The City of London is a distinct district within the capital. A series of statues of dragons (the symbol of the City) can be seen on the streets, marking out its boundaries. From Fleet Street in the west to Aldgate in the east, to Holborn and Barbican at its northern boundary and with the Thames marking its southern edge, the City is also known as the Square Mile. Its maze of alleyways and key thoroughfares ensure it’s anything but a simple square, while the combination of centuries old architecture and cutting edge modern design create a unique and fascinating environment to work and live in. The Romans founded Londinium here and it has been the focus for British commerce for over a thousand years. Rich in heritage, it is London’s historic heart, yet its diverse cultural offering enables the City to be a nurturing home for contemporary art and performance whilst remaining at the forefront of business innovation.

Sponsor’s Welcome The City of London might cover a relatively small area but it’s easy to get from station to office to sushi bar to office and home again without really getting the most out of what’s around you. Maximise your coffee break with a few minutes’ contemplation in a quiet City garden; gaze on artistic genius at a free art gallery in your lunch hour or catch up with colleagues in a different bar to the ‘usual’ at the end of a productive day. Grange Hotels has two key City locations – by St Paul’s and near the Tower of London (with a third hotel just east of the City). Our restaurants, bars, gym and spa facilities are open daily. In this guide we only have space for a few highlights across the City, but we hope they lead you to new, favourite places to eat, shop and relax throughout your working week. Plus, tempt you back to enjoy and share this unique square and its treasures along the way. Keep this guide handy for inspiration and in its pages, look for special recommendations from our project partners. The guide is also available in app form – The City of London Guide. Enjoy, Grange Hotels 3
