Hello everyone, Copper here!

What a pawsome end of term it’s been! I’ve had my tail wagging with all the excitement across the School.

Christmas Jumper Day saw so many bright, fluffy jumpers! I wanted to chew a few pompoms, but I behaved, mostly.

I was also helpful in finding the Senior Santa Team – I sniffed them out in record time! My nose never fails.

Christmas Lunch with Turkey smells everywhere. I was on my best begging behavior and managed to get some tasty pigs in blankets.

My ears were treated to the beautiful sounds of the Carol Service and Winter Concert – such talent we have at Luckley.

In addition to all the other things in this edition of Luckley Life, we really do have so many clever humans doing amazing things. I did try to join the House Chess Competition but apparently chewing pieces is not allowed!

What a term! I’ve loved every moment- thank you for all the pats, cuddles, and sneaky treats.

Here’s to more adventures next term!

Christmas Jumper Day

Our annual Christmas Jumper Day was full of festive cheer, with pupils, staff and even the school dogs embracing the season in colourful jumpers! The much-loved Christmas Jumper Day parade brought smiles all around, Donations from the event went to the Helen & Douglas Trust and Save the Children. We raised circa £336 for these worthwhile causes.

Pupils Hunt Down the Senior Santa Team Pupils enjoyed a festive challenge with the ‘Find the Senior Santa Team’! The Santas hid around the school, each carrying a different raffle ticket. Pupils raced to find them all and hand in their tickets to claim a prize. However, the mischievous Grinch was on the hunt too, trying to snatch their tickets along the way! Congratulations to Randle House on winning the event!

A Very Merry Christmas Lunch The whole school gathered to enjoy a delicious traditional Christmas lunch on the final day of term, complete with roast turkey, all the trimmings, crackers and plenty of Christmas jokes shared around the tables. Our catering team pulled out all the stops to create a festive atmosphere that brought everyone together.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs Esther Brown, Head of Lower School

Year 7 Oakwood Climbing Team Building Year 7 enjoyed an adventurous day at Oakwood Climbing Centre, taking on high ropes, the zip wire, crate stacking and indoor bouldering. A highlight was the silent teamwork challenge, where pupils had to communicate using only gestures to complete an obstacle course, learning the importance of patience, problem-solving and supporting one another. It was a fun and rewarding trip that helped strengthen friendships and encouraged pupils to step outside their comfort zones. View the full album here.

Skating into Christmas: Years 7 & 8 at Windsor on Ice Years 7 and 8 pupils enjoyed a festive outing to Windsor on Ice. They explored the charming Christmas market stalls before taking to the ice rink for some skating fun. Afterwards, they returned to school to warm up with a well-deserved hot chocolate.

Year 8 Pizza, Games and Movie Night Year 8 had a fantastic evening at their Pizza, Games and Movie Night in September! It was the perfect way to round off their first full week back at school, with laughter, teamwork and plenty of friendly competition during the games. Pupils then relaxed together to enjoy a film and, of course, a generous helping of pizza! A brilliant evening that brought everyone together and set a great tone for the term ahead.

Cultural Connections Across the Globe!

Our Year 7 pupils had an amazing opportunity to collaborate with students from Baeksan Middle School in South Korea during their Life Skills lessons this term, all via Zoom! Together, they explored daily life in each other’s schools, shared elements of British and Korean culture, and took part in the exciting project “Show Us Our Culture!” With the Students from South Korea introducing us to beautiful traditional norigae ornaments Then both groups created their very own norigae as a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange! A wonderful experience of global learning, creativity, and connection.

In the second cross-cultural lesson exchange our Year 7 History pupils learned about the Donghak Peasant Revolution, presented their own work on the Norman Conquest, and spent time in breakout groups discussing school life in both countries.

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS

Mr Matt Humphrey, Head of Upper School

Year 9 & 10 Christmas Extravaganza Years 9 and 10 enjoyed a festive end-of-term celebration with games, prizes and lots of fun! The afternoon began with Christmas-themed quizzes and group games, followed by an Achievement Points Raffle, where pupils had the chance to win a selection of prizes. Everyone then gathered for supper, before settling down to watch Home Alone complete with popcorn and sweets. It was a wonderful way for pupils to unwind together and start the Christmas season.

Year 11 Christmas Trip to Blenheim Palace Year 11 enjoyed a festive trip to Blenheim Palace, where they explored the Christmas Market, sampled seasonal treats and took to the ice for an evening skate. Some pupils also embraced the festive spirit with a ride on the traditional merry-go-round, making it a memorable celebration to round off the term.

Year 9 ‘It’s a Knockout’ Team Building Day Year 9 kicked off their upper school journey with an ‘It’s a Knockout’ Team Building Day on the sports field.

With a whole host of inflatable challenges and foam-filled games the pupils threw themselves into every activity and were a real credit to the school.

The event was a fantastic way to build friendships within tutor and year groups. A BBQ lunch from our brilliant catering team was the perfect ending to a wonderful morning.

Year 11 Geography Fieldwork Our Year 11 GCSE Geographers visited the coastal town of Littlehampton, West Sussex, to explore coastal processes and assess the effectiveness of local coastal management strategies. Experiencing Geography firsthand allows pupils to consolidate their classroom learning and see its application in the real world. This was the first of several fieldwork opportunities planned for our geographers this academic year.

Year 9 Battlefields Trip to Ypres Year 9 enjoyed a powerful day of immersive learning in Ypres as part of their English and History studies. Pupils visited key First World War sites including Lijssenthoek Cemetery, the Bayernwald trench system, Langemarck German Cemetery, the Hooge Crater Museum and Tyne Cot. A particularly poignant moment came at the Menin Gate, where the group laid a wreath in memory of Hugo W’s great-great-grandfather. The trip offered pupils a memorable and meaningful connection to the human stories behind their classroom learning.

Bringing Religious Studies to Life in Oxford GCSE students enjoyed an inspiring Religious Studies trip to Oxford, beginning at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies where they explored key beliefs, artefacts, and features of worship, guided by Caroline’s personal journey to Islam. The visit continued at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, where curate Naomi shared her own faith journey and students learned about the Eucharist, handled artefacts, and even sampled an unconsecrated host. The trip brought GCSE studies to life, prompting thoughtful questions and deepening understanding of faith and practice.

Life Skills: Invictus Theatre Production As part of our Life Skills curriculum, pupils experienced Invictus, a powerful fifty-minute production presented by the AlterEgo Theatre Company.

Developed in collaboration with young people and a range of professionals, Invictus sensitively and age-appropriately explores the stories of a young girl facing domestic abuse, a young man drawn into County Lines exploitation, and another navigating the effects of neglect. A post-show discussion and follow-up with Life Skills teachers gave pupils the chance to reflect on the stories and engage thoughtfully with the issues raised.

Rotary Youthspeaks This term we took part in the Rotary Youthspeaks Competition. Our team chose the topic, “Is online shopping superior to the high street?” and delivered an impressive performance.

Trinity acted as Chairperson, Amani as Proposer, and Jessica as Opposer, and the team were commended for their wellconstructed ideas and persuasive arguments.

We are delighted to share that Luckley has progressed to the next District Round, and we wish the team every success as they prepare for the next stage of the competition.

SIXTH FORM NEWS

Mrs Julie Rumble, Head of Sixth Form

Upper Sixth Adventure at Disneyland Paris Year 13 students embarked on a magical two-day adventure to Disneyland Paris, travelling via Eurostar from King’s Cross.

Despite the chilly weather, their energy and enthusiasm never waned as they enjoyed thrilling rides, met beloved Disney characters, and explored both parks to the fullest. Teachers joined in the fun too, braving the famous Hyperspace Mountain, though Mrs Rumble wisely chose a comforting hot chocolate afterwards! The trip reached a dazzling finale with the unforgettable fireworks and light display, leaving everyone with memories to treasure.

Senior Politics Trip to Westminster Our Sixth Form Politics students enjoyed an inspiring day in Westminster, visiting the Supreme Court and the Houses of Parliament for behind-the-scenes tours.

They explored historic chambers, learned about key constitutional cases, and took part in a hands-on law-making workshop.

The visit offered a valuable insight into how political decisions are made and how laws take shape. Students also enjoyed seeing famous parliamentary landmarks up close, gaining a real sense of the history woven into every part of Westminster. The trip brought their studies to life and deepened their appreciation of how our democratic institutions work.

Sixth Form Dinner The Sixth Form Dinner brought together both Lower and Upper Sixth students for an evening of celebration in Drake Hall.

Organised by the Senior Prefect Team, the event provided an opportunity to warmly welcome the Lower Sixth into the Sixth Form and to recognise the commitment, leadership and achievements of the Upper Sixth throughout the year.

Students enjoyed the black-tie occasion, beginning with welcome drinks and canapés, followed by a sit-down meal and entertainment. The evening was very well received, reflecting the strong sense of camaraderie and shared purpose within our Sixth Form.

A Level Politics Trip Sixth Form Politics students, joined by some Year 8 pupils, were hosted by the Embassy of Uzbekistan this term. Ambassador Usmanov kindly delivered an engaging presentation on the country and answered a range of insightful questions from the group. The visit concluded with a traditional Uzbek pilaf lunch, giving pupils the chance to experience the country’s culture firsthand. All students represented the School superbly and returned with a much deeper appreciation of Uzbekistan and its rich heritage.

Boarding Round-Up: A Fun-Filled Term of Adventures This term has been an exciting one for our boarders, who have enjoyed a vibrant and varied programme of weekend activities.

Highlights included memorable trips to the London Aquarium, Marwell Zoo, a VR experience, Wokingham Superbowl, paintballing, and a relaxing afternoon of pottery painting. To round off the term, the boarders went to Winchester Christmas Markets to pick up some festive gifts before heading home for the holidays.

We were also delighted to welcome Miss Eels (pictured below) to the boarding team. She has quickly become a firm favourite among the pupils, especially for her much-loved Friday evening film club.

Meanwhile, the newly refurbished games room has been a huge success, providing a lively hub for the boarders to unwind and enjoy their evenings together. It has truly been a fantastic term in boarding, full of shared experiences and special moments.

Boarders’ Christmas Party The boarders celebrated the end of the term with an evening of laughter and friendship. From lively party games and a delicious buffet to Mr Lynch’s legendary Christmas quiz. The ever-popular Magic Show was back for a third year, baffling everyone with some amazing tricks! The night was filled with festive fun and it was a wonderful way for the boarding community to enjoy some time together before departing for the Christmas break.

TAKING THE STAGE - DRAMA AND MUSIC Candlelit Carol Service Our annual Candlelit Carol Service at All Saints Church, Wokingham, was a truly special way to close the term and usher in the festive season. The School Choirs led the congregation in beautiful carols, filling the church with warmth and Christmas spirit.

Traditional Bible readings were interwoven with a selection of heartwarming Christmas poems, thoughtfully shared by pupils from across all year groups. It was a joyous and reflective celebration for the whole school community.

Winter Concert Our Winter Concert was a wonderful evening of music, showcasing the incredible talent across the school. Pupils performed with confidence in a variety of ensembles, including the Senior, Chamber, and Junior Choirs, Acapella group, the Junior Vocal Ensemble, Orchestra, String Ensemble, Swing Band, Junior Rock School, Junior Rock and Pop, as well as a number of outstanding soloists, some for whom it was the first time performing on stage!

GCSE & A Level Music Showcase Luckley’s Music department held another successful annual concert to showcase pupils’ performance coursework in preparation for their final exam recordings. The evening was filled with a wonderful variety of pieces, demonstrating the talent and dedication of our musicians. Well done to everyone for their hard work and commitment..

SPORTS UPDATE U15 Girls’ Hockey

ISA Swimming Gala Success

The Luckley U15B Team competed in the ISA Tournament against a very strong field made up largely of A squads, yet rose to the challenge with real determination. The girls delivered a fantastic performance throughout the day, narrowly losing three hard-fought matches and earning two welldeserved draws. Their teamwork, resilience and positive spirit were clear to see and made the team a credit to the School. They should be very proud of their efforts.

Our swimmers had a fantastic showing at the ISA Swimming Gala this term.

Zuzu (Year 7) claimed 2nd place in the Freestyle and 3rd in the Fly, Daisy (Year 8) took 3rd in the Fly, and Darcy (Year 9/10) triumphed with 1st place in the Backstroke.

Inter Boys Shine at ESAA Cup their Regional Round

Congratulations to all for determination, skill, and team spirit in the pool!

Our Inter Boys team delivered an excellent performance at the ESAA Cup regional round securing 7th place in what was an exceptionally strong and competitive field. The team demonstrated real determination, resilience and teamwork throughout the event. A special highlight came from Jasper, who ran superbly to finish 5th individually. Well done to all the boys for representing Luckley with such commitment and pride.

U15 Girls’ Football

The U13 Girls’ Hockey team enjoyed an excellent day at the U13 ISI Tournament, finishing third in the Trophy competition.

The girls demonstrated impressive teamwork, work rate, and determination, often dominating play against strong opposition. Although converting chances was sometimes the challenge, their consistency and control were clear, with the goalkeeper not required to make a single save in the afternoon. A performance the whole team should be proud of.

The U13 Girls’ Football Team represented the School with great enthusiasm and determination in the ISA Girls Plate competition. Throughout the tournament they demonstrated strong teamwork, energy and resilience, with every player contributing and supporting one another. Although results did not always fall their way, their positive attitude shone through, and they should be proud of their performance.

The U15 Girls Football team delivered a superb performance in the ISA U15 Cup, showing skill, determination, and excellent teamwork. Overcoming tough opposition with disciplined defending and sharp attacking play, they demonstrated resilience and spirit throughout the competition, earning a well-deserved place in the prestigious final.

Inter-House Sports Our Inter-House Sport event saw fantastic teamwork, energy and house spirit across all year groups. Galloway secured victory in the Year 7 and 8 football, while Cornish dominated both the combined hockey fixtures and the Year 9 and 10 rugby. With strong performances throughout the afternoon, Cornish claimed the overall win, with Galloway finishing in second place. Well done to everyone who took part and represented their house with such enthusiasm.

Rugby Under the Lights The annual “Under the Lights” fixture against St Joseph's College (Reading) is always a highlight of the season, marking its exciting conclusion.

The combined Luckley and Sherfield team put in an energetic and determined performance, creating a thrilling match from start to finish.

Although the final score of 46–15 was not in our favour, the squad’s resilience, teamwork and development were clear to see. It was also a special occasion to celebrate our Year 11 and Year 13 players representing the school for the final time. With such progress and commitment shown throughout the season, the team should be very proud of their achievements.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS New Scholars’ Evening We were delighted to host our New Scholars’ Evening this term, an event held to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our new Scholars across Academic, Art, Drama, Performing Arts, Music and Sport. The evening began with refreshments in the Whitty Foyer, where guests also had the opportunity to view a display of artwork created by our Art Scholars. This was followed by a programme in The Whitty Theatre, which included a drama performance by Holly J, an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) presentation from Ilaria R, and a musical performance by Oscar ST and Rei H. Certificates and badges were presented by Heads of Department and the Headmistress, acknowledging each Scholar’s commitment and contribution to school life. We warmly congratulate all our new Scholars and look forward to supporting and celebrating their continued development and success throughout the year. Prefects, Form Captains and Deputies Congratulations to our newly appointed Prefects, Form Captains and Deputy Form Captains for 2025–26.

This talented group will play an important role in supporting school life and representing their peers across the year. Ben and Emma, our Head Students, are looking forward to working closely with the team to help make Luckley an even better place for all pupils.

House Chess Competition For the first time, Luckley House School hosted a pupil-led House Chess Competition.

The tournament was a fantastic success, attracting players and spectators from every year group across the school.

The knockout-style event saw 32 participants compete for House points and the prestigious title of House Chess Champion. After a week of closely fought matches, Vish (Year 11) emerged as the winner, securing victory for Blake House in an exciting and welldeserved finale.

ECO-SCHOOLS Another busy term for the Eco Schools Group, who meet every week to find ways to turn environmental awareness into action across our school.

Climate Committee Sets Year’s Focus Home-grown Pumpkin Muffins Back in May, the Eco-Schools enrichment club planted crown prince pumpkin seeds in our new eco-garden planters. After leaving them to grow over the summer, we returned in September to find five impressive pumpkins ready for cooking!

The pupils, guided by Mrs Gibson, chose to make spiced pumpkin muffins. After Mrs Clinch prepared the purée, they baked 39 delicious muffins after school.

The Climate Committee met to choose the three EcoSchools topics for the coming year: Marine: tacking plastic and litter, particularly on beaches.

Healthy Living: exploring food and wellbeing.

Biodiversity: continuing to develop our eco garden.

The group will meet regularly to work on these themes, under the guidance of Mrs Clutterbuck and Ms Luckin.

Luckley House Students Shine at Mock COP30 Four of our students, Catherine, Shaan, Dylan and Alfie, joined peers from local schools at Holme Grange for a Mock COP30 event. Representing Barbados, Catherine confidently delivered our opening statement on the country’s net-zero targets and sustainability projects. The team took part in lively discussions, questioning India on its carbon commitments and collaborating on global solutions. Dylan later presented their innovative idea: a sea trade alliance promoting electric ships. It was an eye-opening experience that showcased their teamwork, knowledge and enthusiasm for tackling climate challenges, and we are immensely proud of them all.

Medical Sciences Society: Suturing Workshop The inaugural practical event of the Medical Sciences Society; a group founded last year at Luckley House School by Amelia Silverthorne (now studying Medicine at Sunderland) and Mr Boyce to support pupils interested in medical careers and provide hands-on learning, was a resounding success.

Fifteen pupils from Years 10 to 13 attended, representing a wide range of medical and medical-adjacent aspirations. Using medical-grade practice kits, participants performed a simple interrupted stitch, with several progressing to the more advanced simple continuous technique. Pupils developed key clinical skills including fine motor control, precision, spatial awareness, hand–eye coordination, and the ability to follow multi-step procedures, while also boosting confidence and problem-solving abilities.

A special thank you to Mrs Rose, whose healthcare expertise was invaluable in guiding pupils through the suturing process.

The Oddballs Foundation Talk to Year 9-13 Boys This term we welcomed Mia, a representative from The OddBalls Foundation, to speak with our Year 9–13 boys. During a short but impactful assembly, they learned how to check for possible signs of testicular cancer and the importance of early detection.

A big thank you to OddBalls for delivering such an important message — and for bringing along the unmissable OddBalls car, pictured with some of our students!

A Bronze Medal for Jayden!

Boarding pupil Jayden achieved a bronze medal at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad this term and is now receiving mentoring through the UK Mathematics Trust as he prepares for further international competitions, including the UKMT BMO Mathematics Training Camp in Hungary from 27 December 2025 to 4 January 2026.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION Cadets Shine at the Rifles Cadet Cup In October our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) cadets, with Lieutenant Hill, travelled to South Wales to once again compete in the annual Rifles Cadet Cup, this year being run by 1 Rifles who recently returned from a two-year deployment in Cyprus. The cadets received instruction in specific military skills before being tested and competing against Rifles cadet teams from across the country. Through an outstanding show of resilience, determination, and discipline the Luckley team placed second overall, a result that is a testament to their effort and hard-work.

Honouring Remembrance Day Luckley House School came together to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service to our country. The Head and members of the CCF laid poppy wreaths at the front of the School, and a whole-school assembly was led by our Senior Student Team. Reverend Rob shared thoughtful prayers, the Chamber Choir performed a moving musical piece, and the entire school observed a minute of silence in respectful remembrance. This meaningful occasion gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom.

LIBRARY NEWS Bookbuzz Free Books Scheme Once again, we are delighted to offer all Year 7s a complimentary brand new book through our annual investment in the Book Trust's Bookbuzz initiative.

Pupils can select from a wonderful selection of 16 suitable titles, and they have been asking me each week if their books have been delivered! They were very excited to receive their choices ready for some festive reading!

Seating Refurbishment A full refurbishment of all downstairs library seating took place ready for the Autumn term and has given the space a new refresh. Here are two of our newly-appointed Pupil Assistant Librarians Marilia C and Olly C enjoying the comfy new sofas

New Library Assistant We are pleased to welcome Mrs Pinky Rajput as our new Library Assistant, working afternoons. Pinky comes to us having spent 3.5 years within public libraries and is enjoying getting to know our wonderful cohort at Luckley House.

LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES...

Book review by Jack A (Year 7) Once by Morris Gleitzman Once is a tremendous book based on a boy called Felix who is a Jewish child in World War II who ends up leaving his catholic orphanage to find his parents who left him 3 years ago to protect him from the war.

Along the way Felix makes loads of friends and loses some, and the story shows how life was in that time of need and pain in a 10 year old's eyes. The ending is a bit dramatic and scary but I had loads of fun reading and I would recommend.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH This term, we welcomed local primary and prep pupils for two fantastic enrichment events: a Mathemagical Day, where visiting pupils explored the maths behind magic, and our Prep & Primary Football Festival, which brought together local schools for a morning of exciting 6-a-side matches.

We continue to receive updates from Luckley alumni about their achievements, milestones and adventures after leaving school.

Several have been in touch this term, including two from the class of 2025 whom you may recognise. Other alumni have supported current pupils through mentoring and work experience, and one of them shared some fantastic news of her own.

An OBE for Charlotte Pike We are proud to share that Luckley alumna, Charlotte Pike (class of 2006), a senior policy adviser at the Cabinet Office, was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours. Charlotte received the award from Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her dedication to shaping policies that make a real difference to the lives of people across the UK. This honour is testament to Charlotte’s hard work, leadership, and commitment to public service. We are delighted to celebrate her achievement as a member of our alumni community.

Continuing The Luckley Connection Over the summer, Lisa Hutchins (class of 1995) welcomed back Lisa Stewart (class of 2025) for a second week of work experience at Melken Jacobs & The Woolly Wagon. The two hit it off during last year’s placement and stayed in touch, making it easy to arrange another week together.

Lisa Stewart, who is interested in animal behaviour and vet nursing, threw herself into the work and the animals with curiosity and interest. Last year, she quickly picked up hands-on skills like administering injections, tail docking, and caring for Jacob sheep, gaining real insight into life on a working farm.

Now a familiar face, Lisa fits right in with the animals and the humans and is quickly becoming part of the extended farm family.

From Luckley to Christie’s Apprentice

Joe Gilmore, Class of 2025, popped into Luckley in November and shared how much he is enjoying his apprenticeship within Christie’s Archive Department. Joe left Luckley’s Sixth Form with excellent A Level results: A*, A and B in Psychology, Graphic Design and Drama respectively. Last summer, he successfully navigated a highly competitive recruitment process for Christie’s apprenticeship programme. Out of approximately 1,000 applicants, Joe progressed through multiple rounds of interviews and assessments, ultimately securing a place as one of 29 apprentices—an incredible achievement and one that makes us immensely proud. During a recent visit to the Government Art Collection, Joe and his fellow archivists had the rare opportunity to explore its corridors and see some spectacular works of art as a thank you for their research into a particular painting.

LUCKLEY HOUSE FRIENDS Parents working together for our children The autumn term has been bustling with activity for Luckley House Friends as we supported various school events and raised funds for future initiatives.

New Play Equipment This term, LHF made a valued contribution towards the new tree platform and swings in the woodland.

LHF Quiz We were delighted to host another fantastic Quiz Night. It was a wonderful evening of friendly competition and great company. Congratulations to the winning team, led by members of our Luckley Leadership Team!

Year 7 & 8 Disco Years 7 & 8 had an absolute blast at the Disco! From dancing, to amazing balloon creations, and even foam, it was a night full of fun and laughter.
