Destin Area Chamber Named Certified Chamber of Commerce The Destin Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce it received its Certified Chamber of Commerce designation from the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP), during the organization’s annual meeting, held recently at the Royal Plaza Disney in Orlando. “Our Board has put tremendous amounts of work into making sure our Chamber is operating at the highest standards in the industry. The Board members

understand that to provide the best Chamber for our members, we must achieve the highest levels of standards. This certification shows they’ve accomplished that,” explained Chamber president and CEO Shane Moody. The Certified Chamber of Commerce designation is voluntary, and a Chamber must complete a thorough application process, where it must prove it adheres to FACP’s highest standards. Chambers must

Time to Look Inside Your Business Shane A. Moody, CCE, 1OM As we draw near the end of 2010 and the holiday season approaches, there are many conversations about the economy. Many questions remain about when, how, what, where, etc., the economy will begin its turn-around. Those same questions are there when discussions turn to jobs and employment. So what happens when the economy does make that turn? Can it be business as usual for our members, or even for our Chamber? Those are some of the items that were discussed at

our Board retreat in early November. Your Board of Directors, under the guidance of 2011 Chairman Mike Freeman of Whitney National Bank, looked long and hard at your Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. The process has begun to examine the relevance of the Chamber’s programs, products, and services. There were great discussions about how we could improve what we do. There were discussions about how much our business community will need us as we move forward. We discussed where we were as an organization and where we need to go. Self-evaluation is sometimes a difficult thing, especially when you’re honest with your-

We have to be more involved. We have to bring ourselves back. Start now to prepare for the economic bounce-back. You want to be out in front when the tides turn. Embrace your staff. Embrace your business. Embrace improvement and change. Embrace local businesses, and shop and buy locally. Together we can control our direction. That’s what your Chamber is all about. And together, we can continue to build this world-class community one business at a time. With wishes for continued success, and until next month,

self during the process. You have to be willing to accept changes, large or small, easy or difficult, if you truly want to be better. Have you done this with your business? It has been a long while since businesses in the Destin area have faced what we’ve faced the past couple of years. I believe we will come out of this a little stronger, a little better, a little more knowledgeable. Those are all good things to be. And if we take an honest approach to improving the Destin area, how much better will we all be? Now is the time to prepare for the future. We can’t sit idly by and hope the turnaround happens – we have to make it happen. We have to become more innovative.

NETWORK DECEMBER 2010

A Message from the Chairman of the Board

Brian Haugen As we come to the close of the year, please allow me to elucidate over the good times, as well as some of the difficulties, we’ve faced together in 2010. First the difficulties: The worst oil spill to hit the Gulf of Mexico in

history stole our summer tourism, yet spared our beaches. We survived the media negativity, united as a community. As is often the case with tragedies, I feel it helped to bring us all together and showed our collective, community spirit. The double dip recession: The rest of the country may not have it, but we did. It seemed like just as we were beginning to head in the right direction, the oil well exploded. Again, tough times, and again we prevailed. In fact, we saw more innovative diversity of businesses within our economy as many struggled to get by. The by-product? Prob-

Weighing the Good and the Bad ably a more robust and diverse business climate in Destin. Now for the good stuff: We interfaced with more politicians, government officials, other chambers, the TDC, and the EDC, as well as BP executives, than imaginable. Our Board voted on resolutions opposing near and off shore oil drilling. Our campaign to focus 2010 as “The Year of the Member” was successful, as we had an increase of new members year over year! We graduated 10 local members from our Destin Forward program. Our business to busi-

ness lunch was a start up that worked well, helping to network businesses who may not have the time to attend the breakfast, and each month we gave out the greatest door prize ever sought in Destin - a free membership renewal to the Chamber! We won the beach restoration lawsuit and began the process of getting some much needed sand on Holiday Isle. We were able to enjoy some great concerts, as our area became the hosts to groups like the Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Starship, and Loverboy. Oh, and by the way, our Chamber was honored

to earn the designation as a Certified Chamber through the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP)! Within our own Chamber membership, we were honored to have representation to the Florida Chamber Board by Kevin Bowyer of O’Sullivan Creel, LLP; our own Chamber President and CEO Shane Moody was elected Chairman of the FACP; and Board member Jim Breitenfeld was honored with the “Life Member Award for the FACP.” Jeffrey Gitomer once said, “Business success is survival. The wellprepared are most likely to

survive, the best-prepared are most likely to win.” After the trials and tribulations of 2010, I feel that the lessons we learned have better prepared us for the challenges of tomorrow. Your Chamber has created a vehicle that will continue to work for you and your business so that we may all prosper as we go forward into 2011. Thanks for the opportunity to be Chairman – it was an honor. God speed! Brian Haugen 2010 Destin Area Chamber Chairman Emerald Coast Wealth Advisors of Raymond James & Associates

Breitenfeld Receives FACP Lifetime Member Award

In his first duty as FACP chairman Shane Moody (right) recognizes outgoing chairman Troy McLellan, president of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber, with a plaque.

Moody Installed as Chairman of State Association Destin Area Chamber president and CEO Shane Moody, CCE, IOM, took over the chairmanship of the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP) during its annual meeting, held in October at the Royal Plaza Disney in Orlando. “When your peers recognize you as the person they think can positively lead a statewide organization, it’s truly an honor. I look forward to working with the chambers of commerce in Florida, and hopefully we can continue to build the best state organization in the country. It’s an exciting opportunity,” said Moody, who has more than 17 years of experience in the chamber profession. In addition to his involvement with FACP, Moody has served on the Florida Chamber of Commerce Federation Advisory Board and Board of Governors and currently serves the Quality of

Life Caucus for the Florida Chamber Foundation; the US Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of 100; the Board of Regents for the Winter Institute for the US Chamber; and as a faculty member for the US Chamber’s Institute for Organization Management. He has previously served on the boards and executive committees for the National Association for Membership Development and the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) and chaired the Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Professionals. He earned his IOM designation when he graduated from the US Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organization Management in 2003. In August 2007, he earned his professional certification, Certified Chamber Executive from ACCE, the highest individual designation in the chamber profession.

Celebrating Ambassador Successes PAGE 12

The Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP) recently recognized Jim Breitenfeld with its Lifetime Member Award for his outstanding service to the profession and his community. The honor was presented at FACP’s annual meeting, held at the Royal Plaza Disney in Orlando. “It was a surprise and a real honor to be recognized by your peers for the work you have done for over 30 years. I am not a real big award guy, but this was very special,” said Breitenfeld. “Chambers and other community development organizations do make difference, and it is nice to be a part of that.” Breitenfeld’s chamber career began in 1977 as president of the Greater Manchester (CT) Chamber of Commerce, where he founded the East of the Rivers Chamber of Commerce Association. Two years later, he became president of the Pinellas Suncoast (FL) Chamber of Commerce, a role he held for 10 years. During that time, he served a term as FACP president. In 1989, his career transitioned to economic development, as he took the helm of the Economic Development Council of Okaloosa County. From

1996 - 2000, he was senior vice president of Enterprise Florida and served as president of the Florida Economic Development Council in 1994 – 95. He moved on to executive vice president of economic development of the Knoxville Area (TN) Chamber of Commerce. He now serves as the president of his own company, Breitenfeld Development Services, LLC, and sits on the boards of directors for the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. “When you look at lifetime achievement in this industry, there’s no doubt Jim deserved this award. His reputation in the state of Florida is very strong. I’ve been asked numerous times by people across the state about him, which tells you he built a respected and integrity-filled career in chamber of commerce and economic development work. He’s been valuable to me as mentor and coach with insight you can only receive from someone with his experience. It was honor to be there to see him receive this award,” said Shane Moody, president and CEO of the Destin Area Chamber.

Destin Area Chamber Donates $11,000 to Area Non-Profits During its Nov. 12 breakfast meeting, the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce presented $11,000 in donations to area non-profits, which included a $5,500 donation to the Destin Fisherman’s Fund. The donations were due to the success of the 32nd Annual Destin Seafood Festival, the community event of which the Destin Area Chamber is the official organizer. Exact donations given to each non-profit organization were based on the number of people and hours the organization dedicated to assisting in the festival’s token and admission booths, with a matching donation going to the Destin Fisherman’s Fund. “Without the fishing fleet, the fishermen, and their wives, there would be no Seafood Festival. In times like these, when our economy has been hit by so many different challenges putting so many hard-working people at risk of losing
