I’m feeling somewhat better now-adays; at least I’m getting out among my friends and clients once in awhile. For those of you that don’t understand that I was in a serious motorcycle accident on January 17th 2012, and was in pretty bad shape for awhile. But thanks for the many prayers and well wishes I’m continuing to heal. I now ask everyone to send those prayers and good wishes to my best friend and assistant Tamii Schrum, Tamii has the fight of her life going on now fighting a serious sickness, Thank you for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers. I will keep everyone updated on Tamii’s journey. Now let me respond to the few people that called, texted and emailed me about my editorial last month. I’m not trying put bars and rooms out of business, I’m trying to enlighten them to take stock in what and how they are promoting pool and darts in their places of business, you may not be old enough to remember that pool and darts at one time was the bread and butter of their business. I only ask that they (Mr. Mrs. or Ms.) to look at how pool and darts fit into or business now, look at how many leagues, teams and players you support, look at your equipment, what shape are your dart boards, guest darts, playing area in? Do you know, or until now

cared? Same thing about pool, look at the pool tables, the lighting, the cloth, balls, cues, pockets, are the tables level? Do you care what the players or your guest have to play with? People don’t have to come into your bar or rooms just to be insulted by the conditions the sports equipment. Used to be the player was a first class customer, what now? With economy the way it is and other options players (customers) won’t put up with insults to their sports. They are finding other places to play, and not just another bar or room. Some bars have accused me of not promoting pool and darts like I used to so they have pulled ads from my paper, so I’ve asked them what are you promoting and where? They are kind of stunned when they hear their own answer. It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out. Darts and pool will never go away; they will just find other places to play. Change with the times or the times will change what you do for a living. You can’t live in yesterday world; you must change with the times! Could your bar or room become a social club? Could booze just be another means of making money in a bar, but not the main source of income? Think about it and how to promote our sports and your bar or room. I’ve been your friend and partner in the bar, pool and dart business for almost 25 years now why would fight against you now? Please support your rooms and bars through this long hot summer, have your birthday’s parties, events and other functions at your favorite bar or room, if ever your favorite place needs you NOW IS THE TIME. THE ONLY THING THAT CONSISTENT IS CHANGE!

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING DARTS

The game of darts is a popular indoor sport. Long hours are spent practicing, for some, it becomes a much-loved hobby. Serious dart throwers join tournaments where they can win hundreds of dollars. Many different materials are used to make darts. The most commonly used material is brass. The quality of a dart directly affects how well it will perform. A dense dart will fly straighter and thus be more accurate. Types of Darts: • Brass darts • Nickel/Silver darts • Tungsten darts

Brass Darts Brass darts are very affordable. It is a heavy material that is easily machined and is inexpensive. This is why these darts are commonly used as “house darts.” The only drawback is that brass is very soft. It is so soft the grip is likely to wear down quickly. Once the grip has worn down it changes how well the dart performs.

12410 N. 28th Dr.

W. of I-17 just N. of Cactus

Nickel/Silver Darts Nickel is also a heavy or dense metal that is easy to machine and is also affordable. Nickel is much harder than brass and will last through many throws before showing any wear and tear. It must be known that there is no actual silver in these darts; the manufacturers use a nickel/tin alloy, instead. Tungsten Darts These are the darts the professionals use. Tungsten darts are extremely dense with small diameter barrels. This “small diameter” means a better feel and a much improved performance. A small diameter also means a tighter grouping on the dart board, resulting in higher scores. The higher the tungsten density, the higher the quality will be. Below is an example of the price differences: • • • •

50% to 70% - $15 - $40 80% Tungsten - $25 - $60 90% upwards of a $100 95% to 98% upwards of $200

Tungsten can also be manufactured

with copper. However, copper produces a softer, less durable dart. For those who play in tournaments, the dart makes all the difference. Each person should have a set of 3 darts. It is not recommended to share darts as this slows the game, significantly.

Shafts Shafts are important, as well. These may be plastic, aluminum or composite. Plastic is inexpensive but will not last very long. Composite shafts have plastic threads, combined with aluminum or other alloys. These are very durable darts. Solid aluminum is more durable than plastic or composite. The only drawback to aluminum is that aluminum shafts are known to vibrate loose. Flights Flights are the small little wings on the end of the dart. These can be hard, nylon or soft wings. The dimplex or ribtex wings are hard flights that have been embosses with a texture. Flights do not generate lift

but only serve to stabilize the dart while in motion. The top five tips for purchasing darts are as follows. • Choose a dart that meets your specific needs • Decide how much you want to spend • Shop around for the best price • Choose a shaft that is durable • Decide which flights fit your needs and your budget With a little research, you will be able to purchase darts, confidently. If you play occasionally, a lessexpensive dart will be best. If you play in tournaments, it is best to purchase a better dart to achieve the best results. When it comes to tips, soft tip darts are used when playing an electronic dart game. Steel tips are for use on a dart board. Darts is a fun activity for the entire family. For those who are serious about the game, a well-made, high-quality dart will make all the difference between winning and losing.

Leesa & Tim. No, they are not the writers of this article! They are the ones cheering! As they are the new owners of CHEERS TAVERN located at 5915 W. Bell Rd. (S/W corner of 59th Ave & Bell) I caught up with Leesa & Tim on the first day they opened the doors, and BOY was I shocked and surprised at the changes and how wonderfully clean their place is. Tim & Leesa explained how they gutted the place and started over. “The placement of everything in this bar was thought out and planned Leesa stated, our goal from the beginning was to set this place up to flow and to have a décor like no other bar around us and I think we accomplished that. We wanted an open and homey kind of feel”, explained Leesa, “We want our guest to feel welcome and comfortable - that’s why we chose the light-colored woods and industrial materials (which I love), instead of the same old dark woods and colors that are so common of the older bars. We truly enjoy people, and want them to have a great time!”

WE KNOW from experience that the key to providing top level Auto Restoration services is an intense focus on what the customer's needs are. These are our beliefs and core values. in-house league, while Tim’s been playing darts for 20+ years and runs an in-house dart tournament every Sunday at 4pm. At present Cheers Tavern is looking for dart players for the Sunday’s in-house tournament as well as some Medalist Dart Teams. They also have plenty of big flat screen TV’s.- Thirteen 51” HD Plasma’s to be exact, and get this, an 80” LED to watch all your favorite sports on. I love how open and spacious everything is. Food and drink prices are very reasonable. I also noticed music videos playing which is something you don’t see everyday in your neighborhood bar, they have Karaoke on Friday & Saturday nights but I’m told they have some kind of special every night. Oh did I mention it has been totally remodeled and how clean everything is, hahaha, yes I guess I did a time or two.

Leesa has been in the bar business for 25+ years and knows how to treat her guests. Leesa takes care of the bar side of the business, while Tim takes care of the kitchen and also the entertainment/marketing side of the business. Tim states, “I can’t think of anybody I’d rather run a bar with than my wife Leesa., she’s no doubt knows this business inside and out, and she’s the best damn bartender I’ve ever seen, and not just because she’s my wife, ask anybody who she’s ever served, she’s an old school bartender and she’s has some pretty high standards when it comes to hiring staff - like Rhonda our day manager. Leesa trained Rhonda 10 years ago and Rhonda is one of the best bartenders around. I think we have hired a great customer oriented staff. Our goal is simple, to provide exceptional service with a smile and My prediction is Cheers Tavern will to be a great little neighborhood bar become one of the hot spots on Bell where our guest can go for a fun, Rd and of Glendale for that matter. safe and relaxing night out.” I base my prediction on Leesa and I really like the way the dart and Tim’s philosophy, “There is a bar on pool area has its own separate almost every corner, but we want spaces. Leesa is looking forward to Cheers to be the first one that pops hosting traveling pool teams and an in your mind to hang with friends,

have a blast, and get your fill of great food and drinks” Leesa and Tim want to know what you would like to see at Cheers Tavern, they respect your opinions and suggestions, and frequently ask customers about their input, which is very refreshing! The Cheers motto “It’s not the bar, but the people” kind of says it all. If you haven’t seen the new Cheers Tavern yet, hurry on down, its well worth the drive from any distance, they turned the old Cheers Sports Lounge into something everyone will CHEER about. Go Check out Cheers Tavern, you will love it!

BCA HONORS ROGER BLANK Schaumburg, IL.- July 17, 2012 - Each year the Chairman of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Board of Directors has the opportunity to recognize an outstanding individual who has made significant contributions to the billiard industry with the presentation of the BCA President’s Award.

year’s award recipient is honest, passionate and always exceeds expectations. His commitment to the industry is what separates him from others, and his versatility provides him the ability to the see the bigger picture and not only help develop the growth and success of his customers but also the entire industry.”

This year, BCA Chairman Mike Serra has chosen to recognize Roger Blank as the recipient of the 2011 BCA President’s Award. An industry veteran of 17 years, Roger is currently Director of National & Commercial Accounts for Brunswick Billiards. Twice elected to serve on the BCA Board of Directors, Roger has also served on numerous BCA committees, including participating on the Trade Show Committee seven times since 2001 (three years as chair), Long Range Planning, Finance, Instructors, Hall of Fame, Nominating and By-Laws Committees. He has also served three years on the BCA Executive Committee, two of those as first vice-president of the BCA Board.

Other industry leaders agree with Serra’s assessment of Roger’s dedication to the industry. “As I was finishing my last year as BCA Chairman, I needed a reliable and committed person to take the daunting task of Trade Show Committee Chair. Without hesitation I knew Roger was my guy. I was fortunate enough to work along side Roger at the BCA and watched him bloom into a diligent, selfless, hard worker that not only took on every challenge he was given, but always did it with a positive attitude and smile. Even after Roger’s career as a BCA director, he continues to volunteer his time and expertise to help the BCA and the billiard industry in every way he can,” says Skip Nemecek, Tweeten Fibre President, and former BCA Chairman.

“In choosing this year’s President’s award recipient, I wanted to choose someone whose work ethic mirrored the vision and mission statements of the Billiard Congress of America,” Chairman Serra stated. “Roger’s dedication to growing the billiard industry and to supporting industry members is unparalleled by anyone in a similar position.” Chairman Serra added, “This

“Roger’s loyalty to billiards is evident in the many connections and relationships he has made across manufacturers and retailers. He has always been extremely passionate about the billiards industry, and prides himself on serving the BCA in any capacity,”said Austin Rothbard, President at Brunswick Billiards.

GIVE BACK TO WHATEVER YOU LOVE

I think the hardest thing in the world is to get a large group of people together and try to get them to all agree on anything. Different opinions are what make up a democracy, but to get any kind of agreement most of the individuals involved must be headed in the same direction. Over the past week I have been trying to do just such an activity. If the thing you are working on as a group is for the good of the whole then you are going to have to make some exceptions to the normal rule of business you use. I have always been in the habit of helping new people in the great sport of billiards, as much as I am qualified to. I am no expert. If I were I would be on the road making money. I have a skill level that is such that I can help new people come along with their game and build an interest in the sport.

started a new tournament 2 years ago to showcase the talents of our local players and to strengthen the resolve of those players to not only stay in the game but bring their friends into it also.

I am a league operator and I am always looking for new players who wish to develop their skills and enjoy what they are doing. I have been known to help players on an opposing team from time to time and I do enjoy seeing someone who is really interested in getting better. We (league operators) have a wealth of talent in this city and we need to expand the pool as much as we are able. To this end I

Sometime we have to let go of the mercenary side of life and just do what feels good.

I have had a good response from the other directors in this area with their support and I really want to thank them for their help. This tournament is not for me. I have my game and I work on developing it all the time. This event is for the players who come out each week and play for the leagues. There are no ulterior motives here. I just wish to give these athletes a place to showcase their skills and to help our great sport grow. I have a love of the sport because, to me, it is relaxing and I get a special feeling when I have done something to help someone who really is interested in getting better. There is no better way to improve at something than to challenge yourself. If more people had the same commitment to making things better, this would be so much better a place to live.

We all need to make a living but sometimes that has to come second. My best wishes to you and yours. Your Tennessee Country Boy Chuck Webb
