celebrate her hard work this summer. - Aralyn Beaumont

Alana Rice UCSB Looking

forward

to

“wearing cute dresses to sorority parties” and flaunting “Anna’s prom dress,” Alana Rice surely has an exciting future ahead of her at the UCSB. Rice, a DHHS soccer player for the past four years, will be majoring in math. In the future, she hopes to fulfill her aspiration of becoming a math teacher. However, Rice added, “I only want to teach high level math because I dont want to deal with mall losers.” Rice noted that her most memorable experiences have been in Kurt Speidel’s calculus classes, where she “learned countless life lessons.” Laughing with her friends, Rice explained that her ultimate goal in life is “to become a soccer mom and raise Anna’s children until they’re ten.” - Pia Bhathal

Shelby Roberts USC “It went by amazingly fast,” marveled USC-bound Shelby Roberts. Whether it happened to be singing on a bus with friends on the way to the South Coast Medical Center or embarking on a San Francisco field trip, enrolling in HMO was undoubtedly Roberts’s best decision at Dana. Along with embarrassing moments like calling her teacher “mom” and a few notso-coordinated spills on the school stairs, Roberts will also remember winning first place in doubles (for tennis) with Lexi Usgaard in 2008. However, Roberts is the first to admit that high school isn’t always just fun and games. Staying motivated late at night to finish homework, rising at the crack of dawn for zero period, and grinding her way through APs proved to be most difficult tasks for Roberts, all of which she managed to conquer. - Lexi Cotcamp

Zach Satterfield UCI Science Olympiad captain Zach Satterfield will most likely be majoring in Aerospace Engineering at UCI. Satterfield is looking forward to being more independet and able to choose what he studies as he saves money by living at home. Although many of his friends are going to school in California, Satterfield explained that he “will definitely miss [his] friends the most.” Of his favorite memories, he fondly remembers “when Willie screwed up and wore shorts during the chemistry lab. He had to borrow Mr. Ritscher’s pants. It was funny seeing Ritscher in Willie’s shorts.” Concluded Satterfield, “I see myself working for NASA and still playing with my remote control planes in ten years.” - Pia Bhathal

Despite having an impressive GPA, Casey Schreiber is a normal teenager who loves “roller coasters, kids, the beach, shopping, traveling, going to concerts, and dancing.” She added, “Oh, and ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’” After a busy summer of backpacking across European cities for a month with two of

her friends, Schreiber will head to Washington, D.C. in the fall. The yearbook staffer added, “I’ll probably major in pre-med, because I want to become a pediatrician.” Schreiber’s favorite memories include being a part of the 2008 Homecoming set build and going on the Marine Ecology Catalina field study. “I’ll always remember cliff jumping and scuba diving,” Schreiber reminisced. “I’m also going to miss Mr. Speidel because I’m obsessed with him. Even though I don’t do that well in his class.” - Tyler Hartung

Melody Shen USC Self-described as “a bubbly, hard-working little Asian girl who is thrilled yet frightened by the thought of going to college,” Melody Shen will be attending the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC as a biochemistry major with an emphasis in pre-medicine. Shen is looking forward to taking advantage of USC’s widespread school spirit, which, according to her, “Dana seriously lacks,” and facing the challenges of the “real world.” Throughout her four years at Dana, Shen has been an active part of HMO, SOCSA, band, Dolphin Pride, CSF, NHS, and Key Club. Shen concluded, “Mrs. Prescott-Gilbert’s class was the most fun, homoerotic class I have ever experienced, and Mr. Cunningham is God.” - Pia Bhathal

Melanie Shimano Johns Hopkins Melanie Shimano has spent the past four years of her life dedicating all she has to this school. “My life is at this school,” she joked. She was involved in everything from ASU to Pep Squad to NHS and more. Shimano is the only senior who was on ASU for four years. “Getting involved made my school experience fun. I actually liked coming to school every day,” she expressed. In addition, Shimano was a top six “Dolphin of the Year” nominee, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a member of a myriad of clubs. All her involvement really paid off, as she was accepted to Johns Hopkins to major in biomedical engineering. “I will miss everything about Dana Hills,” she stated. - Gina Scott

Leyla Simmons Oklahoma State Univ. Ready to leave home for a small-town feel, Leyla Simmons will be attending Oklahoma State University this fall. After moving here from New York in eighth grade, she has decided that all she has left to explore is the Midwest. Simmons received a full ride for tennis at Oklahoma State and hopes to come back to California for graduate school. Simmons will spend a majority of her summer training for college tennis in Poland with a new coach and trainer. One of the most unforgettable moments of her high school year was winning CIF with her varsity tennis team. At Oklahoma State, Simmons will be focusing on premedical studies and would like to eventually become a dermatologist. - Annie Bubinski

Daniel Smith Rice Known among his peers as a ‘musical snob,’ this Rice Univ.-bound musical prodigy has wowed his teachers and classmates with his bass-playing talents and high GPA. Daniel Smith has juggled AP classes, orchestra, volleyball, HMO, and a place in the prestigious American Youth Symphony. “I am beyond excited to start life on my own, in a completely new environment,” said Smith. “However, for this exact same reason I am also utterly terrified to start college.” After seven years of religiously playing his bass Smith plans on majoring in double bass performance while completing his prerequisites for medical school. Nevertheless, there are plenty of things he will miss about Dana; “Since I am going to Houston, I will miss seeing the ocean from school.” - Devon Shaw

Ryan & Tyler Valdes Stanford

Emily Takei is the typical OC girl. She loves “Gossip Girl” and jeans, and she wears Rainbows every day of her life. She often gets pedicures all the time because of her feet phobia. But this OC girl is “ so over high school” and ready to get out in the real world. “NYU will get me away from the OC lifestyle, and I will be introduced to so many cool experiences,” she said. Takei intends on major-

Affectionately known as “The Twins,” the names Ryan and Tyler Valdes are virtually synonymous with Dana Hills Cross Country. Two-time Cross Country State Champions, these boys have countless honors and awards under their belts, the greatest of which being accepted to Stanford Univ. From a distance, the twins appear to be carbon copies of one another. They share the same 4.27 GPA, height, weight, hair, affinity for Speedo bladin’

Kristina Smith UCI What really got Kristina Smith through high school? “The tennis team,” Smith simply stated. As girls’ varsity team captain for the ‘08-’09 season, Smith led her teammates to both a nearly undefeated season and an earth-shattering win in CIF – a win that would make them back-to-back champions. In addition to winning CIF, Smith remembers the summer tennis team trips with her teammates as one of the funniest and best memories. “I passed out in AP Psych,” Smith laughed sheepishly, while recalling another neck-reddening experience. Smith will attend the Univ. of California, Irvine on a full tennis scholarship. - Lexi Cotcamp

Paige Smith Cal Poly SLO If you’re looking for advice on how to be the next super-involved “I Love Bagels”/ ”That ‘70s Show”-addict, look no further than Paige Smith. Smith can only describe her high school experience as “epic.” CSF president, cross country captain and yearbook staffer merely skim the surface of her great achievements. Valuable memories include cross country trips to Hawaii and Jalama, participating in the Homecoming “Top 6” dance, and, of course, the infamous Catalina trip. On the other hand, Smith recognized that there were definitely some aspects of high school she won’t miss. Smith laughed, “AP Chemistry. I’ve never felt so lost, hopeless, and confused before - it was torture!” At SLO she will major in English and will hopefully work as an intern for a magazine or publishing company. - Lexi Cotcamp

Brad Sundheimer Cal Poly SLO Beginning his journey to become a mechanical engineer, Brad Sundheimer is leaving to study at San Luis Obispo. Although excited about transitioning to a bigger school, he stated, “I played with the same guys on the same team all of high school and will just miss hanging out at practices

Lexi Usgaard UC Berkeley If there’s one thing Lexi Usgaard can do, it’s talk. The garrulous, bubbly blonde has never been shy to chat up a total stranger, a quality that is sure to come in handy next year at UC Berkeley. Throughout her high school years, Usgaard has split her time among an impresssive number of extracurriculars, from tennis and track to HMO and the Pink Ribbon Club. “The experiences I had in HMO really inspired me to pursue a career in medicine,” she said. “Plus, I’ll never forget when I got passed out on!” Usgaard also volunteered her time with the National Charity League, but the selfproclaimed “napaholic” loves to read and to go out for sushi in her free time. While she wishes she could “relive Senior Prom,” she is “really excited to go to Europe this summer and, of course, to start college.” - Tiffany Han

Maral Vahdati UCI Headed to the Univ. of California, Irvine this fall, Maral Vahdati is looking forward to discovering herself and becoming more independent. Since she was young, Vahdati has always defended her beliefs, and she is planning on studying law at UCI. Although ready to be loose from her parents’ grasp, Vahdati will miss “being late to first period with Nadia.” However, she is relieved to not have to cope with “parking all the way in Africa and

and even class schedule. “We do everything together; we’re basically the same person,” joked Tyler. Still, those who know these two best would argue that the twins’ similar physical appearance is counteracted by their drastically different personas. Commonly referred to as a “little ball of fire,” Ryan can often be seen getting worked up and spouting insults. If you’ve fallen victim to these insults, rest assured, Ryan only insults those he likes the most. A prime example of this can be found in myself, whom he will miss more than he could imagine. Thirty seconds younger, the calm and collected Tyler contrasts Ryan’s aggressive demeanor with his soft-spoken presence. The individual Cross Country State Champion, Tyler has led both cross country and track and field’s distance team to league, CIF and state championships. While both agreed that they would “rather run the rest of [their] lives than work,” the Valdes boys plan to pursue careers in either business or law. Still, scan your televisions for these two faces in 2012. There’s a chance they’ll be standing there at the starting line, sporting USA colors in London’s Olympic Games. - Anna Williams

Alina Vergara-Hegi USC “I’m a lean, mean Drama Queen!” exclaimed Alina Vergara-Hegi about her major next year at USC, already invigorated with the Trojan Spirit. Although she is ready to charge forward into the world of the iconic Roman soldier, “the Catalina ’09 experience is something [she’ll] definitely remember, along with performing the lead in ‘The Haunting of Hill House.’” Remembering her four years at Dana, Vergara-Hegi

admitted, “SOCSA basically took over my life. But when I wasn’t in class or on stage,” she joked, “I was tutoring Roger Chin and Jeremy Chang, and perfecting my already elegant penmanship.” Vergara-Hegi’s penmanship, for all those who are unaware, resembles that of a 12 year old boy. A small bundle of energy with a huge personality, Vergara-Hegi will be remembered for her sweet smile and catch-phrases like “Wazzap ma little thugbrain suggadumplingbutt?!” - Stephanie Wright

Taylor Wahl USC Taylor Wahl has had a busy four years at Dana Hills. This year, she served as ASU’s Director of Comm., the only appointed position on the executive board. Through ASU, Wahl enjoyed overseeing school events and contributing to the hard work that allows them to happen. Wahl has also been an active student in the SOCSA program since her freshman year. Although she is a voice major, she has also taken dance and theater classes. The prestigious School of Theatre attracted Wahl to USC, where she will continue studying voice and acting, with the dreams of becoming a renowned actress. She is extremely eager to attend college in Los Angeles, where there are be exciting opportunities for her in the entertainment industry. - Sara Gold

Michael Weinberg UCI Once in a rare while, the gods smile upon our school, giving birth to a superhuman cleverly disguised as one of us. Surely Michael Weinberg, with his holy, phosphorescent aura practically bleeding out of his mane of blonde hair, is one of these creatures. This NHS president and captain of the varsity soccer team has blessed our school with two years of his gleaming presence. Weinberg has a passion for helping others, copiously spreading his endless generosity with the butter knife that is his love. He works with an organization called Sportsgift, which donates sports equipment to children in third-world countries. He lives by his favorite quote – “Don’t tip-toe through life just to arrive safely at death.”Certainly, the powerful strides this Dolphin of the Year takes each day could not be categorized as “tip-toeing.” - Devin Valenciano

Rory Weinell Cal Poly SLO Finally “out of [his] parents’ grasp,” Rory Weinell will be attending Cal Poly SLO to major in political science. Followed by many soon-to-be Dana Hills alumni, Weinell will hardly be alone up north. After graduating Cal Poly, Weinell hopes to become involved in law or possibly become a teacher like his father DHHS teacher Mike Weinell. Along with “being crowned Prom King with [his] twin sister as Prom Queen,” Weinell’s favorite memories are being involved in the male cheerleading during Battle of the Sexes Week and being chosen as a Top 15 Dancer.

Although Weinell will miss the DHHS lacrosse and soccer teams and his days in Marine Ecology, he is graduating with “no regrets. Catalina ’09. Finally off the mainland.” That’s for you, Jeff Gordon. - Aly Vander Hayden

Samantha Wendee Cal Poly SLO Wendee has never been involved with clubs or sports, reserving her gracious presence for more special occasions. The HMO department has had particular fortune, for they have had the opportunity to bask in her aura for the last four years. Horses are Wendee’s expertise, but she keeps her equestrian experiences largely apart from her school life. Besides a brief dip into the shallow waters of a horseriding team at Dana during her sophomore year, she has participated in a number of independent events. She will always remember her HMO trip to San Francisco, when Mrs. Wingen tackled her sister to the floor during a game of spoons. - Devin Valenciano

Brennan Whitley UC Berkeley She’s the girl who waited 13 hours in line to get tickets to Obama’s town hall meeting, the girl who risked attack by a mountain lion in order to clear a trail and better her environment. Brennan Whitley is the girl who will one day change the world with her “quiet opinions” and gentle leadership. This “disastrously organized OCD planner” will be majoring in psychology at UC Berkeley to “help people without having to deal with blood.” Whitley has demonstrated her ability to change the world through her roles as President of SAVE, Vice President of FACE AIDS and her involvement in newspaper. Having had a zero period, the thing that Whitley most looks forward in college is “being able to sleep in till 10:30 and yet still get to class on time.” - Lauren Breece

Anna Williams UC Berkeley Walking through the halls of Dana late on a Thurs. night, you may happen across the always-present lights filtering out the door of Room 708. Sitting at her corner computer, with her face locked in a permanent scowl from dealing with endless incompetence, is Anna Williams. After falsifying an injury and quitting soccer, Williams made a choice of incalculable wisdom when she decided to dedicate herself entirely to the

newspaper publication. “Basically, I love Newspaper and I hate everything else,” commented Williams. “I couldn’t be more serious.” When her face isn’t glued five inches from a phosphorescent image of an unfinished front page, she shares her opinions at a decibel level that should be made illegal. When she is not whipping her newspaper staffers into shape, Williams strategizes her “diet Nazi” regime and frequents her local gym. Williams added, “It seems that I obsess with going to the gym more than I actually go.” It takes intangible quantities of concentration and prowess to mold a senseless block of text and dribble into the respected publication. Surely, DHHS will suffer an immense loss when Williams departs this year. -Devin Valenciano

Kristin Wong San Jose State Kristin Wong is thrilled about her upcoming summer activities, which include vacationing in Kauai and taking a cruise in the Caribbean. She has high hopes of becoming an occupational therapist and starting a family after her education at San Jose. But that does not mean she will not miss learning from her favorite educator, Nate Ritscher, spending her free time at the piano, or playing the violin for orchestra. It was hard for Wong to determine whether Calculus with Marc Degen or AP Chemistry with Bill Cunningham was her hardest class. However, neither stopped her from participating in Key Club and CSF. The one piece of advice Wong would give to freshmen? “Don’t get senior-itis!” - Jake Rosen

Jeff Zhang USC Jeff Zhang prides himself on his “confidence and swagger.” Confidence may be an understatement. Of all of the students at Dana Hills, surely Zhang is one of the most active participants in programs and clubs. He plays basketball and runs track, was a member of the marching band for two years, is a vice president of both CSF and NHS, founded the club ACE, and is the ICC commissioner of ASU. Zhang is quite simply not fond of free time. He despises AP classes, even though he has taken 11 throughout his high school career. Apparently the pain of an AP Chemistry test paid off though–Zhang will attend USC on a full-ride scholarship to major in biochemical engineering. - Devin Valenciano

THE PAPER DANA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

Chin and Simmons Named Dana Hills Scholar Athletes of the Year By Lexi Cotcamp Sports Editor

While many students are honored with the title of scholar athlete in their respective sports, only two athletes had the honor of Dana Hills Scholar Athlete bestowed upon them. Traditionally, the two students with the highest GPA, a letter in two different varsity sports, and four varsity letters overall are chosen as Dana Hills Scholar Athletes.

Roger Chin With an insane GPA of 4.56, a humorous personality, and major swimming skills, Roger Chin was awarded the

title of Scholar Athlete for his achievements in swimming and water polo. Swarthmore-bound Chin received four letters total during his four years on swim and water polo. He obtained letters for the backstroke and the 200 meter. Chin will attend Swarthmore, a small Philadelphia liberal arts college, in the fall and plans to swim during his college years. As one of his most notable achievements during high school, Chin qualified for CIF in the backstroke and placed 15th in CIF finals. Despite his many accomplishments, making time for both academics and sports wasn’t always easy for Chin, who revealed that he would often be at school for 12 hours juggling different events. He commented,” I’ve been swimming my whole life, but I will say it is hard to do homework in a speedo...” On the girls’ side, Leyla Simmons was surprised to receive the Scholar Athlete award for her outstanding performances in tennis and academics. Simmons played on the varsity tennis team for all four years, most frequently for doubles with Victoria Wing. Amidst staying up late to

finish monstrous homework assignments and completing two or more strenuous tennis practices a day, Simmons championed four letters in tennis and a 4.27 GPA. Smith remarked, “My proudest moment was winning CIF my junior and senior year. Sweeping my final match senior year was amazing too.” In the fall, Simmons will attend Oklahoma State University on a full-ride tennis scholarship.

Outstanding Athletes Achieve Admission to Wall of Fame By Lexi Cotcamp Sports Editor

Leyla Simmons “To those who dream of being scholar athletes: Make sure you do your homework and work your hardest because it is most definitely possible if you work for it,” smiled Simmons.

Le crème de la crème, the icing on the cake, the holy grail, and possibly the most prestigious honor an athlete can receive: entrance to the Wall of Fame. In order to gain a place on the Wall of Fame, students must acquire six letters in two

different sports in addition to First or Second Team All League honors in both areas. Superior athleticism and a desire to crush opponents drives these amazing individuals. Twins Ryan Valdes and Tyler Valdes, who both competed in track and field and cross country for all four years of high school, received eight letters each. Both twins will attend Stanford in the fall with reduced tutition due to their

running skills. Fellow cross country and track athletes, Zak Phillips, Breelan Matranga and Heather Balbier all achieved a spot on the Wall of Fame. Anthony Kaspar’s football and wrestling skills, Michael Matchett’s swimming and water polo prowess and Mackay Smith’s football and volleyball domination secured these athletes a coveted spot in the hall of fame.
