Shane A. Moody, CCE, IOM As I write this on May 14, it’s the day after Mother’s Day. It’s also the day after my oldest daughter Jennings’ college graduation (with Cum Laude honors, no less). So I’m coming off of a weekend of celebration. It’s also the Week of Blessings in Destin, a week that includes the Blessing of the Fleet. The Blessing of Fleet is the more than 50-year-old event that brings the Destin community together like no other. It’s a celebration of the safety and success of our fishing fleet. It’s a celebration of a tradition and a business on which this great community was founded. It’s a celebration of the families and the names of our city’s history. It’s a celebration of commitment. The Blessing of the Fleet

was so popular and so successful, other events were added to create the Week of Blessings. We celebrate the successes of our business community with Blessing of the Marketplace during the week. It’s a celebration of the hard work put in over the years of the men and women who own and/ or manage businesses in the Destin community. The Chamber is blessed by the participating churches during this ceremony as well. Again, it’s a celebration of commitment, a commitment to making the Destin economy all it can be so we may all continue to enjoy the quality of life and quality of place our home gives to us. This is not unlike my daughter’s college graduation. Graduation is a celebration of commitment. It’s not only a commitment of four years of a life away at school, but the work that goes into all years leading up to that moment. The commitment of parents who encouraged the importance of education. The commitment of teachers who instilled knowledge and know-how into their students. The commitment of the students themselves

to work to become the best they can be. Just like the celebration of Mother’s Day. As I think about all of the above, I think about the commitment of mothers in this community. I think about the commitment of those mothers who are married to people with whom I work every day, or work with late into the evenings on important issues. Many times, we leave the mothers to do the work we can’t do because of “things” that take us other places. I think about the commitment of those community leaders who ARE mothers, who somehow find the time and effort to not only raise their children, but give to the growth and prosperity of this community. And the common theme of all of this is commitment. The commitment to grow personally and professionally. The commitment to ensure those around us are cared for. The commitment to guide our businesses and organizations to be the best they can be. With the wave of emotions I’ve ridden the past few weeks, it’s great to find the positives that exist. Too often we find ourselves caught up in the negatives in the

world, caught up in the 24hour news cycle, caught up in the “what next?” mode. We find ourselves looking at something like our child’s graduation and wondering “where the heck did those four years go?” But when we come out of those times, isn’t it great to find ourselves in such a positive place? Isn’t it great to find the positive things in the world that surround us? Isn’t it great to find a quality of life and quality of place such as the one we enjoy? Thank you all for your commitment. Thank you for helping make Destin the best place I’ve ever lived, worked, and played. Thank you for keeping the Destin area the place I love to be raising my children. Thank you for your commitment in helping the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce build this world-class community one business at a time! With wishes for continued success, and until next month,

A Message from the Chairman of the Board

A Sense of Community As some of you may know, I am, unfortunately, not a native of Destin. I have had the pleasure of calling this beautiful strip of land home for the past 10 years. Growing up in the Miami area definitely gives me a unique perspective and a sincere appreciation for our area. Bill Lindsley Some may assume that I have brought with me big-city values. On the contrary, it is the big-city issues that I reject. While I happened to be born in Miami, I CHOOSE to live in Destin. This is the place I call home, the place I choose to work. This is the place I choose to raise my three children. Besides the obvious beauty that the Destin area offers, one of its greatest charms is the sense of community that remains even as our population grows. Whether it’s a tee ball game at Threadgill Park or the Blessing of the Fleet, the citizens of Destin maintain the heart of our small town and the hospitality to those who seek to share it. I consider it a blessing to share the spirit of Destin. Many others recognize our abundant gifts as well. This week marks the anniversary of more than 50 years of the Blessing of the Destin Fishing Fleet. A few years ago, the Church of Destin, comprised of 14 different denominations, decided to expand the blessings from just the

fishing fleet to the entire marketplace. This was done in an effort to embrace the whole community. By the time you read this, the Week of Blessings will have past, but I highly encourage anyone who has not attended one of the services to do so. In past years, I have had the pleasure to experience the Blessing of the Fleet aboard the Sunrise, one of Capt. Kelly Windes’ boats. The experience gave me an incredible perspective of the history, culture, values, and optimism that permeates our great city. But perhaps the most meaningful part was watching my young children, who ARE Destin natives, learn about the values and traditions that make their hometown such a special and amazing place. When you see the hand of the pastor raised to bless the boat, the sense of community pride is overwhelming. It’s the kind of image that will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. What greater value is there to teach our children than the connection between faith and community? As I near the halfway point of my chairmanship, I thought I would provide an update on our progress regarding the six-pillars or Florida’s future economy certification progress. If you are a regular Network reader, you might remember that in my January column I mentioned that my major initiative this year was to attain the Florida Chamber of Commerce’s Six-Pillar certification. As a refresher, the certification would align our future economic development interests with those of the State of Florida. The benefit to us would be increased opportunities and exposure within the state economic development arena. The intent is economic development through diversifica-

tion. We never lose sight of the powerful impact that tourism and the military play in our economy, yet we also look for additional ways to support year-round economic growth. As I write this, we are on track to receive our certification by the end of the year. Recently we had our first organizational meeting. In attendance were representatives from the four Okaloosa County chambers of commerce and representatives from the Okaloosa Economic Development Council. At the meeting, former Destin Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Kevin Bowyer, from Warren Averett O’Sullivan Creel, was elected to serve as Chairman of the Executive Committee. Our next step is to hold a meeting for community stakeholders. This should take place in July or August. The objective of the meeting will be to educate our community stakeholders on each of the six-pillars and allow them to choose which one they would like to help develop. I am looking forward to this community support and to the process taking a more definitive shape. I would like to thank each of you for making Destin, Destin. Without each of your efforts and cooperation, there would be no sense of community. I am immensely proud to call this area home. I am equally proud to spread the word about our piece of paradise. Until next month,

Bill Lindsley 2012 Chairman of the Board, Simple HR

Hunt Joins Chamber as Events Coordinator The Destin Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the hiring of Suzy Nicholson Hunt, as its Events Coordinator. “Adding Suzy to our team brings an extreme level of professionalism to our organization. She’s someone with tremendous experience in Destin, and she’s well respected by the business community,” said Chamber President and CEO Shane Moody. “I look forward to working with her and having her assist us in making our events more creative, more fun, and more valuable to our members.” Hunt grew up as an Air Force “brat” living in several different states, from North Dakota to Oklahoma, as well as in London, England. After moving to Fort Walton Beach in 1975, her father retired at Hurlburt Field, and the Emerald Coast became her home. 9 Graduate from Chamber Leadership and Community Education Program “I have no doubt that we’ve succeeded with our goals: to create a group of very informed business professionals who could help address any issues we may face in Destin,” said Karen McCarthy, Chamber Board member and AVP of Florida Operations for Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union, as she spoke to 2012 graduates of Destin Forward, during a ceremony on May 11. Destin Forward, the Chamber’s community education and leadership program, was created by the Board of Directors to help find and educate future city and business leaders. After a retreat in August, the class spent the next eight months touring and learning about Destin’s waterways; tourism industry; development and real estate; arts, culture, and non-profits; environment; city programs and services; military bases; and the state legislature. Class require-

ments also included attendance at several Chamber and civic functions. As its community service project, the class created a plaque recognizing Destin’s first official Post Office and providing the history of the US Postal Service in this area. The plaque was dedicated to the City of Destin and Destin History & Fishing Museum, where the first Post Office building now stands, with a ribbon cutting on May 7. During the graduation event, the Destin Forward Leadership Award, which was chosen by a class vote, was presented to class member Kristin Taylor of Cox Communications, Inc. Four graduates were also chosen by class vote to join the Destin Forward Advisory Committee for 3-year terms. Those graduates include Kristen Brannon, Community Bank, Destin; Todd Scali, Easy Street Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals; Taylor; and Jason

34th Annual Destin Seafood Festival Set for Oct. 5-7 Special from the Destin Charter Boat Association The Destin Seafood Festival will take place this October on the beautiful Destin Harbor along our new Harbor Boardwalk. Last year’s festival, organized by the Destin Charter Boat Association and the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, was a huge success and enjoyed great community support. It was, by all accounts, “the Best Seafood Festival Ever, and a huge draw to our community and our local businesses. Last year’s festival was attended by more than 51,000, from locals and visitors to

families and foodies. The Destin Seafood Festival is an annual tradition in one of the panhandle’s most beautiful communities. More than 20 food vendors, most of them favorite local restaurants, present delicious dishes during the 3-day event that centers the Destin Fishing Rodeo in the middle of the action. Dual stages host live entertainment to please every palette‌All local, coastal and regional musicians‌Great food, Great music on the Harbor. Plans are underway for this much

loved Destin fall tradition. This’s year festival will showcase our entire new Harbor Boardwalk and feature even more local seafood restaurants and a vast array of high end arts and crafts. This Festival is only possible with community wide support, from the loyal sponsors and supporters of the Seafood Festival to the businesses and volunteers that make the festival possible with their contributions of time and support. Please plan on supporting this much loved annual event and showcase your business and show your

commitment to our heritage and history on the Harbor with sponsorship, booth space, and featured marketing. Over the next several weeks we will be reaching out to our local community and businesses as we sign on sponsors and volunteer teams for this year’s festival, set for Oct. 5 – 7, 2012. In January, the regional accounting and consulting firm O’Sullivan Creel joined forces with the Birmingham-based firm of Warren Averett and the Montgomery-based firm of Wilson Price to create the Southeast’s premier accounting firm, Warren Averett, LLC. This strategic move takes three significant firms, each a prominent provider in their respective markets, and creates one firm offering expanded reach, resources, services, and expertise, with the same level of personal client service. Combining the

quantity of experience and the quality of expertise results in higher value being provided to all of our clients and the opportunity for our people to apply their talent to a broader base of clients. Along the Gulf Coast, O’Sullivan Creel will operate as Warren Averett O’Sullivan Creel, with Mort O’Sullivan continuing as the managing member. “It’s business as usual for our employees here in our Gulf Coast offices, he said. “I’ve been in this profession 38 years, and I’ve not seen anything as exciting as what

we are undertaking. Warren Averett O’Sullivan Creel continues our commitment to serve the communities where we work and live. The collaboration will also grow services offered in each market beyond

audit and tax, including wealth management, staffing and recruitment, technology consulting and outsourcing, and retirement plan administration and investments. “It’s been exciting, said Lori Kelley, CPA. “We’ve already collaborated on several engagements and proposals and truly combined the best team that could provide the highest level of service. With more than 550 team members and 11 offices spanning from the Tennessee Valley to the Gulf of Mexico, Warren Averett, LLC, ranks among the top 35 firms in the nation and within the top five largest Southeastern firms.
