Planning should be fun. I’ll say it again. Planning should be fun. It is an opportunity for you and your betrothed to work in unison as you discover the perfect destination, honeymoon locale, invitation designs and such. What you’re planning is merely a party to celebrate your union. Yes, it’s a milestone. Yes, it’s important. But it shouldn’t feel like work or worse – stress you out. Of course it helps to be organized and have the details in place in order to have the flawless wedding day you envision, but as you plan, take a moment and remember you’re only engaged for a short time, therefore your preparations should be fun and exciting. another planet. An absolute must is a pit-stop by the awesome and authentic dinosaur tracks deep within the canyon. The resort’s stables are a true show stopper. Amy Wilkinson, the Equestrian Manager, is a gentle soul who brings out the best in her horses. Even the most novice of riders will become at-ease with the experts. Take to the air with Gateway’s scenic air tours, a sure-fire way to grasp the immense beauty of this place. Looking to stay more grounded? The resort recently launched their “Driven Experiences” program. After working with a professional instructor, get behind the wheel of a baja-style race truck for a fast and furious race through the landscape. After so much outdoor adventure, your room will be a welcome respite. With high ceilings, stunning hand-crafted details and one of the most comfortable beds you’ll ever sleep in, you might rethink that fifteenth scheduled activity and opt for staying in to cuddle in front of the fire. Private patios and two-bedroom casitas, opening summer 2013, are perfect for destination wedding crowds and will serve as a home away from home. With so much to do, don’t forget to take a moment with the one you love to simply sit in the shadows of the surrounding mountains. Soak it all in, because Gateway Canyons is one of those places which is uniquely removed and truly one-of-a-kind.

The setting you select for your destination wedding is like the artist’s canvas, providing rich inspiration for you to build on as you meld your personal touches with the unique aspects of the location. Inspiration abounds and the spirit of the West is alive and well at the Lodge and Spa at Brush Creek Ranch, located in the wide open spaces of southern Wyoming.

In winter or summer, this 15,000-acre working cattle ranch is the perfect setting for creating lasting memories with family and friends. Where else can you host a poker tournament or Karaoke contest in a western style saloon, or treat your groomsmen to a guided fishing expedition all on the same day? Snowshoeing through pristine snow, sitting around the warmth of a fire pit or sharing a sumptuous meal in the elegantly appointed lodge are all opportunities for bonding at its finest. The accommodations are both rustic and first class, with warm touches inspired by the natural setting. The Caribbean is made up of thousands of islands which boast friendly locals, palm trees and stunning, sandy beaches. When it comes to choosing a destination for your wedding or honeymoon, it’s important to do your research as each Caribbean island maintains its own distinct flair. St. Maarten is one such island that has all the gorgeousness typical of the Caribbean, but with some unique and fun attributes. Located in the Netherlands Antilles, the island is split: one part Dutch and one part French. A ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH A DESTINATION WEDDING SPECIALIST By Jennifer Stein

Couples have many preconceived notions when it comes to getting married away from home. Before you dismiss it because your well-meaning aunt gave you an earful of incorrect information, consider the point of view of an expert. Our friends at All About Honeymoons and Destination Weddings help couples get down the destination aisle every day and know a thing or two about what really happens. Jackie Waechter, Romance Specialist and award-winning franchise owner at All About Honeymoons, answers some direct questions to bust some myths about doing a destination wedding.

Q: Will it cost more to have my wedding away from home? JW: No, actually it will most likely cost quite a bit less. First of all, you will likely have fewer guests attend because you’re doing a destination wedding. Also, many resorts offer complimentary or low cost weddings when you are staying at the resort. You can also combine the wedding and honeymoon into one trip and get the most "bang for your buck!"

Q: Will it cost more if I have someone else plan my travel? JW: Having a qualified destination wedding specialist help you plan your wedding away will not cost you anything additional and will actually save you money because of the discounts they are able to obtain on your behalf. They will also save you hours of work in searching and planning, and ease your stress with their expertise.

Q: If I use a travel agent or specialist I'm afraid I won't be able to get married at the property I want, only the ones they partner with, is this true? JW: That is certainly not true at All About Honeymoons and Destination Weddings. I have built relationships with resorts all over the World and am able to match couples up with the resort that best fits their needs. All resorts are different with varied characteristics and amenities, so working with a vast array of companies and resorts allows me to provide couples ideal options for their special day away.

One solution might be having a destination wedding at your chosen locale for immediate family and the closest of friends, with an at-home reception to include more guests. MILLINERS WITH METTLE: STEPHEN JONES AND MELISSA BOLIN Words by Carolyn Gerin

…She slowly descends the red-carpeted stairway, perusing the crowd, all eyes transfixed upon her arresting, intricate, plumed chapeau: the photographers swoop in, cameras flash…

In Ancien Régime France, status was conveyed by the size, scale and context of a hat. News of the day – miniature battle ships and victory ribbons – festooned the chapeaus of social superstars like Marie Antoinette. Although she ultimately lost her head, that head wore some newsworthy hats. In celebration of the hat, today’s "veil alternative," we delve into

SOUTH AFRICA’S QUIET

ROAR romance Words by Stacey Marcus

Photo courtesy of: &Beyond Dulini Lodge

After my recent trip to South Africa, I have officially named Mother Nature the best wedding planner on the planet. Who needs LED lights and an amped-up sound system when you can tie the knot under a canopy of stars and be serenaded by a symphony of African dwarf frogs and a choir of songbirds? Although it may seem like a wild idea, getting married or honeymooning in South Africa offers couples an opportunity to celebrate their union in a natural setting surrounded by endless miles of breathtaking landscape where the big five (elephant, lion, rhinoceroses, buffalo and leopard) roam free and romance blossoms beautifully like the South African protea.

A short-list romantic destination for its spectacular resorts, stunning beaches and welcoming culture, Thailand is also home to Chiva-Som (literally, “Haven of Life”), one of the World’s most celebrated and treasured luxury destination spas. Transform your future together with a focus on greater wellbeing and vitality, as you rejuvenate your minds, bodies and spirits.

My Chiva-Som journey began with a health and wellness consultation. What did I want to focus on during my stay? Destressing topped my list and I wanted to learn to generally live better and eat healthier. Much to my delight, I was ordered to do nothing strenuous for 24 hours, which gave me time to explore the resort at my leisure. Located on seven secluded beachfront acres with garden and ocean-view rooms and suites, Chiva-Som’s spa facilities include 70 treatment rooms, a kinesis studio, gym, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, bathing pavilion, sauna, steam, Jacuzzi and indoor swimming pool. OTAHUNA LODGE

Words by Elaine Hilbelink

If an isle in the South Pacific is your wedding or honeymoon destination dream, New Zealand offers a breathtakingly beautiful locale; and Otahuna Lodge, a Relais & Chateaux property, could provide the ideal romantic venue. Nestled in the hills near Christchurch, it is a destination which transports you to an era of bygone elegance and charm. Otahuna, a Victorian mansion built in 1895, in a Queen Anne style by Sir Heaton Rhodes, remained a family estate through the 1950s.

In 2005, the 30 remaining acres of this historic country property were purchased and the accommodations restored to their turn of the century elegance with all of the comforts and amenities one could wish for in a modern day luxury lodge. Otahuna and its acres of gardens could provide an exclusive site for your "down under" destination wedding, or a romantic honeymoon home-base to explore all this scenic country has to offer. When you choose Otahuna, its seven distinctive luxury suites with spa-like bathrooms and fireplaces can provide accommodations for your closest guests. The property is recognized as “A Garden of National Significance and guests can meander through formal gardens, along manicured wooded trails, around ponds or fields of daffodils, or enjoy the pool, hot tub and tennis court. Dining at Otahuna is an experience which tantalizes the taste buds and is included in the room tariff. Distinctive cuisine paired

Likuliku Lagoon Resort

“Ni sa bula” – Welcome to Fiji. From the moment I heard the sweet harmonies of the native greeters singing their welcome song, I fell in love with Fiji and its people who are some of the friendliest, warm and joyful people I have ever had the privilege to meet. Add an average temperature in the mid-80s, alabaster sands, crystal blue ocean with pristine coral reefs, amazing feasts, an endless array of activities and truly superb places to snuggle in at night, Fiji is a honeymoon hideaway which nourishes the soul and delights the senses. 76

PARADISE IN SAN DIEGO

Words and Images by Courtney Cox

A great honeymoon destination has to have the perfect balance of two things: relaxation and adventure. Paradise Point Resort and Spa in San Diego, California is one such spot. Set on 44 acres overlooking Mission Bay, Paradise Point really is a unique resort. As newlyweds, you’ll feel as though you’ve escaped to a lush retreat. In actuality, you’re just minutes to all of the area’s major attractions like Balboa Park, Sea World, the Gaslamp Quarter and Mission Beach. The resort’s 60s-style bungalows are not only adorable, but perfect for nesting newlyweds. Step off your private patio and right onto the beach for an early morning swim or stroll. Being bay-side does mean there aren’t any waves, but the views of downtown San Diego and Coronado Bridge more than make up for it. In addition to the typical perks of a private beach, as a bonus there are fire-pits scattered in front of the bungalows for beachside s’mores as the sun goes down. If you get a bit too much sun on your relaxing getaway, stop by The Spa for a calming and skin-soothing treatment. The treatment rooms are spacious with high, wood-beamed ceilings. No matter what indulgence you choose, all treatments include a natural coolant for your skin like lemongrass, pineapple or peppermint – perfect for that sore sunburn. After a day spent sailing or paddle boarding around the bay, I recommend a romantic dinner at Baleen. The Wood Roasted Day Boat Scallops was a real standout and the views from the restaurant’s patio are something you and your new spouse won’t soon forget. To cap things off, the crème brulee has a unique twist with chocolate fudge delightfully hidden at the bottom. Despite being so close to activities and attractions, you might just stay at Paradise Point throughout your entire honeymoon getaway. If you’re a seasoned sailor, feel free to travel down the coast by boat and dock directly on the edge of Paradise Point. The resort just celebrated its 50-year anniversary and it appears this private escape isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

to have & TO HOLD

travel like a travel writer: PERFECT PRODUCTS FOR GLAMOUR AND EASE Words by Carolyn Gerin

It only takes one press trip in an exotic city surrounded by fabulously turned-out journalists to comprehend the dreaded lost luggage issue: you simply cannot wear what you wore on a 12-hour flight to dinner. Is it any wonder travel writers live by the “carry-on manifesto?” Within every over-packer is a minimalist waiting to break free. The upside? The joy of fresh clothes and smart gadgets to help you sail out of the airport to your five-Star honeymoon or wedding destination. Get inspired, fear not and here’s how:

RULE 2: Bring the Bling You’ll need one big bauble: it needs to be editorial and work with everything. Dannijo, the dashing NYC design duo, creates perfect pieces to elicit queries from even the most scintillating fashion editors.

RULE 1: Bring one LBD and one Patterned Dress – every woman’s trusted co-pilot. To avoid the “all black all the time” style snooze, bring a companion dress in a patterned, classic shape which you can roll into a ball, shake out and wear from day to dinner like this figure-worshipping sheath from J. McLaughlin.

80

RULE 3: Scarves – Fashion Super-Heroes Ignore scarves at your peril: that LBD can look like three different outfits with

the right accoutrements. A luxurious cashmere scarf from We Are Owls will keep you toasty on frigid transatlantic flights and trendy when you land.

RULE 4: Give Peace a Chance Noise canceling headphones are the last bastion of peace when traveling coach. Sleeping or marathon film watching is within reach with these two exceptional picks: Audio Technica ATH-ANC9 Quiet Point Noise Canceling Headphones reduce noise up to 95%. Tri-Level Cancellation offers custom performance: office, study and airplane. Sennheiser USA MM 550-X – NoiseGard 2.0 reduce up to 90% of cabin noise and is equipped with Bluetooth 2.1 with Apt-X for clear stereo music (and calls), SRS Wow HD for movie and music enjoyment and folds up to a compact storage size.

RULE 5: Respect the Regimen For carry-on aficionados, great cosmetic devices do come in small packages. Keep best practices even when traveling: The Clarisonic Mia 2 is a highly effective acne-fighting cleansing device, sloughing off dead cells from the flight to reveal glowing skin in a carry-on-friendly miniature size. Fight frizz, go flat out or flip it with the Keratin Complex Travel Mini Iron. The ceramic-ionic surface heats

MEXICO:

ROMANTIC SECLUSION VILLA-STYLE Words by Jennifer Stein

mexico

Mexico is by no means short on amazing properties for weddings and honeymoons. From Cancun to Cabo, Puerto Vallarta to Acapulco – couples can find just about anything to fit their needs and budget. We’re always trying to uncover the most beautiful, interesting, adventurous and off-the-beaten-path properties out there, and after being invited to Imanta Resort, we found a place which matches all those characteristics to a tee. Nestled in the verdant jungle of Punta de Mita and overlooking Banderas Bay, Imanta Resort feels as if it has been there for centuries. From the water, it looks like an abandoned Mayan civilization built into the mountainside, but meticulously preserved and turned into a luxury villa property.

84

With a total of 12 villas, each one is completely custom and offers different luxuries. My husband and I stayed in two villas in the three days we visited. The first offered panoramic views of Banderas Bay with oversized windows, white walls contrasting with the luxurious dark hardwoods of the bed, furniture and light-blocking shutters. The room was enormous with ceilings stretching 20 feet in the air, an outdoor shower, soaking tub and plunge pool. It was steps away from the restaurant which served breakfast, evening cocktails on their rooftop terrace and dinner each night. Our villa was even closer to the concierge who would point us in the right direction of hiking trails, sunscreen or whatever we needed at that moment. Our next room was ocean-front with the waves crashing below our expansive sun deck complete with day bed, private plunge pool, private outdoor shower and a Jacuzzi tub which had a bay window that completely opened up to overlook our negativeedge pool and the ocean.

destinationido.com | S P R I N G & S U M M E R 2 0 1 3

We took a property tour and noted the many magnificent views from the grounds and the multiple bedroom “casonas which would be ideal for traveling families coming for a destination wedding. With sun decks, chefs kitchens and private swimming pools, an intimate destination wedding take-over here would be like a tropical fairytale. Imanta has hosted several weddings in the past and they take great care in the details, creating a special experience for each and every couple.

Photos courtesy of: Imanta Resort

When it comes to romance, Imanta has it figured out. While we were there, my husband and I celebrated our seven-year anniversary. I had mentioned this in passing and as we headed to dinner our last night there, the concierge escorted us to another part of the restaurant, opened two double doors and inside was a candle-lit dinner for two in a private room overlooking the ocean, with flower petals leading the way. The food the chef prepared was out of this world and unexpected. After dinner, we headed back to our villa only to find a candle-lit path of flower petals leading to a bubble bath and two glasses of Champagne. Every detail was a delightful surprise and seamlessly executed by the staff. If you’re considering a destination wedding or ideal honeymoon location, I can, without reservation, recommend the Imanta Resort. A three day visit made me fall in love with Mexico (and my handsome husband of seven years) all over again.

After deciding Mexico is the destination for you and your dream wedding away, comes the task of choosing the perfect resort and venue. The hundreds of choices in the Cancun area alone are bittersweet; there’s something for everyone, but how on earth do you choose just one? The best way to help decide is to prioritize your wants and needs. For example, do you want adults-only or kid friendly? All-inclusive or traditional? Budget friendly or five-star luxury? Luckily for you, we at Destination I Do have one Cancun recommendation which will be sure to please and leave not only you, but your guests happy. 86

See what happens when girls fall in love with books. In the developing world, a girl doesn’t have a lot of options. She often has to drop out of school to work or marry young due to societal pressures. But an education can change that. The longer girls stay in school, the more likely they are to earn higher wages, marry later in life, have healthier families and educate their own children. Room to Read has helped thousands of girls gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. Honor the power of education on your wedding day with a gift that changes lives. While most destination wedding couples have a love of travel, one’s hometown always holds a special place in the heart. This would come to transform itself into the couple’s overall wedding vibe. “The combination of East vs. West Coast shaped the theme and feel of our wedding day – country and glamour,” says the couple. 112
