INDING YOUR MOM TRIBE IS TRICKY BUSINESS.

I feel like I’m still navigating it five years in. When I had my daughter, Betty, I decided I wanted to stay home with her, and we were new to Frisco just moving from the Knox Henderson area. All of a sudden, I went from being a working girl in an office all day to being out in the burbs trying to keep this tiny human alive. Shell shocked is probably the best way to describe the transition. I tried awkwardly making conversations with other moms on the playground, and it was painful. It felt like I was dating all over again. You might hang out with a mom a few times, and a few play dates in, you realize that you all don’t really mesh (or their kid is a biter, and the mom doesn’t do anything about it—that’s a play date buzz kill), and you’re back to square one. I finally met my first mom friend at my neighborhood Mom’s Night Out, then my next at the neighborhood Luau when the after party spilled over into one of the houses nearby. My favorite way I met a mom friend was at swimming lessons when I was sitting next to a mom, and our kids were doing very awkward dolphin kicks. We were both laughing hysterically at them, and we became fast friends from there. Slowly but surely, my mom tribe developed, and there is no one better to commiserate with when your baby refuses to nap or your 5 year old won’t. stop. talking. Mom friends are essential to surviving daily life without losing your cool. My hope is that this Neighborhoods Issue helps you find all the places that moms are hanging out (and more importantly having fun), and you too can find your tribe who you can laugh hysterically with on this wild ride we call parenting. Get out there girl!

ANKED THE BEST

suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Coppell has a superfluity of restaurants and parks for the family to bask in. Erika Slater, mom of three, raves about all of the renovated parks. Her go-to place? “Old Town Coppell,” she says. “Splash pad, restaurants, coffee shop and a playground for the kids. Our city hosts several events for residents, including the farmers market, concerts in the park and other fun events.” Fun fact: The city consciously and purposefully promotes recycling, volunteering

and fundraising year-round, making it an environmentally friendly city. Coppell residents can attend Coppell, Carrollton-Farmers Branch or Lewisville Independent School Districts, depending on where they live. “[It’s] the only place to raise our children,” Slater says. Valley Ranch, a community within Irving, is a planned development that houses mostly single families and falls within Coppell ISD and the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. Now that the Cowboys have moved away, Valley Ranch is best known for its natural beauty and countryside, homey feel.

MEET ERIKA SLATER KIDS’ AGES: 12, 10, 8 WHY SHE LOVES COPPELL: It [has] a small-town feel in the heart of the Metroplex. HIDDEN GEM: The parks. All have been renovated and are beautiful for biking, tossing the Frisbee or fishing. COPPELL IN ONE WORD: Everything. Family, caring, friendly, fun.

COPPELL FARMERS MARKET

The best way to learn about gardening is to get your kids involved early. Every market Saturday, scurry to Garden Time for Kids—a chance for children of all ages to do a craft or gardening activity at the Learning Garden; past events include veggie tastings and rock painting. When the weather is warm, there’s a splash pad as well as a playground with a Minyard’s grocery truck for the kiddos to pretend they’re running their own market. After a morning of fun at the market, grab a burger from Twisted Root. 768 W. Main St., Coppell coppellfarmersmarket.org

“F

RIENDLY” IS HOW GRACE

Fleenor encapsulates her city—she says Flower Mound is “filled with kind and genuine people.” Her husband helped build Fort Wildflower, the castle-like playground at Heritage Park, when the town held a community build several years ago. (The parks and recreation department has since gone wild, literally, installing a wildflower area, splash pad, trails, disc golf course and bronze animal statues.) This united effort is the perfect picture of FloMo and neighboring Lewisville and Highland Village: Three family-focused cities that celebrate small, homegrown progress and prize the beautiful

natural areas they’re nestled in, including miles of lakeshore. These enclaves might not have dazzling new high-rises, but they do have good schools (and school marching bands), and they’re constantly adding reasons for families to love living here, from arts and culture events in the revitalized Old Town Lewisville to Flower Mound’s long-awaited Riverwalk—not to mention the ever-popular Shops at Highland Village. Some people might call this area a bubble, and maybe they’re right, but residents are well positioned to explore both Dallas and Fort Worth before returning to the quiet neighborhoods, plentiful parks and sense of unity that make these suburbs feel like home.

FLOURISH FLOWERS & GIFTS

As of May, this charming florist shop in Old Town Lewisville hosts monthly story times in its kiddie seating area, in addition to an ongoing schedule of floral arranging and crafting classes for children and adults. The only thing missing from this sprawling family hub is a playground—but not for long: An all-abilities playground with synthetic turf surfacing, musical features and swings for all ages is opening this summer, plus a 40-by-40-foot shaded seating area for parents. The city’s also installed 13 new umbrellas next to the splash pad (hallelujah!), so you can stay cool as your kiddos explore the spiraling water feature that’s designed to flow like a high-tech creek with 66 fountains and bubblers. 310 Highland Village Road, Highland Village; 972/317-7430 hvparks.com STONE CREEK PARK

Thanks to the picturesque creek, this park has long been a favorite for family photo sessions and exploring the wilder (and wetter) side of Flower Mound. Now the park has a brandnew playground, with synthetic turf replacing

the old wood-chip surface. There are two canopy-shaded play structures, musical panels and swings, including a generation swing that allows Mom or Dad to swing with their child. THRUSH PARK WEST is also sporting a new

PLAY STREET MUSEUM

Hard to believe it’s already been a year since PSM Flower Mound opened—and quickly became a local go-to for parties and play dates. The park-themed space is great for one to two hours away from the sweltering summer sun. Check the website for open play hours, and take advantage of free Wi-Fi while the kids tinker with toys under a very real-looking tree, walk dogs from the pretend pet shop and take orders at the diner. $11.50 admission for kids 1–8. PSM really shines in the party department, whether you need a fun space for your DIY party or you want museum staff to take the reins with one of the adorable preset themes. 6050 Long Prairie Road, Suite 600, Flower Mound; 972/349-1138 flowermound.playstreetmuseum.com

MARKET STREET

The Terrace at Market Street is a win-win for families: Parents can grab something inside to sip or snack at the umbrella-shaded patio tables while the kiddos have a blast on the synthetic turf playground. The Terrace is open daily from 6am–10pm, so you can meet friends for a brunch play date, or enjoy a family dinner on a summer evening—there’s even live music (with food specials to boot) on Thursday nights during select months. While you’re there, take a minute to read the plaque in memory of Luke Tharp, a local 3-year-old who loved the playground and whose parents helped upgrade the space for other kids to enjoy. 3800 Long Prairie Road, Flower Mound; 972/355-4007

CORINTH DENTON LAKE DALLAS

WORDS LISA SALINAS

MEET ILONA JADE KIDS: I have a 15-month-old girl! WHERE SHE LIVES: Denton WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO KID PLACE: South Lakes Park Trail. A HIDDEN GEM PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT:

BELOW //

Opt to sit on the rooftop at LSA Burger Co., adorned with rotating murals (they change every year in April) by local artists.

The downtown square. There is so much to do. For date night we love going to eat at Austin St. Truck Stop. My favorite coffee shop is West Oak—I love that they make their own flavors for coffee. Denton is also the place for a lot of outdoor music events and festivals. It has an old town personality with young, fresh college students keeping it lively. HER CITY IN ONE WORD: Eclectic. ECLECTIC AVENUE

RIVE UP INTERSTATE 35, AND

you will find yourself in the Lake Cities and then the affectionately named Little D. This eclectic town, as Denton resident and mom of one Ilona Jade refers to it, is filled with fun places and activities for the whole family—just take a look at our list of events you need to mark in your calendar. Although we don’t list all of them (though we wish we could), there is something going on just about every week. And that’s what makes Denton stand out from the rest of North Texas (in addition to the out-of-the-box restaurants and artistic vibe)—there is an instant feeling of welcome here. “There are amazing places to eat, a great library for story time, a small enough community to where you see the same people at the

local coffee shop—yes, there are a few amazing local roasters,” says Jade. As you drive through the town, notice the murals along the streets and bookstores. The town of Corinth also possesses that familyfriendly ambiance, hosting several kid-centric/can’t-miss events during the year. And not to boast, but Corinth is home to some pretty well-to-do families; several multi-million dollar homes are situated here. Lake Dallas, which borders Lake Lewisville, is ideal for shore-side views. Residents take advantage of Willow Grove Park here—the quintessential spot for summertime fun along the lake. LAKE SIDE RENTALS // (above) Kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards are available for all ages to rent from Lakeside Adventure Rentals at Willow Grove Park (which also has a playground, picnic tables and campsites). lakesideadventurerentals.webs.com

As a photographer, this is a city I can thrive in, with cute coffee shops to meet clients at and amazing locations to photograph families and couples in. I find cool places each time I look. –ILONA JADE, DENTON MOM OF ONE

T

HE QUAINT BUT AFFLUENT TOWNS

south of Denton offer a taste of that Texas allure we’re known for: horses and stables proliferate in this part of North Texas, where there are more ranches and rolling hills than highways and high-rises. Families love this part of town for the ample space. Bartonville is the best example—most homes sit on 2- or 5-acre lots with plenty of yard for kids and pets to roam. Then there are the family-oriented master-planned communities that have taken root, such as Harvest, a neighborhood built to honor Argyle’s farming heritage where families can grow produce together and participate in a host of other outdoor activities.

Sports also bring people together here—in fact, Argyle High School just won its second straight state baseball championship. And though a commute is required for most shopping and cultural excursions, residents can take advantage of nearby Pilot Knoll Park on Lake Lewisville and the Flower Mound Public Library; as long as you’re a resident of Denton County, you can get a library card.

KIMZEY’S COFFEE // No need to fly to Disney World for a fairy-tale experience; this local coffee shop is reminiscent of Snow White’s thatch-roofed cottage and serves up specialty drinks like “babyccinos” for kids (steamed milk with vanilla or chocolate flavoring, marshmallows and sprinkles), only a dollar a cup. 429 U.S. Highway 377 S., Argyle; 940/240-1001 kimzeys.com

LEWISVILLE

A year after opening the first STEM Academy at Donald Elementary, Lewisville ISD expanded the program to two more campuses, Polser Elementary in Carrollton and Valley Ridge Elementary in Lewisville, for the 2019–20 school year. Student applicants were chosen through a randomized selection process and will receive daily engineering instruction and project-based learning experiences, priming them for future dream jobs as roboticists, programmers or engineers. Stay tuned for additional STEM Academy campuses coming to Marcus High School and The Colony High School attendance zones. www.lisd.net
