Shane A. Moody, CCE, IOM It’s not new news to you, I’m sure, but 2012 is an election year. We have multiple county seats up for election in both Okaloosa and Walton counties. We have state legislative elections. We have federal elections. 2012 elections are also affected by the census information. With the redistricting of Florida, based on the census results, all seats in the Florida Senate and House are up for election. I thought I’d share some information with you concerning these elections. This information came to me from the Florida Chamber of Commerce. This information was accurate at the time of writing this column. These are not official, but the Florida Chamber believes this includes all candidates at the time of this writing. (DISCLAIMER: This infor-

The Florida Senate: a. 11 Senators term limited out b. 2 open seats c. 27 incumbents running for reelection d. 98 candidates filed– that’s UP from 88 in 2002 e. 48 Republican candidates f. 37 Democrat candidates g. 2 other party and 9 write-in candidates h. Incoming Senate President Don Gaetz has drawn one minor opposition candidate Also in the Senate: a. 8 senate races without opposition b. 3 races with only minor opposition c. 11 Primary Election races and 31 General Election matchups d. There are 28 Republicans in the Florida Senate, and the Florida Chamber team believes Florida will end up with 25-26

Republicans after the November elections. The Florida House: a. 11 Representatives term limited out b. 23 open seats c. 84 incumbents running for reelection d. 306 candidates filed– that’s DOWN from 340 in 2002 e. 149 Republican candidates f. 109 Democrat candidates g. 37 other party Also in the House: a. 30 House races without opposition b. 59 Primary Election races and 74 General Election matchups c. There are 81 Republicans in the Florida House, and the Florida Chamber team believes the Florida House will end up with 76-82 Republicans after the November elections. Due to Florida’s population growth, legislative districts are larger and elections are becoming much more expensive. a. Each of Florida’s 40 Senate seats increased by 70,474 residents and grew from 399,559 residents (2002 – 2012) to

470,033 residents (2012-2022). b. Each of Florida’s 120 House seats increased by 29,494 residents and grew from 133,186 (2002 – 2012) to 156,678 (2002 – 2012). c. Obviously, the cost of conducting mailings, robocalls and targeted television efforts increases with these population changes. d. There are 23 House seats where voter registration is almost equally split. So that’s it from the front lines, from the people who track this daily (and do it masterfully, in my opinion). It should be very interesting to watch. And please, vote in the primaries and the general election. We live in the greatest country in the world, with the greatest freedoms in the world. The privilege to vote is one of those freedoms. Exercise that right! With wishes for continued success, and until next month,

One of the many highlights of this year’s program was the government awareness project in which the Leadership Okaloosa class participated. Throughout the year, class members attended city council, county commission, and school board government meetings in Okaloosa County, sharing what they learned with their peers. The project allowed class members to become better informed of the city and county government issues and witness the leadership roles governmental officials play in the area. The Costa Leadership Institute is currently accept-

ing applications for the 2012-2013 Leadership Okaloosa program. The nine month program is designed to enhance the participant’s leadership skills and provide community awareness. The class meets once a month from September to May and participants receive classroom training by a certified instructor and are given opportunities to interact with various key community leaders throughout the process. A highlight of the program is a two day trip to Tallahassee for the Legislative Day meetings. Tours of area businesses, such as the Northwest Florida Regional Airport and Eglin Air Force Base, provide participants with an understanding of the community. Additionally, each participant takes part in a group project to benefit the participant and the community, while focusing on project management, time management, and team building skills. Tuition for the Leadership Okaloosa program is $900, and applications are due by July 15. Applications are available online at www.nwfsc.edu/LI or by calling (850) 729-6880 or emailing Leadership@NWFSC.edu.

We consider pets to be important caregivers. That’s why cats, dogs and birds are welcome! Older adults receive many benefits from pets, including comfort, companionship and relief from boredom and loneliness. They can enhance quality of life and good health by reducing blood pressure, stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that the ability to care for a pet enhances self-esteem and provides a sense of purpose. Animals bring out our nurturing instinct, make us feel safe and unconditionally accepted.
