A Perfectly Symmetrical Design Scheme Aligned with Luxury and Comfort

THE KARLSSON PROJECT BY WEST OF MAIN

“The walk-in closet is complete with a central island, personal vanity space and window seating. The island, measuring ten foot in length, is positioned in the centre of the space and runs the length of the closet, providing a work space and an additional accessory and clothing storage.”

West of Main were tasked with combining the existing contemporary architectural features of the property with a modern intervention, which resulted in a space that exudes luxury and comfort. Included in the design scheme are metallic finishes and carefully selected unique pieces, adding an artistic and high-fashion edge to every space within the interior. West of Main are an Ottawa based design firm, that aim to create “beautiful spaces that complement beautiful lives.”

A key aspect of the design, as Sascha Lafleur, co-founder and lead designer of West of Main described, is the master closet. “The complex shape and scale of the space challenged our team to create something that is both functional, aesthetically pleasing and that considers the needs and desires of the client.” The creation of this space was a collaborative effort; it combined four existing rooms with differentiating ceiling heights and shapes. The final product “respects the existing contemporary style of the home, and integrated it with modern luxury and high fashion style.”

The walk-in closet is complete with a central island, personal vanity space and window seating. The island, measuring ten foot in length, is positioned in the centre of the space and runs the length of the closet, providing a work space and an additional accessory and clothing storage. This has been achieved by integrating the original space with a supplementary guest room. Upon entering the closet, rich charcoal cabinetry is paired with a classic door profile, brushed brass hardware and alpine white engineered maple flooring, to evoke a sense of masculinity. The space opens up seamlessly into a classic white closet complete with thoughtful details in every direction, adding a sense of glamour and luxury. The furthest site line pulls the eye towards a gown closet, enclosed in beautiful illuminated glass millwork. Adjacent to the gown closet is a series of shelves lining the walls.

West of Main’s Glebe Project won the award for Bespoke Cabinetry/ Installation at The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019 - 10th Anniversary. When asked why she feels The International Design & Architecture Awards are important, Lafleur described how “Behind every project is a hardworking and passionate team that spends countless hours planning, creating and finalising designs with the hope of creating something that not only will exceed the expectations of their client, but will also be innovative, inspirational and influential to the world of design.” She also stated that the Awards “recognise this, and provide a platform for firms around the globe to come together to celebrate the accomplishments of their peers. It is a space to inspire and be inspired for the betterment of the industry.”

The design of the home ensures an optimal functionality and flow between each space. The closet particularly attends to this, by ebbing and flowing to the asymmetrical shape of the home. Subtle elements of high fashion can be found in each room, whilst also respecting and embracing the individuality of their function. The den and loft were converted into an Old Hollywood-inspired home theatre. The deep rich tones of the seagrass wallpaper is paired with dark oak panel to create an organic and cosy cave. The space is completed with a cloud sofa, ottomans and an oversized gilded globe light fixture, making the space incredibly intimate.

The design of the living room showcases the high-fashion sensibility that is found throughout the home with the luxurious Tibetan wool and brass chairs, as well as a graphite mixed media pop art styling. A floor-to-ceiling, thin marbleinspired porcelain fireplace provides a contemporary edge to the fireplace, while a wool and viscose blend rug from India grounds the design. Similarly, the ‘Man Cave’ of the project was designed to host an entire hockey team. With a twelve person bar, multiple TV’s, a wine cellar, draft bar, heated flooring and a pure memory foam sofa, the space optimises functionality and style in a variety of ways. The space is complete with dark oak cabinetry, a black glass wall and metallic finishes adds depth and sophistication to the space.

Influenced by designs from around the world, West of Main can assist clients in developing connections to styles inspired by cultured and diversified by texture. With a belief that natural elements possess a timeless beauty, West of Main’s designs combine nature with modern pieces to create a chic, elegant and unique style. This is true of the Karlsson Project, which brings together an existing interesting architectural style with modern, beautiful twists, that suit the needs of the client. They have developed the property into a multi-functional space, with each room having its own purpose and character.
