LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES Lockwood & Co series by Jonathan Stroud You’ve read all the Harry Potter books? (several times) You’ve seen the films (dozens of times!) So what next? May I introduce you to the magical world of Lucy, Anthony and their magical team. Lockwood & Co are a Psychic Investigations Agency. You see, for the past 50 years the dead have been coming back to haunt the living and when they do agencies like Lockwood & Co are called in to deal with these dangerous apparitions. But it is only kids and teenagers that are able to see and do battle with these ghosts so each agency is made up of a young workforce overseen by an adult. However, there is no adult overseer to be found at the rather ramshackle agency run by the charismatic Anthony Lockwood and when young Lucy Carlyle arrives in London hoping for a notable career she finds herself immediately embarking on her first case. But the case goes horribly wrong and the agency is left with one last chance to redeem itself. Unfortunately, this involves spending the night in one of the most haunted houses in England, and trying to escape alive… So begins book one in this magical series. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this as much as I did. Nichiless Dey – Teacher of Science

MUSIC UPDATE

MEASURING BIODIVERSITY

Year 7 Royal Philharmonic Composition Workshop Last week we hosted a composition workshop led by members of the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra. Year 7 pupils worked alongside pupils from Bohunt school playing and composing their own piece. The hall was filled with over 50 musicians all having a great time creating music together. A wonderful experience was had by all.

in Luckley House Woods

This week in Science we have been measuring how biodiverse the woods at Luckley House are. Year 10 pupils were asked to use quadrats to measure the population density of various plant and animal species in the woods. Our conclusion was that not only are the woods extraordinarily beautiful this time of year, but they are home to a hugely diverse and healthy population of plants and animals from bluebells to oak trees, bees to squirrels. Phil Lupton, Head of Science

Music Exams We are really pleased to announce that Year 13 student Arissa P achieved Grade 6 Singing, with distinction and Year 7 pupil Trinity M Grade 4 Musical Theatre, with distinction. Well done to both girls. The Summer concert-’An Evening of Rock, Pop and Jazz’ Please note that the date of this concert has changed to Friday 17 June at 7pm

THE IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE SKILLS Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils were pleased to welcome David Binns, UK Director of Sanako, to Luckley on Wednesday afternoon. David talked about his experiences growing up on a council estate in Leeds and how a GCSE in French helped shape his career and lead him to learn other languages, as well as become a successful businessman. David left us with the message that businesses are increasingly looking for applicants with language skills, and that GCSE MFL is good; A level even better! Hannah Molloy, Head of MFL

SPORT UPDATE - The Athlete Development Progamme The ADP has gone from strength to strength over the past term. We followed a holistic focus to the lunchtime sessions covering a wide range of movements from wall reaction drill to gymnastic floor rolls. We also premiered the ADP Combine with members of the ADP across all tiers, joined by other Luckley pupils engaging across four extended days. The Combine is made of six tests with results aggregated to produce our Combine Superstars. Our first test was the 20m sprint and our speed king and queen are Year 9s Laurence H and Alice W.

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY International Dance Day on 29 April was celebrated with hip hop and contemporary dance workshops for our Year 7 and 8 pupils. It was a meeting of dancers and dance styles, with Luckley's own professional dancer, Rachel Kempton dancing alongside Luckley alumni, Megan Varey. Dance is a great means of selfexpression, known to break down cultural barriers and is beneficial for body and mind. To find out more about Dance as a GCSE option download our GCSE Choices Booklet 2022-24.

LUCKLEY LITERARY REVIEW Many thanks to all of the pupils across the school who contributed pieces of creative writing to our Easter edition of The Luckley Literary Review. As a department, we are thrilled to be able to share these pieces with the wider school community. As ever, it proved very challenging to narrow down a small selection of the entries to single them out for prizes, but I am delighted to say that we managed in the end and book tokens will be finding their way to Sophie (Year 9), Aiden (Year 10), Alicia (Year 10) and Alina (Year 11). We look forward to being able to share more examples of the fantastic work produced by our students in the final edition for the year. Darshan Bahbra, Head of English
