Teacher shortage hits government schools in Pirojpur n Our Correspondent, Pirojpur Educational activities in six government high schools in Pirojpur district are being hampered due to shortage of teachers. According to sources, the total posts in these schools are 161, of which 67 are lying vacant. The academic works of the schools are run by acting headmaster. As a result, sometimes it is difficult to take decisions.

‘I am taking classes for Bangla and sometime also work as acting headmaster. It is difficult for me do the two things at a time as sometimes I have to attend meetings’ Bhandoria Bandar Government Girls’ High School was nationalised in 1986. Around 400 students are studying in the school. Among a total of 13 posts including head master, seven posts have remained vacant for many days. Shopna Roy, acting head master, said: “No teachers were recruited for accounting, English, physics, geography, Bangla and Social Science subjects.” “Guest teachers are taking classes for those subjects. In return, we give them remuneration,” he said. Senjuti Ray, a ninth grade student of the school said: “We are continuing study in huge crisis due to lack of teachers.” Md Babar Talukder, acting head master of Kaukhali KG Union Govt High School said: “There are around 475 students in the school.” The total posts of teachers includ-

ing head master are 16 while there are now 14 teachers. There are no teachers for Hindu religion and accounting subjects. Nazma Ara Khanom, acting head mistress of Pirojpur Government Girls’ High School said: “We have not had a geography teacher for more than 12 years.” She added, 30 teachers were present among a total of 52. The number of students was 1523. “The posts of two clerks have remained vacant since two years. We have only one fourth-class employee among a total of five,” the acting head mistress added. Dilapidated roads cause trouble in Pirojpur n Our Correspondent, Pirojpur

Around 20km roads among a total of 31km roads stretching from PirojpurNazirpur-Tungipara have remained in awfully dilapidated conditions for months, much to the sufferings of hundreds of passengers in that region. The width of the road is 32 feet. Several big potholes developed in the middle of the highway. This is the straight road for the locals of Patharghata upzila in Barisal and Mathbaria upazila in Pirojpur to the Bangabandhu Mazhar in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj. Passengers have to ply through a time-consuming alternative route since they can’t use the highway due to its decrepit condition. In a recent visit to the highway it

was noticed that the condition of the roads from Pirojpur town to Kodomtola Bazar and from northern part of Charkhola Bridge to Nazirpur Bridge are quite good. But passengers have to face tremendous troubles while plying the middle part of the road starting after Kodomtoli Bazar to Charkhola Bridge. Delwar Hossain, a resident of Kodomtola area said: ‘’The area goes under knee-deep water during rainy season.’’ Zakir Hossain of Sriramkathi area of Nazirpur upazila said: “We go to Pirojpur through Durgapur area under Sriramkathu union of Nazirpur upazila. We try to avoid the highway as it has a lot of cracks and dust in different parts.” Headmaster of Panchpara Government Primary School Sonjoy Malongi

said: “Dust from the roads enter into the nose and eyes of the school children while crossing the highway due to its poor condition. As a result, they have been facing breathing problems.” Bacchu Mia, a microbus driver said: “During summer season drivers don’t dare to cross the highway. Usually drivers avoid the road as bumpy rides damage our vehicles. Passengers have to pay extra fare while going through an alternative way. Sometimes, they don’t agree to pay higher fares.” Alamgir Hossain, president of BusLabour Union of Pirojpur said: “Vehicles move slowly due to the run-down condition of the road.” Nur-e-Alam Siddique, a Local of Matibhanga area said: “It is difficult to cross the road by walking.”

Riazul Islam, a bus driver informed that his vehicle got damaged earlier on February 17 while heading towards Pirojpur through the road. It cost him Tk1300 to repair it. Atiqul Islam, deputy assistant engineer of Pirojpur Road Division said: “Two companies including BTSL and RBJB were awarded the contract of Tk10.31 lakh on October 19, 2010 for carpeting works on 7km road. Carpeting of 4km of the road has been completed and work of the rest 3km remained unfinished. We issued a letter to them to finish the work as soon as possible.” “We made a project of Tk40 crore to repair the road and sent it to the higher officials. The work will be started after getting allocation,” he added. l
