Movie Review

The Lives of Others “The Lives of Others” is an Oscar winning German movie written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It’s a remarkable political thriller, creating a tight knit story with a dark atmosphere that permeated East Berlin in the mideighties. The paranoia and fear of the Stasi is quite palpable as it examines two opposite sides of society Esha Aurora The central characters are an artistic couple who live together and perform on theater. On the other side of the spectrum, we see how the German Democratic Republic (GDR) controls its population while feeding them the high ideological propaganda of the Socialist Party and spying on them.

The movie begins with a Stasi officer giving a class on interrogations. We learn that while someone is being interrogated they are forced to sit on their hands, so that when they sweat on to the fabric, it can be used by sniffing dogs if they are hiding or trying to run away. We also learn that the Stasi watches and hears everything, and every other person is either forced to be an informant or do it willingly to get favours from the party.

The movie follows the life of a playwright Georg Dreyman and stage actress Christa-Maria Sieland played by Sebastian Koch and Martina Gedeck

respectively. Christa-Maria is a strikingly beautiful woman who has caught the eye of a high official from the socialist party. Unable to persuade her to be with him, he sends the Stasi to bug their shared apartment trying to dig up dirt on Dreyman and send him to jail. What unfolds is a tragic story of lives and how some people change with timeand circumstance while others are stoic when faced with such challenges.

We see the spy Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler played brilliantly by Ulrich Muhe whose own story is a case of life imitating art.

He was married to a woman who was a Stasi informant and he only discovered it after the wall fell. He gives a haunting performance as a robotic man with no emotions, only a sense of duty. The story beings with clear markers of good versus the evil, only to reveal a far more complex case of humanity injecting itself with things life conscience and love.

This is a movie that is well-constructed; that it doesn’t give you a second’s pause to fully realise the weight of the events unfolding. If you are remotely interested in history or a political thriller, this is a movie to watch. You will not come away disappointed.

The 2013 Hyundai Tucson might not be as big as its main rivals, but it compensates that with a handsome cabin, an ample list of features, sporty handling, and a low price. It is without a doubt a top pick for a small crossover.

The Ride There’s no getting around it: The Tucson rides firmly. Even though the ride is stiff, you won’t feel every ripple in the road.

Despite its stiffness, the Hyundai Tucson still manages to be decent to drive. On very smooth roads, the Hyundai handles pretty well for a small SUV. It doesn’t reel around like other cars do and it’s able to take tight turns fairly quickly. You don’t get a crashing or banging sensation that makes you think you’ve broken something.

Performance & handling The D-CVVT 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine’s 164 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque moves the small SUV with surprising haste; posting a 0-60mph run in 8.2 seconds. That’s 0.3 seconds faster than the 2013 Honda

CR-V. The drive-train provided good power off the line, and has pretty decent high end torque. Hyundai claims the Active Eco mode modifies engine and transmission controls to improve gas mileage. However, pressing the Active Eco button takes whatever fun there is in driving the Tucson right out of the equation. But, of course, one doesn’t have to press that button.

Exterior The Tucson is the first Hyundai to receive the automaker’s new “fluidic sculpture” design beliefs when it was redesigned for 2010 with bold curved bodylines. The same striking design appeared on the Sonata sedan in 2011 and later that year on the Elantra sedan. It is shorter than many of its competitors which add to the manoeuvrability in small parking spaces.

The exterior remains unchanged for 2013 apart from a few minor cosmetic changes here and there.

Interior The Tucson looks good on the inside.

It features a modern interior with attractive touches throughout. Leather is standard, as is dual-zone climate control with a Clean Air Ioniser, cruise control and trip computer.

The instrument panel features blue-lit gauges, and an iPod hook-up is

standard. The 60/40 split second row provides room for six-foot passengers, but its cargo volume is fairly smaller than many of its rivals. Last but not the least, the standard panoramic roof lets you enjoy the open sky from down under.

Safety & Reliability Six airbags are standard on the Tucson; Dual front airbags along with driver and front-passenger side-impact airbags and front and rear side air curtains.

Mrs Bibi (part II) Mrs Bibi had a tough day today. She had to do all the post Eid shopping. Mrs Bibi loves shopping though she will have you know how much she resents having to go spend her husband’s hard earned money on sequined explosions of a sari for Tk20,000 or so. She will have you know, that a Tk20,000 sari is too cheap to wear on an occasion such as her best friend’s wedding. Filled with exhaustion, Mrs Bibi has finally arrived home snubbing her nose at her purchases because people will know that her sari is cheap and they cannot afford as much as they could because of the global economic climate.

“What is this recession the mister speaks of? I don’t know why this is strangling our funds. I mean we are good, our

factories are working the same way they were five years ago. People are working the same amount of time as they used to.

Why am I the only one cutting cost here?

I mean its a wedding! The mister says we can’t afford a five star hotel in Bangkok this year either. How am I going to tell Dolly, Pinky, and Dimpi that we can’t go shopping for the new Louis Vuitton.

The mister tells me I can buy a knock off this year, that no one will know, but he doesn’t understand. I will know. Dolly, Pinky, and Dimpi will know. They have eagle eyes and they will whisper behind my back. Not to mention the daughter.

She won’t even allow me to wait outside her school with that. She says she’ll be too embarrassed. I can’t blame her. My

heart bleeds at the mister’s insensitivity.

He says they aren’t buying our products at the same price. Well then we need to make those lazy workers work more I say. People just don’t understand. Most workers are lazy and they steal from us.

When all we want to do is give them a good life.

This is not going to be a good holiday season. Nobody understands how hard it is to keep up in this country. All people do is want and want and want some more from you. If they could, they’d suck the blood right out of you. I don’t ask for much, all I wanted was a new purse, but the universe even denies me such a small request.

Survival

Criticism - a boon disguised as a curse When criticised, a lot of us tend to get defensive.

However, once the fire of our temper has died down and we ponder over the vile comments thrown our way, we realise that maybe silence would have been the best reaction.

Once we really think about it, any comment, be it good or bad, can be used to our benefit as long as we look at it from a positive perspective.

Perhaps they are right, perhaps we aren’t the image of perfection we believed ourselves to be.

There always is room for improvement, after all Tausif Sanzum We cannot stop people from saying what they want but it is in our hands how we would like to react, how we can gulp in the criticism, try to understand whether it is valid or not. In case it is a constructive criticism we can learn over a period of time how to internalise it and react accordingly.

If we learn to differentiate between valid and invalid criticism we can always work

upon improving ourselves. Sometimes criticisms unleash some unresolved issues of our life and thus give us a chance to resolve them for good. Human beings are conditioned in such a way that we see praises as good while criticisms are always negative. Being more open minded towards accepting criticisms will help us go beyond the black and white ideology and explore grey areas.

At times people criticise to help us improve but we think that they are judging us. However over time we can learn to understand the difference and react more positively. At times it is pleasant to hear criticisms rather than only ear pleasing praises. Sometimes you can just ignore criticism because the more time you spend dealing with negativity, the less time you will give

to other important things in your life.

Criticism at times point towards our imperfection. Our imperfections make us human and as such being more positive towards criticism will only help us to feel positive, bring happiness, peace, and success in our life.

Even though they put an opera house to shame, no matter how much you deny it, there is a certain pleasure in watching your woman crib, nag, and cry over things that barely matter.

The intensity of that gaze may have you shivering in fear, but it also sends shivers of delight in you as you see a glimpse of the dominatrix in her.

The death stare You’ve forgotten their birthday, or you’ve left your clothes on the floor yet again.

The wrath of her anger is unleashed and summed up in one deadly stare. When words fail them, their eyes speak, and that too in volumes of fury that stuns you to silence. As you try to read them and comprehend the extent of their murderous rage, you lose yourself in their eyes and everything else it entails.

Get off the speed-dial Breaking up is sometimes like kicking a substance abuse habit. To stay “clean,” you have to remove all traces of the substance you’re abusing, so that they don’t tempt you off the wagon. Similarly, what you want to do immediately after a break-up, is to cut off all contact with your ex, and remove, as much as possible, reminders of her. Stow away the pictures, delete the texts and e-mails, and knock her off your contacts. Do NOT get in touch at all within the first six months. It might be complicated if you have mutual friends but it is important that you do so. Maybe someday you can be friends again, but it is not today.

Get away Getting rid of reminders might be easier said than done, especially if you’d been together a significant amount of time.

Places have associations. A good way to get away from this is to really get away.

Go out of the city for a week or so. Get a change of scenery. Spending some time apart from your former partner is easier to do when you do it somewhere that doesn’t remind you of her.

Get fit Post-breakup is the hardest time to find the motivation to hit the gym, but it is the best time to do so. You’re suddenly back in the market, so it’s time to give the merchandise a tune-up before you stock the shelves, so to speak. Hitting the gym will give you a new routine to replace the one you had with her, keep you too busy to mope, and the endorphins and the self-esteem boost from your newly-fit bod can’t hurt.

Get some ‘Bro time’ A supportive group of friends will help you deal better than you would alone.

Try Out

Sparkling steps Ever wondered what to do with those dreary pumps that you’ve worn so much that all it is worth now is just a passing glance? For those of you who are envious of the shimmer of glittered heels, read on to find out how to make one of your own, that too, on a budget.

All you’ll need is an old pair of heels, a hearty dose of glitter and a whole lot of oomph to rock those glamorous clickers Natasha Rahman

Supplies: v An old pair of pumps/stilettos v Two packets of glitter in a colour of your choice v Aica glue v Fabric glue v Small sized painting brush v Gloves v Old newspaper Step 1 Choose pumps/stilettos that have a flat, smooth base. Leather or patent leather will be a good choice. However, steer clear of suede or any other textured heel.

Wipe it clean using a dry cloth.

Step 2 Place a newspaper on your workstation, keep your shoes and supplies on it to avoid getting the surroundings covered in glitter. Start with the back of your heel, begin adding glue (aica) to one section using smooth, swift strokes. Make sure it’s a thin layer, do not lump it on or it will create an uneven finish.

Step 3 Put on your gloves and keep your glitter handy. Allow a few seconds for the glue to dry, till it reaches a semi-sticky consistency. Then take a pinch of glitter and sprinkle it evenly on top of the glued section. Keep doing this until you have evenly covered that section with glitter.

Step 4 Continue applying glue to other sections of your shoe and repeating step three. Once you have covered the entire shoe with glitter, use the fabric glue all over to lock the glitter in.

Q: I have recently received an internship at a government job abroad and I was wondering what would be the best way to make a style statement as I am aware politicians aren’t known for their fashion sense. I want to stand out without breaking any rules, how do I go on about that?

A: There are plenty of negative jibes we can make about politicians, but one thing is definitely not a secret: politicians have horrible fashion sense. Granted, there are a select few who seem to get things right and it shouldn’t be too difficult for you either.

First things first, if your suit is properly fitted, you’re already ahead in the race.

Ill-fitted clothing is the first thing that needs attending to. Once that is out of the way, grey and navy suits will fit pretty much any occasion. Leave the black suits for the evening events.

Also, try wearing more solid ties and stay away from the colour red – it’s unflattering. Avoid loafers and buttondown collars, as classy as they may be, those are for your days off rather than in a political forum.

It’s a really beautiful watch but I’m worried that it’s small at 28mm. By today’s standard, that’s too small. Will it look too feminine on my wrist?

A: We tend to forget, in the world of horology, big doesn’t necessarily mean better. Sure, many men feel the need to flash their expensive wrists at special events, but it doesn’t signify the appreciation of the timepiece.

28mm isn’t really that small or too thin. In fact, many well-known and fashion forward gentlemen have worn women’s watches as well. They felt that the same exact men’s version is too big and far from the vintage fitting of wrist watches. No one is saying to wear women’s watches, just strap on the one that fits best.

You’re in a public place and you’re going to sweat, so it’s common courtesy for you to control your body odours. j Dress comfortably. You want to be able to stretch and move around. If you’re uncomfortable in your clothes, you’ll be more worried about your outfit than getting fit. j Make sure your pants are intact (no holes, no fraying, etc) to avoid embarrassing scenarios and unwanted attention.

j Wear a sports bra. If you don’t want gravity to pull your girls downwards, invest in a well-fitted sports bra. j Save your make-up till after the workout. A face full of make-up can be harmful for your skin while you’re sweating up a storm. It clogs pores and may cause your skin to break out. j Always wear proper footwear. Minimising the visibility of stretch marks Stretch marks are an issue that most men and women face. These marks are pinkish streaks that appear on your body and eventually fade to a lighter shade. They are commonly associated with pregnancy, but women of all ages can get them, pregnant or not Navin Ahmed Stretch marks can be caused by a number of different issues, but it is mainly the result of rapid stretching of the skin. This can happen during pregnancy, or just from a growth spurt.

Stretch marks can also be genetic – you might be more likely to get them if your mother had them.

Can you get rid of them?

Unfortunately, you cannot get rid of stretch marks. However, there are things you can do to fade their visibility.

How? Laser therapy uses intense wavelengths of light to help grow collagen, elastin or melanin in your skin. Tretinoin cream (Retin-A) can help rebuild collagen and make the stretch marks look more like your normal skin. Just make sure to start treating the stretch marks early on, when they are still pinkish or purple.

Microdermabrasion involves a device that blows tiny crystals onto your skin.

These crystals gently polish your skin’s surface. This is a better option for older stretch marks that have faded to white. Vitamin E oil or lotions containing vitamin E oil may be used to lighten the marks. Studies prove that pregnant women who used a cream with a form of vitamin E in it developed fewer marks than those given something else.

Here’s a great homemade recipe to reduce and prevent stretch marks:

Mix 2tbsp Vitamin E oil (which promotes skin elasticity) and 1 cup Almond oil (which is a great moisturiser) and ¼ cup brown sugar (which is an amazing exfoliant). Massage gently for 15 minutes then rinse off.

Some of my personal favourites are: fresh fruits, dried fruits, and nuts mix, veggie slices, yogurt or yogurt drinks, fruit or green smoothies, home-made veggie or lean meat wraps and sandwiches, health food bars, etc. Trust me, taking a few extra minutes the night before or the morning of is SO worth it when your tummy starts growling, sugar levels are low and all you see around are deep-fried, greasy and sugary junk. Yikes!

Buy on your way: If you weren’t able to pack in advance, you can make good choices during your transit.

Take some time to look around at your options. There has been a trend toward offering healthier options at most food vendors and restaurants now. Just the other day, I had a veggie-wrap at McDonalds of all places and treated myself to a berryyogurt parfait afterwards.

Keep it smart and mindful: Smart menu choices are crucial when travelling. Choose items that are steamed, broiled, baked, grilled, poached or roasted over sauteed or fried. Ask for dressing or condiments on the side and pick from the variety of vinaigrettes over sour cream, cheese

or mayonnaise. For desserts, opt for fruit salads or frozen yogurt over ice cream or cakes. Staying hydrated is a must with water or low-sugar juices instead of pop or soft drinks. Eating unhealthy food while travelling may be easy, but it won’t make your travels fun. Fried greasy and sugary food will only spike up your blood sugar levels way high and drop you hard in a slump of indigestion, upset stomach and low energy. Who wants that on a vacation? Not me!

Remember, a little extra care and awareness to your food choices can make or break your health AND holiday. So choose wisely and happy trotting.

Cinnamon french toast - a late night saviour

Fareeha Chowdhury is an avid food enthusiast and professional cupcake baker who studied courses in pastry techniques at the French Culinary institute of Manhattan.

A cool way you can serve this as a snack for friends make cinnamon French toast kebabs! Just dice up the pieces of bread into squares, put about five pieces on each skewer and dust with powdered sugar, ground cinnamon, and a drizzle of maple syrup! It’s a fun way to serve this simple dish and it looks adorable and is easy to eat too

Last week, I was spending the night at a friend’s house and we got really hungry around 2am. We scouted the fridge for food and as usual, found nothing. What I usually do at these times of desperation is make French toast.

The ingredients are easily found in any kitchen. I asked my friend to make it and was bewildered when she said she had no idea how. So this week, I figured I’d give out this amazingly easy and quick recipe for all my fellow late night snackers out there who can make good use of it Fareeha Chowdhury

*Cinnamon French toast is usually made with sliced loaves of Brioche French bread. Since we live in Dhaka, and we don’t usually find fine breads here, we are going to use normal white bread for this recipe.

Ingredients (makes 12 pieces) • • • • •

1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup milk 1 pinch salt 3 eggs 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon white sugar • 12 thick slices bread • Powdered sugar and ground cinnamon for décor.

Directions • In a large mixing bowl, measure out the flour and slowly whisk in the milk.

• Add the other ingredients into this mixture (salt, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and sugar) and whisk it until it’s

smooth.

Place a frying pan over medium heat and put a tablespoon olive oil in it.

• Dip each of the bread slices into the mixture until completely drenched and cook the bread on

each side until golden brown.

Serve it while its hot with a dust of powdered sugar and ground cinnamon and maybe a little pat of butter to melt on top!

This is going to be a life changer if you like to eat at odd hours. It’s easy, sweet, and satisfying! This can also be taught to your cook at home to be served as breakfast in the morning with honey or maple syrup. Fruits can go with it too.

Every day, there are innovations taking place and coffee lovers are not left behind. Just drinking coffee is too mainstream now-a-days. The passionate baristas have taken presentation to new heights with unique art floating in your cup. The artwork varies from cup to cup; sometimes a smiley face or at other times a leaf. This makes the coffee more tempting rather than plain old boring coffee. Many might not know what coffee art is if they haven’t been to places like North End or Gloria Jeans Iffat Zerin Haque The wonderful smell of coffee can lure someone in when one passes by the small coffee shop in Shahjadpur (opposite Cambrian College) called NORTH END Coffee Roasters. Usually the smell doesn’t meet up to the expectation when it comes to the real thing. But this is different or probably one just misunderstands the excitement for drinking the smiley face in the cup rather than the taste of the coffee itself.

The baristas in the coffee shop are really nice and this one in particular is very enthusiastic about coffee art named Farhan Hoss. Farhan says: “A cup of coffee can change one’s day. If someone comes in with a bad mood and I serve him/her a perfect coffee and if the person leaves our coffee shop happy, that’s what we strive for.”

Farhan has been practicing coffee art for the last two years and tries to come up with new designs every day. He not only designs the leaf, smiley face or heart on the coffee but also draws faces of people. Farhan explains: “If someone requests to draw his/her face on their coffee, we try our best to do so.”

Coffee art also known as “latte art” is created by pouring steamed milk into a shot of espresso in order to design the surface of the coffee. There are several styles to make coffee art but the two main styles are free pouring and etching. Free pouring is the method where a design is created while the milk is poured and etching is requires tools to create the design, which is done after the pour. To make perfect coffee art, one needs fancy equipment but some experiments can be done with the help of the internet. Anyone can Google “how to make coffee art at home” or find videos on YouTube and the information they find might be helpful enough to carry out their own coffee art projects.
