How Do You Think About the Chamber? Being over 900 members strong, we often hear the many reasons businesses become members of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce. Being over 900 members strong, those reasons easily are more than 900. While the basic reasons are often the same, digging deeper into “why join” brings out very true and substantial reasoning. We hear the same things from many of you: networking, inexpensive advertising, business exposure, etc. And those are the basic benefits you receive. Those are also the most commonly known benefits. Again, digging deeper into the benefits finds values that are often overlooked. We certainly think, internally at least, that the surface benefits provide tremendous value to you as a member. When you attend a networking event, say a Leaders in Business Lunch or Business After Hours, you have an opportunity to meet hundreds of others looking for the same benefit you are – new people! They’re in attendance; you simply have to network to find them. We also understand that time is a very valuable commodity these days, and we don’t want you to become caught up in the “if I don’t make it to the event, what happens” mindset.

We do so much that doesn’t require time away from your business or family, and we want you to remember those. There are numerous advertising opportunities – the NETWORK newsletter you’re reading now, the Chamber membership directory, our lobby advertising display, the website and e-newsletter, sponsoring the golf tournament, or other events. These allow you to put your business name in front of thousands of people, and you never have to leave your office to do so.

Ken Wampler, Vice Chairman/Membership Development Newman-Dailey Resort Properties, Inc.

But we can dig even deeper than that. Our Destin Forward Class of 2013 is approaching graduation. They’ve been through eight months of community education. They’ve been face-toface with the movers and shakers in Destin, from the fishing fleet and historians to the rodeo docks for weigh-ins, from tourism powerhouses to experts on the waterways. They’ve learned from city government officials. They’ve met with non-profit organizations and have a better understanding of Destin’s needs. They’ve been to Tallahassee and visited with those in state government. In essence, they’ve grown as professionals and as future leaders for our community. They’ll graduate in May and really begin the journey to make our community a better place.

Acentria, Inc.

The next class will begin in late August, and there’s a place for you or one of your employees. It’s a one-of-a-kind professional development opportunity. And it’s just one more of the benefits your membership affords you. So, back to the title of this column, how do you think of the Chamber? We want you think about us as the leading business development organization in the Destin area. After all, who else can bring together so many business leaders at one time for the betterment of all? We want you to think of us as the leader in community and economic development in the Destin area. After all, who else affects the business climate and economy more that we do on a daily basis? Who else provides you with programs, such as Destin Forward, to teach you and your employees the key points and issues Destin needs to address to be the ultimate place to live, work and play? We want you to change your thinking to this: We Are Your Target Market! The Destin Area Chamber of Commerce provides the access, opportunities, and relationships you need to be successful. We put more businesses and consumers in touch with each other than any other organization in Destin. We’re here for you, our members, so let us be your target market, whether you’re business to business, business to consumer, or business to tourist.

Destin Area Chamber - Making It Happen As things happen in our great city, the Chamber is everpresent. We are so fortunate to have a progressive thinker, like Shane Moody, as our CEO. Not only can he strategize to make Destin a better place to work, live, and play, but he also has a talent for assembling the right people for the job. Check my facts by looking at the Chamber staff and the Board of Directors. I’m the luckiest Chamber President ever - what a great team we have, and all of us are looking out for the best interests of our members. If there is more we can do, please let me know. We’re here for you! You’ve probably seen us the most in The Destin Log championing the Destin area for economic development. We aspire to join forces with the EDC and the City of Destin to diversify our market. We’re not looking to bring more of the same or businesses that will compete with the fine businesses we already have; we’re looking to bring diverse, quality businesses who will hire local talent, make Destin their home base, and keep the dollars circulating in Destin rather than being sent back to a home office out of the area. In this same light, we’re also teaming with the other three Okaloosa chambers - FWB, Niceville, and Crestview - and the EDC to increase the momentum of our Six Pillars program, which will benefit our entire county. It’s a big, but worthwhile, initiative. We are also working with the neighboring chambers to put the right people in place to make suggestions to the Okaloosa County Commissioners as to how the RESTORE Act money could best serve our area. This is a once in a lifetime shot, and we need to maximize our county’s benefit with long-range thinking. Our Chamber has recognized and approved Jim Breitenfeld as our top choice and the most qualified to make these decisions on our behalf. I read in The Destin Log last week that the Destin City Council is hearing thoughts regarding revisions to the Tier 3 development process. I’m bringing that to our Chamber Board of Directors, and I’ll be at that meeting on March 25 at City Hall. Input welcomed. Enough of the work, let’s talk about having some fun. On April 17, the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce is having another epic event: Golf & Dine at the Indian Bayou Country Club, starting at 1 p.m. If you golf, assemble a team, and have some fun. If you don’t golf, join me at the Clubhouse. There’s no telling what kind of mischief we can find, but I know it will be fun. I look forward to seeing you there. So, we’ve covered work and play, let’s talk about the third leg of our stool. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 8, and bring your entire office for the Blessing of the Marketplace. This event is hosted by The Church of Destin, Inc., a non-profit organization comprised of the clergy of 17 local churches with the motto of “One Church - Many Congregations.” Never has an event been so powerful as when the combined prayer power of all these churches lays a blessing on you, your business, and our marketplace. The event starts at 11 a.m., at the Destin Life Center at 200 Beach Drive, and lunch is provided. You are also invited to attend the Blessing of the Fleet on Thursday, May 9, at the Destin Fishing Fleet Marina at 4 p.m. Boats are available for you to ride and participate in this event. I hope you are enjoying the wild success of another season in Destin, Florida! If your Chamber can be of assistance to you, please don’t hesitate to call on us.

The People’s Choice Award was given to Ray Yantch, first place to Candy Pate, second place to Rick Henson, and third place to Kathy Mauck. Restaurants also participated. First place was given to Harry T’s Lighthouse Restaurant, second place to Crab Island Cantina, and third place to Emerald Grande’s Grande Vista Bar and

As the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) turns 18, it is adapting to serve the region’s needs and growth, and, as such, it is fitting that the organization evolve its brand. In late February, MKAF unveiled a new logo. The new design reflects a more sophisticated look, while building upon the playful color palate for which MKAF has become known. The design embraces the organization’s initials, shortening

the lengthy foundation name. The new MKAF design also helps to differentiate the organization from its art alliance partner, the Mattie Kelly Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College, which also honors Mattie Kelly, but is a separate entity from MKAF.

Destin Seafood Festival Call to Artists: Heritage on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk The theme of the 35th Annual Destin Seafood Festival – ‘Heritage on the Harbor’ – celebrates the festival’s location, right on the Destin harbor, among its docks, charter boats, and fishermen.
