Voorwoord Het bestuur van de stichting Eerbetoon Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial heet u van harte welkom bij het 16e Liberation Concert op de Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Margraten. Een editie die door middel van een livestream door meer dan 135.000 mensen, in meer dan 100 landen wordt bekeken. Samen met u gaan zij genieten van de mooie klanken van de philharmonie zuidnederland. Klanken die dit jaar in het teken staan van een ‘hommage’ aan hen die 77 jaar geleden hun leven gaven voor onze vrijheid. De graven om ons heen vertellen elk een verhaal van mannen en vrouwen die hun leven gaven in de strijd tegen de tirannie. We mogen nooit vergeten hoe dit zorgeloze leven van duizenden bevrijders in de strijd voor onze vrijheid ten einde kwam. Het Liberation Concert eert hun opofferingsgezindheid en toewijding voor de bevrijding van een volk dat ze niet eens kenden. Wij zijn hen daar, vanuit de grond van ons hart, eeuwig dankbaar voor. Om dit gemeenschappelijk gedragen eergevoel kracht bij te zetten hebben we samen met de philharmonie zuidnederland en componist Mark Pütz het idee opgevat om het Liberation
Concert blijvend te verbinden aan de Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Margraten. Een plek die een belangrijke plaats binnen onze gemeenschap vormt. De speciaal hiervoor geschreven hymne ‘Unknown territory’ die door Pütz is gecomponeerd gaat vandaag voor u en onze gasten van over de hele wereld in première. Een waar hoogtepunt in de 16-jarige geschiedenis van het concert. Met deze hymne willen we ook het werk van de American Battle and Monuments Commission (ABMC) eren. Zij die dag in, dag uit met zo veel liefde en toewijding de 17 begraafplaatsen over de hele wereld tot in de puntjes verzorgen.

Foreword The board of the Liberation Concert and the American Battle Monuments Commission welcomes you to the 16th edition of the Liberation concert here at the Netherlands American cemetery in Margraten. An edition which will be viewed via livestream in more than 100 countries. Together with you, they will enjoy the beautiful sounds of the philharmonie zuidnederland. Music to pay ‘hommage’ to the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom nearly 80 years ago. The surrounding graves are the physical reminder of the men and women who gave everything in the battle against tyranny. We will never forget how the lives of thousands so suddenly ended in the struggle for freedom nor the loss felt by their families. The Liberation Concert honors their sacrifice and dedication to a people they didn’t even know. We are, from the bottom of our hearts, eternally grateful. To reinforce this common feeling the board, together with the philharmonic and composer Mark Pütz, will permanently link the Liberation Concert to the cemetery in Margraten. A place which forms such an important part of our community here in South-Limburg and the rest of the Netherlands. A hymn, titled ‘Unknown territory’, written for and dedicated to the Netherlands American Cemetery will be played for the first time for you and for all viewers from all over the world. A true highlight in the history of the Liberation Concert.
With this hymn we also honor the work of the men and women of the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). They strive daily to honor the service and sacrifice in 26 cemeteries worldwide, maintaining these iconic resting places to an immaculate standard.

Blijven herdenken 12 september is een historische datum in onze gemeente. Dit is de dag waarop de bevrijding van Nederland in 1944 in Mesch startte. Jaarlijks herdenken wij deze gebeurtenis op verschillende momenten en manieren. Ook met het Liberation Concert dat dit jaar alweer voor de 16de keer plaatsvindt. Zeker in deze tijd waarin niks meer vanzelfsprekend is blijf herdenken en vieren belangrijk in onze gemeente. Ook 77 jaar na onze bevrijding.
De Amerikaanse Begraafplaats en het toekomstige Visitor Centre herinneren ons aan de bevrijders. De muziek die vandaag over de Amerikaanse Begraafplaats klinkt is ook een blijvende herinnering. Bedankt dat u vandaag aanwezig bent bij dit muzikaal eerbetoon. Laten we ook in de toekomst blijven herdenken. Alleen, maar ook met elkaar. Dan blijft onze gemeenschap verbonden door vrede en vrijheid.
De vrede waarin wij leven is ons gegeven door soldaten die vochten voor de vrijheid die ieder mens verdient. In Nederland kwamen de bevrijders als eerste in onze gemeente de grens over. Zij hebben hier hun leven gegeven en zijn hier begraven. Adoptanten, inwoners, ondernemers, verenigingen en stichtingen van EijsdenMargraten zijn sterk verbonden met deze soldaten. De vrede en vrijheid die zij ons gegeven hebben laat onze samenleving bloeien. Daarom hebben zij nog altijd en voor altijd een bijzondere plaats in ons hart en in de gemeenschap van EijsdenMargraten.

Continuing to Commemorate September 12, 1944 represents a historic date for our municipality, as it is the day the liberation of the Netherlands began in Mesch. We commemorate this event annually at different times and in different ways, one of which is the Liberation Concert. Commemoration and celebration continue to be important for our municipality. Especially at this time – 77 years after our liberation – that once again shows us that we cannot take anything for granted. The peacetime we live in was given to us by soldiers who fought for the freedom that every human being deserves. Our municipality was the first place the liberators entered as they crossed into the Netherlands. They gave their lives and were buried here. Eijsden-Margraten’s adopters, residents, businesses, associations and foundations all have a strong tie to these soldiers. The peace and freedom they brought us has enabled our society to flourish. That’s why they still, and will always, have a special place in our hearts and in Eijsden-Margraten’s community. The American Cemetery and the future Visitor Center are reminders of those who liberated us. The music that will resonate throughout the American Cemetery today is also a lasting reminder. Thank you for joining us today for this musical tribute. Let us continue to remember into the future: alone, but also together. That way our community will remain united by peace and freedom.

Welkom! Namens de American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) heet ik u van harte welkom bij het jaarlijkse Liberation Concert op de Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Margraten. Dit jaar vieren we de 77e gedenkdag van de bevrijding van Zuid-Limburg, de eerste stappen in de bevrijding van heel Nederland. Dit jaar als laatste, en meer dan ooit tevoren sinds het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn we verenigd in de strijd om de coronapandemie te overkomen. Deze strijd heeft vele levens geëist, jong en oud. Leverde spanningen op binnen families. En heeft impact gehad op ons dagelijks leven. Ondanks alles hebben wij hierin volhard. Net zoals we 77 jaar geleden samen gestreden hebben tegen een gezamenlijke vijand, doen we dat nu ook als bondgenoten met één gemeenschappelijk doel. We zijn dankbaar hier vandaag te mogen zijn om te luisteren naar de mooie klanken van de philharmonie zuidnederland. Ik weet zeker dat deze muziek ons de
nodige kracht en energie zal geven om samen door te zetten. Het is de missie van de American Battle Monuments Commission om de dienst, prestaties en opoffering van de gesneuvelde jonge mannen en vrouwen te eren. Zij die huis en haard achter zich lieten om de vrijheid van mensen in alle hoeken van de wereld te verdedigen. Wij herdenken de opoffering die deze generatie gaf in de strijd tegen de tirannie, onze organisatie is dan ook veel meer een ‘vertegenwoordiging’ van een publieke herinnering. Daar hoort ook het onderhoud van de begraafplaatsen en monumenten bij maar bovenal ook het overdragen van de verhalen van deze mannen en vrouwen, zonen en dochters aan volgende generaties. Dat doen we elke dag op onze begraaf- en gedenkplaatsen in 17 landen. Het is onze verantwoordelijkheid en eer om deze geschiedenis te preserveren voor toekomstige generaties opdat zij de ‘kosten’ van de vrijheid nooit zullen vergeten.

On behalf of the American Battle Monuments Commission, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the Netherlands American Cemetery and the annual Liberation Day Concert. This year celebrates the 77th Anniversary of the liberation of South Limburg and the first steps to liberating the Netherlands. This year as last and more than any time since the end of WWII, we are united in our struggle and efforts to emerge from a global pandemic. It has taken many, many lives, young and old, strained families, and impacts us all on a daily basis. Yet, we persist, and just as we linked arms 77 years ago to defeat that enemy, so too today, we continue to work together as allies in this cause. Today, we’re grateful to receive this music from the South Netherlands Philharmonic and know that it heals and lifts our spirits! It is the sacred duty of the American Battle Monuments Commission to honor the courage and selflessness of those young men and women who left the comforts of home to help defend freedom and restore liberty of people in all corners of the globe. Remembering the sacrifice of those who gave all in the struggle against tyranny, our Commission is an agency of public memory, not only preserving and maintaining these remarkable sites but telling the individual stories of these men and women, sons and daughters. Herdenken en vieren Het is al eerder gezegd en geschreven, maar we kunnen er niet vaak genoeg bij stilstaan: vrijheid is niet vanzelf sprekend. De gebeurtenissen op het wereldtoneel van de afgelopen maanden hebben dat helaas weer eens aangetoond. Ook de lessen uit de geschiedenis - zeker die van de Tweede Wereldoorlog - hebben geleerd hoe belangrijk die vrijheid is. Bij mijn aantreden als gouverneur in Limburg in april van dit jaar heb ik met tevredenheid kunnen vaststellen dat herdenken en eren ook in deze provincie een belangrijke rol speelt. De mooie wijze waarop in de hele provincie ‘75 jaar bevrijding van Limburg’ is herdacht en gevierd, is daar een goed voorbeeld van. en ander goed voorbeeld is het Liberation Concert dat dit jaar voor de 16e keer op de Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Margraten plaatsvindt. Een bijzonder initiatief op een bijzondere plek om te herdenken en om andermaal onze verbondenheid en gemeenschappelijke waarden te onderstrepen.
Op 30 mei mocht ik op deze plek een toespraak houden tijdens Memorial Day, de jaarlijkse herdenking van de Amerikaanse gesneuvelden. Ik was hier toen voor het eerst. Nog altijd ben ik onder de indruk van deze laatste rustplaats en van het gegeven dat elk graf van een gesneuvelde man of vrouw is geadopteerd. Het raakte me ook dat nu, driekwart eeuw later, er nog altijd een wachtlijst is van mensen die een graf willen adopteren. Op deze begraafplaats dringt tot je door wat jonge mensen, die dit land niet eens kenden, hebben opgeofferd voor onze vrijheid. Het grote respect en de dankbaarheid hiervoor zijn ook de pijlers onder het Liberation Concert. Dat het concert juist op deze plek plaatsvindt, onderstreept hoezeer herdenken en vieren bij elkaar horen. We mogen luisteren en genieten van de muziek van onze philharmonie zuidnederland in het besef dat duizenden jonge mensen hun leven hebben gegeven. Het thema ‘Hommage’ van dit Liberation Concert had niet treffender gekozen kunnen worden.

Remembrance and celebration Ik begon dit voorwoord met de stelling dat vrijheid niet vanzelfsprekend is. Laten we daarom ook in de toekomst blijven stilstaan bij degenen die voor die vrijheid hebben gezorgd. Laten we die vrijheid koesteren, bewaken en vieren. Het Liberation Concert levert daar een grote bijdrage aan. Ik hoop en verwacht dat dat tot in lengte van jaren zo blijft. Omdat vrijheid niet vanzelfsprekend is. LATEN WE OOK IN DE TOEKOMST BLIJVEN STILSTAAN BIJ DEGENEN DIE VOOR DIE VRIJHEID HEBBEN GEZORGD
It has been said and written before, but we cannot remind ourselves often enough: freedom should never be taken for granted. Recent events on the world stage have once again made this clear, unfortunately. The lessons of history – and certainly those of the Second World War – have also taught us how important freedom is. When I became the King’s Commissioner for the Province of Limburg in April, I was pleased to see how much importance this province attaches to remembering and honoring the past. The splendid way in which all of Limburg celebrated the 75th anniversary of its liberation is a good example. Another fine example is the Liberation Concert, which will take place this year for the sixteenth time at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten. It is a very special occasion, held in an extraordinary place to remember and once again highlight our fellowship and our shared values. I had the honor of speaking here on May 30th during the ceremony marking Memorial Day, commemorating the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It was the first time I had visited the cemetery. I was and remain deeply impressed by this final resting place and by the fact that each one of the graves has been adopted. It also moved me to see that even now, three-quarters of a century later, there is still a waiting list of people who would like to adopt a grave. Visiting this

cemetery makes you aware of what these young men and women – most of them unfamiliar with the Netherlands – sacrificed for our freedom. The Liberation Concert grew out of deep respect and gratitude for their sacrifice. Holding the concert in this place emphasizes how closely intertwined remembrance and celebration are. We will listen to and enjoy the music of Philharmonie Zuidnederland knowing that thousands of young men and women laid down their lives. The theme of this year’s
Concert, ‘Homage’, could not be more appropriate. Let us continue to remember those who liberated us. Let us cherish, safeguard and celebrate freedom. The Liberation Concert certainly helps us to do so, and I hope and expect that it will for many years to come. Because freedom should never be taken for granted. Hommage Het Memorial Concert Margraten 2021 draagt als thema Hommage en borduurt in de programmakeuze voort op de succesvolle editie van 2020. Nooit mogen we vergeten hoe het zorgeloze leven van duizenden jonge mannen en vrouwen in de strijd voor onze vrijheid ten einde kwam. Dit programma eert hun opofferingsgezindheid en toewijding voor de bevrijding van een volk dat ze niet kenden. Tijdens het Liberation Concert beleeft de door Mark Pütz gecomponeerde hymne ‘Unknown Territory’ voor het nieuw te bouwen Visitor Centre de wereldpremière. Muziek die als blijvende herinnering door de stichting Liberationconcert aan het Visitors Centre en philharmonie zuidnederland wordt aangeboden. Henry Purcell (1659-1695) schreef zijn Funeral Music voor zijn zeer geliefde Queen Mary in een tijd die raakvlakken heeft met het heden. Pas net de dertig gepasseerd, werd ook zij slachtoffer van de pokkenepidemie die heel Engeland in haar greep hield aan het einde van 1694. In de bittere koude werd het lichaam van Mary vervoerd naar de Westminster Abbey. De kist werd voorafgegaan door trommelslagers en koperblazers die de Purcells dodenmars speelden waarmee
dit Liberation Concert opent. De Belgische filmcomponist Dirk Brossé (1960) schreef met For the unknown soldier een ingetogen stuk voor strijkorkest en harp dat de soldaten wil herdenken die naamloos gestorven zijn. De Amerikaan Samuel Barber (19101981) zoog de traditionele Europese muziek in zich op en vertaalde het in zijn werken naar een eigen oer-Amerikaanse stijl. In zijn Knoxville: Summer of 1915 voor sopraan en orkest blikt de componist terug op zijn jeugd en een volmaakte zomeravond in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten. Als 6-jarig jongetje hoort Barber de geluiden van een koets, voorbijgangers en een zeldzame auto. Zijn gedachten dwalen af naar zijn dierbare familieleden. Biddend valt het kind in de wiegende muziek in slaap. In zijn Militaire Symfonie zoekt Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) door het gebruik van veel slagwerk en trompetsignalen een militaire sfeer op. Met name in het tweede en vierde deel klinkt het helse tumult van oorlog, aanzwellend van een angstwekkend begin tot een heldhaftig hoogtepunt.

This year’s program honors their sacrifice and dedication for the liberation of a people they did not even know. During this year’s Liberation Concert, we will experience the world premiere of the special hymn written by composer Mark Pütz in honor of the new Visitor Centre to be. This hymn is an everlasting gift by the Liberation concert foundation and philharmonie zuidnederland to the American Battle Monuments Commission. Henry Purcell (1659-1695) wrote ‘Funeral Music’ for his beloved Queen Mary in a time which shows similarities with our precent time. In her thirties, Queen Mary became victim of the smallpox epidemic which spread throughout England in 1694. In the bitter cold, her remains were carried to Westminster Abbey. The coffin was accompanied by drummers and a brass section which played the Purcell’s death march by which this Liberation concert is opened.
The Belgian film composer Dirk Brossé (1960) wrote ‘For the unknown soldier’ a modest piece for a string orchestra and harp which seeks to remember those who fell and rest in unknown graves. The American composer Samuel Barber (1910-1981) absorbed the traditional European music and translated it into his own primal American compositions. In his ‘Knoxville: Summer of 1915’ for soprano and orchestra, the composer looks back to his own childhood and a perfect summer evening in the Southern part of the United States. As a 6-year-old boy, Barber heard the sounds of the carriages, passers-by and a rare automobile on the streets. His thoughts strayed to his beloved relatives. While praying, the child fell asleep by the gentle music. In his ‘Militaire Symfonie’, Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) is searching, by using percussion and trumpet signals for a military atmosphere. Particularly in the second and fourth part the hellish tumult of war can be vividly heard, swelling from a terrifying start to a heroic highlight.

Biography the South Netherlands Philharmonic The South Netherlands Philharmonic is a vibrant, professional symphony orchestra with a rich diversity of concert formulas. The repertoire covers the complete symphonic canon, from ancient masterpieces to exhilarating world premières. Under the direction of its intendant Stefan Rosu, the South Netherlands Philharmonic is an organisation that continuous to push its borders. Liberation Concert en philharmonie zuidnederland hebben een meerjarige samenwerking op muziekeducatief gebied, om zo de jeugd op een zinvolle manier te betrekken bij de dodenherdenking en het thema vrijheid. Er is een project voor zowel het primair als het middelbaar onderwijs.
Liberation Concert and philharmonie zuidnederland have a long-term collaboration concerning music education, in order to engage young people with the commemoration. One of the central topics is freedom. Read more about the Monoloog voor de Vrijheid and Sounds of Freedom.
Primair onderwijs: Monoloog voor de Vrijheid De Monoloog voor de Vrijheid wordt elk jaar uitgevoerd rondom het Liberation Concert op verschillende scholen in Zuid- Limburg. In deze voorstelling staan kinderen van groep 7-8 stil bij het begrip ‘Vrijheid’. Actrice Lindsay Zwaan en twee musici van philharmonie zuidnederland vertellen het verhaal van de 20-jarige John Morrison uit Ohio die ligt begraven in Margraten. Daarnaast wordt de vraag gesteld, wat vrijheid eigenlijk is en hoe werk je aan vrijheid voor iedereen. Middelbaar onderwijs: Sounds of Freedom In Sounds of Freedom maken middelbare scholieren een muzikale boodschap voor nabestaanden van Amerikaanse soldaten die in Margraten begraven liggen. Vorig seizoen hebben Leerlingen van het United World College en het Bonnefantencollege, samen met compositiestudenten van de conservatoria Tilburg en Maastricht online gecomponeerd, waarna op 17 mei alle composities werden gerepeteerd en
uitgevoerd door een ensemble van philharmonie zuidnederland, onder leiding van dirigent Lucas Vis. Op 31 mei, Memorial Day werden persoonlijke videoboodschappen naar de familieleden van de soldaten die in Margraten begraven liggen gestuurd. Wij zijn erg geholpen met deze informatie. De leerlingen gebruiken de verhalen over de soldaten bij het maken van hun compositie. Wij zouden het dan ook erg op prijs stellen wanneer u deze informatie met ons wilt delen. Monoloog voor de Vrijheid (Monologue for Freedom) In the performance Monoloog voor de Vrijheid, young students reflect on the concept of ‘Freedom’, which the Southern Netherlands acquired in 1944 thanks to the efforts of American soldiers. Actress Lindsay Zwaan and two musicians from philharmonie zuidnederland, tell the story of the 20-year-old John Morrison from Ohio, who was buried in Margraten. The Monologue describes how he sacrificed his life for our freedom. In the Monoloog voor de Vrijheid, students are also asked questions about freedom. What is freedom really? And what responsibilities should be taken to preserve freedom for everybody? Sounds of Freedom In Sounds of Freedom, high school students create a musical message for the relatives of American soldiers buried in Margraten. Last season students of the United World College and the Bonnenfantencollage worked together with composition students from the
conservatories in Tilburg and Maastricht. The groups composed their pieces online, after which all compositions were rehearsed and performed live by an ensemble consisting of musicians from philharmonie zuidnederland, led by conductor Lucas Vis. On the 31st of May, Memorial Day, personal video messages were sent to the relatives of the soldiers buried in Margraten. For this season a second edition of this project is planned.

The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten is de enige Amerikaanse militaire begraafplaats in Nederland. Deze eervolle plek wordt beheerd door de American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).
The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten is the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands. This honorable site is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).
Op de ‘Walls of the Missing’, links en rechts bij aankomst, staan de namen van 1.722 vermiste soldaten. Voorbij de toren op de uitgestrekte weide liggen bijna 8.300 soldaten begraven. Uniek aan deze begraafplaats is het adoptieprogramma, begeleid door de Stichting Adoptiegraven Margraten. Sinds 1945 worden de graven geadopteerd en verzorgd door mensen in en om de gemeenschap van EijsdenMargraten. Met het project ‘De Gezichten van Margraten’ tracht de Stichting Verenigde Adoptanten Amerikaanse Oorlogsgraven zoveel mogelijk van deze soldaten een gezicht te geven door bij hun graven en hun namen een foto te plaatsen. Inmiddels zijn alle graven en de namen op de ‘Walls of the Missing’ geadopteerd. Een bijzonder eerbetoon aan onze bevrijders.
On the ‘Walls of the Missing’, left and right on arrival, are the names of 1,722 missing soldiers. Beyond the tower on the vast meadow, nearly 8,300 soldiers are buried. Unique to this cemetery is the adoption program, supervised by the Foundation for Adopting Graves American Cemetery Margraten. Since 1945 the graves have been adopted and cared for by people in and around the community of Eijsden-Margraten. With the ‘Faces of Margraten’ project, the Foundation United Adopters American War Graves tries, as much as possible, to give a face to these soldiers by placing a photo at their graves and names. Meanwhile, all graves and names on the ‘Walls of the Missing’ have been adopted in a special tribute to our liberators.

Het concert vindt plaats op de Amerikaanse Begraafplaats en hier gelden een aantal speciale regels:
The concert will be performed at the Netherlands American Cemetery, where some special rules apply:
• gedraag u op een rustige en respectvolle wijze; • zet uw mobiele telefoon uit en spreek op gedempte toon; • respecteer de graven, ga niet op het gras zitten, liggen of op het gras picknicken; • Roken is verboden • huisdieren worden niet toegelaten; • grote tassen zijn niet toegestaan; • volg de aanwijzingen van de beveiliging en/of organisatie op en ga niet in discussie.
• visitors should behave in a respectful and dignified fashion; • turn off your cell phones and speak in a low voice; • sitting or lying on the grass and picnicking on the grass is not permitted; • Smoking is prohibited • pets are prohibited • big bags are prohibited • follow all instructions given by the officials responsible for maintaining order promptly and without question.
