Shane A. Moody, 1OM, CCE I’m writing this on March 5, a few weeks before it actually makes it to you in PROGRESS. As I look at the month of March, I see rapidly changing times ahead. By the time you read this, the City of Destin will have a new mayor and three new council members, or at least two new members and one just re-elected. We’ll probably have a new representative in the Florida House of Representatives, filling the seat left vacant by Ray Sansom’s resignation. The direction we move as a community and as a state will be affected by both of

these elections. I want to thank all of you who have contacted our representatives, senators, and our governor in opposition of oil drilling in state waters. I know you’ve emailed and called because I’ve heard from some of those you’ve contacted. It takes grassroots efforts, such as this, to state our case. It remains to be seen if our voices were heard. Your Chamber continues to stand behind its resolution opposing drilling up to 40 miles out. I want to thank you for continuing to participate in our events. The threechamber expo in partnership with the Greater Fort Walton Beach and Niceville Valparaiso chambers of commerce was hugely successful. This was our third year, and the compliments and kudos are stronger and more positive than ever. I also want to thank the partnering chambers for their cooperation in making this event such a huge success. We’ll continue to plan several joint events each year. I believe this business expo

will become a definite on our calendars. Restaurant Week was a great success. We received many positive comments from participating restaurants. We’ve even heard from some who dined during the week and enjoyed the special menus. Look for another Restaurant Week in October. We gave away our first free membership at our Leads Lunch in February. Congratulations to Emerald Coast Chiropractic for winning. You can win a free membership for a year too. Just attend our monthly Leads Lunch the third Wednesday of each month. Who knows, maybe you’ll be lucky and have your business card drawn. The ‘Year of the Member’ is in full swing! The year is progressing nicely. New members are joining, current members are renewing, and we’re working harder than ever to bring you more value for your investment in our organization. Feel free to call any of the great Chamber staff if you have questions

or comments about anything. Maybe by the time you read this we will have announced our plans for the Seafood Festival. We’re very excited about our plans. If you don’t know yet, it won’t be long! Our spring golf tournament is on April 16 at Emerald Bay. Contact us for more information. As I close, I want to thank you again. You are the reason this Chamber is successful. As we move toward recovery from the recession of the last few years, I remind you and ask you to shop locally. We have great members and great businesses who sell any and everything you could want. Buy from them. Support the local economy. That’s how we’ll work together to build this world-class community one business at a time. With wishes for continued success, and until next month,

A Message from the Chairman of the Board Forecast for an Economic Warming Trend…

Brian Haugen As spring begins to finally work its way into our well-deserved and chilly Emerald Coast, so too should the tourism business begin to thaw out as well. The much deserved and highly anticipated spring comes with renewed hope for a broader-based eco-

nomic warming trend. Already we see indications of an improving economic cycle with Chamber members and their businesses. Take for example O’Sullivan Creel, LLP, (www.osullivancreel.com) and its expansion. Just after the completion of OSC’s recently built office space for the Fort Walton Beach location, it just announced its expansion to the west – adding a new location on the Eastern Shore community of Fairhope, Ala. Congratulations OSC! One of our newer business members, Rick Scali of East Street Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals, is 100% booked for the season. Rick’s unique approach of marketing ‘pet-friendly’ va-

cation rentals appears to be a big hit along the Emerald Coast. You can check out his website at www.easystreetvacationrentals.com. Ironically, as I sit at my desk looking out over our beautiful Harbor area and the Gulf of Mexico, I see a great signal of seasonal reversal…. the first parasail of the season! Although you couldn’t pay me to get near the still chilly waters of the Gulf just yet, I’m sure our snowbirds are enjoying their new ‘wings,’ while enjoying a ride with the crew of Just Chute Me! Visit www.parasaildestin. com. Speaking of tourism and vacationers, if you didn’t get a chance to check out HarborWalk Village

during Mardi Gras, you missed one heck of a party! You’ve got to hand it to Legendary, Inc., and crew (or, perhaps Krewe?!), they really know how to make an event a party. You can check out their upcoming events by visiting www. harborwalkdestin.com. Regarding membership, events, and promotions, your Destin Area Chamber of Commerce continues to work diligently during these difficult times to help you maximize your membership dollars – and it’s working. Did you know that we give away an annual Chamber membership as a door prize once a month at our Monthly Leads Lunch? This event, held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month,

will next be at Outback Steakhouse in April – don’t miss it! Congratulations to Emerald Coast Chiropractic (www.destinchiropractor. com) for winning the first membership! Lastly, I’d like to say a special “thank you” to John and Colleen Riddle of Elite Physique Personal Training, (www.newmommymakeover.com). They sent a special note to the Board of Directors explaining why they were keeping and expanding upon their membership because of the business and benefits they receive through their investment. Just remember though, it’s what you put into your membership that earns you the business and benefits. John and Colleen

are very active, involved, and personable. You guys are the good businessmen – we just provide the conduit. So, take advantage of your membership in the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events! You can check them out at www. destinchamber.com/calendar. 2009 Destin Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Report Thank You for a Wonderful Year

Karen McCarthy

In October, I really had a hard time realizing that my year was coming to an end in just a few short months. I wasn’t letting go. For those of you who know me, you know that I am passionate about things I do and love. I take a commitment seriously and never waiver. It doesn’t matter whether it is family, PROGRESS APRIL 2010

friends, work, or community service. I am there; I am dedicated. So, why was it hard? I am not sure, but it hit me like a ton of bricks when I realized, “I am done.” I guess it did help that my good friend and incoming Chairman Brian Haugen told me I was the lame duck! Funny phrase, but it was all so true. My reign was over. It was a challenging year for most people, as well as for the Chamber. We maintained membership, we kept our bottom line in the black, and we had many successes. How did we accomplish this? Commitment and staying engaged! I am very proud of the each and every Board mem-

ber this year. They made the commitment to stay engaged at last year’s retreat, and they did. They were more visible to the membership and attended more Chamber functions. They passed resolutions in support and opposition of federal, city, and county issues; some resolutions were popular and some were not too well liked, but they did the right thing for the Chamber. They created programs – the Thank You campaign, Sunset on the Harbor, Leaders in Business Lunch, the Seafood Festival Golf Classic, and the Sport Commission, just to name a few. They supported the membership, the staff, and the Chamber. What

more could a Chairman ask for? I can’t think of anything; I just want to thank them for making my job easier! The backbone of the any organization is the staff, and I am here to tell you the staff of the Destin Area Chamber is one the most proficient groups of people I have had the pleasure to work with in many years. Thank you for a great year, and thank you for your patience and understanding. You worked hard to achieve the many goals the Board put forth. The Chamber’s success is your success! Elizabeth, Risa, Wendy, and Sandi, congratulations on a job well done! Shane, you are guided by the Board, you have your

hands on the pulse of the city, county, and state, and you do your job and do it well. Your leadership and professionalism are recognized by many in the city, county, and state. Continue to channel your skills and talents to make the Destin Area Chamber the best it can be. I have greatly enjoyed my year as the Chairman, and it was my pleasure working with you. My heart felt gratitude to my staff at Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union. You picked up the slack when I was busy doing my Chamber duties as Chairman. Your support, encouragement, and understanding go beyond me just saying

thank you! To my CEO Jim Mitchell and Sr VP Royas Sanders, thank you for recognizing the value of allowing me to be Chairman of the Destin Area Chamber this year. To my many friends and family, thank you for listening to me and giving me your time. There are so many people who have helped me this year. I wish I could thank you individually, but you know who you are and you know how much I appreciate you! Best wishes and much success in 2010!
