For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders . . . .Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end (Isaiah 9:6-7).

Governmental authority has been set upon the shoulders of Jesus. Biblically, His governmental authority is referred to in many symbolic ways. It is obviously described here as the Key of David for a reason. We know that David was personally a “man after God’s own heart” and that by appointment was a king who carried Heaven’s authority and influence (see 1 Sam. 13:14; Acts 13:22). The Key of David speaks of authority to lock and unlock. The “key” to David’s life was this: out of extravagant intimacy as a man after God’s own heart, he ultimately walked in authority to stand as a giant-slayer and as a king appointed by the King. The combination of David’s cultivated heart after God and the investment of authority from Heaven qualified him to stand at a point of history and be a vehicle that changed things forever. He was not used because he had been positioned by man but because he was positioned by Heaven and created as an outrageous lover of God and of His ways. Likewise, generations of sons and daughters have been created and commissioned to move in the same authority that was bestowed upon an unlikely group of disciples 2,000 years ago in an upper room. Jesus handed the Keys of the Kingdom—His authority—to the Church in the New Testament. Right now, today, He has literally handed the Key of David to us, His Church in the form of the Keys of the Kingdom! (See Matt. 16:19.) Of course, I believe that Isaiah 22:22 is a Messianic prophecy and
