Kings --- HEAT
The Story of MORE THAN JUST A JERSEY BY BRETT MAURER, HEAT CREATIVE A couple of summers ago, HEAT Creative received a brief; Nike was coming in as the new league outfitter, and the first new uniform series was slated to be city-centric. Our theme was a no-brainer. Since the mid-80’s, the colors pink and blue have become culturally synonymous with Miami, and we were going to be the first professional sports team to wear them. But once you get past the aesthetic, you start thinking about Vice and what made that time special. It was the 80’s, it was electric. It turned Miami into a destination and a fantasy all in one, starting a resurgence of sorts for a city that needed it dearly at the time. And then you start thinking about HEAT Basketball, and how it all relates back to us. So we started digging. The idea of our franchise was conceived back in 1986. A slew of Vice-themed suggestions filled the “Name The Team” contest cards that year. When we opened the doors to our first game in ’88, Miami Arena lit up in these colors. Don Johnson himself introduced the HEAT Dancers before the first tipoff. Looking at that arena, the direction was clear. Our history led us to this uniform all along. On to design. “Iterate” is the name of the game. Throughout the design process, we must’ve collectively put over a hundred ideas out for critique. 80’s fashion, South Beach-inspired Art Deco, retro-digital, we brought it all. But the jersey needed to feel authentic – not just to the city or the time period we were referencing, but to the HEAT brand as well. So we pulled out our original silhouette, replaced the HEAT red and orange with laser fuchsia and blue gale, and placed the Miami Arena mark that felt so right on the front. Fast forward to tonight and we’ll be seeing the product of our work hit the hardwood. As creators, we’re always a little nervous about seeing final work in the wild, but the reception has been incredible. We’re simultaneously bringing back memories for die-hard fans, feeding the pop culture beast, and staying true to our brand all in one – and that’s how we know we’ve been successful. THE MAGIC OF THE
Pink Elephant
A MEMOIR OF THE MIAMI HEAT AND THE STYLE OF ’92.
BY ANDREW FABIAN 20
Kings --- HEAT
On a cloudless April day in ‘92,
when DayGlo colors were cool and I was too, my father ushered my brothers and I onto the Metrorail for a journey to our first HEAT game. Decked out in hand-me-down Nike Air Command Force high-tops and acid-washed denim shorts with an elastic waistband, I looked like a miniature extra from “White Men Can’t Jump.” As the train made its jarring departure, we gazed out the window at all of the Cuban barrel tile rooftops, admiring the graffiti masterpieces and pretending not to notice the scantily clad models on the passing billboards, mesmerized by the new perspective on our beloved city. Stepping off the Metro at what used to be called the Overtown/Arena station, our eyes beheld The Pink Elephant, also known as Miami Arena. Miami in the late 80’s and early 90’s was still riding the aesthetic wave captured in the media—bright convertible sports cars with pointy front bumpers, white linen blazers with thick shoulder pads, and neon signs with swirling letters like the ones denoting the arena itself. For my brothers and I, it was a sneak peek at the myth of adulthood. We were a crew of budding urbanites riding public transportation, traversing the jungle on our own two feet, ready to step into a Miami institution to witness giants in battle. My father let us hold our own tickets and hand them to the gate attendant, reinforcing the illusion of our maturity, and we made our way to the upper bowl of the arena. As they announced the starting five to thunderous applause the only name I recognized was Rony Seikaly, the first ever draft pick for the HEAT whose jersey was the most prominent on the souvenir racks. I don’t remember who won, nor do I remember any pivotal moments from the game itself. What I do remember was feeling like I belonged in the 3-0-5, like the squealing Metrorail was mine, like the city’s pastel color palette was my idea, like the heat and humidity were conditions in which I was born to thrive. The City Edition Vice jersey represents the fuzzy nostalgia of my first HEAT game, capturing the essence of The Pink Elephant and everything that was once cool, reminding me to proudly affirm the magic of my youth and the magic of my city.

RE-HEAT
MIAMI HEAT DELIVER FOOD TO CHAPMAN PARTNERSHIP On Sunday, January 14th, HEAT Legend Glen Rice joined the HEAT Dancers, Burnie and representatives from Florida Blue and Levy Cares to visit the Chapman Partnership facility and deliver food and serve meals to its 500+ residents. This is the 10th year of the Re-HEAT Program in which unserved food from all Miami HEAT home games is redistributed to local homeless assistance programs. Through the assistance of presenting partner Florida Blue, alongside supporting partner Levy Cares, over 44,000 pounds of food have been distributed to Re-HEAT beneficiaries, the Miami Rescue Mission and Chapman Partnership.
