History of The Joffrey Ballet

Robert Joffre y and Gerald Arpinos uniquel y American vision of dance first took fonn in 1956. The original compan y consisted of six dynami c and highly individual d ancers. Whil e Joffrey staye d in New York to teach ball et classes and earn money to pay the danc ers ' sa laries , Arpino led the troupe as the y crossed the American heartland (every night a different venue) in a station wagon They wou ld unload th e car, rosin the stage, set the lights, iron the costumes and prepare for the evening 's performance Yet what reall y set them apart was their repertoire of original ballets b y Joffrey

The J offre y Ballet became the fir s t American company to tour the fonn er Soviet Union and the firs t dance compan y to perfonn at the White Hous e. Joffrey and Arpino set trends by commissionin g early and new ballets from Alvin Ailey, Laura Dean , Jiri Kylian, Mark Morri s and Twyla Tharp, to name only a few. The company be ca me known for its reconstructions of "lost " wo rks from the ea rl y 20th century, primarily Diaghile vs les Ballets Russ es . The company's repertoire spans the gamut of 20th-cen tur y choreography, from the cubist style to p re - and post-World Wa r I Paris, to the Ame ricana of the old West (DeMille 's Rodeo and loring 's Billy the Kid ), to the co unterculture freedom of the '60s (Arpino 's Trinity, Th e Clowns and Sacred Grove on Mount Tamalpais , and Joffreys Astarte) to th e MTV gene ration (B illb oards, with mu sic b y Prin ce.)

Gerald Arpino, founder and artistic director

Gerald Arpino was born in Staten Island , New York. H e co - founded The Joffrey Ballet with Robert Joffrey in 1956 and se rve d as associate direc tor. Upon Joffre y's d ea th in 1988, Arpino succeeded him as artistic director. A leading dan cer with the company in its early yea rs, Arpino choreo graphed his first work, Rop es, in 1961. Shortly thereaft er, h e b eca me the company's resident choreographer. To date, he ha s created more than one-third of the company's repertoire. His ball e ts are in the rep ertoires of companies around the world. Arpino is th e

In 1993, h e produc ed Americas first full -evening rock ballet , Billboards , se t to the mu sic of Prince. Arpino has received numerou s awards and honors over hi s long and pre st igiou s career. In 1995, h e move d the Joffre y Ballet to Chicago.

In 1956 , he found e d th e Joffrey Ballet-an ensemble of American dancers for whom he choreographed, taught, commissioned original balle ts and reconstructed rare classics. In the process, he built what is now acknowledged as one of the major international dan ce companies. Joffrey was a mast er teacher and a resp ected authOrity on dance He wa s sought after worldwide as an adjudicator for fe s tiva ls and competitions His legacy lives on not only in his company, but also in the n e tw ork of ballet w orkshops he crea te d across the country In 2000 , Robert Joffrey was inducted into the N ational Dance Museum.

He became a member of the last Coltrane band , liberating from th e saxopl10ne not only sounds fundamental to the jazz tradition , but also timbres and voices from traditional African and Third World music. When Coltrane died in 1967, Sanders began leading groups that reflected what he and Coltrane sought to accomplish , p u shing the limits of what was then imagined as jazz sound. Sanders drew from the pentatonic underpinnings common to African and Asian music to provide chant materials with pulsating rhythms. Combining the Are of the blues with the passion of the Afro-American church , Sanders' music achieved the intensity long referred to as "sanc ti fied " by feUow musicians. In concert and on h is recordings , Sanders has lifted t he hearts of his listeners in the way the great gospel singers are famous for. A Grammy Award winner, Sanders has toured extensively throu ghout Europe, South America and West Africa.

Curriculum Enhancements

Michigan Opera Theatre wishes to thank Karen R. Todorov for creating a curriculum-writing team to produce educational materials on Margaret § Garner, the Underground Railroad and the role of abolitionists in Michigan before and during the Civil War.

These materials focus on core va lues, as stated by the social studies deptartment of the Michigan State Department of Education.

New curriculum material will be posted on our MOT web site starting in February We hope this exciting new way of presenting information will interest schools, colleges and all ages and types of learners.

Teaching materials are prepared for all of our school programs and are mailed to each school in advance of our performance. Some of these materials are written for the teachers' edification, but we also prepare grade appropriate materials for the students to use before and after the performance. All students are encouraged to write a critique of their experience

Easy to Book or Sponsor

Dolores Tobis , Department of Community Programs Marketing Manager, can help with suggestions about how to pay for our touring presentations. Would you like to sponsor a program for your favorite youngster or for a school that cannot afford our services' Contact Dolores! II

You can give young people the joy of live performance , learning and OPERA! I Contact her at (313) 2373429 or dtobis@motopera.org.

Detroit Opera House

Repertoire

The staff of Community Programs carefully discuss what it presents each year. When teachers return evaluation forms , they sometimes request topics that they would like to see addressed. Timely subjects are explored and new works by composers and librettists are examined. On occasion, new works are commissioned or created by the d epartment.

The department tries to present a different concept each year, so that students always learn something new and different. .

Volunteers

Michigan Opera Theatre and the Detroit Opera House present one of the finest and most diverse opera and dance soies in the country The theatrical experiences encompass vocal and orchestral music , dance, drama, costumes, sets and lighting. The achievement of this multiplicity requires many voices and many willing hands. The talented , giving hands of our Opera League, Ushers , Dance Council, Encore I , Ambassadors, Office and Boutique workers, Movers, Supers, Volunteer Education and AdagiO volunteers have a significant impact on the overall operation of the company

This wmX, which had its premiere in spring of 1996, was innnediately hailed by audiences and critics alike as a fitting tribute to the wartime efforts of the Tuskegee Allmon. The Tuskegee Airmen were African-Americans who received their flight training .It an airbase in Alabama as preparation for their service to their country in time of war Although these men met hardslrips and obs1llcles placed in their paths by a IIl¢ist mili1llry syatem, the "Red Tails", their niclmame, distinguished themselves with honor in WWIT Sir Warren has crafted a wolk that follows the men from their early trsining to the time they become airborne, never 1iterally, but ahnost impressionistically Along the way, he shows us the intense camaraderie that developed as these men faced enemies on two fronts - at home and overseas. Using gestures of saluting, pointing to the skies and pledging their hearts, Sir Warren, neatly sums up the tremendous dedication, patriotism and accomplishment of African Americans who were wiDing to mai<e the supreme sacrifice to their country

World Premiere 1999 - Dayton, Ohio

Set to thC vibrant rhythms of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, it follows a party of decadent lost souls that are haunted and later rescued by spirits that =onnecl them to their ancient and l\IlCOStrlIl character. I. Dark Mansion
