Shane A. Moody, CCE, IOM Every day, we talk to members and prospective members about the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce and what the chamber means to them. Or what the chamber can do for them. Or what the chamber does that they never really see. Or any of numerous more topics. I always like to ask them what it is they like about the chamber, or what they hope the chamber can do for them. 70%-plus of all members of any chamber join the chamber for one common feature – networking. The benefits of networking are many, and, while members want networking, they want it for different reasons. No two people network the same way, and seldom do they network for the same reasons. But do they know this? Or do they know how to network? For networking to be a successful benefit, it’s important to understand

how to network effectively. We’ve seen it all, and we’ve heard from members about the different ways people “network” at our events. So I thought I’d share with you some of the different styles of networking we see. Read on to see if any of these describe you. The Potted Plant – Not everyone in the business world has an outgoing, easy to meet personality. There are many introverts attending networking events. They come in, slowly and shyly, and try to avoid being seen. They find a spot they’re comfortable, and they stay there. They say hello to the few folks that pass them, or that they run into at the food line or bar, and that’s it. They’re not likely to meet many people, and they eventually turn away from networking events. If you see the potted plant at an event, reach out and help this person along. Introduce yourself, introduce them to others, and make them feel welcome. The Power Broker – All the power broker is looking for is the most powerful people at an event. This type of networker doesn’t care if he gets any business or not, he/ she simply wants to “hang” with the people he feels are important. And if he can’t find them, he’ll ask around for them, and always end with “well if you see him, please tell him I’m looking

for him.” This networking style usually ends with no new or real introductions being made and proves to be very ineffective. The Rock Star – Yeah, we all wanted to be a rock star at some point in our lives. But networking events are not the place to try to prove you are. You know the type – very popular people, making sure everyone sees them, waits on them, and tells you their personal successes. This is the person with whom you can’t really have a discussion, because they don’t ever hear anything you say. These are just a few of the networking types you see at chamber events. None of these are effective for the real purpose of networking. But if you want to be effective, keep this in mind: When at an event, meet and mingle, but don’t sell. People don’t like to be sold at social time. Get to know them, then call them back later. Don’t seem desperate. Desperate people make desperate decisions, and desperate actions come from those decisions. Have business cards, but not a box of them in your hand! You want to exchange cards, but only if there’s benefit to both parties. Be confident, but not cocky. People like to do business with people

who believe in what they do, but not people who think they are the only ones who do it. Understand that personalities are different. Understand you can’t deal with everyone the same way. Be flexible in tone, attitude, and presence. So next time you’re at a chamber event, look around and see what types of networkers you see. There are many more than I’ve included here (available space), but I promise you’ll see some of the above wherever you may go. And maybe I’ll be able to share some of the other types later. If you have time, take advantage of the features we provide for the benefit of networking. You’ll meet some great people, create some relationships, and even earn some business from it – but only if you do it effectively. After all, providing networking opportunities for you, our members, is just one of the ways we’ll continue to build this world-class community one business at a time. With wishes for continued success, and until next month,

Network, a supplement to The Destin Log, is published and printed monthly for the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. 4484 Legendary Drive, Suite A, Destin, FL 32541 (850) 837-6241 - www.DestinChamber.com www.DestinChamber.com

A Message from the Chairman of the Board

Looking Eastward

I had the privilege of working in the ofďŹ ce of the Florida Legislature’s Secretary of the Senate for four years during the late 1990s. While working for the Secretary, one of my duties was to educate groups visiting the Senate chamber. I would often ask the visitors who their State Senator or House Bill Lindsley Member was. Usually I would get blank stares in response to my question. Then, I would ask them who represented their district in Congress. I would often get the same response. When I moved on to the President, most of the time they would get that right! The ultimate point I was trying to accomplish was that they needed to know who their State legislator was because that person often had more control of their daily lives than anyone in Washington, D.C. Because of my experience, being engaged in Tallahassee is second nature. It is encouraging for me to be part of an organization that focuses on this

very idea. Your Chamber Board of Directors strongly believes in being engaged in the legislative process. Recently, I had the opportunity to accompany the Destin Forward class on its trip to Tallahassee to visit the Florida Legislature. This is my third trip with the Destin Forward class. I always enjoy going with people that have little or no experience with the legislative process. The education provided by the trip is invaluable. The class members are able to gain an inside prospective into how the legislature functions. They witness committee meetings and sit in the galleries of both the House of Representatives and Senate. They even toured the Senate oor. This hands-on encounter helps everyone gain a better understanding of the legislative process. The Chamber believes this experience is a vital part of shaping our leaders of tomorrow. As a Chamber of Commerce, we are respected by our legislators. This respect has been earned because we are active, engaged, motivated, educated, and unafraid to voice our opinion. We have developed a great rapport with each of them that allows us to have the access necessary to voice the concerns of our members. A very special thank you for setting everything up goes out to Samantha Sullivan in Rep. Gaetz’s ofďŹ ce, our brand

new Secretary of the Senate and my good friend Debbie Brown, Rep. Matt Gaetz, Rep. Marti Coley, and Sen. Don Gaetz. Not only do we have the respect of our legislators, we also have the respect of the Florida Chamber of Commerce. The Florida Chamber of Commerce is the state’s leading business advocate. Having its respect and ear is paramount to our efforts to effect change in Tallahassee. It is an incredible partner and friend of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. During our visit, the class received an in-depth brieďŹ ng about legislation that affects Florida business. One very notable takeaway from the meeting was how much your Destin Area Chamber of Commerce is appreciated statewide. Through the signiďŹ cant efforts of Shane Moody and our Board of Directors, the Chamber is widely known as a true leader and advocate for business issues in Tallahassee and throughout the State.
