NICO SERENA KEINE KOMPROMISSE
Ende Januar 2017 in München: Die Sportartikelbranche trifft sich zur Fachmesse «ISPO», dem alljährlichen Stelldichein der Innovation. Mitten in der wichtigsten Modehalle steht Kjus-CEO Nico Serena am Messestand und erklärt einem Fachjournalisten die «Freelite» Jacke: Anders als alle anderen Skijacken ist sie rundherum gestrickt. Sie ist dadurch nach allen Seiten dehnbar, isoliert aber dennoch gegen Kälte, Wind und Wasser. «How did you do this?», erstaunt sich der amerikanische Journalist; in seinem Weltbild kommen Innovationen von Grosskonzernen. Dass ein kleines Unternehmen wie Kjus eine Innovation lanciert, die in den Fachmedien weltweit Schlagzeilen macht, ist in der Tat keine Selbstver-

ständlichkeit. Dinge zu verändern und das Unmögliche zu versuchen, liegt in der DNA von Kjus. Im Jahr 2000 hatten sich der norwegische Olympiasieger Lasse Kjus und Nicos Vater Didi Serena gefragt, weshalb es im Ski-Bereich so wenig echt funktionelle Bekleidung gebe. Zwar gab es damals schon technische Bekleidung – sie kam ästhetisch aber meist etwas bescheiden daher. Der Skistar und der Sportunternehmer beschlossen, das zu ändern: Kjus war als Sportmarke geboren. «Wir haben in der Branche den Ruf, echte Innovationen voranzutreiben», sagt Nico Serena heute. Deshalb kann er mit den Entwicklern der weltweit besten Lieferanten an Neuheiten arbeiten, obwohl er niemals die Abnahmemengen versprechen kann, welche Grosskonzerne einkaufen.
«FREELITE IST DER SKIPULLI DES 21. JAHRHUNDERTS» «Freelite war eine echte Knacknuss. Für das, was wir uns vorgenommen hatten, gab es auf dem Markt nicht einmal die richtigen Maschinen», erinnert Nico sich. «Sie mussten für unsere Ideen zuerst umgebaut und angepasst werden.» Dann brauchte es erfahrene Produzenten, welche die ultrafeine Strickware so mit Membranen verkleben konnten, dass die Jacke trotzdem nach allen Seiten dehnbar bleibt. «Wir machten hunderte von Versuchen, nähten und klebten Prototypen und Vorserien und testeten sie bis zur Zerstörung. Nach vier Jahren waren wir dann endlich dort, wo wir hin wollten.» Das Resultat überzeugt: Die patentierte Freelite Technologie war eines der grossen Gesprächsthemen an der letztjährigen ISPO. «Freelite ist der Skipulli des 21. Jahrhunderts», strahlt Nico Serena. Schnee und Ski prägen das Erbgut von Kjus. Mitgründer und Namensgeber Lasse Kjus ist noch
immer eine treibende Kraft, wenn es darum geht, die beste Sportmode zu machen. «Lasse beansprucht jeden Prototypen, den er zum Testen bekommt, aufs Maximum. Er will einfach sicher sein, dass ein Teil, das seinen Namen trägt, auch einwandfrei funktioniert.»
«TECHNOLOGIE IST NUR EINE SEITE DER INNOVATION.» Skibekleidung ist nach wie vor das Hauptgeschäft von Kjus. Hier investiert das Unternehmen am meisten Zeit und Geld in Neuentwicklungen. Nach der ersten Freizeitlinie 2008 kam 2013 eine Kjus-Golfkollektion dazu. «Auch Golfer wollen in Sachen Qualität und Funktionalität keine Kompromisse machen. Das kommt

uns entgegen.» Golf und Kjus passen zusammen: Nicht weniger als 80 der 100 wichtigsten amerikanischen Proshops arbeiten mittlerweile mit Kjus zusammen. Die Auswahl der richtigen Verkaufspunkte ist für Nico Serena ein zentraler Aspekt. «Nur im Handel kann man unsere Produkte berühren, spüren und erleben.» Aus dem Fachhandel kommen aber auch entscheidende Rückmeldungen: «Weil viele ihrer Kunden Stammkunden sind, können Partner wie Skiservice uns wichtige Hinweise dazu geben, wie unsere Mode bei den Konsumenten im Alltag funktioniert», unterstreicht er. «Technologie ist nur die eine Seite der Innovation: Ohne den Fokus auf die Kunden, würden wir in die falsche Richtung gehen. Noch nie war es so wichtig wie heute, auf die Kunden zu hören.» ◆

NICO SERENA WITHOUT COMPROMISE
Introducing invention upon invention, Kjus has gained a worldwide reputation as an innovator in the sports apparel industry. Living up to their motto «No compromise», Kjus will put the client's needs first, always, without compromise. Munich, end January 2017: the sports industry congregates at the «ISPO» trade show, the annual rendezvous of innovation. Standing at his counter in the centre hall, Kjus's CEO Nico Serena is explaining the «Freelite» jacket to a journalist: Unlike any other ski jacket, this one is fully knitted. That way, it can stretch in all directions, but will still provide insulation against cold, wind and water. «How did you do this?» queries the perplexed American journalist. In his view of the world, innovations stem from multinationals. It is, admittedly, highly unusual that a small company like Kjus launches an innovation that makes headlines in the specialised media around the globe. Changing things and having a go at achieving the impossible is part of Kjus's DNA. Back in 2000, Norwegian Olympic champion Lasse Kjus and Nico's father Didi Serena had been wondering why there was so little functional apparel for skiing that deserved the name. True, technical garments existed – but, in terms of looks, they tended to be below par. The highend ski fashion available at the time

looked good, but its functionality did not satisfy the demanding user. The skiing star and the sports entrepreneur decided to change that: Kjus, the sports brand, was born. «Today, we have a reputation for being true drivers of innovation in our industry,» says Nico Serena. That opens up opportunities to collaborate with the world's best suppliers on new developments, even though Kjus can never sign up for the quantities that large corporations will.
«FREELITE IST THE SKI SWEATER OF THE 21ST CENTURY.» «Freelite proved a tough nut to crack. We couldn’t even find the appropriate machines anywhere for what we were trying to accomplish,» Nico recalls. «They first had to be adapted and converted to our purpose.» Next,
the company needed expert suppliers that could apply a membrane to the ultrafine knitwear in such a manner that the jacket would retain its stretchability. «We made hundreds of trials, we stitched and glued prototypes and pilot productions and tested them to the point of destruction. After four years of hard work, we had finally gotten to where we wanted.» The result is utterly convincing: the patented Freelite technology was one of the most talked about topics at last year's ISPO. «Freelite is the ski sweater of the 21st century,» sums up an enthused Nico Serena. Ski and snow have shaped Kjus's genetic make-up. Co-founder and eponym Lasse Kjus is still a driving force in their endeavour to make the best possible sports apparel. «Lasse will give each prototype that he's given to test a great deal of hard wear. He just wants to make sure that whatever carries his name will work properly.»
Ski apparel remains Kjus's core business. That is where the company invests most of its R&D time and money. In 2013, a golfers collection followed the launch of its first leisurewear collection in 2008. «Golfers, neither, are willing to compromise on quality and functionality. That plays to our advantage.» Golf and Kjus make a good fit: No less than 80 out of the top 100 American pro shops carry the Kjus golfers collection. Choosing the right points of sale is of prime importance to Nico Serena. «The only place where you can touch, feel, and experience our products is in a shop.» Besides, specialised retailers are a valuable source of feedback: «As they have many repeat customers, partners like Skiservice give us essential pointers as to how well the garments perform in everyday use,» he emphasises. «Technology is just one of the two sides of innovation: Without a focus on the customer, we would be heading in the wrong direction. It has never been more important to listen to what the client has to say.» ●

K A S PA R FRAUENSCHUH Sein Familienname steht für den unverkennbaren Stil von Kitzbühel. Frauenschuh ist die Kombination von Tradition und Moderne – in Design, Materialien und erstklassiger Verarbeitung. Skiservice Magazin hat den Gründer und Visionär Kaspar Frauenschuh getroffen. DIE HANDSCHRIFT DES K A S PA R F R AU E N S C H U H Kaspar Frauenschuh, gelernter Gerber und Lederschneider, war gerade 21, als er 1974 den Betrieb seiner Eltern übernahm. Die Gerberei und Ledermanufaktur hatte sich einen Namen gemacht. Hier war in den Sechzigern der «Kitzbühel Style» entstanden; hier bestellten Gäste aus aller Welt ihre Spezialanfertigungen in Leder – vor allem Hirschleder. Kaspar liess sich nicht einschüchtern von der Verantwortung: Er wollte Neues. Von den Modemetropolen der Welt brachte er neue Stile und Weltmarken nach Tirol. Die Familie unterstützte ihn dabei nach Kräften. Bald war der Name Frauenschuh zu einem Synonym für den neuen Stil der Alpen geworden.
AM ANFANG STAND DIE FLEECEJACKE Kaspar wollte noch mehr. Mode sollte nicht nur schick aussehen, sondern gleichzeitig auch einwandfrei funktionieren. In seiner Mode

sollte man sich wohl fühlen und frei bewegen können. 1997 gründete er sein Label «Frauenschuh – Luxury Sportswear from Austria». Sein erstes eigenes Teil war eine Fleecejacke. Eng anliegend, aber dennoch bequem. «Eine Taucherjacke» spotteten die Konservativen. Kaspar liess sich nicht beirren. «Wenn es die Allgemeinheit nicht gut findet, dann wird’s meistens ein Trend», schmunzelt er. Die Fleecejacke wurde sein erstes «Masterpiece». So nennt er die wichtigsten Stücke seiner Marke, die oft mehrere Saisons überdauern. «Wir bleiben bei den Dingen, die wir richtig gut gemacht haben», sagt er zur Entwicklung seiner Kollektionen. «Wir sind nicht Fashion, wir sind modern. Aber bleibend in Wert und Stil.» Ein Team von sechs Leuten entwickelt unter seiner Leitung die Stücke, von denen jedes seine spezielle Handschrift trägt. Der Stil von Frauenschuh ist unverkennbar.
DIE FUNKTION MIT DER ÄSTHETIK VERBINDEN. Traditionelle Materialien wie Loden, Walk und Hirschleder kombiniert er mit technischen Materialien wie dem Schweizer Schöller Stretch und feinstem Nylon aus Japan und schafft so den Komfort und die Leichtigkeit, die seine Linie ausmachen. Gefertigt wird in kleinen Manufakturen in Österreich, Deutschland und Italien. Frauenschuh ist «Handmade in Europe». «Alle unsere Leder stammen aus tiergerechter Haltung, unsere Vertragspartner behandeln ihre Mitarbeitenden anständig und zahlen Löhne, von denen man auch leben kann», unterstreicht Kaspar Frauen-
schuh. Soziale Verantwortung gehört zu seiner Philosophie. «Mittags essen bei uns alle an einem Tisch. Hier diskutieren wir Ideen, Probleme und vor allem Lösungen.»
«EIN FRAUENSCHUH WÄRE TOLL» Von Kitzbühel wegziehen würde er nie. «Ich war schon weissgottwo», sinniert der Modeunternehmer, Visionär und Kitzbüheler. «Hier lebe ich zentral, aber doch mitten in den Bergen.» Nach München oder Salzburg sind es 90 Minuten, in drei Stunden
ist man in Italien oder Wien – und die Lebensqualität liegt gleich vor der Haustür. «Hier kann ich spannende Leute treffen, mich beim Bogenschiessen konzentrieren oder dem Trubel der Hochsaison auf einer Skitour ausweichen.» Auf die Frage, was er gerne einmal machen würde, überlegt er zuerst und lächelt dann: «Ein Frauenschuh wäre toll.» Dabei denkt er wie immer in grossen Dimensionen: «Nicht irgendein Schuh. Den besten alpinen Après-Skischuh.» Noch fehle ihm das Know-how, schränkt er ein. «Aber ich habe jetzt schon im Gefühl, was es dazu braucht». Wir dürfen gespannt sein. ◆

Kaspar Frauenschuh, who trained as tanner and leather tailor, had just turned 21 when he took over the family business in 1974. His parent's tannery and leather goods manufacturing business had gained quite a reputation: back in the 1960's, they had invented the famous «Kitzbühel style». Guests from around the world went to Frauenschuh for their bespoke, tailor-made leather goods – primarily deerskin. Kaspar did not shy away from the responsibility: he wanted to move on. From the world's fashion metropolises, he brought new designs and new global labels to Tyrol. His family was very supportive. Soon, the Frauenschuh label had become synonymous with the new Alpine style.
FIRST CAME THE FLEECE JACKET Kaspar wanted to go even further. Beyond being chic, fashion should also be functional without a fault. Wearing one of his designs, one should feel at ease and be able to move freely. In 1997, he founded his label «Frauenschuh – Luxury Sportswear from Austria». He started his collection with a fleece jacket. Close-fitting, yet comfortable. «A scuba diving jacket,»

mocked the conservatives. Kaspar didn't let himself be put off. «If the general public doesn't like it, it usually turns into a trend,» he comments with a grin. The fleece jacket became his first ‹masterpiece› – a term he applies to those outstanding items carrying his label that will endure through several collections. «We stick to the things that we did really well,» he explains the evolution of his collections. «We don't do fashion; we're modern, yet provide lasting value and style.» A team of six develops the collection under his guidance, each piece bearing his signature. The Frauenschuh style is unmistakable.
COMBINING FUNCTIONALITY AND AESTHETICS. To create the lightness and comfort that make out his collections, he combines traditional materials such as loden, boiled wool or deerskin with technical materials such as stretch fabrics from Swiss maker Schöller and ultrathin Japanese nylon. Every item is handsewn in small workshops in Austria, Germany and Italy. Frauenschuh is «handmade in Europe». «All our leathers stem from animal-friendly husbandry, our contractual partners treat their employees well and pay salaries that they can live on,» Kaspar Frauenschuh emphasises. Social responsibility is part of his philosophy. «Everyone has lunch together at one big table. That's where we discuss ideas, problems, and, above all, solutions.»
«A LADIES SHOE WOULD BE GREAT.» He would never move away from Kitzbühel. «I have been all over the place,» reflects the fashion tycoon, visionary and Kitzbühel native.
«Here, I live in a place that's central yet in the midst of the mountains.» It takes 90 minutes to go to Munich or Salzburg, Vienna and Italy are just three hours away – and the quality of life is right at your doorstep. «Here, I can meet fascinating people, take some time out to focus while doing archery, or go ski touring to escape the hurly-burly of the high season.»

He ponders a while, then grins when asked what he would still like to do one day: «A Frauenschuh (German for ladies shoe) would be great.» As always, he is thinking big: «Mind you, not just any shoe. The best alpine après-ski shoe.» He still lacks the know-how, he concedes. «But I think I already know what it would have to be.» So, watch this space. ●

BODE MILLER « D U WÄC H S T N I C H T AN DEINEN SIEGEN»
«Ich habe gespürt, dass die Leute da gleich ticken wie ich», sagt Bode Miller über das Engadin. «Wir sind alle aus demselben Holz geschnitzt; wir teilen die Freude am Skifahren und tun alles, es unseren Gästen und unseren Kindern weiterzugeben.» In St. Moritz gewann Bode seine ersten grossen Titel: «Ich fuhr gegen Maier, Eberharter, Walchhofer, Kjus, Aamodt. Sie waren alle besser als ich. Ich war der Neue und ich wusste, dass ich kompromisslos alles geben musste, wenn ich gewinnen wollte.» Der Sport habe sich seither verändert, es fehlten die Ausnahmeathleten: «Leute wie Hermann Maier oder Alberto Tomba konnte man nur

schlagen, wenn man das Letzte aus seinem Körper und seinem Material herausholte», sinniert Miller. «Sie hoben den ganzen Sport auf ein höheres Niveau.»
«DIE HANDWERK LICHE QUALITÄT ENTSCHEIDET.» Seit 2015 ist Bode keine Rennen mehr gefahren. Als Familienvater hat er andere Prioritäten. «Das Wichtigste für mich ist, für die vier Kinder da zu sein. Sie fahren alle Ski, aber ich dränge sie nicht dazu. Sie sollen den Sport entdecken und Freude daran entwickeln.» Sport ist eine Lebensschule, die Bode geprägt hat: «Du wächst nicht an Deinen Siegen, sondern an den Niederlagen; rappelst Dich immer wieder auf, fasst einen neuen Plan und setzt ihn um. Das kann Dir niemand beibringen; das musst Du selbst erleben und daraus lernen.»
Zum Ende seiner Sportkarriere hat sich der Olympiasieger zwei kleinen Herstellern zugewandt, die er als Miteigentümer, Innovationsverantwortlicher und Botschafter prägt: Aztech Mountain und Bomber Skis. «Hier kann ich aktiv etwas verändern und mit dafür sorgen, dass nur die besten Produkte in die Läden kommen», umschreibt er seine Rolle. Aztech Mountain hat sich kein geringeres Ziel gesetzt, als die beste Skibekleidung der Welt zu machen. «Skifahren ist Bewegung: Deine Bekleidung darf Dich auf keinen Fall einschränken. Sie sollte wasserdicht sein und Dich im Winter warm halten, aber doch nicht zu warm.» Es gebe viele Textilmarken, die sich als Lifestyle-Produkte anpriesen, sagt Bode. «Aber die meisten sind es einfach nicht. Zu Deinem Lebensstil gehört ein Teil erst, wenn Du es in wirklich jeder Situation gerne trägst. Mit unseren Jacken gehst Du abends auch mal aus – einfach weil Du Dich darin so wohl fühlst.»

«Heute will jeder nur noch billig und billiger produzieren – und am Ende produzieren alle nur noch Schrott. Die handwerkliche Qualität entscheidet darüber, ob unsere Kunden Spass mit unseren Produkten haben. Bomber und Aztech produzieren deshalb in Italien. Das hat seinen Preis, aber die Qualität stimmt.»
«WIR MÜSSEN BEI DEN KINDERN ANFANGEN.» Skifahren hat Bode geprägt – und Bode hat das Skifahren geprägt. Der Sport liegt ihm am Herzen, das spürt man in jedem seiner Sätze. «Wenn wir den Sport nachhaltig fördern wollen, müssen wir bei den Kindern anfangen», ist der Champion überzeugt. «Kleinere Kinder sollten für die Tickets nichts bezahlen müssen. Wenn sie als Kinder die Freude dieses Sports erleben, wird Skifahren immer ein Teil ihres Lebens sein.» ◆

No one leaned into the turn as he did: His unique style and his unwavering willingness to take risks made him a world champion and an Olympic gold medallist. In his interview with the Skiservice Magazine, he speaks of how he sees the future of the sport of ski. «I immediately felt we were on the same wavelength,» says Bode Miller speaking of the people of the Engadin. «We're two of a kind; both the locals and I love skiing, and we'll do our best to pass this joy on to our guests and our kids.» It was in St. Moritz that Bode won his first major titles: «I was racing Maier, Eberharter, Walchhofer, Kjus, Aamodt. All of them were better than I was. I was the rookie, and I knew that I had to pull out all the stops – uncompromisingly – if I wanted to win.» The sport, since, has changed; exceptional athletes are a thing of the past: «In the old days, you only had a chance to beat someone like Hermann Maier and Alberto Tomba if you took your body and your equipment to the limits,» muses Miller. «These guys lifted the entire sport to a new level.»
«THE QUALITY OF THE WORKMANSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.» Bode hasn't entered a race since 2015. Being a father, he has other priorities. «The most important thing in my life is to be there for my children. They all ski, but I don't push them to do so. I want them to discover the sport on their own and to find pleasure in it.» Sports, for Bode, has been a formative school of life: «Winning doesn't make you advance, but losing does. After a defeat, you pull yourself up once again, you make a new plan, and you implement it. No

one can teach you this; you have to live and learn it on your own.» Towards the end of his sports career, the Olympic champion teamed up with two small sports goods manufacturers, Aztech Mountain and Bomber Skis. Bode acts as co-owner, head of innovations, and brand ambassador. «Here, I can drive change and make sure only the best products make it into the shops,» is how he describes his role. For Aztech Mountain, the goal is no less than to make the best skiwear in the world. «Skiing is moving: your clothing should at no cost hinder you in your movements. It should be waterproof and keep you warm in winter, but not too warm.» Many apparel brands claim to make a lifestyle product, says Bode. «But most of them don't live up to their claim. A garment will only become part of your lifestyle when you would wear it in any situation. You would wear one of our jackets to go out in the evening – that's how comfy it feels.» «Nowadays, the sole focus is on lowering the cost of production, becoming ever cheaper – and, in the end, everyone just ends up producing garbage. The quality of manufacturing, however, will make or break whether our clients enjoy our products. That is why Bomber and Aztech manufacture in Italy. That comes at a price, but the quality is first-rate.»
«WE MUST BEGIN WITH THE KIDS.» Skiing has left its mark on Bode – and Bode left his mark on skiing. Skiing is dear to his heart, and it is evident in every word he utters. «If we want the sport to thrive in the long run, we have to start with the kids,» the champion says with conviction. «Small children shouldn't have to pay for their tickets. If they come to know the enjoyment of the sport at a young age, skiing will always be a part of their lives.» ●

FINDE DEINE SPUR Es ist noch stockdunkel, als die drei Freunde ihr Material aus den Autos laden. Semira, Claudio und Nik haben sich mit Bergführer Marcel auf eine Frühlingstour im Val Forno bei Maloja verabredet.
«Ohne Bergführer sollte man in solchem Gelände keine Tour machen», sagt Claudio, der selbst in Maloja aufgewachsen ist. «Auch die Ausrüstung muss stimmen»,
ergänzt Semira und schultert einen ABS-Rucksack mit Lawinen-Airbag. Darin sind Lawinensonde, Schaufel, trockene Kleider, Zwischenverpflegung und Getränke. «Mir ist vor allem das Essen wichtig», lacht sie und geht los. Der Anmarsch durch das kalte, stille Seitental zieht sich hin. Die Lichtkegel der vier Stirnlampen tanzen auf den schwarzen Hängen umher. Marcel, der routinierte Bergführer, legt die Spur. «Der Boom des Freeriding freut mich, er hat aber auch seine Nachteile. Manchmal tauchen Leute, die sich keine Gedanken über Risiken ma-
chen, in Hängen auf, wo sie sich selber und auch andere in grosse Gefahr bringen.» Der Monte del Forno leuchtet in der Sonne, als die Vierergruppe in seinem Schatten Richtung Fornohütte aufsteigt. Langsam weicht die Kälte der Nacht der Frühlingsluft; bald einmal werden Reissverschlüsse geöffnet und Jacken ausgezogen. «Moderne Freeride-Bekleidung verwendet technische Materialien, behindert nicht die Bewegung, hat aber trotzdem ansprechende Schnitte», sagt Semira in einer Pause. Sie weiss wovon sie spricht. Seit 10 Jahren ist sie bei Skiservice.
«DER FRÜHE VOGEL FÄHRT DEN FIRN.» «Und wie man an Euch beiden sieht, sehen diese Kleider auch gut aus», scherzt Nik. Der Mentaltrainer ist ein routinierter Freerider und Tourengänger. «Durch meinen Beruf kann ich mir die Zeit frei einteilen. So steigt die Chance, den besten Tag des Winters zu erwischen.» Auch Claudio kann sich

die Zeit gut einteilen. Im Winter arbeitet er in der Garage seines Onkels in Maloja. «Freeride Paradise», lächelt er vielsagend. Oben an der Hütte angekommen warten die vier noch ein Weilchen, dass die Morgensonne den Firnhang weiter antauen kann. «Der frühe Vogel fährt den Firn», schmunzelt Semira. «Wer morgens nicht aus dem Bett kommt, erlebt so etwas nie.» «Du musst den Firn genau im richtigen Moment erwischen. Bist Du zu früh, ist der Hang rau wie Schmirgelpapier, bist Du zu spät, bricht die Unterlage ein und Du ruinierst alles», ergänzt Claudio, blickt in die Runde und steigt in die Bindung.
EINE KATHEDRALE AUS LICHT Der Moment ist gekommen; plötzlich sind alle unterwegs: Wie scharfe Klingen führen sie ihre Skis über die fragile Unterlage. Jeder findet seine ganz eigene Spur. Manche Turns sind gecarvt und kaum hörbar. «Der Ski muss schon etwas aushalten. Ist er zu leicht, verdreht

er sich im Turn zu stark und dann hält er bei hohen Tempi oder auf harter Unterlage zu wenig», antwortet Semira auf die Frage, ob sie lieber superleichte oder eher robuste Skis fährt. «Diese Tour ist ein guter Test», sagt Nik. «Von Powder bis Firn haben wir heute alles dabei.» Nach einem weiteren kurzen Aufstieg kommen sie zum Fuss des Fornogletschers. Hier haben warme und kalte Luftströme eine imposante Gletscherhöhle geformt. In dieser Kathedrale aus Licht stehen alle plötzlich ganz still beieinander. Andächtig betrachten sie den Himmel aus Jahrtausende altem Eis. «Nicht nachmachen», lächelt der Bergführer Marcel, der die Höhle vor dem Betreten zuerst begutachtet hatte. «Die Decke scheint zu schweben, aber sie ist viele hundert Tonnen schwer.» Auch die letzte Abfahrt ist noch einmal ein Genuss. Der Firn ist nun sehr weich, unter den Skier tönt er fast wie die kleinsten Wellen an einem Meeresstrand. Sie waren etwas länger unterwegs als geplant. Eigentlich hätten alle noch viel zu tun - aber der Tag ist einfach zu schön dazu. ◆◆

FIND YOUR LINE The night is still pitch-black as the three friends unload their gear from the cars. Semira, Claudio, and Nik are meeting mountain guide Marcel to go on a spring ski tour into the Val Forno near Maloja.
«You shouldn't venture into this terrain without a guide,» cautions Claudio, who grew up in Maloja. «You need to have the right gear too,» adds Semira as she shoulders her ABS backpack with inbuilt avalanche airbag. Semira also carries a shovel and a probe, spare clothes, a snack and drinks in her backpack. «The food is the most important thing for me,» she laughs and sets off. The first stretch through the cold and quiet side valley seems to take forever. The light from the four headlamps is bouncing off the black mountainsides as they follow the track that Marcel, an experienced mountain guide, is making, leading the way. «I am thrilled to see that so many people are taking up off-piste skiing, but the boom has its downside too. Sometimes, people that don't give a thought to the risks involved end up on a slope where they put themselves, and others, in danger. » The Monte del Forno glows in the sunlight as the group climbs up to the Forno cabin in the mountain's shade. The coldness of the night slowly gives way to the spring air; zippers are soon undone and jackets disposed of. «Today's freeriding apparel makes use of technical tex-
tiles, won't restrain your movement, and still have a pleasing design,» Semira explains in a break. She knows what she is talking about. She has been with Skiservice for ten years.
«THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE FIRN.» «And, as you can see on those two, these garments also look good,» says Nik jokingly. The mental coach is an accomplished off-piste and backcountry skier. «My job allows me to manage my schedule easily. That increases the chances of catching the perfect day of the winter.» Claudio, too, is master of his time. In the winters, he works at his uncle's garage in Maloja. «Freeride paradise,» he says, smiling meaningfully. Once they arrive at the mountain cabin, the four wait a little while for the morning sun to thaw the firn a bit more. «The early bird catches the firn,» Semira twinkles. «Those who can't get out of bed early will never live to see this.» «You need to catch the firn snow at just the right moment. If you go in too early, the slope will be as rough as sand-

paper; if you go in too late, you'll crack through the surface and ruin everything,» Claudio adds, nods to his buddies and steps into his bindings.
A CATHEDRAL MADE OUT OF LIGHT The moment has come; right on cue, everyone sets off. They wield their skis over the fragile surface as if they were sharp blades. Each

skier finds his line. Some turns are carved and barely audible. «The skis need to be able to withstand some force. If they are too light, they will twist too much in the turns and not be stable enough at high speeds or on a hard surface,» Semira replies to the question as to whether she prefers to ski super light or rather sturdy skis. «This tour is a good test,» Nik says. «Today, we've had everything from firn to powder.» After another ascent, they arrive at the foot of the Forno glacier. An impressive cave, formed into the ice by warm and cold air currents, opens up in front of them. All of a sudden, as they stand next to each other in this cathedral of light, they turn silent. Enrapt, they contemplate the dome made out of ice that is thousands of years old.«Don't go in on your own,» says Marcel, the guide, who had inspected the cave before entering. «The ceiling may seem to hang in the air, but it weighs thousands of tons.» The last line downhill is, once more, sheer bliss. The firn has turned very soft, the snow being pushed away by the skis makes a sound like tiny waves rippling onto a sandy beach. The tour took a bit longer than planned, and will make their already busy day even busier – but never mind, the day is just too beautiful to waste. ●

AUF IN DEN SÜDEN Mit ihren Flow- und Singletrails gehört die Corviglia ob St. Moritz seit Jahren zu den beliebtesten Mountainbike-Bergen der Alpen. Auf der anderen Talseite lockt der Berninapass mit einem Trail bis (fast) ans Mittelmeer. Die Tour von Pontresina Richtung Poschiavo beginnt mit dem Aufstieg auf den Berninapass. Die meisten fahren auf der rechten Talseite via Morteratsch, als Variante bietet sich aber auch ein Trail an, der am Dorfausgang hinter dem Hotel Palü in den Wald verschwindet. Vorbei an der Talstation Diavolezza geht es hinauf an den Lago Bianco. Vom Berninapass auf 2’300 Metern gibt es dann verschiedene Wege in den Süden: Auf der linken Talseite oberhalb der Passstrasse via La Rösa oder rechts entlang der Bahnstrecke über Alp Grüm. Auf verschlungenen Wegen und über unzählige Kurven geht es bis nach Poschiavo auf nur noch 1’000 Metern Meereshöhe. Hier wähnt man sich fast am Mittelmeer; man spricht Italienisch, die Restaurants servieren lokale Spezialitäten und traumhaften italienischen Kaffee. Zur Planung der Tour fragen Sie am besten einen unserer Bike-Spezialisten; gewisse Passagen sind anspruchsvoll. Die roten Züge der Rhätischen Bahn sind die ideale Ergänzung für das Bike-Paradies am Berninapass: mit ihren zahlreichen Haltestellen lassen sie sich bestens als Transporthelfer einspannen. ◆

HEADING SOUTH Thanks to its flow trails and single track trails, Corviglia above St. Moritz has become one of the favourite mountain biking destinations in the Alps. On the other side of the valley, the Bernina Pass beckons with a trail that leads right into a Mediterranean lifestyle. The tour from Pontresina towards Poschiavo begins with a climb to the Bernina Pass. Most bikers will take the route along the right side of the valley via Morteratsch; but, there is also a less wellknown trail that disappears into the forest behind the Hotel Palü just outside of Pontresina. On your way up to the Lago Bianco, you will pass the bottom station of the Diavolezza cable car. Once you have reached the Bernina Pass at an altitude of 2,300 meters, you have a choice of several routes heading south: On the left side of the valley via La Rösa, staying above the paved road, or on the right, following the train tracks via Alp Grüm. Along windy paths and after countless curves, you will arrive in Poschiavo that lies at an altitude of merely 1,000 metres. You will feel transposed to the Mediterranean; you'll hear Italian spoken, restaurants serve mouthwatering local specialities and heavenly Italian coffee. When planning your tour, it's best to ask one of our biking experts for advice: some sections of the route are tricky. The red cars of the Rhaetian Railways complement the Bernina biker's paradise beautifully: with their many stops, you can conveniently enlist them as transportation aides. ●

L O YA L I TÄT – Ü B E R JAHRZEHNTE Mit Marianne Fümm und Toni Mayer haben zwei langjährige Stützen des Skiservice-Teams kürzlich das Pensionsalter erreicht und werden etwas kürzer treten. Ein guter Zeitpunkt, danke zu sagen! Skiservice war gerade zwei Jahre alt, als Toni 1977 zum Team stiess und die erste Filiale im damaligen Hotel Conrad in Silvaplana eröffnete. «Ob Ski, Langlauf oder Windsurfen: Toni kann erklären und begeistern. Und für den Service an unseren Gästen ist ihm nie ein Weg zu weit», lobt Skiservice-Gründer Curdin Conrad. «Toni hat unsere Philosophie vom ersten Tag an ge-
lebt. Und für viele im Team war er auch eine Art Beichtvater». Auch Marianne hat im Team eine spezielle Stellung. 1996 kam sie als Sekretärin zu Skiservice und war schon bald die rechte Hand des Chefs. Sie führte die Buchhaltung, betreute das Personalwesen und hatte für die Sorgen der Mitarbeitenden immer ein offenes Ohr. Marianne und Toni stehen beispielhaft für die Geschichte und den Erfolg von Skiservice. Wir danken ihnen herzlich für ihre Treue und ihren grossen Einsatz über viele Jahre. Sie werden immer ein Teil der Skiservice Familie bleiben.
U N FA I L I N G L O YA L T Y Marianne Fümm and Toni Mayer, two longtime team members and linchpins of Skiservice, have recently reached retirement age and will henceforward be taking it a bit easier. The perfect opportunity to say thank you! Skiservice had just turned two when Toni joined the team in 1977 to open Skiservice's second shop in what was then the Hotel Conrad in Silvaplana. «Toni is very good at explaining and his enthusiasm – be it about skiing, cross-country skiing, or windsurfing – is catching. What's more, he will never shy away from any effort to be of service to our guests,» praises Skiservice founder Curdin Conrad. «Toni was part of
the fabric of our company from day one. And, to many in the team, he was also a confidant.» Marianne, too, takes a special place in the team. She joined Skiservice in 1996 as a secretary and soon became the boss's right-hand woman. She did the bookkeeping, managed human resources, and was always prepared to lend a sympathetic ear to the concerns of the employees. Marianne and Toni have hugely shaped the history and success of Skiservice. We thank them warmly for their loyalty and their never-wavering commitment over so many years. They will always be a part of the Skiservice family.
