FALL & WINTER 2018
TURNINGTables EDITOR'S LETTER
It’s not every day that the editor of a national wedding magazine gets engaged. Therefore, this “Editor’s Letter” is a special one. Our very own Courtney Cox (soon to be Courtney Kellar) heard the question she’d been waiting for, “Will you marry me?”
When she came into the office to spill the beans and, of course, after the squeals, tears and jumping subsided, I quickly realized – the author has now become the reader! To take full advantage of this rare opportunity, I decided to switch gears and let her be the subject of the interview for once. Having eight years at Destination I Do under her belt, she has some serious insider knowledge and unique wisdom.
EDITOR’S LETTER
Q: What’s the first thing you did when you got your ring? A: I asked my fiancé if he had gotten jewelry insurance! Most women lose or damage their engagement ring within the first year, because they aren’t used to wearing one. I also made sure we had a jewelry insurance policy that covers international travel, since I go abroad regularly for the magazine.
14
Q. How has working in the wedding industry, specifically for a wedding magazine, shaped your own wedding plans? A: I feel like I have a very realistic picture of what the planning process looks like. Not only in terms of logistics, but cost! My fiancé and I have been together throughout my eight years at the magazine and I’ve run the gamut in terms of what I thought I wanted – everything from a large, traditional wedding to an elopement. Because of my background, I feel like I skipped the “honeymoon
phase” of being engaged and jumped straight into the reality of what planning a wedding entails.
Q: How has your view of weddings changed in the time you’ve been in the business? A: I started at DID when I was 22 and I definitely took a romantic, somewhat naïve approach to weddings. For me it was all about the fairy tale. Now that I’ve matured and gained knowledge over the years, I realize that all of those things cost money. I’m a frugal person by nature, yet have very expensive taste. Those two contradictions don’t exactly add up to a big, fancy event. I can appreciate a gorgeous, over-the-top wedding as much as anyone, but it’s important to know what works for you and your fiancé’s personalities and priorities. Q: What is something you will absolutely splurge on for your wedding celebration? And what will you save on? A: For us, it’s all about the guest experience – thanking the people who have loved and supported us over the many years we’ve been together! Epic food, an open bar and a live band are top priorities. Also, a top-notch photographer – if there’s one thing I’m snobby about, it’s photography! As for areas in which to save, I would say my dress and décor. Ideally, our guests will spend all their time on the dance floor and not sitting at their tables admiring centerpieces (or lack thereof in my case!). Q: How many gowns do you think you’ll try on and will you continue to shop even after you’ve found “the one?” A: Normally, I’m in and out of a fitting room in lighting speed – either I like something or I don’t, there’s no hemming and hawing. But, for wedding
destinationido.com
dresses, I don’t know what’s going to look best on my body and I want something that fits the setting we ultimately choose. I can’t imagine trying on more than 10 dresses, but who knows! One thing I do know for sure is that I won’t continue to shop once I’ve made my choice. To me, that sounds like torture and a recipe for regretting my decision! Q: Which story are you most pumped about in this issue, now that your ring finger is considerably heavier? A: I have a nerdy fascination with national parks, so I’m in love with our Ask the Expert story, “National Park Nuptials” (pg. 68). Also, I’m all about the details, so the Guest Book story “Spending Savvy – What You Get for the Money” (pg. 34) is right up my alley and completely fascinating. And, of course, the Real-Life Weddings (pg. 94) is always a favorite. DID’s couples never cease to amaze me with their creativity and thoughtful responses. Congratulations to you, Courtney! You’re going to be a beautiful bride no matter where you say your destination “I do’s!” I just hope you let us cover YOUR story in our Real-Life Weddings section! Yours truly, Jennifer Stein

5 Wedding Vendor
RED FLAGS WORDS BY ANN COSIMANO WITH ARAG LEGAL INSURANCE, ARAGLEGAL.COM
Before signing on the dotted line, make sure you’re working with legitimate vendors. The last thing you want is your big day in the hands of an unreliable person or shady company. Here are five red flags to look out for. 1. You Can’t Find Info About Them Online Most wedding vendors have at least some sort of online presence these days. If they don’t have a website, you might want to consider how committed they are to their business. Also, if there aren’t any reviews of their services online or if all you can find are negative reviews, you should find out why. 2. The Price Seems Too Good to be True If their prices are much lower than their competitors, consider it a red flag. Maybe they use subpar products or inexperienced staff…whatever the case is, anything outside of the industry standard in your area should be questioned. 3. Their Contract is Hard to Understand Maybe it’s too vague or has too much fine print. Either way, if everything isn’t explained in plain English, you should ask an attorney to review the contract before signing. If you have legal insurance, you won’t have to pay any network attorney fees in case you need to call an attorney to review a contract. 4. They Can’t Answer Industry Questions If they are unsure about what ceremony permits need to be filed, for example, this is a sign of inexperience. You want someone who can walk you through exactly what to do to make sure everything goes smoothly. 5. You Can Only Pay in Cash A discount for paying in cash is one thing, but if the ONLY way a vendor lets you pay is in cash (i.e. they don’t want a paper trail) this should be considered a huge red flag. For more information regarding this topic, see our Adventures in Etiquette article on pg. 92.

Wedding Planners vs. Event Designers WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
WORDS BY JUNG LEE OF FÊTE NY
At their core, wedding planners and event designers typically play very different roles in a wedding. Depending on the services offered by each, there could be some overlap, which can lead to confusion. A comprehensive wedding planner will provide the following services: F They will serve as the lead project manager for the wedding by managing the planning process, coordinating all vendors and overseeing the operations both during the process and on the day-of. Think: details, organization, negotiator, advocate and leader. F They will also help you develop a wedding “vision” – the overall experience and how it reflects you as a couple. The planner will get to know the couple better than anyone, so they need to collaborate and communicate with the vendors to help customize the design, food, drink, service, music and beyond. They do develop creative concepts for the wedding, but in conjunction with the vendors.
A promise for the future in a place called paradise.
Photo courtesy of: Christian Oth Studio
Event designers will provide the following services: F Create the look and feel of a wedding. Some have a very narrow definition of design and only consider flowers, ceremony and tabletop, while others take every visual aspect of a wedding into consideration. F Traditionally, designers are not always hired for their logistic and operational expertise, so unless an event design firm has a separate department run by professional project managers that handles all facets of a wedding, such as contracts, budgeting, food service and timelines, you’ll want a true wedding planner handling those details. Ultimately, you want someone organized, detail-oriented and experienced with a deep understanding of all facets of a wedding to plan your event. There are a few select companies that excel at both planning and design. For destination weddings, these are of great value, because they eliminate the need to bring in two different companies.

TRAVELING MARITIME in NYC WORDS BY JENNIFER STEIN
New York City is known for relevant, hip hotels and the area of Chelsea doesn’t disappoint. The Maritime Hotel is truly a boutique hotel offering expected nautical décor, but in a chic way. The rooms are small, but charming, and comfort, class and fun are easily mixed for a winning combination. The common areas are really where the hotel shines. The lobby bar (with its fireplace lounging area) feels like a cozy home-away-from-home filled with rich velvet settees, warm woods and soft lighting. Breakfast is included in your stay and served in the barroom – which feels more like a sunroom – at La Sirena (the property’s Michelin-starred restaurant). Rates start at $225 USD per night. themaritimehotel.com

Love Your Layover:
SHANGHAI WORDS BY HARMONY WALTON
A promise for the future in a place called paradise.
Store your bags at Shanghai Pudong International Airport for just a couple of dollars a day, grab a metro pass on the world’s largest rapid transit system, and in no time you’ll be in the heart of the booming city of Shanghai for an exciting honeymoon stopover, visa not required (during a layover). 8 HOURS Maximize your time in the city with an English-speaking guide and driver (taxi drivers often don’t speak English). Start your day with sunrise at the Bund, the west bank of the Huangpu River, looking out on the city’s modern skyline. Enjoy the sights and a stroll as you work up an appetite for local hairy crabs and later stop at Jing’an Temple for a little quiet time in one of the three main halls before you depart.
Photo courtesy of: Lily Chen Photography
12 HOURS Shopping is sensory overload in the Old City market of Shanghai. Stop, shop, smell and taste the flavors here before walking over the waters of the neighboring Yuyuan Garden, then head towards the famed People’s Square. See the modern marvels of the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall or, on weekends, stroll past the “marriage market” – an ancient tradition. End your day overlooking the Bund from the 58th floor of The Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai, Pudong at Flair Rooftop Restaurant and Bar. Boasting the highest alfresco dining in China, you can’t beat the views, the raw bar or 40 types of vodka on hand. 24 HOURS If an overnight is available to you, stay at the new St. Regis Shanghai Jingan and get a taste of East-meets-West in a traditional English-style setting, complete with Chinese art and amenities. Take Afternoon Tea in The Drawing Room while enjoying live music. 72 HOURS With a little more time on your trip, consider a visit to Shanghai Disney Resort. This makes a great last day activity before you depart in the evening. With no Instagram or other popular social media outlets available during your time in China, you’ll find those extra hours go a long way towards seeing the city on a limited schedule!

eunion Resort is a unique combination of rolling vistas near a city scene. While only 25 minutes outside of Orlando, the resort’s 2,200 acres make it feel like it’s in a world of its own. If a beach isn’t essential to your Florida destination wedding vision, but you still want lots of activities for you and your guests, Reunion could be the perfect solution. It’s convenient to Orlando’s main attractions, but there’s plenty to keep you and your guests busy on-site.

This AAA Four-Diamond Salamander Resort especially caters to multigenerational families. There’s a five-acre water park for the kiddos, three world-class golf courses for the sport enthusiasts and a quaint, but comfortable, spa for those looking to truly kick back and relax. Whatever your taste or budget, there’s a level of accommodation to fit your
needs. Reunion Resort is made up of seven different communities, ranging from Reunion Grande™ villas to vacation rental homes with up to 12 bedrooms – either way there’s more than enough space to go around. The sprawling resort does come with a slight drawback…don’t be surprised if you get turned around! If you have an iPhone, I recommend “dropping a pin” outside your front door, so there’s no room for error. Your Lyft driver will thank you! With so much land to cover and activities to choose from, you can see your guests as much – or as little – as you like. During your stay, be sure to head up to Eleven restaurant’s rooftop to view the nightly Disney World fireworks. Once the wedding weekend is at-hand, you can certainly find a unique destinationido.com
combination of settings and venues to suit several events. Consider Linear Park as your ceremony site and dance the night away with a reception in the Grande Falls Pavillion. Your wedding plans are in good hands with Senior Catering & Wedding Sales Manager Lisa New, who planned over-the-top events at nearby Disney World for several years. Also, spring and fall are ideal seasons, both in terms of weather and crowds at the nearby Orlando attractions. Some of your destination wedding guests may be surprised to learn you’re saying “I do” inland, but we can assure you they won’t miss the sand with the endless options at Reunion Resort.

he coastal resort destination of Destin with emerald green water and sugar white sand is truly special. The Henderson Beach Resort and Spa is the new kid on the block. Destin, Florida has long been known as a great vacation spot for families and spring breakers, but now, with the addition of The Henderson, Destin can add luxury to its calling card. There are a number of reasons for Destin’s appeal, including easy access through four area airports, sumptuous seafood, championship golf courses, world-class fishing and every type of water sport you can think of.
Photos courtesy of: The Henderson
From the moment you enter the grand “living room” of The Henderson, you feel at home and have a sense of nostalgia. Great care has been taken to welcome you with the feeling of the sea, with soft teal hues blended with the gold tones of the sand throughout this calming resort. As you meander the hallways your eyes are drawn to the work of local artists and photographs of the area’s rich history. The Salamander Spa is one of the most serene and beautiful spas I have ever experienced. The Henderson is already the choice for many couples planning a destination wedding and we predict their dance card will be full very shortly as word gets out about the variety of venues for ceremonies, receptions and all the other events that are part of a destination wedding. Outdoor settings include beachfront to rooftop and garden to courtyard. When it is time to move inside, The Henderson features 10,000 square feet of event space that can accommodate up to 250 guests.
This seaside manor just steps from the powdery sands of the Emerald Coast has it all for the couple contemplating a family friendly, but elegant destination wedding. FALL & WINTER 2018

Hotel Casa Del Mar’s Mediterraneaninspired lobby is well balanced with an Art Deco flare. Romance here is a neverending story and the beauty doesn’t stop in the lobby. When I opened the door to my guest room, the natural warm glow of sunlight filtered in and instantly relaxed me. The fragrant fresh flowers were a welcome touch, but the Italian marble bathroom with hydrothermal massage tub was astonishing. Hotel Casa del Mar is located on Santa Monica Beach and within walking distance to the iconic Santa Monica Pier. If you are looking to do some shopping, then stroll over to Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place. Feeling adventurous? Meander over to Muscle Beach or Venice Beach where people watching is all the entertainment you need. cricket, afternoon tea and driving on the left side of the road. Queen Elizabeth II graces banknotes, men wear pressed shorts with blazers, knee-socks and dress shoes, and English is the island’s common language. You’ll also find West Indian traditions like the Gombey, a popular costumed dance performed to rhythmic drumming, and pepper-rich dishes, like seafood stews, along with conch fritters and rice and beans. And here’s something else: Bermuda has virtually no crowds and very few cars, because there are no car rentals for tourists and most people simply walk, ride mopeds or take the bus or ferry. What’s more, foreign fast-food outlets are

illegal (a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Hamilton opened before the legislation was introduced), meaning there’s plenty of authentic island cooking. A choice spot to stay is Rosewood Bermuda, which recently completed a $25 million renovation. All 92 guestrooms and suites have become glamorous retreats, most with oversize soaking tubs, wet bars, Italian bed linens, terraces and ocean views. Wander over to the Beach Club Restaurant with its hip new bar and posh cabanas to lounge by the pool, before lunching on French bistro fare like duck confit and cod meuniére. Savor Bermuda’s famous fish chowder invigorated with Bermuda’s Gosling’s Rum and Outerbridge’s Original Sherry Peppers at The Island Brasserie. Then there’s Tucker’s Bar – serving light snacks and rum, the island’s signature spirit. In addition to its own private beach, Rosewood Bermuda has an 18-hole, par 70 golf course. It also has a spa that incorporates island botanicals from the resort’s garden into pampering options like the half-day “Sense of Bermuda Experience” complete with a massage, facial, mani-pedi and lunch. “For couples planning a wedding or honeymoon, the reimagined Rosewood Bermuda is the ideal venue to celebrate,” says Managing Director, Paul Telford, also Chairman of the Bermuda Tourism Authority. “The property offers ample flexibility in terms of celebration venues; from the enhanced private beach club, to the golf club, to the new dining venues,
including a new Conservatory Bar and Lounge, which means couples can curate a completely unique fête based on their preferences.” For amorous off-premise adventures, Telford suggests seeing the Unfinished Church in St. George, a half-built, gothic cathedral with no ceilings or floors (other than grass). It’s one of the island’s most popular wedding spots (and a great place to snap a selfie). Another gem is Natura Spa at Grotto Bay Beach Resort and Spa, where you descend into the softly-lit Prospero’s Cave to luxuriate in private couple’s treatments in a tented area among the stalactites. There is “Lovers Lane” to visit near the gorgeous, plantfilled Paget Marsh Nature Reserve and the island’s horseshoe-shaped limestone structures called moongates. It’s tradition for newlyweds to step through for good luck. Of course, you and your partner will create your own romantic traditions on this beautiful island, less than three hours by plane from most major East Coast cities. For me and my husband, it’s visiting the rock he proposed upon at a secluded beach. For you two? The possibilities are as endless as your love for each other.

he setting you select for your destination wedding is like a beautiful canvas, providing inspiration as you blend your personal style with the unique aspects of the location. If 70s “retro-chic” resonates, then Innisbrook Resort near Tampa, Florida may be for you. Golf enthusiasts will immediately recognize Innisbrook Resort as the home of the Valspar Championship and will applaud your choice of venue as they tee up on any of four well-manicured courses on-site. Are you having a hard time narrowing down the guest list? Innisbrook Resort is one of the few wedding venues in the area that can accommodate extra large weddings. Ceremonies for up to 800 guests can be held at the Osprey South Oak Tree, followed by a reception at the elegant Inverness Hall Ballroom, with its high ceilings and crystal chandeliers that glimmer overhead. Guest suites are perfect for families and reasonably priced, so family and friends can be housed on property. There is plenty to keep all ages busy, whether it be a round of tennis, indulging yourself (and your wedding party) at the spa, lake fishing, jogging trails or swimming in one of the six pools on-site. The kiddos and “wannabe kiddos” will love the Loch Ness Monster Pool with its water slide! Farm-to-table cuisine is a highlight of the restaurant choices with our favorite being Packard’s Steakhouse for the uber delicious filet mignon. Amelia Island A SOUTHERN GEM
WORDS BY CAROLYN STEERE
N
amed for Princess Amelia, the daughter of George II of Great Britain, Amelia Island is a Southern gem befitting a modern princess bride. Thirteen miles of pristine beaches, rich history, unique shops, quaint churches and a long tradition of Southern hospitality are all reasons to consider Amelia Island for your dream destination wedding. Amelia Island is part of a chain of barrier islands, a short distance from Jacksonville, Florida with frequent and convenient flights from most domestic cities. With the magnificent Atlantic Ocean at your doorstep, the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort is a perfect mix of laid-back and luxury. Each airy, beach-inspired room has an ocean view and there are a variety of choices when the “hungries” hit. Foodies will savor the chef inspired culinary treats at the Marsh View Bar and Grill, Oceanside, Marché Burette, and private events can be planned at “The Sprouting Project,” the unique vision of Chef Daven Wardynski. I have never seen a more inspired presentation than charcuterie served from an outdoor fence.
Gather your loved ones and kick off the event with a beach party around a firepit or indulge your wedding party at the spa with the relaxing Sea, Sand and Salt Package or the Plantation Blossom Ritual. The main event is certainly your wedding ceremony and reception and the Omni Amelia Island Plantation has a wide variety of venues to select from. There are three-and-a-half miles of coastline for the “sand-between-your-toes” beach ceremony, the splendid views and generous reception space of Walker’s Landing on the marsh side of the island, the Oceanview Terrace overlooking the Atlantic or the Amelia Plantation Chapel conveniently located near Red Maple Lake. To top it all off, when you have your destination wedding at Omni Amelia Island Plantation, there is the added perk of a complimentary honeymoon at one of 14 of Omni’s other resort properties.

Both land and sea activities will entertain your wedding guests, including golfing, biking, fishing, swimming, boating, shelling and paddling through the marshes, to name just a few. We even ventured over to Amelia’s Wheels, donned a helmet and stepped on to a Segway to meander along the trails throughout the beautiful resort. Your family and friends can either break a sweat or bask in the sun and will thank you for the experience.

What You Get for the

You get what you pay for – or so they say. When it comes to some things, that old adage can absolutely ring true, but weddings are a bit more complex. We interviewed five couples to find out what their weddings cost, where they placed their priorities and how they cut back.
34
While you’re reviewing the following pages, keep one thing in mind: the guest list. This is by far the biggest driver of cost. The more people who attend, the more it will cost you. However, you can save in some areas and splurge in others – the choice is yours! A little advice from a real-life destination bride (that’s me!): set your spending priorities first, before you get swept up in wanting it all! And most importantly, don’t go into debt for your wedding event – spend only what you are able. What is important is your union, so it’s best to start it off on solid financial ground. After all, each one of these weddings were beautiful, regardless of how much was spent.

The goal of an easy to get to and intimate wedding led Chuck and Dayle to the beautiful Colorado Rockies.
Only a two-hour drive brought 75 guests to Beaver Creek during peak fall foliage. “The aspen trees’ leaves are amazing in the fall and it made for a beautiful backdrop,” recalls the bride. Had they kept the wedding at home, the couple would have had 400-500 guests at their interfaith ceremony. Instead, they opted for a smaller group seated on wooden benches in the middle of an aspen grove as the sun was setting. Dayle had followed her destination wedding planner’s work for years and had total faith. “We wanted [the wedding] to be breathtakingly beautiful and I knew it would be. We also wanted our guests to feel taken care of.” With pointers from Aimee Monihan of Mountain Occasions, that’s exactly what happened. “Guests are still raving about it,” says the bride.

A teenaged girl’s dream turned reality when she married the love of her life in Maui, Hawaii.
“Carmen fell in love with Hawaii when she was 13 and had been planning her wedding there ever since,” said the groom. Over 80 people watched this lifelong dream come to fruition at the Mauka Lani Estate on the island of Maui with an exquisite sunset topping off an already magical event. The couple struggled a bit with budgeting for the wedding, but Lorrie from Unveiled Hawaii came to their rescue. “Our amazing wedding planner always kept us in check. She told us where it was important to save and splurge. We trusted her guidance and she never led us astray!” Carmen and Chad wanted their wedding to feel like them – “low key, welcoming and fun.” And when it came to priorities on where to spend – photography, “to die for” food, signature drinks and a favorite local band topped the list. “Our lovely wedding planner Lorrie was another top priority. At first I had no idea how amazing it would be, but we could not have done any of it without her.”
TIPS from THE PLANNER: When sticking to your spending plan: “Be REALISTIC!” Make sure you don’t just discuss what’s most important with your planner, but also with each other. As well as anyone who is contributing financially to the wedding.
TIPS from THE COUPLE: Take time to make all your big decisions. This way you won’t regret any of them. Allow yourself to change your mind. The wedding only got better as time went on.

If music and food are top priorities, New Orleans is a good place to meet those needs. With Rebecca and Charles’
families spread throughout the country, it only made sense for them to pick a destination wedding in the “Big Easy.” At first, some guests were a bit “skeptical” of the decision, but quickly came around. “We are still hearing back from guests about how much they enjoyed the experience,” says the couple.
GUEST BOOK
Budgeting for the wedding wasn’t easy for the couple, but a professional wedding planner helped “guide the process.” “We identified what was most important to us and made those our big ticket items,” recalls the couple. Food and beverage was extremely important. “The food served was decadent – filet mignon and shrimp and grits.” But the true star of the show was the music. “Between our band and DJ, everybody was on the dance floor permanently!”
42
One highlight for the groom was the second line stopping traffic for an impromptu dance party. “The Catholic church across the street paused its mass and its parishioners joined our party!” recalls the couple.

For example: ceremony floral that can be moved during cocktail hour to be used at the reception.” Aimee even loves to re-use candles after guests have left their tables and are busy on the dance floor. “If possible, we will create a beautiful candle

THE PLANNER: A really good planner should guide their clients to consciously and creatively spend. We treat our clients’ money as if it were our own – with great respect and constant monitoring. Just 40 minutes’ drive from Cancun airport and fit for any wedding away is Mayakoba. This sprawling 1,400 acre destination is connected by mangrove-lined waterways. Consider Mayakoba the “Venice of Mexico,” as you can travel from one hotel property to another via interconnecting canals. What makes Mayakoba even more special are the four distinct properties that stretch from one end of the community to the other. No matter what your style or price range, one of the four resorts will fit your needs.
Our dream team of professionals worked hard to create a one-ofa-kind design for each location, so you can see exactly what your wedding could look like. Each property is totally unique from the others and the designs you’ll see in the following pages are inspired by the colors and landscapes of Mayakoba.

True to its Thai roots, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba feels like a fusion between south of the border and Southeast Asia. The architecture is jaw-dropping, yet feels entirely indigenous to the area. With private villas and personal plunge pools for all, luxury and exclusivity go hand-in-hand. Weddings here are second nature: effortless and totally stress-free. The set-up shown is on the sprawling, white sand beach overlooking the Caribbean Sea, but there is no end to the backdrops Banyan Tree offers. SIX SENSES DOURO VALLEY
THE HONEYMOONIST
The Douro Valley is one of the hottest spots in Europe for food and wine lovers. One of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world, this UNESCO World Heritage region is famed for port, but has
plenty of other varietals to explore. Six Senses Douro Valley is a 57-room hillside retreat set in a restored 19th century manor house, with gorgeous views of the river valley. Rooms come with zen touches by well-known spa designer Clodagh, while the spa features indoor and outdoor pools and 10 treatment rooms overlooking the gardens. Enjoy nightly wine tastings and meals from the on-site organic garden.

I especially love…the Alchemy Bar, where you mix up your own unique, locally-sourced scrubs and balms to use in treatments. When not spa-ing: Take a helicopter tour over the scenic valley to Quinta da Ervamoira for a tour and wine-paired lunch. On the way back, stop to see prehistoric rock paintings at Côa Valley Archaeologocal Park.

Few things in life are more stressful than wedding planning. As a result, I’m finding more couples are making room for some spa time, either as a romantic getaway before the wedding or for a few days incorporated into a longer honeymoon. These four wellness retreats each offer a unique sense of place, gorgeous surroundings and major romance factor.

Mexico
CHABLÉ RESORT & SPA Honeymooners flock to Mexico for its beaches, but this new spa makes you forget about the sea. Located on the Yucatán Peninsula outside the colonial city of Mérida, the hacienda-style Chablé Resort & Spa features 38 stand-alone villas, each with a free-standing stone
soaking tub, floor-to-ceiling windows and private plunge pool with a hammock strung handily overhead. The spa, designed around a cenote, features Mayan traditions alongside more expected body and beauty treatments. Rates include two daily activities, ranging from fitness classes to an indigenous temazcal (steam bath) ritual. After a day of relaxation, take advantage of three restaurants offering everything from fresh seafood ceviches to hearty moles, and sample from the largest private tequila collection in the world.
I especially love…the amazing hydrotherapy circuit with three plunge pools, a salt-water flotarium and a steam room set in a gold-tiled cave. When you’re not spa-ing: Take an excursion to the home of Doña Eneida, a local woman with serious culinary skills. She’ll teach you how to make a traditional dish of tortillas and pork over a wood fire in her humble kitchen.

THE LODGE AT WOODLOCH
Anyone who equates “spa” with sacrifice will learn the opposite at this natural reserve in the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains. It has easy access from major cities like N.Y.C., Philly and Boston, but disconnection is the goal. Cell phone use is restricted to the 58 plush guest rooms and
the 400 acres beg you to get outside, with hiking trails and a small lake for kayaking and paddleboarding. For additional activities, experience the Japanese art of forest bathing with a meditative nature walk, try a fitness class (“Barry White Yoga” is so fun you forget that you’re sweating!), learn to draw, or soak in two waterfall-style hot tubs, one indoors and one outside overlooking the pines. The treatment menu spans massages, facials and deeper modalities like reiki and craniosacral therapy, all delivered by top-notch therapists.

I especially love…TREE Restaurant and Bar, which rivals any big-city spot with decadent, multi-course menus featuring organic produce, specials ranging from lobster pappardelle to cheesesteak dumplings, and a Wine Spectator-ranked wine list. When not spa-ing: The mountains beckon with everything from fly fishing and golf in the summer to snow-tubing, ice skating and skiing come winter. If you’re on the island on a Thursday night, try the local fish fry that takes place just next door to the Gansevoort. Enjoy live local music, all the conch fritters you can imagine, rum cocktails mixed into freshly cracked coconuts and a night filled with fun under the stars. Daytime activities are plentiful too, though simply napping on Grace Bay Beach tops many bucket lists. For those who seek underwater sports, a dive at one of the largest barrier reefs in the world is a must-do. Snorkeling is in abundance closer to shore and, if you’re lucky, you might spot JoJo, the island’s famous solitary dolphin who has adopted tourists as his family since separating from his pod as a calf. To go on the lookout for JoJo, take a group or private boat tour and get picked up right from the resort. Then, get intentionally marooned on a nearby uninhabited island for an afternoon of sun, sand, fresh conch and even a beach party if you choose. Come wedding day, say “I do” for up to 200 guests on the sand at Gansevoort Turks + Caicos. After all, this is why you came to the famous Grace Bay Beach. Or, consider an intimate wedding alternative at the recently opened Gansevoort Villas. Just an eight-minute drive from the hotel, the villas provide a completely different hotel-like experience, one ideal for small groups. The four- and five-bedroom oceanfront homes each come complete with two pools and patios, a sunken fire pit lounge area and stairs that lead right into the water. With resort rights and a shuttle to take you to-andfrom, a beach ceremony followed by a small cocktail hour and reception in your villa is a match made in heaven. Come honeymoon time, enjoy the Exhale Spa at the resort, attentive poolside service and all the amenities you could expect from a beachfront vacation hot spot with all the luxuries of city life and views that can’t be beat.

Choosing to host your event in a federally managed park certainly comes with strings attached, but the benefits outweigh the risks. You’re committing your lives to each other, while supporting the National Park Service. If you really want to go the extra mile, you might consider a charitable donation to your chosen park. Below you will discover four firsthand, industry experts’ advice for hosting your event in a U.S. National Park.

Choose a Location: With over one million acres, Glacier National Park has endless possibilities for beautiful photos. What’s difficult is choosing how far you want to travel from where you’re staying, where you’re saying ‘I do,” etc.. Pick the spot you think is prettiest and plan everything else around it! You only have one chance at this, so I always say, ‘Go epic or go home!’
ASK THE EXPERT
Choose Your Time of Day: If you want breathtaking photos, you’ll want to have your ceremony in the morning or in the early evening. Whatever you do, don’t plan on photos from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as the light can be harsh. It can be difficult to plan around these times, but you didn’t choose to get married in a national park for convenience, you’re getting married there because it’s one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Don’t you want the photos to reflect that beauty?

Yosemite National Park Real-Life Bride & Former Wedding Planner
Make it a Vacation for All: For example, rent luxury cabins in Yosemite and invite all your guests to spend the weekend with you. Have activities planned like hiking, a BBQ rehearsal dinner and, of course, the wedding celebration. Create a Detailed Itinerary: With your wedding being held in a national park, cell service is limited. Make sure to provide each guest with a detailed itinerary including directions, activity start times and estimated travel times (oneway, windy roads take time!). Hire a Planner: I cannot stress this enough. Most, if not all of us, don’t plan weddings on a regular basis. A professional planner will help find the right vendors that not only fit within your budget, but know how to travel for a unique destination wedding. They plan all the details, communicate your vision and execute the day-of. EXPERT

Keep it Intimate: National park weddings work really well for an intimate, casual vibe. Planning and logistics can start to get a bit more difficult as you creep-up in your guest count. Educate Yourselves: Ensure you know the permitting rules and regulations. Most parks require a permit and have certain rules when it comes to weddings specifically, so it’s important you fully understand them.
Research Restrooms and Electricity: Make sure you research all of the facilities available to you. You will most likely need to rent a generator – especially if your reception is located in the heart of the park. Additionally, restroom access is a must. If there aren’t any nearby, you will need to rent them. EXPERT

Stationer Extraordinaire & Zion National Park Vow Renewal Bride
Don’t Skip Your Docs: National parks take their lands very seriously, so if you’re thinking of skipping the permit office – don’t! We renewed our vows in Zion National Park with only 12 guests and the park rangers asked us for our permit before we even boarded the shuttle. Build-in Extra Time: Timing can be unpredictable in a national park. We once saw a shuttle bus come to a complete stop and then creep along the road for over 20 minutes. We discovered there was a tiny tarantula in the road that was preventing the shuttle from getting through. In a national park, anything can slow you down, so build extra time into your schedule for the unexpected.

MUST-ASK QUESTIONS:
BY KRISTY RICE
• What is the earliest and latest you can enter and leave the park? • What restrictions will you face when bringing in décor elements? • Will a park ranger need to be on-site at your ceremony location? • Will you need to use the park shuttle system for transport of your guests and vendors?

f you’re looking to get married in an exotic, tropical locale dripping with romance, consider Fiji. This archipelago of over 300 islands in the South Pacific has palm-fringed beaches, misty jungles filled with sweet frangipani and some of the most beautiful retreats in the word. Here, you can kick back while soaking up the indigenous culture. Fiji Airways provides regular service from major West Coast cities to Australia, Fiji and beyond. It has spacious, comfortable cabins and courteous service, making it an excellent choice when choosing how to soar and slumber across the Pacific. At Nanuku Auberge Resort, which has its own airstrip and helicopter pad, you can tie the knot on your own private island, then spend the night nestled under the mangroves after a candlelit, Champagne dinner for two. Staff will stay on a small boat anchored far enough away to ensure your privacy, yet accessible enough to zip you back to the resort any time you wish. destinationido.com
MARRY HERE FIJI Nanuku also has its own two-mile beach with crystalline waters, a gorgeous infinity pool and private, thatched villas set in gardens and appointed with polished wood floors, canopy beds and bathrooms featuring outdoor rain showers. The spa has traditional Fijian treatments, like the Fijian Bobo Massage, which employs deep pressure and unique strokes, while the restaurant offers Fijian specialties ranging from coconut milk ceviche to lovo, a luscious feast for special occasions (like your rehearsal dinner) cooked underground in banana leaves and featuring smoky, juicy pork shoulder, white fish, sweet potatoes and taro. For a memorable excursion, visit ShangriLa’s Fijian Resort & Spa, where after some pampering body treatments using indigenous botanicals, you can visit a local, Fijian village. The Shangri-La works with Sigatoka River Safari outfitter, which will transport you via jet boat up the Sigatoka River to a local village, where you’ll partake in a traditional Fijian welcome ceremony (everyone in Fiji speaks English) by drinking the famous kava, a mild-tasting tea made from the dried, powdered root of a plant in the pepper family. Next, you’ll savor a bountiful lunch made with village-grown vegetables, followed by musical entertainment and dancing. Then, it’s back to the resort to relax as you wish.

honeymooned in Botswana ten years ago and the country remains one of my favorite destinations in the world. It’s ideal for adventurous couples. What could be more romantic than sipping a gin and tonic while watching the giant sherbet-orange African sun slowly drop down over the bush and a herd of giraffe, zebra or elephant meander by? A honeymoon here is for those who are seeking up-close animal encounters, interaction with amazing locals and experiences like no other. I recommend a stay at the Natural Selection properties, which have locations throughout Botswana. Start your trip in the Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the world’s largest salt pans formed on an ancient lake that has long since evaporated, leaving a beautiful desert scene in its wake.

Spend a night at Jack’s Camp, one of the most well-known and highly-regarded safari camps in Botswana. Situated in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, the tented camp still maintains a 1940s style. The camp features seven twin and three double tents with en-suite bathrooms, as well as outdoor showers. The guides here are some of the best to be found, so don’t be surprised if you get within feet of a variety of animals – including lion cubs. For a real treat, be sure to go for a meerkat bush walk. These inquisitive little creatures will walk right up to people (if you’re sitting down, they may even climb over you). This destination is one of the best places to see meerkats in all of Africa.

For the finale of your safari, be sure to include a night at Sable Alley’s sister property, Skybeds. It’s one of the most romantic “glamping” places in the world. The walls and ceilings are open, so honeymooners will be sleeping directly under thousands of African stars and surrounded by the sounds of nature. Be sure to book a stay at Sable Alley, which has 12 luxury en-suite, solar powered tents raised on comfortable decks. in the highland clouds. The property is an architectural marvel that feels more like a villa you can call home; complete with a movie lounge, bar and island education in the evenings. The restaurant, EVOLUTION, is a mix of inventive Peruvian, Ecuadorian and American favorites on a rotating menu to ensure variety. The pool deck is the ideal place to watch the fog roll in at night and enjoy the hot Ecuadorian sun by day. But, you won’t find much downtime here. Pikaia Lodge plans itineraries for every kind of adventurer. This unique, all-inclusive traveling experience pairs delicious fare and fun cocktails with daily land and sea excursions, all of which you won’t want to miss. “While doing the booking, our reservation agents organize the guests’ itineraries in order to maximize their exposure to other islands and [provide] adequate down time at the lodge,” Andrew Balfour, General Manager of Pikaia Lodge explained. “The end result is a
balanced program with activities, resting time and plenty of nature exposure.” The most popular four-night exploration package includes naturalist-guided land visits to giant volcanic sinkholes and a trip to see 500-pound land tortoises in the wild. Herein lies the real beauty, because everything in the Galápagos is in the wild, untouched by humans, protected by the government and friendly as can be, so you can get up close and personal with it all. A highlight of the daily tours is a visit to Santa Fé Bay where sea lions give birth to their young, swim with snorkelers and sunbathe side-by-side on the sand. Bird-watching along the shoreline of Bartolomé to spot rare tropical penguins also tops the hits list. And for those sea excursions, Pikaia Lodge owns its own yacht, the M/Y Pikaia I, which is the only yacht in Galápagos with guest cabins permitted for day tours, so afternoons out on the water are hardly roughing
it. No matter what your pleasure, a unique honeymoon experience can be created accordingly. “Guests can plan for surf lessons, diving day trips, cycling programs, catch and release fishing, a day of hiking or simply take it easy and enjoy our spa and pool area,” Balfour suggests. If you want to experience the best that Mother Nature has given us, but from the comfort of an impeccably-designed hotel and matching yacht, then seeing the Galápagos Islands by land and sea with Pikaia Lodge is perfect for your post-wedding trip-of-a-lifetime. It’s also ideal for intimate destination wedding buyouts!

HONEYMOON HIDEAWAYS
pend your sweet escape at the intersection of Italy’s timeless romance and culinary heritage: the region of Emilia-Romagna. It’s a no-brainer that Italy is one of the world’s most romantic destinations, and for foodie couples, it’s nirvana. Rome, Florence and Venice might be your first choices for a post-wedding Italian getaway, but there’s good reason couples who identify as eating enthusiasts should head to the lesser-known region of EmiliaRomagna instead.
80
Many of the ingredients you love in Italian cooking, including ParmigianoReggiano cheese, balsamic vinegar, prosciutto and salami, and – of course – pasta, all have their origins in Northern Italy. The Slow Food movement started there, too, so there’s a dedication to authenticity and traditionalism that doesn’t always translate to the more tourist-trafficked areas of the country.
Meaning: You’ll be hard pressed to find “tourist menus” – and that’s a good thing. Here’s how to eat your way through Northern Italy and savor every bite, while taking in some of the region’s most romantic hidden gems and la dolce vita vistas. DAY 1-2: BOLOGNA There’s a reason the reasonably-sized city of Bologna has worn the nickname “The Fat One” for centuries. It’s said this is where pasta was invented, not to mention Bolognese sauce, which tops the thick ribbons of pappardelle native to the city. The Bolognese people take their traditions seriously and you’ll have to work hard to have a bad meal here. Start at the Mercato di Mezzo and stroll through the winding streets together, taking in the sights and smells where the city’s flavors are on full display. Stop and sample some thinly shaved mortadella, a pistachio-studded deli-style meat that’s destinationido.com
wholly underappreciated stateside, but that the Bolognese claim as a staple, especially atop crusty bread spread with creamy ricotta. It’s to die for, and the place to get it is local favorite restaurant Zerocinquantello. Order the mortadella as a starter and then the tortellini en brodo. The tiny cheese-stuffed pastas float alongside fat shavings of Parmigiano-Reggiano in a hearty chicken broth in this regional classic. Toast your union with a liter of semi-sweet, lightly fizzy Lambrusco wine, which you’ll find plentifully (and cheaply!) throughout Northern Italy. As a foodie couple, you’ll want to spend at least a day at the brand-new “food theme park” FICO Eataly World, about 20 minutes outside the city. It’s easy to get to – just take the shuttle bus that leaves every half-hour from Bologna Centrale train station. The building covers over a million square feet of space and is home to at least 25 restaurants, three of them with Michelin stars.

A FOODIE FANTASY IN
INSIDER TIPS
DAY 2-3: MODENA You might know food-forward Modena from the Netflix series “Master of None” and “Chef’s Table” and, since you’re planning your honeymoon well in advance, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to score a table at Osteria Francescana, the world’s second-best restaurant, according to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants organization. If that’s a little out of budget, not to worry. Almost anywhere you eat in Modena will be a special experience. Balsamic vinegar was invented and first sold in Modena, and the first producer, or acetaia, as they’re called, offers exceptional tours and tastings. Acetaia Giusti has been producing the vinegar since 1605, and is the oldest continuous producer in the world. Take home a bottle or two and have a taste to remember your honeymoon when you get home. A few minutes away, visit another temple to one of the area’s most-loved ingredients, Parmigiano-Reggiano. 4 Madonne Caseificio dell’Emilia was established in 1967, and now produces 75,000 wheels of the cheese each year. Take a fat hunk home with you – don’t worry, it can withstand lack of refrigeration and is perfectly fine to take on a plane. (Just remember to claim any food items at U.S. Customs.)
DAY 4-5: PARMA If you’ve guessed that ParmigianoReggiano cheese is partly named for this charming town, you’d be right. The other major ingredient to come from Parma is prosciutto di Parma, and the locals are extremely proud of their brand of ham. Taste it and other charcuterie from the region at the charcuterie museum by Villani, between Modena and Parma, and pick up a few bottles of two-Euro Lambrusco to take home from Setticani Winery, which has been producing the wine since 1923. The historic old city of Parma is centuries in the making and there’s plenty to eat and see, including the Gothic cathedral and Romanesque baptistry. Stop into the Pasticceria Torino, one of the oldest pastry shops in the area, for an espresso and a sfogliatelle, a flaky pastry covered in powdered sugar and stuffed with almond paste. For lunch, head to Degusteria Romani where locals pack the bar for cheese and charcuterie boards full of cured meats like culatello, coppa, pancetta, patanegra, spalla and, of course, prosciutto. Once the sun sets, take a trip back in time to Ristorante La Greppia, where white-coated waiters serve traditional Parmigiani favorites with a side of snark. These guys are the real deal and many have been serving here for decades. An ultra-vintage detail: women get a special white menu, without prices.
FALL & WINTER 2018
Make your escape easier with these pointers. RENT A CAR
After leaving Bologna, rent a car for the rest of your trip. Driving in Italy is no more difficult than driving in the U.S., minus the myriad roundabouts you’ll have to navigate. Google Maps works just fine and get your international driver’s license in about 45 minutes from your nearest AAA office. HIRE AN EXPERT
Want to get the most from your Italian eatabout? Tour companies like Modenatur in Modena will help you set up an eating itinerary that will net you the best bites in town, plus some insider tips for brag-worthy experiences, like a guided tour through the Mercato Albinelli. DINNER IS AN EVENT
Italians love dinnertime. So much so, in fact, that you shouldn’t be surprised if a meal out takes three or four hours. If you plan on attending the opera or another event in the evening, plan on eating afterward or have a picnic in the piazza instead so you don’t miss a minute.

A RESTORED
HONEYMOON HAVEN
I
f you’ve ever imagined a romantic honeymoon set in a castle on rolling emerald hills in Ireland, now is the perfect moment to Google, “Ashford Castle.” Fresh off the heels of a $75 million restoration, the storied destination shimmers with romantic possibilities for newlyweds. The property, formerly home to the Guinness family, is now part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection. “A honeymoon at Ashford Castle fulfills everyone’s dreams of a fairy tale romance in a castle,” said Ashford Castle’s General Manager Niall Rochford. “In addition to the luxurious surroundings, all guests are treated like royalty by our caring staff, creating memories of a lifetime.” As if a castle steeped in history, and dazzling under the lumens of 130 carefully curated new chandeliers isn’t enough, the restoration has added a 32-seat movie theater,
billiards room, cigar terrace, luxury lakeside cottage, boutique wine cellars for private dining and a spa. The glorious grounds of the 5-Star Ashford Castle are brimming with activities for couples to enjoy, including falconry, zip lining, golf, clay shooting, fishing, archery, horseback riding, tennis and billiards. After enjoying a bounty of activities, you will have earned your spot at one of the majestic dining options, graced by royalty and luminaries over the years. Delight in the splendor of the George V Dining Room, enjoy the ambiance at the steakhouse, The Dungeon, or indulge in Afternoon Tea in the elegant Connaught Room. Be sure to stop by the Wine Cellars where you can select from over 600 wines to toast your beloved. Grab some popcorn and watch “The Quiet Man” at the movie theater. The
classic film, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, was filmed at Ashford Castle. While you may not want to mirror their tumultuous love story, you can create your own romantic tale in one of the 83 restored castle rooms or suites or the Hideaway Cottage. Couples looking for a more affordable option will adore their time in one of the 64 luxurious guest bedrooms and unique suites at The Lodge at Ashford Castle. The good news is that Norwegian Air offers discount fares, including direct flights to Shannon out of Newburgh, New York. It’s the details that create the magic at Ashford Castle. Who could have imagined the red carnation Stanley Tollman wore in his lapel when he met Founder and President Bea Tollman in the 1950s, would one day be worn by everyone working in the Red Carnation Hotel Collection? Yes, fairy tales do come true, especially when the story starts in a castle.

The inspiration behind this Fashion Forward photo shoot came from Destination I Do’s Editor in Chief, Jennifer Stein, who wanted to see a ceremony and reception in the sand, without sacrificing high-end glamor. Oceanfront nuptials don’t have to equate to casual style and laid-back details. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with the boho style that has been saturating wedding trends for the past few years, we wanted to put a classic, modern spin on things. With our editor in chief’s idea in mind, a group of talented vendors took this inspiration and ran with it – creating a “Barefoot and Black Tie” event worthy of the chicest beach-goers.

avigating N ADVENTURES IN ETIQUETTE
NUPTIAL LANDMINES When one approaches their wedding, a myriad of situations could occur that cause you to ponder, “What is the right thing to do?” A few couples have shared some of the challenges they have encountered as they try to avoid etiquette “landmines.”
ADVENTURES IN ETIQUETTE
My best friend was planning her wedding last year when her venue suddenly went out of business. The venue refused to give them their deposit back. How can I protect myself from this happening with one of my vendors?
92
The best way to protect yourself from ‘fly by night’ establishments is to do your homework prior to signing any contracts. Check online reviews, better business ratings and referrals from people who have used the venue or vendor. Steer clear of businesses that are not substantiated by a positive reputation. Make sure your contract includes verbiage about deposit reimbursement in the event of the venue closing its doors or not being able to host your event. destinationido.com
I entered into the wedding planning process with the goal of remaining as stress-free as possible. While I know some things are outside of my control, there is a member of my bridal party who has been difficult from the start. She is causing me and the other bridal party members an immense amount of stress at every turn. Under what circumstances is it okay to “fire” a member of my bridal party and how do I break the news to her? Without knowing the specific issues that have arisen with this difficult bridal party member, I would initially try to have a one-on-one conversation in person with her. Perhaps you might begin by questioning her about what her

concerns are. Maybe you can figure out why she is being difficult. If she is not willing to work within the parameters and hopes you have for your event, or is unhappy with your wedding plans, you might ask her if she would prefer to “pull out.” Make sure you have this discussion either face-to-face or over the phone with her, as text and email can often create misunderstandings due to it being difficult to fully understand someone’s tone of voice. I am in the process of planning my destination wedding and I am really unsatisfied with one of my chosen vendors. They have been unresponsive to my emails and I am seriously considering hiring someone else. I feel like I should warn other couples about this company. When is it appropriate to leave a negative vendor review online? If you have been dealing with a vendor that has been unresponsive to emails, it would definitely be appropriate to find another business that you can work with. Leaving an online review would be appropriate. However, before you take action, try to get the vendor on the phone or over email to communicate your frustrations and to let them know your planned next steps, so they aren’t caught off-guard. This also gives them the opportunity to make things right.
One of the reasons my fiancé and I chose a destination wedding was to keep the guest list at a bare minimum. He has a large, extended family and it is not within our means to invite everyone. Do we have to invite all of our family or can we pick and choose? For example, can we invite some aunts and uncles and not others? When you consider your wedding guest list, it is important to be fair or you will definitely run the risk of hurt feelings within the respective families. If you invite some aunts and uncles, you should invite them all. The same would go for other categories of relatives...cousins, nieces and nephews, etc.. The best way to keep the numbers down for the actual destination wedding is to host an “at home reception” for all of the relatives who weren’t invited or couldn’t attend the actual wedding. There are many options for this type of event that can be less expensive. You can make it as casual or as formal as you would like. You might choose a theme linked to where you hosted your destination wedding. Including a video from the ceremony, cuisine from your wedding destination and displaying pictures from your destination wedding are all ways to recreate the event at home. An at-home reception can also provide an opportunity for your parents to host and invite their friends and the family who could not be included in the wedding. It’s also a fun excuse to get to wear your wedding attire again!
Is tipping my wedding vendors mandatory? Who is it customary to tip and how much? Should it be a flat amount or percentage based? Weddings can be costly events to host and gratuities are an added expense you’ll want to make sure you consider. It’s also important to make sure you’re giving gratuities that are customary. Some general gratuity guidelines to follow are: • Before you tip, check your contracts. Many venues and caterers outline what the gratuities are in the contract and as a line item in your final bill. Generally, business owners are not tipped. • For some vendors, it is optional to tip... reference our “cheat sheet” below for further explanation. • If a house of worship is used, donations are accepted, as well as $50-$100 for the officiant. • “Thank you” notes and positive online reviews are very appreciated by vendors and for all of those individuals who helped your wedding be a success...whether or not you tipped. • If you are planning an international destination wedding, it is very important to check the protocol in the country that you will be visiting. Tipping customs definitely vary from country to country.

atie and Dale are in the habit of celebrating by breaking out their passports. After Katie passed the Bar Exam, the two backpacked through Europe for a month. “We drove down the coast from Split to Dubrovnik and fell in love with Croatia’s small coastal towns and wonderful people,” says Katie. “Of all the places we traveled, Dubrovnik was our favorite, hands-down.” When the time came to say “I do,” the couple couldn’t imagine celebrating their union anywhere else. Throughout the planning process, there was one rule the couple abided by, no matter what. “We decided from day one that we wouldn’t do anything that didn’t feel like ‘us’ for the sake of keeping with tradition or because someone said we had to,” says the bride. The most important part of the couple’s wedding vision was that their event be calm, meaningful and intimate. With lots of friends and a large extended family, a destination wedding was the perfect guest list solution. When the wedding weekend finally arrived, Katie and Dale were accompanied by just 15 guests.
REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS
Old Town Dubrovnik consists of ancient, winding stone streets and the bride was concerned about navigating her way through the crowds en route to the ceremony. “As we started walking the streets, we were overwhelmed with love,” reminisces the bride. “People [visiting] from all over the world stopped what they were doing to watch us pass, showering us with well-wishes in all different languages, taking photos and videos and cheering as we walked by. It was as though everyone we crossed paths with knew and understood the importance of the day…” FALL & WINTER 2018

“Because we were legally married, the ceremony had to be done in Croatian. Hearing the words that marked the beginning of our marriage spoken in the language of the charming city we love so much felt surreal.”
The well-wishers lined the streets of Old Town all the way to the ceremony site at Sponza Palace. “When my dad and I took our first steps to enter the palace, the whole crowd cheered,” says Katie. “As soon as those big, beautiful doors closed behind me, the whole world went silent and all I could see was Dale waiting for me at the other end of the aisle.” It’s ironic that the couple wanted an intimate wedding above all else, but ended up celebrating with the entire town in tow. It was the perfect demonstration of the local culture the couple first fell in love with and it all added up to a day they will never forget.

mma and Baer’s Tennessee destination wedding centered around passion – compelling emotion and extravagant enthusiasm. These two sentiments were expressed both by the couple and by their team of talented vendors. It was the couple’s shared passion for food that caused them to select Blackberry Farm. They first discovered the venue on the Cooking Channel and immediately started researching it. As it turns out, the farm met their two main requirements. “We wanted a location where everyone could all stay together for the entirety of the weekend,” says Emma. “[Also,] food is one of our shared passions and we wanted a truly unforgettable dining experience for our wedding.”
99
While Emma and Baer’s loved ones were initially surprised, the decision made sense once the 180 guests arrived at the stunning location. After securing their venue, the couple utilized personal referrals and in-depth Internet searches to select their vendors. Once the dream team was in place, the bride and groom let them loose. “Our vendors made the wedding what it was,” says the couple. “We were woefully ambivalent about so many things. There are a million decisions to make and we didn’t have strong opinions on many of them. Having the team we did allowed us to defer to their expert opinions.”
REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS
The couple credits Lewis Miller Design for crafting their ceremony and reception spaces from scratch. “He built an incredible chuppah inside The Barn restaurant from blooming branches. By braiding the beams with flowers and greenery, Lewis transformed the whole restaurant into a truly sacred space.” The magic continued with Emma and Baer’s reception at Bramble Hall. “It looked like a secret forest in bloom, integrating the tables and stage, as well as several potted trees – all without looking busy or overwhelming.”

At the beginning of the planning process, Emma and Baer didn’t think they needed a wedding planner, but it was Jennifer Laraia Designs that brought together all of the passionate personalities. “As we approached the [wedding] date, we realized there was too much to coordinate,” reflects the couple. “Jennifer Laraia pulled it all together flawlessly.” In the end, this couple’s destination wedding was a fabulous fusion of their vision and their vendors’ expert execution. This one-of-a-kind wedding came from a unique story of falling in love. “We met in an anatomy lab during medical school,” laughs the couple, “which could sound sexy/cute in a geeky way if not for all the cadavers around us.” The two opted for a “same-sex take on an Indian wedding.” And “instead of a traditional ceremony, defined by gender norms, we opted for a non-denominational one officiated by two of our professors and great friends,” recalls the couple.

When it came time to select the destination for their wedding, it wasn’t a tough decision. “Tamarindo was sunny, warm and a reasonably priced place to throw the best week-long party for our family and friends,” explain the newlyweds. The two relied entirely on their event designer and wedding planner, Aimee Monihan, to make their dream of a big, “summer Gatsby-inspired” party a reality. “Our planning phone calls with her were often the highlight of our week,” the couple admits. “For two chill guys that ultimately just wanted to show up for an
amazing week-long party, things couldn’t have been much smoother. She not only exceeded our expectations, but became a good friend,” says the couple. To give you an idea of just how grand of a party the ceremony was, the grooms rode in on horses in traditional Indian fashion. The reception started in the evening with customized cocktails, a delicious poke bar and elaborate dessert bar. Guests enjoyed a four-course meal on one long dramatic table adorned with silver mirrored runners, black and gold accents and white florals, all

achel and Max went into the planning process with one goal in mind: create an intimate time with friends and family that would be cherished forever. Luckily, the duo was able to recruit the help of Rachel’s father, who quickly became their number one cheerleader and someone to help smooth out details. Since the couple did most of their planning from afar, their wedding planner, Jennifer with Imoni Events, was the boots on the ground and turned their vision of Arcadian elegance into reality.

On the day of the wedding, everything came together seamlessly. Vendors delivered a special scene with greenery and succulents everywhere, along with lanterns, candles and copper accents. “[The ceremony began] right as the sun was setting, which lit up the mountains in a way that stunned everyone,” the bride reminisces. “Although there were 170 people watching us, it felt intimate and more special than I could have imagined.”

“The theme was ‘rustic elegance.’ There was greenery and succulents (my favorite) everywhere, with lanterns, candles and copper accents. The venue was perfect – it felt right out of Tuscany.”
The two were able to maximize their desert destination wedding experience by kicking off Friday with a fiesta-themed welcome reception, giving guests full access to a hospitality suite and providing a hangout space stocked with food and drinks. They also held a Sunday brunch at a nearby restaurant before everyone left. “Just take it all in,” advise the newlyweds, “As everyone says, it goes by in the blink of an eye. So, every now and then, take a step back and appreciate the little, special and surprising moments.”

aving developed their love over a three-year, long-distance relationship, it’s safe to say distance was no match for Shruti and Arun. The two met in Philadelphia at a dinner hosted by a mutual friend, and even though Shruti took a job in Chicago that same week, the two understood their chemistry was too special not to pursue.
REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS
When it came time to tie the knot, the couple envisioned a destination wedding as special as their bond; which is exactly what they found in Point Clear, Alabama. The bride is from New Orleans and had some ties to the Gulf Shore area from spending summer vacations there as a girl, so the location just made sense. “We also wanted somewhere warm,” the two admitted.
110
The duo wanted their 250 guests to think of their wedding weekend as a vacation. So, they leaned on their wedding designer and planner, Ali Phillips of Engaging Events by Ali, to elevate their traditional Indian celebration to new heights. destinationido.com
“We have both been to a number of weddings in the cities we lived in and are from, so we wanted something a little different,” Shruti and Arun explained. Their unique event quickly became a weekend-long affair with a welcome party on Friday night that had a fun, Southern theme to tie-in the bride’s New Orleans roots. The wedding day started at 10 a.m. with the Baraat where the Groom was led to the wedding venue in an elaborate procession. The ceremony and a lavish luncheon followed where guests enjoyed quality time with one another, which Shruti loved.

Their family and friends were supportive of the plan and 96 guests joined the couple on their wedding day. The ceremony was held in front of the century-old barn as the sun set over the surrounding vineyards. Having a close friend serve as their officiant added a sentimental touch to an already meaningful ceremony. After Aaron and Annie
exchanged vows, their guests showered them with white rose petals. What makes this wedding extra-special is the way the couple combined a lovely, classic color scheme with unique and rustic details befitting of the barn setting. Such details included a photo booth bus and an antique truck that doubled as a mobile beer bar. Guests were treated to a gorgeous reception set-up with sophisticated table settings juxtaposed by laid-back tunes and decorative elements. “The Bryan Titus Trio kicked off the reception with destinationido.com

To thank their guests for coming, Annie and Aaron hosted a variety of pre- and post-wedding events including a meetand-greet at Solvang Brewing Company and a rehearsal dinner and brunch at Valley Piggery. As for advice, the couple kept it short and simple. “Make sure to make your wedding your own.”

and the ability to spend quality time with their guests. Once Kelly and Gavin discovered Villa Catignano in Tuscany, Italy, there was no looking back. “After visiting the venue, we were instantly sold,” says the bride. “The beauty of the property and landscape is captivating.” In order to best accommodate their guests, the couple gave them 18 months notice and also chose a date during school holidays. On the big wedding weekend, the couple was joined by nearly 70 guests in the Tuscan hills just outside of Siena. Villa Catignano proved
to be the ideal setting for the couple’s nuptials with the ceremony taking place in the lemon gardens and the reception held in a courtyard on the villa’s manicured grounds. The bride wanted to let the breathtaking scenery do the majority of the work for the ceremony, so the aisle was decorated simply with eucalyptus and baby’s breath. After the “I do’s,” the group celebrated in style. “With the stunning terracotta villa as a backdrop on one side and a view of Siena on the other, we opted for one long, rectangular table, so it
felt like a Tuscan family feast,” explains Kelly. The night was full of touching speeches and several courses of delicious cuisine. It was the personalized touches that made this couple’s reception extra-special. “There was a dessert bar filled with all of our favorites brought in from around the world,” says the bride. “We also had a fruit and cheese bar, wine from local vineyards and a wheelbarrow filled with beer!”
“Every part of our wedding day was a reflection of us; who we are, what is important to us and our passions. It is beautiful when all of that comes together and everyone [enjoys] it.”
The couple’s pre- and post-wedding events were just as customized, with a welcome picnic on Italian style blankets
