UNBUILD THE BUILT ENGINEERING THE INTERIOR

Focus of the studio

The studio attempts to interiorize the selected context and activity program based on the process that the studio will develop to extract the unbuilt of the built.

The studio develops a relationship between the emerging technological advancements and new societal requirements that concern interior design practices and profession.

The studio will enable students to materialize the interior from the extraction of the built.

The studio will enable the ability to develop an individual design position through three-dimensional material based outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Ability to position the process developed to make the studio outcome compete with the practices.

Develop the ability to systematically factorise the interior program

Ability to draw, represent and capture the qualities of the unbuilt through other graphic and artistic mediums and techniques and processes

Ability to explore combinations of drawings, models and prototypes to express and concretize their process

Ability to represent the final outcome in comparison to presently practice presentation techniques for interior design field

Studio Process

Disassembly of an architectural environment leaves us with the components of its tangible and intangible aspects. ‘The tangible’ signifies the purpose of a designed environment but ‘the intangible signifies its spirit. Interior environments housed within the architectural shell are an outcome of the functions it inhabits and is articulated by the characteristics of its spatial qualities.

‘If the unit is a composition within itself, the multiplier is the algorithm that leads to a pattern. The end product is the extended run of the algorithm.’- Cecil Balmond

Similarly, an interior environment is a ‘whole’ composed within its architectural shell. The extracted is covert to the linkages of the envelope. The tectonic aspects of an interior environment provide clues to access the experience of the space each with a measure of its own.

‘Heart’ is considered to be the organ that signifies life in a human body. The body cannot function without a heart. But the same heart when transported for the purpose of transplantation can survive in an environment that is artificial to the human body. The studio attempts to capture this artificially intelligent environment that when extracted from the built can devoid it of its life.

The studio will enable students to examine interior environments and extract the experience of the spatial system such that it creates a new form of expression.

The studio will enable students to examine the built and extract the unbuilt such that it can be taken to a higher level of performance through attributes of interior design principles and rulemaking. The studio process will focus on providing stability to the extracted unbuilt such that it becomes a system by itself. The studio identifies methods for programming the extracted of the built and conceptualise the program for this process. It investigates the qualities of extraction from a built which is generally informed as a site attribute.

To evaluate the extracted unbuilt, the studio is conceptualised in 3 stages:

01: Identifying Experiences
02: Deriving Kit of Design Elements (KODE) + Bank of Experiences (BOE)
03: Engineering the interior environment

Exploring concepts of built & unbuilt by comprehending and identifying the impact of the interior spatiality in interior built environments from interior design practices

Generating a kit of design elements and bank of experiences based on the extractions from Module 01

Develop a design project for one of the following design issue

Crafts through scarcity or abundance

Fabrication through decoration or ornamentation

Advanced Technology through minimization or maximmization

Site: 18m x 15m x 9m

From Module 01 & 02 develop a design process addressing the chosen design issue and derive an interior system through kit of design elements (KODE) and bank of experiences (BOE) for

High-end spa with a spa space (for 4 people), High-end store (indo-foreigner store), and High-end gallery space

Expressing Experiences

Stage 02

Exercise Brief & Attempt:

This exercise was to select any one of the previously identified experiences, and select 6 more examples of interior design projects that express the same experience. Two examples based on site, two based on program and two based on tectonic systems had to be identified. These examples were to be studied fiurther to extract their characteristics based on visual, physical and mechanical properties of the space that contributes to the experiemce of the space.

Learning Outcomes:

Identifying a spatial experience in different programs, understanding the context, construction system, principles of the projects that contribute to enhance the overall selected spatial experience.

Extracting the Characteristics from Experiences

Stage 03

Exercise Brief & Attempt:

The projects from the previous examples were studies further to extract their characteritics in order to extract the final outcome, i.e. the desired experience. These characteristics were depicted with the help of physical abstract models showcasing major characters of one selected project.

Learning Outcomes:

Ability of abstraction and articulation of experiences to transform into a physical characteristics, creating an emphasis on the process of experiential space making.

Introduction of Design Issue

Stage 04

Exercise Brief & Attempt:

This exercise dealt with a generation of a Design Issue to take the process of interior design experience further. The Design Issue that chosen was Advance Technology with Maximisation. Furthermore, Digital fabrication and Additive Manufacturing was chosen to achieve the desired outcome.

Learning Outcomes:

Ability to process the formula of form making using a technological advancement. The concept of maximisation as a feature and how it can affect the project, was understood.

Kit of Design Elements | KODE

Exercise Brief & Attempt:

The intent of this exercise us to address the chosen Design Issue with respect to the Process of the Studio and generate a Kit of Design Elements that has to be a part of the final outcome. Some exgamples were identified that follow the same design issue and an intention towards creating experience. The elements need to be an extract of the previously done exercises to develop a new set of Design Elements.

Learning Outcomes:

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

Bank of Experiences | BOE

Exercise Brief & Attempt:

The exercise intends to analyse and compose abstract experiential illustrations that are extracted out of the case studies and design development processes. The reflections of this bank of experiences will be seen in the project.

Learning Outcomes:

Abilty to achieve a number of experiences to improve the quality of the design. Ability to direct the design process in order to the process following the inputs and extractions done.

Engineering the Interior

Exercise Brief & Attempt:

The exercise was to design interior for a volume of 18m x 15m x 9m , considering the interior to be free of the architecture. The outcome is a result of the process from identifying the experience to extracting and using the technology to engineer the interior. The program consists of three subprograms- a High-end Gallery, a High-end Spa, a High-end Retail store in the same space.

Learning Outcomes:

Ability

come to a conclusion altogether with the help of the process of engineering the interior.

helped in achieving the ability to understand the relationship between interior elements and smartly playing with its ability to create experience.
