Destin Forward Explores Area Waterways By Kristy Davies, Communications Intern

T

he aroma of salty air, fish being fileted, and a warm summer breeze brought serenity and calmness to a busy day full of activities for the Destin Forward Class of 2012, on Sept. 8. Waterways Day is held for the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce leadership class to provide education and insight into the community, history, and industries of Destin. Sitting at a table with poise, dark and light grey hair combed neatly to the side, and with beard trimmed close against almost unseen wrinkles from the sun, Dewey Destin, descendant of Destin’s founder Leonard Destin, spoke to the Destin Forward class. He painted a picture of his ancestor sailing from Connecticut to search for salvage wrecks before delving into how the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” came to be founded by his family. Sitting in the cool air of Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant, Destin smiled as he talked about a small Civil War skirmish in Destin and how Billy Marler told the postmaster the town was called “Destin,” which is how the city got its name.

Shane A. Moody, CCE, IOM I’m writing this month’s column while on break at the Florida Chamber Foundation’s Future of Florida Forum. I’m here with your chair elect Bill Lindsley and a past chairman of the board, Kevin Bowyer. We’re here with business leaders from across the state of Florida learning more about the six pillars of Florida’s future economy. The six pillars is something you’ve heard me discuss/read about here in this column before. It’s the first strategic plan for Florida – ever – and your chamber began the process of adopting these pillars

about two years ago. It’s a process that, I sincerely hope, we will continue, so that we in the Destin area can be on the same page as the rest of the state. It’s always great to get together with my chamber peers from across the state. It’s great to be with the business leaders of the state. It’s always great to catch up with my friends and contacts at businesses from Northwest Florida, like Dr. Rick Harper and the Gulf Power folks, all of whom are here. We learn more and more about the progress of the state’s strategic plan and how we as a chamber and community need to buy into the plan, so we can move our local and regional economies forward. Our last speaker of the day today may be the best speaker I’ve heard since I’ve been in Florida, a span of eight years. His name is John Doggett, a business professor (understatement!) at the University of Texas. He

discussed college football, which really isn’t a surprise since he is from UT. He discussed the passion that we Americans have for college football, especially in the south and in Florida. He discussed how we always look for improvement in our teams, how we always want the best coaching, and how we always want to win. He transitioned into talking about America and Florida. He discussed our business climate. He discussed our government, the debt our country faces, and the impacts it is having on us as a nation and a business community. He talked about other countries, our competition. He discussed Brazil, India, Russia, and China. He discussed how those countries and their citizens have always wanted what we have in America. He discussed the growth in those countries, how they’ve transformed them-

selves. He showed slides and statistics that would blow your mind. He made bold statements about the state of the United States of America. But I don’t share with you any of that because, really, the first statement he made was the most impactful. And frankly, quite true. His statement? If we approached our situation in America, and approached our businesses, with the same passion we approached college football, we cannot fail. I couldn’t agree more. After all, passion for our businesses, our community, our state, and our country is how we will continue to build this world-class community one business at a time. With wishes for continued success, and until next month,

A Message from the Chairman of the Board I feel like it’s the 7th inning stretch, and we have a 3 run lead heading into the final innings of the game with my term as Chairman of the Destin Area Mike Freeman Chamber of Commerce. In other words, I generally feel good about where we are; however, I know there is more to be done to ensure a strong finish. 2011 began with some fairly lofty goals, which included a full review of chamber programs and events. We moved the monthly chamber breakfast to a luncheon format, known as the Leaders in Business Lunch. Also, we upgraded our spring event, Sunset on the

Harbor, to include a fishing tournament. Finally, and this was a big one, we successfully conveyed the Seafood Festival from the chamber back to its original roots with the Destin Charter Boat Association, led by Mike Eller and his team. I am happy to say we have completed all three objectives, and I believe all have proven to be good moves for our chamber and its members. I am real excited about this year’s Seafood Festival and its linear format along the harbor. A lot of hard work has been done by the stakeholders and the community at large in preparation for the festival. I hope all of Destin will show up and support its signature community event, like I plan to do. As promised, the Destin Area Chamber has provided advice and support and will have a presence at the festival. A couple of other goals that we continue to make progress towards involve our Harbor Committee and our Economic Development Committee. The Harbor Committee chairperson, Mary Anne Windes, has led a great effort in supporting and promoting the harbor boardwalk proj-

ect. Although it hasn’t been easy with all the dynamics and personalities surrounding the initiative, I definitely believe her efforts have made a difference. Another initiative is related to economic development and the formation of a super committee with its members populated by a cross section of chamber executives and chamber members in the Okaloosa county area. The general purpose for its creation would be to pursue industry and business that is not necessarily on the radar of the Economic Development Council due to size and/or purpose, yet important to our overall economic growth as a business community. I view its formation as a supplement to the great work already being

done by our EDC, which generally focuses more on industry with a defense component and/or large employers compatible to our area. So, as you can see, our work is really never done; however, we seem to be hitting the ball well and scoring some runs. I would always tell my son, “you can’t hit the ball if you aren’t swinging the bat.” I’m proud to say, your Destin Area Chamber is definitely swinging the bat!

Chairman’s Club Spotlight Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort The ANNIKA Foundation, founded by international golf legend Annika Sorenstam, in partnership with Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, will host a one-of-a-kind celebrity fundraising event this Spring. The inaugural ANNIKA & Friends at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort will take place May 18-19, 2012. Annika, along with her celebrity friends and famous athletes, will join in an amazing weekend filled with golf, social events, and fine dining. All proceeds from ANNIKA & Friends at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort will go toward implementing SPARK – the leading physical education program for children in schools – in elementary schools in Northwest Florida and across the state. Annika is often considered the greatest female golfer of all time, and her extremely successful career changed the way women’s golf is played, viewed, and covered. She helped form ANNIKA Foundation, whose mission is to teach children the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition and offer aspiring junior golfers opportunities to pursue their dreams. In 2009, the ANNIKA Foundation partnered with SPARK, and Annika became its national spokesperson to help educate America’s youth about the benefits of physical fitness and proper nutrition. Proceeds from ANNIKA & Friends at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort will provide support for the implementation of SPARK in selected elementary schools in both Okaloosa and Walton counties. On Friday, May 18, the event will kick off with a cocktail recepwww.DestinChamber.com

tion featuring ANNIKA wines and dinner with Annika, celebrities, and sports personalities. On Saturday, May 19, the day will begin with a SPARK children’s fitness and health program, followed by a golf clinic conducted by Annika, with the assistance of several celebrities at the Raven Golf Club Practice Facility. Saturday’s pro-am tournament will consist of 26 teams of four amateurs paired with a prominent celebrity, LPGA player, PGA Tour player, or sports personality. The teams will play at Sandestin’s Raven Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. According to John Russell, president of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resorts and Sandestin Investments LLC, this event is an excellent opportunity to help raise funds and awareness for an issue that is important in our local community and nationwide. “Sandestin is proud to host the event and to showcase our outstanding championship golf facilities,” said Russell. As an extra-special ending to the festivities, ANNIKA & Friends at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort will feature a charity concert by a major performing artist, at Grand Boulevard at Sandestin. The concert will be held Saturday, May 19, at 7 p.m. Ticket proceeds will go to the ANNIKA Foundation, and ticket sales information will be announced soon.

FORWARD continued from Cover “It was a joy to grow up in Destin,” said Destin, recalling his childhood. “We played on the beach; no one but us crabbing. We actually got tired of ‘em.” Joining the group at the table was long-time fishing and charter captain Kelly Windes. “I bought my first charter boat in 1971,” said Windes, as he reminisced. “Fishing back then we didn’t have electronics. It wasn’t reserved and conservative as it is now; people were colorful.” Windes shared tales of his mother collecting change in a bread box and giving it to him to buy his first charter boat after getting out of the US Navy in 1971. He chuckled when he spoke of how he learned truth behind the Kitty Mitchell fish, also called speckled hind. “The speckled hind was a local term,” he said with a sheepish grin. “I learned that at Trader Jon’s in Pensacola there was a working girl with a freckled derriere named ‘Kitty Mitchell.’” After its chat with Destin and Windes, the class pro-

ceeded to Coast Guard Station Destin, where Petty Officer 1st Class Jason King, operations officer, gave a tour. Stopping to talk briefly in the lobby and offices, King explained the station’s mission. “We monitor and enforce the law,” he said. “Boating education is the key. We have good communication, and there are a lot of good people out there that make our job easier.” With 44,000 personnel serving in the Coast Guard worldwide, there are 13 people working the duty section at Coast Guard Station Destin in 48- to 72-hour shifts. They also assist local law enforcement and the military mission. While King talked, a large black Labrador named Rudder splashed around in the salty, bay water and gnawed on palm tree bark. Rudder is the station’s newest mascot and team member. After learning about the Coast Guard, the Destin Forward class was treated to a trip around Destin Harbor and, briefly, into the Gulf of Mexico by Southern Star Dolphin Cruises and Capt. Cliff Atwell. Casually steering the large boat, Atwell shared stories of what the harbor looked like

Don’t “Flu” Around Submitted by White-Wilson Medical Center Flu season is just around the corner, and the community is already buzzing about the annual influenza vaccine. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you consult with your physician on which version of the vaccine is best for you and to determine if there is any reason you should not receive the vaccine. “There are certain risks to flu vaccination that we believe your primary care doctor is best positioned to address with you,” said Dr. Frank Francone, a boardcertified family medicine physician with White-Wilson Medical Center’s Immediate Care Clinic. “This is most important for patients with multiple medical illnesses and chronic medical diseases. Your primary care physician is ideally suited to counsel you on the risks and benefits of the influenza vaccination, taking into consideration your past medical history, medication use, allergies, etc., and can advise you if there is a reason you should not get the flu vaccine.” There are several variations of the influenza vaccine, which include a nasal mist, the regular flu shot, and the high-dose flu shot. The nasal flu mist is the live, but weakened flu vaccine that is given to healthy patients 2 to 49 years of age. The regular flu shot is NETWORK OCTOBER 2011

for patients 6 months to 64 years old, and the high dose flu vaccine is for patients 65 years and older. Patients 65 years and older generally do not respond to the standard dose flu vaccine and are also more likely to be hospitalized or die from flu complications. “The main advantage of early immunization is that it ensures you get the vaccine, if the supply is limited, and you are protected in case the flu season peaks early,” said Francone. “It takes the body about 2 weeks to form protective antibodies. Vaccination should occur before the traditional peak of the flu season so that protective antibodies are already in place when the peak of flu season arrives.” The CDC recommends that people get the vaccine as soon as it is available. Patients can call schedule an appointment to receive the vaccination in White-Wilson’s Pediatric, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Immediate Care Clinics. For individuals certain of the type of vaccination needed, White-Wilson will offer a Flu Shot Clinic at the main Fort Walton Beach campus. Details on the Flu Clinic will be available at www.whitewilson.com. The flu shot is covered 100% by most major insurance companies with no co-pay necessary. www.DestinChamber.com

while he was growing up in Destin. “It’s changed drastically since Hurricane Opal in 1995,” he said over the speaker system, as he cruised past landmarks such as A.J.’s. Seafood & Oyster Bar and Norriego Point, which was recently altered by Tropical Storm Lee. To close the day of education and adventure, the Destin Forward class gathered at Clement Taylor Park to learn about what the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance is and what it does. Alison McDowell, senior grant manager for the alliance, explained how much of a difference the alliance has made and that more needs to be done. At the end of the day, the Destin Forward class was in awe of the history and many things learned over the course of just one day in the heart of Destin. “I think that anyone who is involved in the community or plans on establishing themselves here in Destin should experience Waterways Day,” said Todd Scali of Easy Street Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals and a member of the Destin Forward class. “Knowing the history really gives you a real respect and honor to be involved and a part of the Destin community.”

teer and get CERT training. CERT is Community Emergency Response Team. Training is provided at no cost to County residents, and it is an excellent way to assist your immediate neighborhood during emergencies. Learn basic disaster preparedness skills, fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. For more information, call our Emergency Management Department at 651-7150. If you would like to have me visit or speak at a neighborhood meeting or you are with a civic organization, please call me at 855-1042 or email me at dparisot@ co.okaloosa.fl.us. My sincerest best wishes for a wonderful and prosperous fall season. 2060156

Greetings from your District 2 Commissioner. Firstly, I want to thank our County employees who responded to Tropical Storm Lee over the Labor Day weekend. Thankfully we did not experience major damages. Thank you to the staff at the Emergency Operations Center for tracking and updating weather reports; to our Beach Safety people for keeping our residents and visitors safe at the beaches; and to our Public Works employees who monitored our roads and removed down tree limbs to keep our roads open. There were a few locations where roads were temporarily barricaded due to flooding. Also, thank you to the Water & Sewer personnel who were monitoring our lift stations and responding to customers. By now you should have received your TRIM (Truth in Millage) notice from the Property Appraiser’s office showing proposed property taxes for this tax year. There are only two line entries, Okaloosa County and MSTU Parks, under the control of the Board of County Commissioners. The rest are set by other Taxing Authorities, e.g., School Board, your City Council, your Fire District Board, etc. Please note that the Board of County Commissioners did not increase the millage rate for our two items, compare column 3 (proposed) with column 1 (2010). Any increases in the dollar values of proposed taxes in column 3 on Homestead properties are due to the 1.5 percent increase last October in the CPI index. For more information about this, see Mr. Pete Smith’s explanation of the Recapture Rule on page 2 of the August 2011 TRIM UPDATE sent with your Trim notice. Thus, Okaloosa County will continue to have the lowest county-wide millage rate of all of Florida’s 67 counties for the third consecutive year. Your Board made significant reductions in expenditures and reductions of an additional 33 staff positions to make this happen, with total of 118 positions cut since 2008. If you go by the old Garnier’s sewer treatment plant off Racetrack Road, you will note that it is almost all demolished. This work is being done “in-house” by County Water & Sewer personnel at an estimated savings of over $500,000, versus contracting. Additional savings are being realized by recycling and selling over 90% of the demolition materials, including all metals and the broken up concrete. When complete, the land will be used as a community park. The remaining building will be renovated by the County Facility Maintenance Department for use by our Emergency Management Services for storage of supplies and equipment and for an ambulance satellite station. Doing this renovation in-house will again save significant tax dollars, as well as provide remodeling of the highest quality workmanship. If you have not seen what these people can do, visit the county commission meeting rooms at the County Courthouse, the Brackin Building on Wilson Street in Crestview, or the County Veterans’ Service Office in the old hospital building in Fort Walton Beach. We still have a few months left in the 2011 hurricane season, so make sure you are prepared to protect your lives and property. Remember, the first 72 hours are on you. One way you can help your local neighborhood is to volun-
