DISTINCTION FOR ECO GREEN FLAG

SUPPORTING THE FLOODS CRISIS IN SPAIN

We are delighted to announce that Luckley House School has been awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction 2024, the highest award available from this worldrenowned sustainable education programme.

MFL Teacher, Miss Intxaurbe held a fundraising initiative to provide emergency aid for survivors of Storm Dana in Spain, focusing on the town of Utiel—hometown of Miss GarciaGomez, a former Photography Teacher at Luckley House.

A school bake sale was a resounding success, alongside generous donations to an online giving page, raising an incredible £1,151.15.

Miss Intxaurbe extends heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Kayanja (Elijah’s mum) for creating a beautifully crafted, professionally decorated large chocolate bauble. The ‘guess the weight’ competition drew enthusiastic participation from pupils. The closest guesses were Maya D (550g), Lacey B (545g), and James M (532g). With an actual weight of 547g, Lacey B was declared the winner! She took home the chocolate bauble, while the runners-up each received a chocolate bar.

Well done to Mrs Clutterbuck and all the pupils and staff from across the school involved in this fantastic team effort!

LUCKLEY JOINS BOARDING ORCHARD Mr Walker from the Boarding Schools’ Association visited Luckley to plant a tree outside the Sixth Form Centre as part of an initiative to create the world’s largest geographically distributed orchard.

The project encourages schools to engage their pupils in tree planting to support environmental sustainability.

ROTARY YOUNG MUSICIAN SUCCESS!

A ‘CHALLENGING’ START OF TERM FOR YEARS 7 & 9 PUPILS Year 7 pupils began their journey at Luckley with a memorable day at the Oakwood Outdoor Activities Centre, packed with exciting team-building activities. Working in groups, they tackled challenges such as archery, high and low ropes courses, the leap of faith, and mountain boarding. Mrs Esther Brown, Head of Section (Lower School), was delighted to see the pupils forming new friendships and supporting one another throughout the day.

Year 9 pupils had an exciting visit to Horseshoe Lake Activity Centre in Sandhurst early in the autumn term. Despite the weather, they enjoyed a fantastic day filled with a variety of activities that encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones and tackle new challenges. The instructors praised their exemplary behaviour, making it a memorable and rewarding way to conclude the first week of the term.

SPRING 2023

YEAR 7 & 8 TAKE TO THE ICE IN WINDSOR Excitement was in the air as Year 7 and 8 pupils took to the ice at Windsor On Ice for a fun afternoon of skating and laughter. The visit proved to be a perfect combination of festive cheer and energetic activity.

YEAR 9 & 10 CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA On Monday 9 December Year 9 and 10 pupils kicked off the holiday season with an exciting Christmas Extravaganza! This funfilled event was a perfect way to celebrate their hard work this term and spend time together before the Christmas break.

The festivities began with pupils participating in a lively Christmas quiz, testing their knowledge of all things festive. Both year groups also had the chance to win prizes through a special achievement point raffle, celebrating the impressive number of points they’ve accumulated this term.

COPPER IS FEELING FESTIVE! Copper, the much-loved school dog has enjoyed the run-up to Christmas, joining in with many of the festivities.

To cap off the event, all students gathered to enjoy a screening of the heartwarming Christmas movie Nativity! The film perfectly captured the joyful essence of the season, leaving everyone feeling festive and full of holiday cheer.

The Christmas Extravaganza was a wonderful way to end the term, allowing students to reflect on their achievements, bond with friends, and embrace the festive spirit.

FESTIVE MARKET TRIP FOR YEAR 11 On Thursday 28 November, Year 11 pupils marked the end of a busy term with a well-earned visit to the Winchester Christmas Market where they were eager to spend the afternoon immersed in festive cheer, good company, and a bit of holiday shopping.

The market, with its charming wooden chalets and sparkling lights, provided the perfect backdrop for Year 11 to relax and get into the Christmas spirit. Pupils enjoyed browsing unique gifts, handcrafted decorations, and indulging in delicious seasonal treats.

The stunning view of Winchester Cathedral added to the magic of the afternoon, making it a truly special experience.

This outing was a wonderful way for Year 11 to unwind after a busy term of assessments, reminding everyone of the importance of taking time to enjoy the season and celebrate with friends. A big thank you to the tutors who joined the trip and helped make the day so memorable.

CELEBRATING OUR SCHOLARS Two prestigious events welcomed our new scholars to Luckley and celebrated the talent and potential of these students.

YEAR 7 EVENING

YEAR 9 & 12 EVENING

It was a memorable evening designed to officially enrol the scholars and inspire them for their journey ahead.

The evening began with a warm reception in the Whitty Theatre foyer, where scholars mingled over welcome drinks. A sumptuous dinner in Drake Hall followed, complemented by exceptional musical performances by Sixth Form students, Aurelia B, Imogen H, and Tara T-K. James B also captivated the audience with his insightful EPQ presentation.

The evening began with a three-course meal, expertly served by Sixth Form students. Following this, guest speaker and Olympic athlete Victoria Ohuruogu delivered a powerful talk about her journey to the Paris Olympics, highlighting patience and perseverance as keys to success. Scholars were then presented with their badges and journals by Mrs Bizior or their respective Heads of Departments. The dinner was both celebratory and motivational, leaving scholars inspired to excel.

Year 7 Scholar, Harry L said: “The highlight for me was listening to Victoria Ohuruogu’s speech where she described her difficult journey to get to the recent Paris Olympics. Her story was incredibly interesting and it has made me want to perform to the best of my ability.”

The highlight was a keynote speech by Ryan Raghoo, athlete and Paralympian, who shared his inspiring journey of resilience and determination in the face of challenges.

Year 9 Scholars Evelyn B and Teddy C commented: “The highlight of the evening for us was hearing Ryan Raghoo’s inspirational story. We found it very motivating, and it really showed that you shouldn’t let others put you down and to persevere. Even when it may seem impossible to”.

CELEBRATING EXCEPTIONAL ART

TRIUMPH AT ROTARY YOUTHSPEAKS

The Scholars' Dinners this year featured an impressive exhibition of student work, held in the Whitty Foyer, highlighting the incredible artistic talent at Luckley House. The display included exemplary pieces from across all year groups, celebrating the creativity and skill of students. Art scholars also showcased their pieces on the theme of "Technology: Past, Present, Future," where each student interpreted the theme in their own unique way. The exhibition allowed students to experiment with various media, resulting in a diverse and thought-provoking collection of artwork that demonstrated the breadth of artistic expression at Luckley.

Congratulations to both the Intermediate and Senior debate teams who competed in the Rotary Youthspeaks competition at Yateley Manor and won overall. There was a wide range of topics and stiff competition but our Luckley debate teams are now through to the district final next year. The Intermediates were represented by Catherine A, Tilly B and Victoria H whilst the Seniors were represented by Amani K, Trinity M and Jess M.

ANNUAL ENRICHMENT FAIR HIGHLIGHTS CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES ON OFFER At the start of term we held our annual Enrichment Fair to showcase all the clubs and activities on offer. Our diverse and engaging enrichment programme runs from Monday to Thursday, offering pupils the chance to explore new interests and uncover hidden talents. Updated each term with fresh activities, the programme provides something for everyone. Participation is encouraged for all pupils, ensuring a wide range of opportunities to suit every interest. As part of the programme, supervised prep sessions are available, allowing pupils to complete their homework in a supportive and relaxed setting.

LEST WE FORGET

EDUCATING ABOUT TESTICULAR CANCER

The Luckley community came together on 11 November for our annual Remembrance Service, a solemn occasion led by Reverend Rob Wynford-Harris, the Senior Prefect Team, Mr Adam Hartley, Mr Ian Cross, and the CCF cadets. The service featured poignant musical performances by our talented students, with Mr Ellwood delivering a moving rendition of the Last Post.

It was a pleasure to welcome the OddBalls charity for al presentation to our Year 9 students and older on testicular cancer. They provided valuable insights into their incredible initiatives and shared numerous ways we can support their cause.

The session was both informative and engaging, offering our pupils essential knowledge on the subject.

AN ENGAGING INSIGHT INTO GOVERNANCE Politics students were delighted to welcome Mr Cross, a parent at the school and a member of the Civil Service, for an insightful talk. Mr Cross shared the story of his career journey, highlighting the fascinating and diverse roles he has undertaken.

During the session, he captivated the group with discussions on the dynamics of power within the Prime Minister's office and Cabinet, as well as the critical role the Civil Service plays during governmental transitions. His ability to engage the students while remaining politically neutral made the experience both informative and inspiring.

The students were encouraged to think critically about the intricacies of governance and public administration, gaining valuable insights into a field that often operates behind the scenes.

GEOGRAPHY FIELDWORK IN DORSET

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr Cross for generously sharing his expertise and time, leaving the group enriched and inspired.

Year 13 Geography students spent four days in Dorset experimenting with a range of fieldwork techniques.

They measured changes in the sand dunes at Studland Bay, investigated a range of coastal management techniques in Swanage and surveyed land use changes and deprivation in Poole.

The students were fortunate to work with Barry Cullimore (GeoFieldwork Ltd) who has a wealth of A Level fieldwork experience and expert knowledge of this coastline.

They also spent time collecting data independently which will be used in the production of their Geography coursework. This is worth 20% of their final A Level grade.

The fieldwork will also enhance their knowledge of coastal landscapes and urban change, which are key exam topics.

ART SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT - NOAH, 9H

CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION The highly anticipated Luckley House Christmas Card Competition saw an impressive number of entries this year, with the competition proving fiercer than ever. After much deliberation, Clara G emerged as the winner with her stunning watercolour design, which was featured as Mrs Bizior's official Christmas card. Henry R also received a Headmistress's Commendation for his skillful submission, earning recognition for his artistic talent. Both Clara and Henry were awarded Amazon vouchers in celebration of their outstanding work.

"Thank you for choosing me for the Scholars spotlight! I have been creating art for a long time now and I have found that some of my favourite mediums are collage, graphite, soft and oil pastel, acrylic and lastly oil paints. Some of the artists that I’m inspired by are Chuck Close, David Hockney, Franz Hals and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Although these artists are not my only inspiration, Music is a huge part of my art it has inspired some of my biggest and favourite pieces to date. In my spare time I paint commissions for friends, family and clients."

‘LUCKLEY CREATES’ 'Luckley Creates' enrichment club, has provided pupils with a fantastic space to explore their creativity this autumn. Pupils have created vibrant pumpkins inspired by the work of artist Yayoi Kusama, mixed media portraits, crafted intricate origami and oil pastel eyes, and used masking tape to produce striking abstract acrylic paintings. The club fosters a variety of artistic techniques and encourages pupils to experiment with different mediums. Many have also used the time to work on their personal art portfolios.

UNIVERSITY OFFERS FOR UPPER SIXTH STUDENTS! Headmistress, Mrs Bizior has had a very busy time this term meeting with all Year 13 students to go through their personal statements and supporting them with submitting their UCAS applications. We are delighted with the success so far!

Anne’s love of Science is longstanding and she is hoping to read Biological Sciences at university. Anne has applied to a fabulous array of universities including Imperial, Bristol and UCL.

Amelia is an exceptional academic who invests much of her time supporting others, not only here at Luckley, but through her wide ranging volunteer work at local charities and hospitals.

Seb hopes to read Business and Management and has already received four offers, including his first choice university. As an All-Round Scholar and House Captain, Seb has much to offer beyond his star-filled academic grades.

George aspires to read Artificial Intelligence at university and already has all his offers; including one to an overseas university and other top Russell Group institutions. George is also an accomplished musician and regularly works as a life guard.

Jon sent off his application to read Maths/Physics and Natural Sciences and already holds an offer from King’s College. Not only an academic, Jon has proven talented on the pitch and on the stage too.

Deputy Head Student Imogen sent off her UCAS application to read Music. She also studies at the Junior Royal College of Music and is the principal clarinet in the Berkshire Youth Orchestra. Imogen has offers to King’s College and Manchester.

Helge has applied to a number of top universities to study Biomedical Science including Bath, Bristol, Southampton, Surrey and Warwick and already holds three fantastic offers.

Ivy sent her UCAS application off to five superb universities to read Biology. Ivy is taking four A Levels and an EPQ and has submitted an outstanding application.

Head Student Ella was the first to send off her UCAS application, to read English.

She has already secured four offers to Russell Group universities.

With incredible achievements across the board it is no wonder Aiden received all his offers from Russell Group universities to read Physics, just a few days after sending off his application!

Emily, one of the Deputy Head Students, sent off a fantastic application to read Psychology, with four offers, including to Russell Group universities.

Daisy submited her UCAS application and received three offers to study Forensic Psychology just one week after sending it!

Henry sent off a wonderful UCAS application. Before the week was out, he had secured all the offers he was looking for to read Business and Management.

Tabby sent off her UCAS application to read Psychology and had three offers in less than two days - including to Russell Group universities!

Summer received five offers in one day - amazing! She is pursuing a career in Sport (particularly Football) Management.

CAROL SERVICE On Thursday 5 December we held the annual Luckley Carol Service at All Saints Church in Wokingham. It was the perfect way to end the term and get everyone in the Christmas spirit. The School choirs led the singing, along with traditional Bible readings and a variety of charming Christmas poems read by pupils from across the school. A thought-provoking address was given by Frankie Knight, who runs the Luckley Bible and Cake Club..

‘TIME OF OUR LIVES’

JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY & CULTURE

A poweful exploration of friendship, loss and resilience

At the end of October, A Level Classics students, joined by other Sixth Formers, embarked on an inspiring four-day trip to Rome.

The visit allowed the Classics students to engage directly with key elements of their curriculum.

Year 11 GCSE Drama pupils performed 'Time of our lives' for their Drama devised exam.

A group of school friends. An accident. A death. A reunion.

How do a group of young people cope in the face of adversity?

Ten years on, a group of teenage friends meet at their school reunion where they have to revisit the loss of one of their friends.

Has everyone moved on? Is everyone’s life as wonderful as they would have you believe? Is everyone really ok with what life throws at them?

Highlights included the Ara Pacis, an impressive marble altar symbolizing peace, Augustus’ Mausoleum, and the Res Gestae, Augustus’ self-authored account of his achievements. They also marveled at the Prima Porta statue, Augustus’ Forum, and the Temple of Mars Ultor, a grand sanctuary dedicated to the god Mars. Seeing these historic sites in person was a remarkable experience, bringing to life what they had only studied in photographs.

With clear blue skies and warm sunshine, the weather was ideal for exploring Rome’s other iconic sites, including the Vatican and Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Palatine Archaeological Park, and the Capitoline Museums. Local favorites like pizza, pasta, sorbet, and gelato delighted everyone’s taste buds, and even a traditional Roman stew made its way onto the menu.

Beautiful weather, remarkable sites, and delicious food made the entire experience perfetto!

CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES

Reflecting on a Fantastic Term!

On Friday 6 December, we celebrated Christmas Jumper Day with pupils showing off a delightful array of festive jumpers during a lively morning break parade. The winners were revealed at the end-of-term assembly, with a range of awards given for different festive categories.

This term has been full of exciting events and milestones for our school community.

Our Quiz Night brought together families and staff for an evening of friendly competition, laughter and great food. Creative team names and challenging trivia kept everyone entertained, with Legless Smiths emerging victorious!

The Lower School Disco was a highlight for our younger pupils, who enjoyed dancing to the DJ’s lively playlist. There were lots of treats that added to the fun, and we’re grateful to the volunteers who made the event a success.

We were also thrilled to announce the launch of our Online Second-Hand Uniform Sales, which has been met with fantastic feedback. Over 46 orders were received, helping families save money while promoting sustainability. The user-friendly platform made it easier than ever to participate.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and enthusiasm to these events—we couldn’t have done it without you!

CADETS SHINE IN BRECON BEACONS

SIXTH FORM BLACK TIE DINNER

Luckley cadets, alongside cadets from Reddam House, participated in the prestigious Rifles Cadet Cup, a demanding three-day competition held in the Brecon Beacons at the Sennybridge Training Area. Under the guidance of trainers from ITC Catterick, the cadets developed their fieldcraft skills before being rigorously tested and assessed on their newly acquired knowledge.

Our Sixth Form students enjoyed a glamorous Black Tie Dinner this term. The night began with drinks and canapés, setting the stage for a sumptuous meal of steak and chips, followed by an indulgent chocolate brownie topped with strawberries, marshmallows, and ice cream—expertly prepared and served by our talented Luckley House Catering Team.

Mr Hartley is delighted to announce that a mixed team of Luckley and Reddam cadets secured first place, with our second mixed team achieving an impressive fourth place.

Congratulations to all the cadets who took part! Your resilience and determination shone through in the face of both a tough competition and challenging conditions.

The atmosphere was buzzing as students and staff had fun with an energetic karaoke session. The room came alive with singing, dancing, and enthusiastic cheering, making each performance a highlight of the evening. It was truly a night to remember! A heartfelt thank you to the Senior Prefect Team for organising this spectacular event and to Deputy Head Student Emily F for overseeing the creative vision for the evening.

BOARDING NEWS

By Mr David Rose, Head of Boarding This term, boarding at Luckley has been lively and dynamic, with growing numbers of both weekly and full-time boarders, complemented by our regular and occasional flexi boarders.

Our activities programme kept the boarders engaged with a variety of fun events throughout the week, including Christmas gingerbread house decorating, baking, portrait painting, and quizzes. They have also made regular use of the music rooms and sports hall.

At weekends, the boarders have enjoyed a range of exciting outings, such as visiting the Birmingham Christmas markets, taking on Escape Rooms, and exploring the Paradox Museum in London.

LUCKLEY COMMUNITY SUPPORTS FOODBANK This Christmas, we chose to support Wokingham Foodbank with a 'Reverse Advent Calendar,' and thanks to the incredible generosity of our Luckley community, we were able to donate 154.8kg of food!

During a season when families come together to celebrate, it’s truly heartwarming to see such compassion for those facing difficult times, especially with the rising cost of living. Wokingham Bronze Group Foodbank has been under immense pressure, with demand stretching their resources. However, your contributions have made a real impact, helping them stay prepared for the challenges ahead and ensuring that those in need can enjoy festive treats and Christmas cheer.

AUTUMN TERM IN LUCKLEY LIBRARY By Mrs Debbie Godfrey, Library Manager DYSLEXIA AWARENESS WEEK

HARRY POTTER DAY

In recognition of Dyslexia Awareness Week the Library hosted a Drop-In Clinic for those pupils struggling with reading and books.

We were able to show them a range of tools to help, including the RNIB Reading Services, Immersive and Natural Reader functionality, coloured dyslexia reading bookmarks as well as our large range of over 70 Barrington Stoke-published titles, which are specially designed to be dyslexia-friendly reads.

Bloomsbury, publishers of the Harry Potter series, celebrate the now iconic wizard each October and this year the Library joined in the fun. The breaktime quiz was a huge hit, with many Potter fans scoring full marks, and Ms Morgan ran a variety of wizarding craft activities over lunchtime to celebrate this wonderful fantasy series.

FRIDAY COLOURING CLUB WITH MRS ROBINSON

Our Year 7 pupils were thrilled to receive their free brand new books, care of the BookTrust Bookbuzz scheme, which Luckley Library participates in each year. The excellent initiative offers a selection of 16 fantastic teen titles to choose from, all of which are also added to our borrowing stock. This curated collection ensures our readers have access to a superb offering of new books by brilliant authors, and is a demonstration of our commitment to reading for pleasure at Luckley House.

The Library has been delighted to host a Luckley Colouring Club which was launched this term to great success. Ran by Mrs Robinson, our fabulous Assistant SENDCo, the Club provides an opportunity for students across the school to engage in this excellent mindful activity on a Friday lunchtime, enjoying the benefits of some quiet time out amongst likeminded peers in the relaxing environment of the Library.

SUPPORTING DYSLEXIA AWARENESS WEEK

This term we were delighted to reconnect with Sally Calcott, class of 1982, whose life has taken her to the vast landscapes of Western Canada. Sally lives with her husband on their 1600acre farm rearing cows and growing a variety of crops. One of their proudest achievements is supplying wheat to Warburtons, used in the brand’s premium UK loaves. Sally’s career has been as diverse and fulfilling as her life experiences. Once a solicitor specialising in child protection, today Sally is a certified internal auditor at Westoba Credit Union Bank. Spare time is spent with friends and family, horse riding and caring for her horses. Life on the farm is good.

Throughout Dyslexia Awareness Week Luckley’s SEN department showcased the positive outcomes of those living with Dyslexia, including alumna Emily Perridge, class of 2017 and Victoria Button, class of 2002. Both have settled into successful creative roles despite the many challenges they faced at school and beyond. Emily is an Analyst and Solution Consultant at Rimes – managing projects, running workshops and developing communications. Victoria is Digital Marketing Strategist for a global manufacturing company and writes content every day, from digital campaigns to press releases and newsletters. Rather than a hinderance, Dyslexia has proven a superpower.

REACHING RWANDA

This autumn Alina Shaw, class of 2024, returned to lead a twopart needlework workshop designed to inspire current Year 10 Textiles pupils. Starting a degree in Hand Embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court Palace, Alina came brimming with enthusiasm for the craft. She showcased what can be achieved using some basic hand embroidery stitches, teaching pupils back stitch, chain stitch, wagon wheel stitch and French knots. Alina’s visit was a reminder of how passion and dedication can transform simple threads into intricate art.

In October we had the honour of welcoming back alumna Samantha Hunt MBE, Head Student from the class of 1986 and an Academic Scholar throughout her seven years at Luckley.

Sam delivered an inspiring lecture on her initiative, “Reaching Rwanda,” which has brought hope and essential support to thousands of Rwandan genocide survivors.

Deputy Headteacher at Sandhurst School and Chair of the Survivors Fund, Sam has raised £300,000, rebuilding two villages, opening a large-scale education centre for over 1000 orphans as well as providing water wells, livestock, job opportunities and training to those in need.

Sam also offers senior students the opportunity to travel with her and experience life changing work.

SPORTS UPDATE

YEAR 7 NETBALL TEAMS Our Year 7 Netball Teams recently took part in the U12 SE Berks League. The C team came 2nd over all. They all played brilliantly.

RUGBY UNDER THE LIGHTS We are incredibly proud of the 1st VX rugby team's performance in the annual St Joseph's Cup against St Joseph's. Despite just missing out on the cup, the players showed outstanding commitment and resilience, fighting hard from start to finish and nearly turning the game around in the closing moments. A huge well done to the entire squad for an exceptional effort!

U13 HOCKEY TEAM Congratulations to the Luckley Girls' Hockey Team who placed 2nd in the U13 ISA Hockey Festival held at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. The team had a fantastic day and Emmeline C was named as Coach’s Player.

ADP PARTNERSHIP WITH TRAIN BODY SMART We are delighted to be working with Train Body Smart LTD, experts in bridging the gap between Strength and Conditioning and Personal Training. Our Intermediate ADP pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit Train Body Smart, where they explored cutting-edge, research-backed training tools designed to enhance athletic performance, movement quality, overall health, and body composition.

U14 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM Our U14 Girls began their Berkshire Basketball League season in style with a fantastic performance against Bohunt School. Led by their captain, Matilda, every player contributed significantly to the game, showcasing great teamwork and determination.
