SUMMERHOUSE RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: ED & JOAN MILLER From the northeast, to Topsail Island and finally, home at Summerhouse, the Millers welcome us into their dream home. By Carrie Ray Davis
A
s I stood on the sidewalk to the Millers’ home, Joan waved me in with a huge smile on her face. I had met this family one year earlier at a Summerhouse weekend event but, with our crazy schedules, we hadn’t spoken since. As I entered their home, they introduced me to their son, Mark, and then, I made a confession: “This house is one of my all-time favorites in Summerhouse!” We settled into their sunroom, one of their favorite spots in the house and right away, I felt like I had known them for years. Ed and Joan celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last July. “We were set up on a blind date by a friend,” grins Ed. Seven months later, they were married. Joan stayed home with their sons, Mark and Matthew, while Ed kept them moving all over the Northeast—Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Hampshire. He retired from Seagram’s after 34+ years and has never looked back. With work taking Ed to North Carolina and a friend living here, they decided to retire in the Topsail area. “It was 1996 and nothing was here!” Ed chuckles. “Things have grown since the late 90’s.” They visited Summerhouse around 2007 and saw the potential but had built their home 10 years earlier and couldn’t see moving again. When they heard about a Summerhouse event in the Spring of 2019, they decided to take another look and, as they say, the rest is history! The Millers toured Summerhouse, explored models, and took in the waterfront views. Once they stepped into the Westbury built by Legacy Homes by Bill Clark, they knew this home would be their final one. Son, Mark, chimes in, “The pool made it a no brainer!” The Millers made the move that July.
Joan and Ed celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last year.
The Millers came to an open house event in Spring of 2019 and spent the day touring exploring model homes, and taking in the waterfront views. Joan showed me around her beautifully decorated home as we ran from room to room pointing out our favorite details. The sunroom is Joan’s favorite room. Mark loves the front porch: “I like sitting on the porch and listening to the rain without getting wet.” Ed’s favorite spot? “It has to be the pergola deck in the Summer!” he says. After our talk, Joan announced lunch. The kitchen table was fit for royalty and I gushed over her china and the wraps she made. The neat bench storage seats in their breakfast nook created extra and cozy seating. We continued to eat and laugh...and enjoy our newly re-discovered friendship.
