Congratulations and Thank You! The Destin Area Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Banquet on Jan. 18. We had a great turnout at a fantastic event.

It was an event that celebrated not only the successes of the Chamber, but the successes of some outstanding individuals who gave of their time and talents over the past year, and even over a career, to the Chamber and the community.

Kathy Whidden of Emerald Coast Chiropractic was awarded the James D. Neilson, Sr., Chairman’s Award for Volunteer Service. This award is chosen by the Chairman of the Chamber Board with input from the Chamber staff. Kathy’s tireless efforts in volunteering at Chamber events were much appreciated.

She organized silent auctions, moved tables and chairs, set up, took down, carried, moved, well, you get the picture. She has donated more door prizes to the Chamber than we could count. She’s helped with registration and check-in at golf tournaments and Chamber lunches. She’s never said no. She truly was the volunteer of the year.

Business Person of the Year was given to Capt. Kelly Windes. This award is voted on by secret ballot of the Board from nominations received from the membership. Everyone knows what Capt. Kelly has done for the fishing industry in Destin and the successes of his multiboat business. But his success goes much deeper than just fishing. He was instrumental in developing the Destin Fisherman’s Cooperative Association to lower the cost of doing business for the fishermen in Destin. He has served on the Destin City Council and was recently elected to the Okaloosa County Commission to represent Destin. His philosophy as a business owner is customer focused, and he always goes the extra step to ensure customer satisfaction. To continue his success the way he has, there’s no doubt why he was selected for this award.

The Ann Gibson Community Service Award was earned by Kim Wintner of Alliance Association Management Co., Inc., an award chosen by secret ballot of the Board from nominations from the Chamber membership. Kim gives tirelessly to the community every day, and his name has become synonymous with the term service. He currently chairs or sits on 10 different boards of directors, including the Chamber’s Military Affairs Council. The Ambassador of the Year is awarded via a point system based on working Chamber events and special projects. And Jennifer is not stopping with this year’s award. She’s already volunteered to pick up in 2013 right where she left off in 2012.

Why Join Your Local Chamber of Commerce?

It is amazing to me that there are Destin businesses out there who are not members of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. I simply cannot fathom anyone in business NOT wanting to be a member. Maybe I’m an easy sell because I often do things simply because they are the right thing to do.

I don’t wait to be or have to be convinced about something that is to me so obvious; sometimes you just know...so you do it. Right! Well, maybe it’s not as obvious to everyone, but for those of you who are already members, I commend you for your membership and outstanding good judgment.

So if it wasn’t the most obvious thing in the world to you, why would you join? Well, the reasons are almost as numerous, it turns out, as the members. The Board of Directors made a list of things that we believe people think that a Chamber should do, plus a separate list of what the Chamber already does. Out of 25 people, did we have two or three ideas? Five to ten? Ten to fifteen? LOL! No, there were at least 30 different and distinct reasons to join the Chamber - many, I must admit, that I wouldn’t have even thought of. It seems likely to me that if we had included more members, we would have had more reasons. Since these were off the top of our heads, I went to the website to include a thorough list. It’s interesting to note, I thought, that the Board of Directors, who are very involved in the Chamber, created a list of Chamber benefits that far exceed what is advertised on the website. In other words, the more you give, the more you get.

Sound familiar?

So, here’s the published list of benefits for a general member: business directory listing in printed guide, business directory listing on website, interaction on social media sites, receive weekly email newsletter, receive monthly printed newsletter, member recognition, free job postings on website, free event listings on website, brochure placement in Chamber’s welcome center, ribbon cutting services, and annual recognition in printed newsletter.

See, I would have went more with the networking opportunities, name recognition, and the ability to affect legislation as a large group. Those are my top three, if I had to choose. I also enjoy dressing up for the Annual Banquet and getting to know and discuss issues with the “movers and shakers” in our area. None of those were even mentioned, nor were so many of the other intangible things listed by the Board of Directors. If anyone is interested, I may still be able to get that entire list.

The Chamber employs a full-time membership consultant. If you need a personal shopper of sorts to give you ideas of what services might most benefit your business, please give us a call at (850) 837-2711 x3. We would also appreciate any leads you might have of your friends who have not yet joined the Chamber, but should be members.

Whatever your reasons, and they are many, belonging to your local area Chamber of Commerce is simply the right thing to do!

Warren Averett Announces Merger Warren Averett, LLC, announced the recent merger of Atlanta-based Gifford, Hillegass & Ingwersen (GH&I) and Tampa-based Pender Newkirk & Company. The merger, effective Jan. 1, helps build a stronger presence for Warren Averett in the Southeast, which will now employ more than 725 team members and serve clients through 14 offices across Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

Kaliski and Zampieri Join HR Management Board Two employees of SimpleHR and SimpleHIRE joined the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Emerald Coast Chapter’s 2013 Board.

Teresa Kaliski, SimpleHR’s human resource administrator, will be the chapter’s membership and at-large director, and Tessa Zampieri, SimpleHIRE’s staffing coordinator, will serve as the diversity director.

Kaliski and Zampieri join the SHRM Board with more than 25 years of combined experience in the human resource industry.

Blue Marlin Realty Group Donates Toys For the second year, Blue Marlin Realty Group has given back to children in need during the holiday season. More than 100 toys were donated to Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast’s Emergency Room this past week with assistance from The Porsche Club of Destin, friends, and family in the community.

Two County Employees Receive HERO Award

Okaloosa County Public Works employees Floyd Spence and Randy Broxson were awarded the HERO award at the Dec. 4 County Commission meeting for their assistance following a two-car incident on May 11. Spence and Broxson, despite their own physical safety, took turns directing traffic around the car accident and assisted the uninjured driver of one car out of danger. At the same time, they took turns applying medical assistance to an injured mother and son.

Fosdyck Named Destin’s Best Financial Planner Cory Fosdyck, CFP®, CIMA®, CRPC®, of Merrill Lynch’s Krueger, Fosdyck, & Associates Team has been named the best Financial Planner on the Emerald Coast, by Destin Magazine.

Originally from central Illinois, Fosdyck completed his bachelor’s degree and graduate studies at Western Illinois University. There, he received his BS in Business and his MBA, while serving as captain of the men’s basketball team. He is currently working on his PhD in behavioral finance.

Bielawski Earns 2012 Top Honors Jerry Bielawski earned the “2012 Top Producer Award” by NewmanDailey Resort Properties, Inc., Real Estate Division. The annual award

recognizes the real estate agent who lists and sells the largest volume of properties within the calendar year. Bielawski achieved top listings for the fourth quarter, top sales and listings for the third quarter, top sales for the second quarter, and top listing agent for the first quarter, which contributed to his overall achievement of the highest volume of sales and listings for the year.

NewmanDailey also honored Colin Kirkwood, who was recognized as “Top Sales Agent for the Fourth Quarter.” He was also the top listing agent for the second quarter.

Destin Forward Environmental Day 2013 On Jan. 8, Destin Forward’s Class of 2013 visited Destin Water Users, Inc., (DWU) reclamation facility on Industrial Park Lane, off of Airport Road. The class listened as DWU’s general manager Richard Griswold, assistant general manager Lockwood Wernet, and lead water operator Judd Mooso explained the process for treating water at the facility, before touring the facility with lead WWTP Operator Terri Steward.

Also visiting with the class that day was Okaloosa County’s beach projects manager Jim Trifilio and Waste Management’s senior district manager Domenica Farmer.

The Destin Forward program uses a hands-on approach to its in-depth study of the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village. Applications for the Class of 2014 will be available in May.
