AL PACINO accepts BFI award with girlfriend Lucila Sola

Jonakir Alo is Bangladesh’s Oscar entry

n Entertainment Desk

n Entertainment Desk The Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies (BFFS) has selected Khalid Mahmud Mithu’s “Jonakir Alo” as Bangladesh’s official entry to the Oscars 2014 in the “best foreign language film” category. Mithu earlier won the ‘best director’ award for his film at the Brasov International Film Festival (BRIFF) as well as the Audience Choice Award at the 12th Asian Film Festival in Mumbai. The film has participated in four international film festivals so far, including Tribeca Film Festival, Florida Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival and Jaipur Film Festival. The film’s story revolves around a love triangle involving Kabita, who dreams of working for children’s welfare and is torn between adopting a child and her responsibility as the daughter-in-law of a conservative family. She gets to meet the legendary artist SM Sultan and gets swayed by his philosophy. Emon, who played one of the lovers, said: “I am really happy about Jonakir Alo’s selection as Bangladesh’s foreign language Oscar entry. I’m looking forward to doing more such films, besides mainstream commercial films.” Gazi Rakayet essayed the role of SM Sultan while Bidya Sinha Saha Mim played the female lead. Emon and Kalyan played the two lovers. The film was produced by Impress Telefilm. l

To accept a BFI Fellowship, accompanied by a beauty half his age, “Godfather” actor Al Pacino took centre stage at London’s Corinthia Hotel for a dinner in the actor’s honour. Lucila Sola, 35, was a vision in red, beaming from ear-to-ear as she walked faithfully beside her 74-year-old partner who was awarded the film organisation’s highest accolade while in town for its 58th annual film festival. Al looked debonair in an all-black suit for the dinner hosted by BFI Chairman Greg Dyke and BFI CEO, Amanda Nevill, whom he later accepted a special introduction from. When he took to the stage, the legendary actor and director said: “This is such a great honour... the BFI is a wonderful thing, how it keeps films alive. “It’s an honour to be here and receive this. I’m overwhelmed – people I’ve adored have received this award. I appreciate this so much, thank you.” Though his solemn face could have disguised his gratitude for the impressive recognition. While stunning Lucila was beaming with pride, the actor couldn’t muster a smile on Wedneday night. Industry legends including Orson Welles, Dame Judi Dench, Ken Loach and the late Lord Attenborough have received the fellowship in the past. It is awarded by the BFI Board of Governors and is presented for outstanding achievement in film and television. Since 1983, a total of 78 fellowships have been awarded. Pacino, who won the best actor Oscar in 1993 for his role in “Scent of a Woman,” is best known for his performances in the “Godfather” trilogy, “Scarface” and “Dog Day Afternoon.” Presenting him with the fellowship, Mr Dyke called the actor “a true icon”. “Al Pacino is one of the greatest actors the world has ever seen, and a visionary director of stage and screen,” he said. l

With her latest hit, Streisand also became the only female artist to grab the spot on the Billboard album chart on 10 different occasions. She now holds fourth place on the list of acts with the most number one albums, tailing The Beatles’ 19 chart-toppers, Jay Z’s 13 records and Bruce Springsteen’s 11. “Partners” features Streisand singing classic songs with male artists, such as “New York State of Mind” with Billy Joel, “Somewhere” with Josh Groban and “People” with Stevie Wonder. Parineeti Chopra starrer “Daawat-e-Ishq” has minted more than Sonam Kapoor’s“Khoobsurat” in the past four days, but they didn’t meet the expectations of the audience, said an expert of Bollywood films. Both the films released on last Friday all over India with high expectations. Featuring Sonam Kapoor in the lead role, “Khoobsurat” is a remake of the 1980 Rekha starrer “Khubsoorat.” With a strong fan following of the movie’s lead male actor – Pakistani sensation Fawad Khan – many people were expected to catch it in cinema halls, but going by the movie’s earnings it seems like the movie buffs were not that excited about the film. On the other hand, “Daawat-e-Ishq” also couldn’t pull in the audience to theatres much. It minted Rs 15.63 crore in four days, said a statement. The movie’s lead actors Aditya Roy Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra had also gone on a “Food Yatra” to promote the film but it seems that the audience did not buy it much. l

Disney’s Frozen sued for $250m n Entertainment Desk Disney’s global hit “Frozen” might be about a queen with magical icy powers who accidentally freezes her kingdom, but one woman is convinced that the storyline is a rip-off of her own life. Latin American author Isabella Tanikumi is sueing Disney for plagiarism in a $250m lawsuit, claiming that the plot is based on her 2010 autobiography and not Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale, “The Snow Queen.”

Tanikumi’s self-published book, “Yearnings of the Heart,” details her experiences of growing up in the Peruvian Andes but surprisingly, no chattering snowmen, talking trolls or secret ice palaces feature. Nevertheless, Tanikumi’s three page complaint insists that Frozen stole the story, characters and general feeling from her work and demands a jury trial. She lists 18 examples of what she claims to be plagiarism from characters’ names to the animated film’s central sisterly relationship. l
