Destin Forward Studies Tough Issues During November Class By Kristy Davies, Communications Intern

When cars are gridlock on U.S. Highway 98 with no end in sight, it’s hard to believe that widening the four-lane highway is not the answer. Road infrastructure is just part of the economic development of Destin, as the Destin Forward class learned last month during Economic Development Day at the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. “Transportation is difficult,” said Jim Wood of the Okaloosa Walton Transportation Planning Organization and City of Destin councilperson, during a presentation to the class. “Transportation is a quality of life issue. For businesses, traffic is good. If you’re a retiree, traffic is not good. But it’s more than just automobiles.” Wood explained that the solution involved “multi-modal” transportation. Creating roads with wide sidewalks and bike paths helps get cars off of the road. Public transit would also alleviate congestion, as well as creating alternate routes for locals to bypass the major highways, like U.S. Highway 98. “It’s interesting that the thing people complain about the most – traffic – has the fewest realistic solutions,” said Todd Scali of Easy Street Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals and a member of Destin Forward. Over the course of a day, the class welcomed guests from other companies and organizations to speak about economic development. See FORWARD on page 7

Shane A. Moody, CCE, IOM As each year counts down toward the end, I always try to reflect back on the year that was and share some things with you. 2011 is coming to a close, and 2012 is peeking its head around the corner. So to recap, I’m doing something a little different. I’m going back to these columns from the past year and sharing with you thoughts that were written here. Not all months had something worth repeating, but many did. Here are some of those. JANUARY – “We’ve just come out of our board retreat. We’re taking a

long, hard look at our programming and how we can change it for the better. We’re looking at new opportunities. We’re going to make some difficult decisions, but decisions that will make your chamber better.” I think this was prophetic. We worked with the Charter Boat Association to pass the Seafood Festival to them, and I think we can all say that was a success. We also converted our breakfast to a lunch, which also proved positive. Attendance at lunch was up 35% over breakfasts. APRIL – “How about a new twist on Sunset on the Harbor? Okay, then. We’re going to build a half-day corporate fishing tournament into the event. We’ll be leaving on two party boats from behind Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant at the Fishing Fleet Marina for a six hour fishing trip. The boats will leave at noon and return

at six. We’ll give prizes to the teams with the best catches and to the individuals as well. Stay tuned to how you can register your four-person and twoperson teams, and even be a boat sponsor. When the boats return, Sunset on the Harbor will be in full swing with a fish fry and cold beverages for all. We’re continuing to work on some other activities as well. And a very special thank you goes to Mike Freeman and Whitney Bank for their corporate sponsorship of Sunset on the Harbor! Again, stay tuned for all the details taking place on May 13. Mark your calendars.” JUNE - “As summer arrives, it is so pleasing to see the smiles on the faces of so many business owners in our community, especially the resort management and accommodations companies! All indications are the summer looks very strong. We need it. Be

sure to thank all of our visitors when they visit your business. Thank them for choosing Destin as their vacation destination. They have other choices.” This is something we should always remember! JULY – “At a recent Harbor CRA board meeting, the board voted to begin the process of obtaining easements for the construction of the boardwalk, making the harbor waterfront a customer friendly, contiguous walkway. It would join the west end of the harbor at Harborwalk Village to the east end, initially through to the Destin Yacht Club. We’ve talked in many meetings with the city and in separate conversations with harbor property owners and it appears that most will sign their easements. I must give a lot of credit to the chamber’s harbor committee and its chairman, Mary Anne Windes, for working this

PRESIDENT continued from page 3 so hard. We’ve never been this close to constructing the boardwalk – the plan is to begin construction in November and to complete it before spring break 2012. It’s hard to believe we are actually going to see construction on this project! AUGUST – “But in the wake of continuing our tourism promotion campaigns, we can’t forget one need for our community, economic diversification. Many have taken the chamber’s desire for economic diversification as a move from tourism. This couldn’t be further from

the truth. The Destin Area Chamber knows and understands that first and foremost, Destin is worldclass community and family resort area. We love that about our community. We will continue to promote that. In addition, Sen. Don Gaetz worked tirelessly to obtain $30 million for Northwest Florida to help us with economic development. The bill calls for $10 million per year for three years, with the money being used as a “closing fund. Will we be able to benefit from this opportunity? Stay tuned! But most importantly, they understand themselves, the way they react to all of the above, and their role in each situation. Can leadership be taught? Can leadership be learned? Or is leadership something that comes from within based on life experiences and the way you handle them? I’m not sure the answers to those questions, but I do believe each individual would answer

NETWORK DECEMBER 2011

Non-Profit Spotlight Feline Friends of Destin, Inc. Feline Friends of Destin (FFOD) is the only local 501 (c3) nonprofit organization in the City of Destin whose main mission is feral cat rescue to improve the lives of stray and feral cats through Trap-NeuterReturn-Maintain (TNR), in addition to the rescue of cats and kittens for socialization/ adoption through a team of all-volunteer members. Without a physical shelter, the group utilizes the adoption center space at PetSmart in Destin to showcase its homeless cats and kittens ready for adoption. It also provides a network of volunteers to foster cats/kittens, provide TNR trapping services, maintain feral cat feeding stations throughout the Destin area, fundraise for the group, and maintain a much-needed service and presence in the community. Cat lovers unite! FFOD was formed more than 15 years ago by a group of concerned local community members to help humanely control the feral cat population in Destin. The group works closely with national group, Alley Cat Allies (www.alleycat.org). In addition to an annual contract and funding with the City of Destin for humane feral cat trapping and sterilization (TNR), the group also raises additional funds for much-needed cat rescue and adoption services in the Destin area. FFOD works closely in collaboration with three local area vets in Destin - Cat Clinic of Destin, Airport Vet, and Village Vet - to provide sterilization/screening/ rabies shots for feral cats, and full vet care for other cats in its care with the aim of socialization/adoption. The successful close working relationship with PetSmart Inc. in Destin through the PetSmart Charities program has allowed the group to showcase cats and receive much-needed support and NETWORK DECEMBER 2011

supplies through this corporate charitable partnership. FFOD has greatly increased the team in recent months, adding many more foster home volunteers and those donating their time to helping out at their adoption center space at PetSmart in Destin. The adoption center is manned by volunteers four hours on weekdays and from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekends/holidays. Potential adopters can also request specific appointment times. The TNR program needs additional volunteers from the community to be trained in the trapping of feral kittens/cats. A regularly-scheduled feral cat trapping night is organized each month to recruit new volunteers, extend the network and educate the community. Feline Friends of Destin welcomed in new board members and bid a fond farewell to prior president, Anne Herriott, this past summer. The new board members are as follows: Bob Reid (president), Rachel Simerly (vice-president), Ashley Tuxhorn (secretary), Heather Arthur (treasurer), Linda Hodges (TNR coordinator), Cherie Lane (adoption center coordinator), and Jeremy Keich (legal council). FORWARD continued from cover “This year we’ve seen more interest in Northwest Florida,” said Sandy Sims, spokeswoman for Gulf Power, who talked about the company’s economic development initiatives. “We do have challenges, but they are not insurmountable.” To kick off the day, Don Kirkman, president of Florida’s Great Northwest, talked about his organization and its mission. Florida’s Great Northwest represents 16 Florida panhandle counties to support companies evaluating the area as a possible business location. “If we’re successful in creating jobs and bringing in new businesses,” said Kay Rasmussen, vice president of community and economic development for the Okaloosa County Economic Development Council, “then the cities garner the tax base. We are targeting technology and high-wage jobs.” Presenting slides outlining what the mission of the EDC is; Rasmussen explained the organization’s goals and limitations. “We look at what’s good today and won’t hamper future development,” she said. “And it’s not just bringing in jobs, we work to retain jobs.” Rasmussen ended her presentation talking about the Emerald Coast Technology and Research Center that will be constructed at the University of Florida campus in the Shalimar area. “I liked Kay’s presentation,” said Joey Peters of Alliance Association Management and a Destin Forward class member. “It’s good to know there are groups out there that recruit businesses and are looking out for our area as a whole.” Before closing the day with Wood’s presentation, the students of the Destin Forward class learned about the Mid-Bay Bridge Authority, the building of the bridge, and the Authority’s current, ongoing project: the Mid-Bay Bridge Connector. “It’s 11 miles the entire route,” said Jim Vest, director of the Mid-Bay Bridge Authority, as he pointed to an image of the proposed route on a projected slide. “People traveling from Interstate-10 won’t have to stop until Danny Wuerrfel Way. It avoids 13 stop lights in Niceville. The connector is a great improvement and will save time.” Already under construction, the Mid-Bay Bridge Connector will bypass the City of Niceville by routing traffic around Rocky Bayou and connecting at State Road 285 and at SR 85. The toll road will cross five streams and three overpasses. “The bridges had to be designed not to be in the creek because of the endangered darter (fish),” Vest said, as he explained the entire route with photos. “The construction has created 70 to 80 jobs.” Vest explained how the connector is being built in three phases and the impact it will have on the community. “The Mid-Bay Bridge enhanced Destin and boosted growth,” Vest added. “The connector will provide quick access to Destin and alleviate traffic congestion in Niceville.” At the end of the day, the Destin Forward participants had a lot of information to digest. “This class brought my knowledge up to speed,” said Mike West, recreation assistant for the City of Destin. “Gulf Power blew my mind by how much they’re involved; not just a power company.” “Everything is connected, from economic development councils to transportation, said Scali. “It’s mind-boggling.” PAGE 7

Member Spotlight Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology By Kristy Davies, Communications Intern Antiaging and fighting acne are not all Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology is about. Coastal Skin offers medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology services, including laser skin resurfacing and skin cancer treatment in its offices in Miramar Beach and Fort Walton Beach. “Skin cancer will affect one in five Americans during their lifetime and more than two million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year alone,” said Dr. David C. Adams of Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology. “When it comes to skin cancer, it’s important to know what to look for so you can detect a skin cancer at its earliest stages.” Skin cancer, although one of the most preventable types of cancer, is one of the most easily treated – and cured.

SMALL BUSINESS WORKSHOP

At Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology, Adams and his skilled staff utilize Mohs micrographic surgery, which remains the “gold standard” of treating many types of cancer. Mohs surgery involves removing the cancer in successive layers of skin until microscopic examination no longer reveals cancer cells, Adams said. “When performed by a Fellowshiptrained Mohs surgeon, Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate and preserves as much healthy skin as possible,” said Adams, “while effectively removing the skin cancer.” Adams is a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgeons (FACMS), a professional qualification. If someone were to notice a new lesion or a change in an existing lesion, Adams advises seeking attention immediately. He also added that early diagnosis and expert treatment offer the best chance for a cure. Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology also offers a variety of skin products and treatments. To schedule an appointment or for more information, visit www. coastalskinsurgery.com or call (850) 6543376. Same day appointments are always available!
