Bangladesh are the reigning champions from the previous Games six years ago and Spanish coach Gonzalo Sanchez Moreno has taken up the challenge of repeating that performance this time around. Bangladesh women’s football team will also lock horns with India, albeit under different circumstances, today. If the women in red and green earn at least a point against the hosts then they will fight against Nepal for the gold. l

Tiger cubs look to end on a high n Mazhar Uddin Following their heartbreaking semi-final loss against the West Indies, Bangladesh will be looking to end the Under-19 World Cup on a winning note when they face Sri Lanka in the third place playoff at Fatullah’s Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium today. Mehedi Hasan and his troop displayed some brilliant cricket to reach the last four of the age-level tournament for the first time in history but the high-flying Windies youngsters brought the junior Tigers right back down to earth with a thrilling three-wicket win last Thursday. With that said, the junior Tigers have the golden opportunity to register Bangladesh’s best ever performance in the U-19 World Cup when they take on the Lankan youngsters, who lost to India in the first semi-final.

Bangladesh’s previous best finish came in the 2006 edition in Sri Lanka when Mushfiqur Rahim’s side ended fifth. The side also comprised Shakib al Hasan, Shamsur Rahman and Suhrawardi Shuvo among others and Mehedi and his team mates will be ea-

ger to surpass their heroes. Bangladesh U-19 coach Mizanur Rahman and the team think-tank have persisted with the opening combination of Pinak Ghosh and Saif Hasan throughout the tournament but the partnership has performed with mixed results. The team management therefore, might tinker with a new opening wicket pair today. Among other changes, off-spinner Saeed Sarkar proved to be expensive against the Windies so it will be no surprise if he finds himself out of the playing XI. The Lankans, on the other hand, were totally outplayed by India in the other semi and will no doubt be desperate to finish off their campaign with a win. Lankan captain Charith Asalanka will once again be expected to play a vital role with both bat and ball, along with opening batsman Avishka Fernando and paceman Asitha Fernando. l
