INDING YOUR MOM SQUAD IS TRICKY BUSINESS.
I feel like I’m still navigating it five years in. When I had my daughter, Betty, I decided I wanted to stay home with her, and we were new to Frisco just moving from the Knox-Henderson area. All of a sudden, I went from being a working girl in an office all day to being out in the ’burbs trying to keep this tiny human alive. Shellshocked is probably the best way to describe the transition. I tried awkwardly making conversations with other moms on the playground, and it was painful. It felt like I was dating all over again. You might hang out with a mom a few times, and a few play dates in, you realize that you all don’t really mesh (or their kid is a biter, and the mom doesn’t do anything about it—that’s a play date buzz kill), and you’re back to square one. I finally met my first mom friend at my neighborhood moms night out, then my next at the neighborhood luau when the after-party spilled over into one of the houses nearby. My favorite way I met a mom friend was at swimming lessons when I was sitting next to a mom, and our kids were doing very awkward dolphin kicks. We were both laughing hysterically at them, and we became fast friends from there. Slowly but surely, my mom squad developed, and there is no one better to commiserate with when your baby refuses to nap or your 5-year-old won’t. stop. talking. Mom friends are essential to surviving daily life without losing your cool. My hope is that this Neighborhood Guide helps you find all the places that moms are hanging out (and more important, having fun), and you too can find your squad who you can laugh hysterically with on this wild ride we call parenting. Get out there, girl!

Farmers Branch, Carrollton and Addison area. Whether your kiddos are in the mood for outdoor adventures, up for a history lesson or need to cool off at water parks (reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s factory), these towns north of Highway 635 have you covered. “My son and I love the trail on Vitruvian Way,” says Nicole Jackson, Addison mom of one. “We take our skates or scooter and go for a stroll—it’s beautiful.” Plus, residents in this area (and nonresidents, too) can enjoy events year round. ONVENIENTLY POSITIONED IN
between Fort Worth and Dallas, Carrollton has long been a popular area to live, with shopping centers, restaurants, parks and nightlife. Mom of one Amy McCoppin lives in Carrollton and spilled on what’s kept her in the area. “The community,” she says. “The people that live here are so incredible. It’s like living in the olden days—spending time with your neighbors in the front yard, borrowing a cup of sugar and then returning it by bringing over the cupcakes you just made.” The Colony is on the rise with more and more businesses moving into the area, and residents revere it as a very safe area with fire and police departments active in the community. Castle Hills is a master-planned community within Lewisville that is packed with shopping, dining and more in the future.

More than a strip mall, Preston Royal Village now holds First Friday events.
KIDS’ AGES: 9, 6 & 5 WHERE SHE LIVES: Preston Hollow WHY SHE LOVES IT: While Preston Hollow is one of the oldest neighborhoods, nowadays, you see new beautiful, modern homes being built as well as the shops being modernized and keeping up with the evolution of [the] community’s needs. GO-TO PLACE WITH THE KIDS: Now that our kids are older, we love visiting the DMA [Dallas Museum of Art]. It’s cool inside and out, and we always discover something new and uncover interesting stories behind the art and artists. The kids even sat through a lecture once … amazing! A HIDDEN GEM PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT: This is totally new, and we look forward to the next one: First Friday at Preston Royal with shopping, food and new experiences. My kids especially love dropping by Toy Maven to check out the latest toys and activities. Driving on Strait Lane is always a treat to see all of the magnificent new and historic homes and estates. F THERE’S ONE THING we love here in Dallas, it’s dining and shopping. You can rest assured there is no shortage of shopping centers and restaurant strips in North Dallas. In this area extending from Northwest Dallas to west of U.S. Highway 75, there is an outdoor retail center at just about every corner. And while you’re sure to have no excuse to miss a birthday or Christmas gift, if you live in the area, several of these centers also boast kid-centric amenities. Whether it’s visiting Bookmarks
inside NorthPark Center or strolling through Inwood Village for afternoon frozen yogurt, North Dallas is where families thrive and play. Suzie Tsai, Preston Hollow mom of three, says her kids enjoy stopping by an old-fashioned burger shop. “Gazeebo Burgers has a back dining room with old-school arcade game machines my kids love,” she says. Parents also love this part of town because of the proximity to upstanding private schools— do The Hockaday School and The Episcopal School of Dallas ring a bell? dfwchild.com / neighborhood guide 2019

motto, but it works for other suburbs northeast of Dallas as well. While offering all the conveniences of big cities, McKinney, Allen and Fairview have managed to make residents feel like they are a bit further off the grid by creating natural play areas and trails that let families stay in touch with the outdoors. There’s access to first-rate shopping and food abounds, and don’t forget about the hiking trails, community classes and imaginative play areas. Residents of Lucas can almost forget they are a short drive from the busy Dallas-Fort Worth area, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to do. Wildlife conservation, parks and food are available in this outdoor-rich area.

in the Texas, Plano also has an accredited school system and is ranked No. 103 out of over 10,000 school districts in America—oh, and we should mention this diverse and family-oriented city is one of the best cities to buy a house in the U.S. Stacy Hillstead, Plano mom of three, loves how family-friendly the city is. If you’re looking for the best-kept secret in town, Hillstead spilled: “Our family loves both MilkyTreats Ice Cream (over-the-top toppings and ice cream options) and Wow! Donuts & Drips. They’re so great and accommodating with kids, and they get excited every time we surprise them with a trip to either.”
Wylie is a small and big town in one, with enough to do on the weekends but a closeknit community. Check out Purple Dot Fashion for a new outfit because they donate a portion of their proceeds to building an orphanage in Venezuela, where the owner’s family is from. old-school Dallas (before all the swanky restaurants and bars) with a sprinkle of newness, from the booming shops and restaurants popping up on Bishop Arts to the new restaurants along the colorful Jefferson Boulevard. Those who have called Oak Cliff home for years know it as a part of town where you can find the perfect quinceañera dresses, stop by the historic Texas Theatre for a movie or roam through Kiest Park. Parents also love the OC’s overall original personality—it’s a neighborhood for community. “We hardly have to get in our cars on the weekends to have a good time,” says Mari Hidalgo. “Everywhere you look, you see something interesting, different and thought-provoking. It’s inspiring.”

In addition to weekly story time, your kiddos will love the space at UP Library for their engaging amenities: three kiddie computers for ages 2–8 and old-school fun, too, such as puzzles, blocks and crafts. Join the library the second Saturday of every month (except December) at 2pm for Brick Bash, where kids build colorful creations out of Legos that are then displayed in the library for the rest of the month. 8383 Preston Center Plaza, Suite 200, University Park; 214/363-1644; uptexas.org
As the epitome of Dallas glam, the recently renovated Highland Park Village is home to luxury retailers from Dior to Tory Burch. After shopping till you drop, stop by Mi Cocina or Bistro 31 for lunch. Or head to Royal Blue Grocery to make your own lunch at home. Spend your evenings watching a movie at the Highland Park Village Theatre, showing current and past kid-friendly flicks. Beginning in March, you can catch the LOCAL market set up outside on the third Saturday of the month (through June). Find local goods for you and face painting for the kids. OU MIGHT NOT KNOW THIS , but Richardson is becoming a rising hub for the arts. In October of last year, the city unveiled a new sculpture on Greenville Avenue and Alma Road titled Micro Macro Majo; artist Ed Carpenter created a 70-foottall structure evocative of a large torch. In addition to this new landmark, take your kiddos on Richardson’s art walk along Highway 75 where you’ll spot various sculptures from turtles to children. Find an ArtWalk map on the city’s website, cor.net. The town is also a melting pot of cultures. “I love how culturally diverse the city of Richardson is,” says Dina Alsaid, Richardson mom of two. “Within 3 miles, you can find churches, mosques, Sikh temples, etc.”
Garland doesn’t fall far behind Richardson in family-friendly amenities. Residents in this area take advantage of shopping at the quaint Downtown Garland and getting out in nature at large parks such as the Spring Creek Forest Preserve. (Read more detais about the park below.) The city situated east of 635 is home to one-ofa-kind treasures, such as the Plaza Theater and Tin Lizard Thrifts and Antiques. (Visit makeyourmarkgarland.com for a full list of places to see and do that are unique to Garland.)
Located along Belt Line Road, this park is the center of activity in Richardson. Two lakes, two pavilions, a swimming pool, tennis courts and a sand volleyball court are some of the amenities you’ll find here. CP is also where the Cottonwood Art Festival is held. On the first weekend in May and October, the park becomes the backdrop for an art show, local bands, food and an area just for the kiddos, where they can create their own sculptures from scrap and take a turn at a potter’s wheel. On any day, check out the new Ann Eisemann Inclusive Playground, equipped with ramps and specialized surfaces. 1301 W. Belt Line Road, Richardson; 972/644-7156 cottonwoodartfestival.com; cor.net

WAY FROM THE HEART of Dallas, these neighborhoods offer families a small-town feel, plus enviable lakeside views. East of Garland and Lake Ray Hubbard, you’ll come across the quaint towns of Rockwall and Heath, and directly west of the lake, you’ll end up in Rowlett. On a nice day, spend a weekend trotting along The Harbor in Rockwall, a family favorite for residents and nonresidents alike. And on those hot Texas afternoons, cool off at Rowlett’s Wet Zone Waterpark—though we warn you, the kids might never want to leave. Whether you choose to spend a day outdoors or at your local library, these cities are ideal for lakeside living.
THE HARBOR
For quintessential lakeside views, The Harbor is a must-visit. Admire the sunset along the shore of Lake Ray Hubbard while your kiddos splash through the spray fountains nearby and play a game of “who can spot the mini lighthouse first.” There are a slew of dining options if y’all happen to get hungry while admiring the views. 2059 Summer Lee Drive, Rockwall; 972/771-7740 harborrockwall.com

Time is Money 4 PROGRAMS THAT WILL GET YOU AHEAD
The Professional Development Institute at the University of North Texas is committed to providing exemplary career certificate programs that will honor your time and money. Finding a program that’s right for you is easier than you think.
Interested in entering the world of healthcare? Enroll in PDI’s Medical Assisting course, which spans 12 weeks of training (96 classroom hours plus an 80 hour externship) and classes only meet one day per week. Gain the knowledge and practical experience required to sit for the National Healthcare Association exam for the Certified Medical Assistant profession. If you’re passionate about oral hygiene, consider the Registered Dental Assistant course, an in-person, 14-week class held on evenings and weekends. Get hands-on experience at an operating dental office, where you’ll study everything from radiology and dental impressions to temporary crowns to infection control. Interested in law? The 8-week, online Paralegal program is an excellent introduction to legal issues in Texas. You’ll learn about criminal law,
civil litigation and family law, as well as receive instruction on legal research and writing. Consider the 200-hour online Private Investigator course, which covers investigative techniques and research, preparing students to take the manager license exam.
