Ethiopian Resturant

Full Renovation

Within the Ethiopian Culture the emblem of Ethiopia is composed of a golden pentagram called “Coat of Arms” symbolizing the unity of the people. This custom of the people will be carried on throughout the design of the resturant illustrating the unitu of food, music, and the very fabric they wear as the three building blocks of there culture. Based off the form of the emblem of “Coat of Arms”, circular forms will be repeated throughout the second and third floor. The restaurant includes tables, booths and chairs in a circular formation resembleming the Ethoipian food platters they share while eating. To emphasis the unity of the three elements of the food, fabric, and culture, the second floor of the restaurant will be cut in 2/3 leaving access spaces near the windows to allow sight of concert or performance space to be seen from that floor. The form of the circle from the emblem is also played within the structure of the 3rd level and plateform of the stage.

Cutting the floor in an organic shape opens up the interior to have more volume to hightlight the sun light coming in at different angles depending on the time of day. This translates to the radiating rays of light within the emblem to the actual design of the building. One of the kitchen walls has window craving to allow users to see of how the food is made, following the theme of letting light shine in. As for creating unity within the fabric, similar Ethiopian fabric will be used in several features including seating as well as drapping elements within the third level.

The Banyan Treehouse

Re-Design

Designed by the Rockefeller Partners Architects, the Banyan Treehouse showcases their ability to craft and develop a small space into a useful retreat. The Banyan Treehouse has a major focus on having an environmentally friendly space that will support several different functions. This could include being used for a guest house, retreat house, or for similar tasks of just studying or showering. In terms of the environmentally friendly impact of the space, the designers decided to raise the house off the ground with the use of several steel columns. The structure starts with an individual’s journey through a concrete stairway, that wraps itself around an existing tree 12 feet off the ground, and up to the front door. This was all a part of their plan to reducing the amount of physical foundation footprint while also giving the structure a more treehouse appeal. At 170 square feet, the Banyan Treehouse features a water closet, wood fire stove, a refrigerator, day bed, and a private outdoor shower.
