ocated just a few miles from Hot Springs Village, Lake Hamilton is a water lover’s destination. This lake was formed in 1932 with the construction of the Carpenter Dam on the Ouachita River. Boasting almost 200 miles of shoreline, Lake Hamilton covers a whopping 7,200 acres and is 18 miles in length. It is dotted with small coves and inlets and is almost entirely inhabited by homes, restaurants and resorts. Water-skiing, pleasure boating and fishing are popular Hot Springs attractions on Lake Hamilton with rentals of watercraft, jet-skis and sport accessories readily available. The Belle of Hot Springs is a 400-passenger riverboat that offers sightseeing, lunch, dinner and dance cruises on the lake. Hill Wheatley Park, located on the shore, has a popular swim area with a man-made sandy beach, picnic facilities and restrooms.

Anglers enjoy fishing Lake Hamilton, where the varying water temperatures support habitats for a variety of fish. Cast in a line and you might reel in striped, spotted, white and small mouth bass, black and white crappie, flathead, blue, channel and bullhead catfish and chain pickerel. Arkansas’ Game & Fish Commission also stocks the lake with rainbow trout. This year, you could also win big in the Hot Springs Fishing Challenge on Lake Hamilton, which includes a total of $86,000 in prizes. Hike, picnic and enjoy wildlife of all kinds on one of three islands on Lake Hamilton: Rabbit Island, Little Goat Island, and Big Goat Island or Electric Island.
