Shane A. Moody, CCE, 1OM May is usually a busy month for us inside the Chamber office. It’s the month where Seafood Festival really ramps up, Sunset on the Harbor takes place, and the Week of Blessings usually falls in the early part of the month, plus all of our usual activities. Then came the oil spill. Talk about changing the atmosphere. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the people who work in this office with me. They have handled call after call, com-

plaint after complaint, suggestion after suggestion. They’ve handled themselves with dignity, style, and class. We usually average about 130 calls per week from people looking for vacation information. In the two weeks leading up to this writing (May 13), our daily volume has been close to 130. You can learn a lot about people during a crisis. I’ve been amazed watching our city and county leaders respond to the possibility of oil hitting our beaches and waterways. They have been active. They have done a great job sharing information with us, the Chamber, so that we could share it with you. We’ve followed their lead and been there to support them when needed. They’ve done a great job. It’s been interesting to me to watch the cohesiveness of these people. The only con-

A Flurry of Activity

cern they’ve had is doing what needs to be done to protect our shoreline. I had the opportunity to sit in on several meetings. I heard the discussions and watched the interactions. Solutions are what they were after. They put their heads together and worked on what they all thought was the best plan. It was leadership at its best. I thank them for what they’ve done. So, all of this is going on, and we still had to run a chamber of commerce, which takes me back to the group of professionals with whom I work. They’ve done an incredible job. We had the privilege on May 12 to honor 10 graduates of Destin Forward. This was our third class. They were outstanding. They gelled as a group. It was fun for me to watch them grow throughout the year. They had fun, and they learned. And they wanted to learn. Their class

project – a dedication to Leonard Destin – will forever stand on the docks by Royal Melvin Heritage Park. It will have a lasting impression on Destin. It was a crazy month full of activity, both planned and unexpected. I think it is poetic justice that we recognized our most recent class of leadership graduates in a month that current leaders have met a challenge thrown upon them. Working with the current leadership (thank you, Jim, Dino, Greg, Sam, et al) while grooming and honoring the next leaders (way to go, Destin Forward Class of 2010!) is how we’ll continue to build this world-class community one business at a time! With wishes for continued success, and until next month,

A Message from the Chairman of the Board Oil Drilling: Two in the hand vs one in the bush?

Brian Haugen I wrote a guest column in the Northwest Florida Daily News that was published on a Sunday this last March, ironically just a month before the disaster in the Gulf. The intent was to help people – particularly our elected officials – understand the threat that

off shore oil drilling presents to our economy. A segment of the article is as follows: You’ve heard the old phrase “one in the hand, two in the bush?” This, of course, refers to the greed that people face when they see two of something they want versus being thankful for the things they already have, thus risking what you have for something that you want, but may not get. This analogy goes a long way in describing the issue regarding offshore oil drilling off the coast of our great state - except with a twist. See, what we face is an issue of “two in the hand, one in the bush.” The two in the hand, those things we already have, are tourism and military. These

“two in the hand” represent the two largest and most established areas of economic input for our area. The “one in the bush” is the presumption that drilling oil off our shores will lower gas prices, improve our economy, and somehow have no affect on tourism or military operations. As a businessman and investor, I’m not seeing the risk reward here. Immediately following the article, I received a lot of positive response from those concerned about the implications of oil drilling off our shores. I did receive some input from the naysayers as well. Their response tended to be one of three arguments: One, that oil drilling is much more advanced than

it used to be and that the oil platforms don’t present a problem anymore. Hmmm, I guess that argument now speaks for itself. The second reaction I hear is that we’ve reached out to Eglin on several occasions, but we’ve not heard any official response stating that oil drilling negatively affects their mission. Now that is savvy. See, Eglin cannot officially comment on these issues. They, like most of us, cannot speak on behalf of their company – or, in this case, the USAF and the DOD. The third argument is that we need to wean ourselves from foreign oil. This, I totally agree with, but again, I refer to my previous article:

While no one wants to pay high prices at the pump, if we look closely at the facts, we realize that drilling here will do little to nothing to relieve oil costs, but it certainly places at risk our fishing, tourism, and military operations. A recent Florida Senate report concluded that oil reserves in Florida waters will provide less than one week’s worth of oil and have no discernable effect on prices at the pump. Clearly the answer lies in alternative fuel sources, but this takes time – a lot of time. But then again, so does starting to drill in Anwar or opening up the Gulf Range Complex for exploration. One other argument is that drilling off our shores

is somehow good for business, that it will bring in jobs, etc. If this is the last of the big arguments, I feel that can be easily dissuaded by visiting Galveston, Texas. Personally, I feel that the tourism/service and defense-related business we enjoy looks to preserve our coast line better than the special interest groups who represent the Louisiana/Texas coast lines. But those are just my thoughts. Brian Haugen 2010 Destin Area Chamber Chairman of the Board Emerald Coast Wealth Advisors of Raymond James & Associates

Chamber Launches 2nd Annual Thank You Campaign The premise of the Thank You Campaign is simple – offer a sincere thank you to those who choose to spend their vacation and dollars in Destin. The Chamber’s Treasurer Bill Lindsley, Simple HR, came up with this unique concept two summers ago. While having lunch at an area restaurant, he thanked an Arkansas family for choosing Destin for their vacation. Their reaction was overwhelming. As a result of his experience and enthusiasm for the concept, the first Thank You Campaign launched in May 2009 and was a tremendous success. The Chamber heard positive responses from both members and area visitors. Beginning in May, the Chamber will be distributing 250 posters and 500 buttons to Chamber member businesses to help promote the campaign. Participating businesses are asked to put up the posters where they are visible to the public and for frontline employees to wear the buttons. The most important element of the campaign is for all businesses to train their employees to say, “Thank you for visiting Destin. We’re glad you’re here!” For more information, posters, or buttons, please contact Elizabeth Spies at (850) 837-2711 x5 or espies@DestinChamber.com. PAGE 14
