When you put the planet first, you don’t just create products that bring joy and durability. The planet-first approach involves using only the safest and best components to manufacture world-class products that pass the most rigorous international quality standards. Which is why we're the first plywood manufacturer in India to use certified E1 grade low-emission resin as per global standards. This ensures our products are the safest for you and the planet.

insight about their flair for design and their outlook towards life.

DM: What determined your passion for design? Pratap Jadhav: Uniqueness found in any form of creation is something that fascinates me. The very feeling of creating something distinct is exciting. I strongly believe that a design should be created in a manner that it should influence the lifestyle of the end user.

DM: What is a good design according to you, is it an art or science? PJ: It is both; if the designer fails to integrate it, the design can eventu-

A cozy vacation The Anita Shinde Residence was an interesting project for Jadhav and his team. The client bought a dry shell space and wanted a comfortable house, which could be easily maintained by the maids, as the client was going to stay there only for a few months in a year and shall travel to Canada, her hometown. Jadhav and his team were privileged to have worked for several NRI clients in the past and this experience taught them to offer the best quality work and following the timelines. Elabo-

At the end of the day the client and her family, who travels once in a while are happy to have an Indian home with international finishing quality.”

Safety Den ( Pai Residence ) The client owned bungalow with three floors and decided on the fact that every floor will be designed by a different designer. One floor was planned for the parents and the other two for two brothers. The younger brother’s floor was assigned to these designers and the client being a doctor wanted wood, all over for the safety of his little one. “We could stand as equals with the other designers ,” exclaims the designer duo.

Embrace the technology for the ease of work and for a healthy lifestyle Utilitarian kitchens are no longer the status quo of the kitchen industry. It’s been the voice of one’s lifestyle – prejudice of their character, beliefs and culture. Yet there is a huge misconception that the design attributes uplift one’s social status; it upholds! Kitchen designs have multifarious planning dimensions and rest a greater challenge at addressing overlapping of design iteration and meeting the needs of every individual of a family. And thus, they involve meticulous study on the user pattern to develop an enriched spatial experience.

Evolution of kitchen design It’s no surprise that open planned kitchens are in vogue and this isn’t a discovery. Way back in 1900’s the design was highly appreciated and the advancement in technology set par its limitations. Although, the advent of such ideas invaded India quite recently! With a high rate of import/export trades and outbound travellers, the concept of a kitchen has evolved inspiring Western markets. Indians are opting for modular kitchens over the traditional ones for their inclination towards their minimalistic design, economic sensibility, low maintenance and feasibility. “Over JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016 • Design Matrix 41

Moreover, the spatial planning of kitchens has encroached into living and dining area, blurring the boundaries and unifying the spaces. “Gone are the days when kitchens were mere workshops hidden behind the affluence of living rooms. Today, the kitchen forms an integral part of home interior planning and absorbs a huge chunk of overall home improvement budget,” he explicates the shifting paradigm. The elaborate cooking pattern has evolved as an art and its functional purpose – preparation, cooking and washing – has encapsulated to an interactive space. The limelight on island kitchen, extended into a breakfast table or a workstation, has enhanced family bonding. One can witness work, play and cook converg-

The kitchen has become a prime focus in an Apartment or an Interior project. ing at one place – kitchen! The kitchen design is envisaged as “a hub for family meals to have it together or guests being entertained through an extensive course of wining and dining,” he adds. Besides the ease of usage and impeccable details in the designing of modular kitchens, they are the popular choice for their plethora of offerings in colours, textures, materials, finishes and technology. They address the user’s comfort and convenience, personifies their socio-economic pride and enriches family tuning to the highest degree. “Trendy materials like tile, stone, aluminium, cement resin, matt glass, matt lacquered and open pore wood with earthy colours are catching up one’s attention,” remarks Archhana Smart, Director, Prahheelika Design Studios (Modulnova), Mumbai.

Factors driving an efficient kitchen design It’s wise to follow, ‘The Work Triangle’ thumb rule for things to fall in place automatically. The spatial planning of kitchen involves a triangular design module between preparation/ cooking section, storage section and cleaning/washing section to ensure smooth work within minimal movements. “A good kitchen designer aims for applying ergonomics to a kitchen. ‘The Work Triangle’ is based on the height of the end consumer, whether they are tall or short – if one can’t comfortably reach upper cabinets, then frequently used items can’t be stored there. If one can’t bend to reach lower cabinets, extensive pullouts may be a good option in the kitchen. Besides, eyesight is also a factor in planning illumination,” exclaims Swati Gupta, Head-Design, Stitchwood.com. The science of ergonomics plays a paramount role especially in homes where space constraints and user

Our USP is that we customise our designs according to the client needs and their price points. L shaped and U shaped designs are popular with apartment owners whereas for big houses, owners prefer island units. The need to be able to mass produce inexpensively in large quantities has resulted in the standardisation of many kitchen components to a hypothetical “average,” size. Counter tops are, for example, resolutely 32”- 34” from the floor. This is a good average height that fits many users, but unfortunately, not for all users. The upper cabinets are installed 18”-24” above the countertop. So we customize even in dimensions to be able to meet above needs. Swati Gupta, Head-Design, Stitchwood.com

demands are equally high. Wolf says, “The Urban consumer is actively looking for the most functional kitchen within the available space without compromising on design and aesthetics. The user wants more life per meter square from their kitchen. This involves designing every nook and corner of the kitchen to look good and contribute functionally to reduce the number of hours spent in the kitchen.” In agreement with the changing adaptability of the user,

is evident in most modular kitchen designs, appliances, gadgets and hardwares designed. Invariable of the users, they are proven for its efficiency and durability. “There are hardwares that control the operation of drawers and shutters automatically by mere touch sensation,” points Manish Jain, Director, Bleu Concepts, New Delhi. Current trends Trends are subjected to constant change in tune with the developments of allied fields of the kitchen market. Trends in India majorly follow European market as most of the changes are primarily witnessed by the West. Tall storage cabinets, multiple sets of drawers over shutters, concealed appliances and handle-less shutters/drawers are the leading trends in the market. In addition, “With bigger drawer fronts in demand, there is an increasing needs to create drawers systems with more weight carrying capacity and stability,” states Goel. Observing the trajectory of the kitchen market, Wolf points, “In the design of kitchens today, the use of handles and knobs is becoming less popular and profiled handles or flush handles are the prominent features. You can also use break-through innovations like electrical opening systems that allow cabinet

The pull outs and slide on of the cabinets, embedded electrical plugs in the island workstation engages the user for an efficient/effective work – a smart kitchen! Of late, people are opened to experiment with new dimensions of kitchen designs with unique materials, finishes and textures. Among which, the industrial outlook is highly gaining the attraction. Nevertheless, “glossy finishes are popular in the mid segment whereas matt finishes are in the high-end segment,” emphasises Rohin Ramchandani, Managing Director, Grandeur, Mumbai.

With minimalistic design taking over the choice of materials and textures, there is a wide outburst on the colour palette. In contrast to the sleek furniture with subtle colours and uncluttered finishes, bold and eclectic colours are being predominantly opted over sober hues for bare walls. Further highlighting the trends in kitchen interiors, Sanjeev Dayal, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Carysil, New Delhi; remarks, “We see most kitchens have minimal wall space. So it’s a good place to splash some bold colour and make a statement without overpowering the room.”

Is Kitchen segment dominated by the unorganised sector? “The modular kitchen business is a fragmented market with an estimated size of about 6000 crores. There are a plethora of small manufacturers making some components such as shelves, baskets or panels and a few players providing modular kitchens,”

Carysil, New Delhi (2)

states Dayal. The design dynamism has witnessed tremendous changes over the decades and holds a vast array of manufacturers and suppliers under its wings. However, Ramchandani mentions, “The educated customers are opting for European branded kitchens especially due to the decreasing gap between the costs of a domestically manufactured kitchen and a European modular kitchen.” It is quite debatable to take a stance on one over the other. Nevertheless, with the technological development and a holistic design approach, and with an acceptance of international concepts, one might look at the unorganised sectors diluting into thin air. “Today, the competition in the kitchen market is neck-toneck and the dependency on the unorganised market is gradually decreasing,” comments Wolf.

Challenges of designing Modular Kitchens A wide array of a material palette and technological equipment has raised the bar of modular kitchen designs. And customisation is the key to tackle/satisfy architects, designers or end-users unquenching demands. Politically, there are two, relatively different, categories to address – the influencers(architects/designers) and the customers (end users). Marginally, the definition of the modular kitchen may vary. But it’s a collaborative exercise. Although the priority of architects/designers is for finishes, materials and the overall outlook of the product, they also look for durability, maximum utility space and the budget constraints of their clients. Matchbox spaces have significantly challenged the kitchen market dominating for portable/ multifunctional furniture with sleek

The north wall was scooped and fitted with glass to create a transparency with the courtyard which effectively compliments the brilliant elegance in this neat kitchen. This kitchen intelligently utilizes every available space to provide adequate work space. A dining for six was also accommodated within the available space. White being a popular choice for its clean look for kitchens has been extensively used in the deco finish of abundant ‘out- of sight’ storage cabinets. The window on the south overlooking the context was provided for cross ventilation with a display of bonsai plants on the niche. The design of the false ceiling was kept simple to ensure a uniform distribution of artificial light. The choice of beige colored marble for flooring added onto the class.

Large cabinets with frosted glass and deco finish panels created an architectural feature and made use of all available space. The spaciously designed kitchen also accommodates a breakfast table in the center in accordance to the black and white theme. Glass was used as paneling above the kitchen platform and the cabinets were given a deco finish with a play of the rhythm in the handles. Ceiling was experimented with alternating black and white wooden rafters adopting a concept of a piano and the illumination was done on the periphery to eliminate unwanted shadows. It feels like we’ve known each other for a lifetime though. We worked very closely together for six years and during that time shared a very good understanding and approach to the businesses.” Even after they went their separate ways in 2010, Poonam later joined Shilpa in her consulting practice in 2012. Goa clearly did not need another Goan food place or even Mediterranean for that matter. Our differentiator

would just have to be a regional cuisine, which lends itself to pork, fish and prawns, food that Goa thrives on and Bengali it was. They went on to help Latika Khosla (from Freedom Tree) to set up two stores, one in Mumbai and another one in Goa. The house that they finalized on was larger than what Freedom Tree really needed, who were then keen to partner with a local cafe, which would just be the perfect thing to do, in so charming a space. “Now, Poonam is a veteran F & B professional, having spent over 15 years in hospitality. The hanging painted note pads, a set of frames displaying work of designers’ in the waiting area; the coloured frames showing the key cities the designers have worked for and a chalkboard to scribble and sketch, create fun in the working atmosphere. Crazy imagination to exact implication is what Ink studio’s expertise is in and that’s what gets reflected in their workspace. ED was established in 2004 by a team of self motivated people – Rajiv Parekh, Ekta

Puri, Apoorva Shroff and Maithili Raut, empowered to act with a purpose. The purpose was to set up a design practice that has a process oriented approach to design. Their assignments include product design, interior design, architectural design and urban design. The process and approach towards each is equally rigorous and comprehensive. Their designs accommodate the ‘perceptions’ of their clients and understand that there are no absolute solutions to any design project and here we have a minimalistic 4,000sqft office

A non-conventional grain travertine wall, acts as the backdrop to the reception area. A curved reception desk peels off this wall creating a sense of invitation and direction into the office space. Two executive cabins are located just off the reception area. These are simplistically designed with modern straight lines to optimize the functionality of the space. These cabins are oversized compared to regular office cabins,

A luxurious outlay makes way for a large L-shaped cabin with a desk at one end of the L-shaped room, a conference table towards one side and a lounge like meeting space on the other. Plush leather couches with two oversized chairs, give a luxurious vibe to the space. The partition in the ceiling separates the conference table and lounge is clad in mirror giving the notion of an endless ceiling. This combined with the silver leafing on the ceiling, adds depth and detail to the space. The conference table and lounge open up onto a landscaped terrace, which is a breath

of fresh air amidst the densely populated neighborhood. From the director’s side of the table is a connection to the conference room, which can also be connected from the reception area, for visitors to be taken in directly. The waiting area has two senior manager cabins attached to it, while the main staff area and service facilities are housed in the back. The client was very particular about wanting an office with minimum maintenance and this was achieved by finding innovative practical solutions to designs ideas without compromising the aesthetic of the space. One such example of this was using a steel shoe under each door so that the wood doesn’t get spoilt, when the floor is being mopped. www.redarchitects.in
