Our mission statement at design et al fourteen years ago, when we launched the title, proclaimed “a magazine should lead and not follow, it should be bold enough to inspire and push boundaries previously unexplored.” We have always aimed to do this; it is not enough merely to report on trends or directions our aim has been to define and lead. However, somewhere in the midst of running a title which turns into a series of different titles, design books, awards a decade or so later, I have to admit this strong and bold mission statement becomes a little diluted in practice.
stand alongside the established fortnightly Superyacht & Aviation Edit providing up to date news, projects and the new collections that we endorse. This is not advertising driven, this is us as a title, as a collection of titles, putting our stamp of approval on new releases and design schemes we endorse. It is our objective opinion, we trust this counts for something in a world where PR companies push their client’s products and projects in the face of magazine editors and press each day... we don’t succumb to that. Quite simply, if we don’ t like it, it’s not in.
I think this is inevitable, but in recent weeks and months, as I have revisited this statement, I have decided to once again sharpen practices up and live and work by my earlier mission statement. Fourteen years ago, as a new title we were bold, brave and keen to carve out a new area of the market. Today we are older and wiser, but as keen to retain the edge design et al once created.
This month some of our endorsed lines and collections can be seen in design et al recommends the first news section within this issue and one that will become a regular feature each month. We have also featured a broad-based selection of projects shortlisted for this year’s International Design & Architecture Awards. Over the next few months, you will have the opportunity to see more of the shortlisted projects for this year ahead of voting opening in August and your chance to vote then.
With this in mind, we have put our thoughts into practice and this month launched two new fortnightly digital news edits: The Superyacht Interior Edit and The Design Edit, they will

“Major Interiors distilled the aura into its fundamental elements of a barrel-vaulted ceiling framed with carefully selected mouldings to evoke the emotion of antiquity.”
Major Interiors were approached by a client to create a modern and sleek home, converted from a traditional early twentieth century Vancouver Character Home, into a contemporary twenty-first century luxury residence. Casa Giardino encapsulates the client’s personality, who as an avid traveller, had the desire to incorporate elements of both old world antiquity and clean-lined modern living. In creating the interior aesthetic, Major Interiors took inspiration from the existing home, while refining the essence of the client’s desires. The client purchased the early twentieth century character home, wanting to preserve a part of Vancouver’s history and wanted to create a home as part of their legacy for future generations. The owner chose to undertake the gruelling task to renovate, expand and integrate the expanded structure within the natural surrounding elements. The design process required the team to conduct numerous meetings with the client to understand the nuances of their family lifestyle and create a home with elements that addressed everyone’s persona in a subtle and unexpected way. The property’s foyer drew inspiration from Italian Renaissance ceilings. Major Interiors distilled the aura into its fundamental elements of a barrel-vaulted ceiling framed with carefully selected mouldings to evoke the emotion of antiquity. Intricate fresco ceiling paintings were replaced with delicate shimmering silver leaf applique combined with a sculptural artisan glass custom light fixture suspended over an intricate mosaic floor. Majestic French doors with sidelights allows access to a private balcony, which in turn expands the space and providing a limitless feel to the design. Encircling the bedroom is a walk-in closet with a tinted glass-top island which serves to showcase the owner’s wardrobe accessories. Journeying down into the basement, 22 design et al
the eleven foot high ceilings gives the lower level a feeling of spaciousness and elegance. Focussing on casual group entertainment, as well as personal wellness, the basement contains a large recreation room, wet bar, wine wall, large screen TV, and a room with a billiard table. Additionally, the space provides a tiered theatre that can accomodate for more than eight guests, as well as an exercise room that is adjacent to the sunken patio and spa-room. While the foyer, living and dining room create the formal entertaining areas of the home, the true heart of the property lies in the kitchen and family room where there is a delicate blend of traditional details balanced with contemporary elements to reflect the modern lifestyle of the client and their family. A modern Snaidero kitchen was chosen to express the sons penchant for exotic hyper cars. The sculptural curvilinear lines of the island leg, the contours of the cabinets, the organic form of the island counter and the matte metallic paint finish are all elements common with modern hyper cars. A large custom curved ceiling moulding blends the lower ceiling with the upper ceiling and continues the softness of the island while respecting the traditional motif. A scullery kitchen is neatly tucked behind the main kitchen and is equally well appointed with matching cabinets and an additional set of Miele appliances. Major Interiors were presented with the challenge of being faced with a more compact footprint, so thoughtful consideration of the room proportions and efficient space planning provided the client with a comfortable home with a timeless design. The interior design firm worked extensively with teams of craftsmen from master tile setters, stonemasons, fine cabinetry makers, to faux finish painters and a glass artisan to develop artistic glass installations within various areas of the home.
The furnishings in the family room and nook echo and reinforce the softness of the sculptural island leg. The seating is upholstered in lush velvet, creating a soft finish to compliment the matte cabinet doors, while deliberately contrasting with the polished floors. The nook and kitchen overlook the rear gardens while the family room incorporates a twelve foot wide folding door system, expanding the room into a covered outdoor eating area and creates a larger sense of space. The Casa Giardino project saw Major Interiors take home the award for Kitchen Design Over £100,000 at The International Design and Architecture Awards - 10th Anniversary, as well as being shortlisted for Residential £2.5 Million Plus, and Interior Design Scheme - Global. Speaking about the importance of the awards, William Chan said “The awards provide a far-reaching audience of like-minded groups working on spectacular projects. They are also a fantastic platform to reach a luxury-oriented audience.” Major Interiors Inc. have created a design which achieves a fine balance between preserving the aura of the original 20th century home and addressing the modern lifestyle of the family. This was the initial challenge for the team, as the client required Major Interiors Inc. to blend both old world antiquity and modern living. This was overcome by a great deal of research by the design team, such as reviewing a variety of inspirational images from the client’s travels and studying Vancouver’s historic homes, they distilled key elements to create a unifying aesthetic. The outcome of the project is a luxury home that boasts a minimal and modern kitchen, whilst remaining in the context of a traditional early twentieth century Vancouver Character Home. As with the home before it, the client hopes that this home will endure for decades to come.

design et al recommends Below Left: EDITION Wallpaper Collection by Zimmer + Rohde EDITION – the issuing or publication of a work and/ or its origin story; the opportunity to get a close and immersive look behind the scenes. Zimmer + Rohde’s EDITION wallpaper collection is focussed on the process used to manufacture it, achieved by highlighting the craftsmanship that goes into creating the fabrics, either as a base material, texture or appliqué. In seeking out its origins, EDITION returns to its creative roots: the colour, material and manufacture process. In an abstract expressionist style, the collection experiments with coloured fields, the application of colour, the blending of materials, and various different layering techniques. Just like the collector’s and luxury editions are, all wallpapers were originally a handcrafted product. To create the illusion of depth you find in CREASE, delicate textile fabrics are carefully dyed, pleated and then finished. MATRIX synthesises coloured, cut, frayed and appliquéd pieces of fabric to complete the puzzle. RAFFIA PLAIN is a richly textured wallcovering that paints the tale of natural fibres from the raffia palm, which is native to Madagascar, and woven on traditional handlooms. EDITION represents both a return to the roots and Zimmer + Rohde’s new and expanded in-house expertise in textiles.
Above Right: Christopher Farr Since its inception, Christopher Farr has set out to bring together the creative vision of modern artists and designers with the ancient craft traditions of the great weaving cultures of the world. Woven is a compelling demonstration of that mission in practice. Earlier this year, the British-born, LA-based fashion designer Gregory Parkinson spent time at Christopher Farr’s weaving mill in India, working with the weavers to explore alternative approaches to conventional rug-making. The result is a collection that not only expresses Parkinson’s peerless affinity with colour, but also demonstrates a variety of unorthodox weaving and making techniques not found anywhere else in the Christopher Farr collection. The collection includes the use of space-dyed yarns to create intriguing colour effects and the application of different materials, such as wool and hemp, as warp and weft threads to achieve striking new frontiers in textural richness and variety. Woven reaffirms Christopher Farr’s commitment to exploring the possibilities of weaving as a craft, and captures the studio’s undimmed curiosity as to what can happen when craft practices dating back centuries meet the visionary aesthetic ideas of today Opposite page, bottom: : John Pawson X Cocoon by C.P. Hart Re-defining bathroom minimalism, the new John Pawson Collection with Dutch designer brand Cocoon, is an industrial-inspired, architectural masterpiece. Each piece in the collection, consisting of basin mixers, floor-standing bath spouts, overhead and hand-held showers, honours the ‘golden ratio’, creating perfectly proportioned and beautifully striking brassware alternatives. Built to last, the entire collection is made from AISI316 marine grade stainless steel and is available in three colours: Brushed Stainless Steel, Brushed Gold and Dark Grey. The collection is packed with new technological features, including NANO anti fingerprint coating, the latest water-saving systems and a fully adjustable build-in system for easy installation. “The walk-in closet is complete with a central island, personal vanity space and window seating. The island, measuring ten foot in length, is positioned in the centre of the space and runs the length of the closet, providing a work space and an additional accessory and clothing storage.”
West of Main were tasked with combining the existing contemporary architectural features of the property with a modern intervention, which resulted in a space that exudes luxury and comfort. Included in the design scheme are metallic finishes and carefully selected unique pieces, adding an artistic and high-fashion edge to every space within the interior. West of Main are an Ottawa based design firm, that aim to create “beautiful spaces that complement beautiful lives.” A key aspect of the design, as Sascha Lafleur, co-founder and lead designer of West of Main described, is the master closet. “The complex shape and scale of the space challenged our team to create something that is both functional, aesthetically pleasing and that considers the needs and desires of the client.” The creation of this space was a collaborative effort; it combined four existing rooms with differentiating ceiling heights and shapes. The final product “respects the existing contemporary style of the home, and integrated it with modern luxury and high fashion style.” The walk-in closet is complete with a central island, personal vanity space and window seating. The island, measuring ten foot in length, is positioned in the centre of the space and runs the length of the closet, providing a work space and an additional accessory and clothing storage. This has been achieved by integrating the original space with a supplementary guest room. Upon entering the closet, rich charcoal cabinetry is paired with a classic door profile, brushed brass hardware and alpine white engineered maple flooring, to evoke a sense of masculinity. The space 32 design et al
opens up seamlessly into a classic white closet complete with thoughtful details in every direction, adding a sense of glamour and luxury. The furthest site line pulls the eye towards a gown closet, enclosed in beautiful illuminated glass millwork. Adjacent to the gown closet is a series of shelves lining the walls. West of Main’s Glebe Project won the award for Bespoke Cabinetry/ Installation at The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019 - 10th Anniversary. When asked why she feels The International Design & Architecture Awards are important, Lafleur described how “Behind every project is a hardworking and passionate team that spends countless hours planning, creating and finalising designs with the hope of creating something that not only will exceed the expectations of their client, but will also be innovative, inspirational and influential to the world of design.” She also stated that the Awards “recognise this, and provide a platform for firms around the globe to come together to celebrate the accomplishments of their peers. It is a space to inspire and be inspired for the betterment of the industry.” The design of the home ensures an optimal functionality and flow between each space. The closet particularly attends to this, by ebbing and flowing to the asymmetrical shape of the home. Subtle elements of high fashion can be found in each room, whilst also respecting and embracing the individuality of their function. The den and loft were converted into an Old Hollywood-inspired home theatre. The deep rich tones of the seagrass wallpaper is paired with dark oak
panel to create an organic and cosy cave. The space is completed with a cloud sofa, ottomans and an oversized gilded globe light fixture, making the space incredibly intimate. The design of the living room showcases the high-fashion sensibility that is found throughout the home with the luxurious Tibetan wool and brass chairs, as well as a graphite mixed media pop art styling. A floor-to-ceiling, thin marbleinspired porcelain fireplace provides a contemporary edge to the fireplace, while a wool and viscose blend rug from India grounds the design. Similarly, the ‘Man Cave’ of the project was designed to host an entire hockey team. With a twelve person bar, multiple TV’s, a wine cellar, draft bar, heated flooring and a pure memory foam sofa, the space optimises functionality and style in a variety of ways. The space is complete with dark oak cabinetry, a black glass wall and metallic finishes adds depth and sophistication to the space. Influenced by designs from around the world, West of Main can assist clients in developing connections to styles inspired by cultured and diversified by texture. With a belief that natural elements possess a timeless beauty, West of Main’s designs combine nature with modern pieces to create a chic, elegant and unique style. This is true of the Karlsson Project, which brings together an existing interesting architectural style with modern, beautiful twists, that suit the needs of the client. They have developed the property into a multi-functional space, with each room having its own purpose and character.

Speaking about how the design integrates into the wider environment, Nicola Sampson stated “The interior design appeals to local and international markets, especially those looking to make the UK their second home. The house itself is nestled into the surroundings with no one overlooking.”
A unique and exclusive 19.5 square foot house situated in Sunningdale, Ascot, set over three floors in 1.75 acres of secluded landscaped gardens, overlooking the Sunningdale golf course. The second floor has guest accommodation, a cinema and guest W.C, as well as an entertainment space with large folding doors onto a rooftop terrace with stunning views. The secret door connecting the library and study is an exciting surprise to visitors of the house 44 design et al
and the dramatic silk wallpaper in the dining room lends itself to hosting lavish dinner parties. The subtle incorporation of modern AV and technology was also key. Consero London created a classical country kitchen with a modern and luxurious touch. The kitchen features a large Lacanche range cooker, Sub-zero wine fridges, a hidden pantry cupboard and feature calacatta marble top. Langstaff-Ellis combined traditional style with Rock Maple raised and fielded doors throughout the kitchen’s cabinetry, flanked by feature antique mirrored doors with fretwork overlay detailing. The kitchen’s design echoes that of the rest of the property, timeless luxury blended with modernity, a home that a family could truly enjoy. “There is a great connection between the architecture, the interior and the location. It is a wonderful combination that ticks all of the boxes of appropriateness.”
Brian Worthington & Associates were enlisted to carry out a complete restoration and renovation of an important early 20th Century country house on the gold coast of Long Island, built for the Taft family, a former president of the United States of America. The award-winning interior design team won the award for Luxury Residence Americas at The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019 - 10th Anniversary. Speaking about the awards, Brian Worthington, Principal and Creative Director of Brian Worthington & Associates commented, “They are becoming increasingly important since they give such a wonderful global and domestic perspective of the most beautiful spaces being created in the 21st Century.” The team wanted to respect the architecture and create a harmonious interior to the exterior of the property with beautifully scaled and proportioned furniture. Understated elegance was paramount to Brian Worthington & Associates philosophy as well as the clients understanding prior to the project’s design. The majority of the furniture used throughout the design is antique and vintage sourced from the UK and France. The goal was to blend British modern art with the 18th Century and early 19th Centuries. The design team wanted there to be a great connection between the architecture, the interior and the location. It was crucial that the monochromatic back-drop did not compete with the natural beautiful surroundings of the property. Brian Worthington & Associates had complete control of the turn key installation and an unlimited budget. They selected every element of the interior, including the furniture, fabrics, carpets, 56 design et al
books, artwork and all accessories. Everything was chosen under the detailed eye of Brian to ensure they respected and enhanced the restoration of the interior. The design works so well because the period details are correct and incredibly subtle with unequal refinement. The design has a classical foundation with contemporary 21st Century requirements of how one lives today in an incredibly hectic world. It is an oasis from the second one drives through the driveway to when one walks into the entry foyer. It sets the tone for this incredible relationship between the interior spaces and exterior of the property. A particular highlight of the property is the man-made pond below the lower lawn at the rear of the property, recommended by Brian Worthington & Associates, of which the clients happily approved. The pond is a true exterior feature of the property and is now a focal point from the drawing room and dining room. Surrounded by an abundance of lush greenery and a variety of foliage, Longwood is at the heart of nature and looks truly picturesque in its setting. The location of the property has been taken advantage of by installing water features, various seating areas where residents can relax outside or entertain and private pool area, surrounded by hedges for privacy. Upon entering the property, one is greeted with a minimal, yet timeless palette of magnolia juxtaposed with rich dark wood and golds. Natural light streams into the hallway through the classic French doors, allowing residents and guests a view of the pond feature. The minimal colour palette translates throughout the property adding a sense of cohesiveness to the property.
Upon entering the living area the cream fabrics and textured are balanced beautifully with the inclusion of dark green cushions arranged on the sofa. The cream tone of the room is striking against the backdrop of various green foliage that can be seen through the windows panelling the room. The lounge space allows one to enjoy nature from the comfort of their sofa, even in poorer weather conditions. Speaking about how the design integrates into the wider environment, Brian Worthington said, “There is a great connection between the architecture, the interior and the location. It is a wonderful combination that ticks all of the boxes of appropriateness.” Brian Worthington & Associates have created a property that is timeless in its design and filled with understated elegance. The property includes details that intricately links the interior with the exterior and the property’s natural surroundings. No detail was spared throughout the design process, with specialist and artisan skills used such as the French polishing by a European craftsman, the restoration of important antique furniture and Brian Worthington & Associates own brilliant curtain maker. The design has been carefully curated to reference the 18th Century and early 19th Century and blend this with British modern art. It was essential that monochromatic backdrop did not compete with the natural beautiful surroundings, however, Brian Worthington & Associates have managed to integrate the design seamlessly into its surroundings. Longwood has been designed with a quintessential English elegance that is both functional and timeless for a modern day family.

“The overall project goal was to increase the luxury project value and create a contemporary, modern look that would appeal to potential buyers, whilst still being livable for the family.” The Villa Zolyno project is located in the area of Swiss forest in Vilnius city regional park, located in Lithuania. The twenty five year old heritage residence spans over five hundred square metres and is steeped in cultural history. Liquid Design Solutions were required to revoke the dated look of the villa’s interior and instead, replace it with a design that was contemporary and modern. In order to do this, the team were asked to completely change the heating system, main windows, doors, flooring, lighting and furniture. The objective was to raise the interest of the residential property among the targeted audience of potential buyers, via creative design elements and contemporary design scheme. It was essential that the design would accommodate the inherited family, as they still desired to live and enjoy the property for a few more years before they wanted to put the property on the market. The family understood that some personalised home decor solutions would have to be replaced. In addition, exterior work was already in progress to ensure the property would reach the maximum result of value upgrade. The property was developed twenty five years ago when Lithuania became an independent country by an order of the German expat, who moved to the country with his family. The architectural project was initially ordered by the Polish embassy, but finally completed by the German owner. Following his passing, this old heritage villa was overtaken by his son and redesigned. The overall project goal was to increase the luxury project value and create a contemporary, modern look that would appeal to potential buyers, whilst still being livable for the family. The Villa Zolyno project has seen Liquid Design Solutions shortlisted for three categories, Interior Design Scheme - Europe, Residential £2.5-5 Million (Property by Value) and Luxury Residence - Europe, in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020. Speaking about the Awards, Simona Heinsohn, Principal of “Liquid Design Partners” studio/ Owner of the property company “Vilniaus turto valdymas, Ltd, commented “It is very important for the recognition of the 64 design et al
design studio as well as for the property market. We believe it will help to sell the property for proper market value, so we are aiming to win an International Design & Architecture Award.” Leading into the property, one is greeted by an extensive foyer and living room, which feature particularly high ceilings and represent the heart of this interior design project. Guests are greeted by the symmetrical style foyer wall, which is comprised of digital art pictures which illustrates tech and practical functionality. The villa’s previous formal dining area has been transformed into an informal setting lounge, with a strike of colour contrast and art deco items. The room is decorated in a neutral grey colour scheme, offset by the distinct deep violet seating and warm yellow lighting which is surprising and beautiful. There are various different sizes of leisure seating to choose from in this space, manifesting the visual appeal of la dolce vita life making it suitable for cocktail evenings, or even serving as home working space. The result is an authentic atmosphere which visually exposes the elegant and trendy attraction. In addition, the villa’s living space is situated to the left, which can be entered through the archway. The exquisite living space features a leather corner sofa, luxurious tencel carpet, panoramic windows which open out to a scenic view and make the design of the villa truly exclusive. Moreover, a key element of this room is the feature TV wall which is decorated with art wallpaper and acts as a background for a symmetrically built-in bookshelf with glass doors. There is also a fireplace incorporated into the space, which is finished with a black granite sheet to improve its previous shape. Despite the room being minimalistic in its presentation, emphasis is added through the large windows which look out towards a forest, allowing natural light to flow in and creating an atmosphere of minimalistic luxury and comfort. Stepping through to the kitchen, it mirrors the grey and white decor which adorns the villa’s other rooms. The kitchen maintains the minimalist characteristics of the property and features a kitchen bench and
luxury kitchen island, creating a private booth effect. All the built-in furniture was made by Lithuanian craftsman and was designed specifically for this project. In addition, the team wanted to ensure each area of the home was easily accessible, hence the stairs leading up to the room which highlight the distinct residential styles and ensures an organic flow. The staircase leading to the second floor was created with a new structure and designed with a sculptural look and special detailing. Bright, natural and white materials were used for the finishing of the floor. The stairs were covered with natural black limestone and contrasting shiny tiles. To reinforce the design’s cohesive flow, the same natural black stone material was used later for the outdoor terrace and facade decor. Liquid Design Solutions stated that the aim of the design was “to remodel the space functionally and to create a visual balance between straight and curved lines, as some of the architectural structures had to remain.” The Interior Design firm have done just that, with their redesign solutions making a huge difference to the overall feeling of each space within the property. The team have ensured that there is a cohesive flow throughout the property, incorporating archways to access social areas, such as the kitchen, living room, and the informal lounge, and ensuring each space feels open to the rest of the property. Liquid Design Solutions have designed an interior that is sympathetic to the building’s history, whilst ensuring it has a refreshed and more contemporary feel for the inherited family who can enjoy the property before they put it on the market. The property is luxuriously understated inside, with its minimal decor and surprising pops of colour, it is sure to catch the eyes of many potential buyers. The Lithuanian Interior Design team began this extensive interior design renovation project in 2017 and completed it in 2019 after feeling that they had created the epitome of comfortable, luxury living in Villa Zolyno.

“There is a great connection between the architecture, the interior and the location. It is a wonderful combination that ticks all of the boxes of appropriateness.”
Radiating a bold, warm and masculine energy, Urban Industrial Abode is timeless, simple, and intricate in its detailing and design. Situated amongst a lush green environment in Johannesburg, South Africa, the residence possesses deep contrasts in its architectural style, yet works harmoniously well together, creating a symbiosis that establishes a perfect space for comfortable family living. Founded in Lanseria, Johannesburg, Veld Architects execute a professional and passionate approach, specialising in detailing and manufacturing furnishings to deliver intricately designed interiors and architecture, fulfilling their clients’ vision of their perfect homes. The team at Veld Architects adopted a strong philosophy towards sustainable design, emphasising that while they are followers of form, remaining true to functional aspects of a home are essential. The vision of Urban Industrial Abode was to combine the natural surroundings with masculine architecture, creating a family home with a softened touch that retains its striking, unique style. The design brief required Veld Architects to blur the lines between interior and exterior, as the clients desired to maximise the interior space, celebrating their spacious garden and the large trees that are a part of the wider environment. A central courtyard was designed to form a safe space against the elements, yet the space incorporates more of the natural environment at its centre. Large stack doors and windows are designed to open up, providing an abundance of warm light and breathtaking views of the garden, accentuating the visual aspect of the wider landscape. The project presented many challenges for the team at Veld Architects, as they endeavoured to deliver the perfect residence for their clients. The team 74 design et al
introduced wood as an external material, as well as grey and earth-coloured tones that create a contrast with the charcoal elements in the design. The implementation of natural elements were designed to soften the exterior, creating a stark comparison with the cladded masculine façade and simplistic forms. Furthermore, the site is situated in a panhandle, which was an initial challenge to address in terms of the approach to the home. However, Veld Architects designed a creative and versatile solution to overcome such an obstacle. The garages of the residence form the first point of entry, while the introduction of a stunning roof garden and a fine-detail, custommade front door creates a more inviting approach against the stark concrete block. The implementation of natural materials is illustrated throughout the interior of the home. Vibrant colours are used to accentuate the elements, and ceramic custom tiles are incorporated to create a homely and unique atmosphere. The move to include such materials in the design initially presented itself as an area of difficulty for Veld Architects, however such a design process was important for the team, and their hard work has brought a purposeful warmth to the interiors. A seamless and balanced design flows throughout the interior and exterior architecture, with meticulous detailing of all the elements. Describing the journey to get the project to its final stage, Gillian Holl, Principal of Veld Architects, highlights that “thinking out the box” was an important part of the process in order to “achieve objects of beauty without the necessary resources at hand.” Urban Industrial Abode celebrates its cultural roots, as custom work was designed in conjunction with various artists and craftsmen to celebrate the South African narrative in design.
For their unique and bold design of Urban Industrial Abode, Veld Architects have been shortlisted for Residential Property Value £5 Million Plus in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020. Commenting on the influence of the Awards, Gillian Holl highlights that “it acknowledges great design and inspires us to do better, not only for our clients, but for the environment and all humankind.” A key aspect of the design is the main entrance western wall, an in situ wall on the western façade. The goal was to generate interest for guests entering from the western side, as well as establishing a relationship between the visitor and the context. Due to the wall being on the western side, the team had to implement light boxes that would allow the guests to glimpse at the vista views without sacrificing comfort due to the harsh western sun. Such a move led to small protrusions in the concrete, successfully establishing the connection between the visitor and the design, and further allowing enough light and pattern to enthral the observer. The homeowners of Urban Industrial Abode have expressed their satisfaction and enjoyment of achieving their perfect residence, commenting that “Veld Architects facilitated the building of our dream home both fulfilling the brief and marrying a stark building to its natural surroundings.” With a touch of personalisation, warm and inviting interiors, and a strong exterior, Veld Architects have delivered a perfect sanctuary for their client’s. Urban Industrial Abode is designed to provide safety from the harsh elements of the outdoors, yet incorporates well into its environment, celebrating the South African climate in all its glory.

“The infinity pool is a highlight for the residence, as it provides breathtaking views of the harbour, while the spa creates a dynamic space for relaxing under the cool summer nights.”
Breathtaking and grand, the Jamestown Retreat sits peacefully along the Dutch Harbour in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Originally a small, dark, and narrow residence, Davitt Design Build have transformed the residence into a spectacular 5,116 sq. ft. home that encapsulates the owner’s desires to have more open space with an outdoor living area that functions as an indoor living space. Jamestown Retreat is the perfect haven to seek out peace and quiet, providing a safe and comfortable environment for its homeowners and their growing family. The redesigned residence boasts four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms with picturesque views of Narragansett Bay. Completing the design with an infinity pool and spa, the welcoming and idyllic layout of Jamestown Retreat is perfect for visiting friends, family, and grandchildren. The infinity pool is a highlight for the residence, as it provides breathtaking views of the harbour, while the spa creates a dynamic space for relaxing on cool summer nights. Adding to the uniqueness of the design, there is a captivating new staircase with a seashell fossil wood inlay at the base landing, and a tile inlay at the middle landing. The staircase boasts a bright and open demeanour, contrasting greatly with the dark and cramped space that the residence once was. The intricate and elegant details of the staircase is an example of exceptional quality and craftsmanship, while elevating itself to the next level of coastal building design. The infinity pool/ spa and staircase are particular favourites for Davitt Design Build as they add to the unique character and style of the home. Commenting on the infinity pool and spa, Dave Whitney, General Manager of Davitt Design Build, explains that “having a functional outdoor space for gathering while optimising the beautiful views was the goal for transforming this outdoor space.” The original kitchen, deemed to be outdated and too small has been redesigned into a contemporary and expansive space, with an eye-catching functional island. Natural light is 82 design et al
dispersed throughout the entire kitchen space, complementing the warm and serene colour palette of the interior. The bright feel to the space is enhanced by the open floor plan which combines the newly renovated kitchen, dining area, and living area. In doing so, the scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean can be enjoyed from inside, and further creates an inviting space for small and intimate family meals, or lavish dinner parties for guests. A space has been created for a new home office and study with a stylish round window, which carries on the theme of allowing an abundance of natural light into the interiors. Travelling into the stateof-the-art master bedroom, the space has been transformed into a tranquil retreat with large windows and deck access. The master bathroom has been transformed from a small and inefficient space into a spacious, bright bathroom with dual shower heads and vanities for optimum function. The surrounding outdoor area is complete with a kitchen and an abundance of seating areas, positioned in the retractable screened-in porch and outdoor patio which is ideal for entertaining and relaxing. The retractable screen porch provides a beautiful and relaxing space that is complete with a clear grade fir beadboard on the ceilings and idyllic views of the ocean. Davitt Design Build have created optimum functionality by installing a button, where a simple push will draw the screens shut, preserving the area from any unwanted insects and pests. For their beautiful and extravagant design, Davitt Design Build has been shortlisted for Beach House, Regeneration / Restoration (all property values), and Residential £1-2.5 Million in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020. Dave Whitney observes that the Awards “aligns with Davitt’s luxury and high-end residential construction market”, and to receive such an award “amongst top-competition and well respected peers in the industry is important for our brand image.” Whitney further expresses that The International Design & Architecture
Awards are an important aspect for Davitt Design Build as they help the firm to continue to sustain growth, as well as recognising that receiving such an international award is a critical next step and important for Davitt Design Build’s brand image. A recognised leader in coastal building regulation, Davitt Design Build specialise in creating beautiful and luxurious coastal homes, showcasing an impressive forty years of hard work. They emphasise their strict work ethic to pay close attention to detail and ensure that the fragile coastal ecosystem is protected. This process presented itself as a challenge for Davitt Design Build, as the team had to work closely with the stringent guidelines of the Coastal Resource Management Council (CRMC). Developing a close relationship with CRMC, Davitt Design Build have effectively established the Jamestown Retreat as an eco-friendly residence that ultimately preserves, protects, and integrates well with the natural coastline. Davitt Design Build ensures a refined, effective and efficient process, taking time to inform their clients of each step. Whitney asserts that the firm offers “sound advice and eliminates the confusion and frustration that is often associated with traditional custom home building.” In order to keep clients’ budget on track, Davitt Design Build price each section of the custom home as they draw it, guaranteeing that the client is always in control of their budget. The owner of Jamestown Retreat adds that the team were “receptive to our input, transparent in their pricing, responsive to our concerns, and eager to generate new ideas.” Working collaboratively as a team between the architect, designer, and builder, the level of transparency is an integral part of the overall process. Jamestown Retreat is the perfect sanctuary to escape everyday life, surrounded by scenic views of the sea and the refreshing ocean breeze, it is a home that will provide a comfortable and safe environment for the family, who can indulge in added luxuries and elegance exuded by the opulent and timeless design.

“The residence provides multiple options which allow for guests to gather or for one to spend time alone relaxing, the options are endless.” Nestled in the heart of the natural desert landscape of Las Vegas, Nevada, is Denton House Design’s latest residential project, Cayambe. The inspiration behind the project was the client’s home country of Ecuador and its renowned volcanic complex, Nevado Cayambe. With this in mind, Denton House Design Studio set upon creating a property that would incorporate tailored elegance, have a commanding presence, yet be respectful to its natural surrounds and would surpass the client’s desires. The project was to act as a true oasis in the desert. The client requested that the design be a balance of clean lines, sleek finishes, have an air of elegance and comfort, and open spaces that could be enjoyed privately or while hosting guests. In addition, the client wanted to incorporate many items from their personal collection of which had its own personality, a challenge which Denton House Design overcame with respect to form and budget, elevating each piece to coincide with the new aesthetic. Cayambe’s architecture imitates the great expanse and dominance of its namesake’s volcanic range, while the interior architecture and design complements the natural tones found in the surrounding landscape. The property’s architecture imitates the great expanse and dominance of the volcanic range, while the interior architecture and design compliments the natural tones found in the surrounding landscape. The juxtaposition of materials and varying textures provides moments of high-contrast and drama as if paying homage to the uniquely snow-capped volcano. Speaking about how the Cayambe project integrates into the wider environment, Rebecca Buchan, Principal at Denton House Design Studio said “Cayambe’s rectilinear forms, respectful materials and canopies extend through the sky, stretching one’s view beyond the elongated mountain range.” The clean lines of the property’s exterior architecture are mirrored throughout the property’s interior. Cayambe is striking in both external and internal appearance. A large portion of Cayambe’s exterior consists of operable glazing, floorto-ceiling windows to feature the unparalleled desert views of Red Rock Canyon during the day, and the gleam of Las Vegas’s infamous Strip in the evening. 94 design et al
Upon entering Cayambe, one is enveloped in opulent comfort and surrounded by supple, yet refined furnishings which add a layer of sophistication and warmth. The property’s connection to the outdoors was of great importance throughout the project, so Denton House Design Studio ensured this was maintained throughout the residence, with furniture spilling through to the outdoors, providing a crisp connection between the interior and exterior environments. The property is fitted with an inspiring library, where one can relax and retire to read their favourite book in a comfortable and serene environment. Describing the library, Rebecca said “The library featured at the front of the property creates a museum-like presence as the glazing captures each studious moment within.” In addition, Denton House Design Studio have provided the client with a seamless kitchen experience, where there is space for the client to host a number of guests. The kitchen’s decor emulates the colours used throughout the property’s exterior, further solidifying the interior’s relationship with the exterior. The kitchen features a beautiful marble island with seating, a cosy informal dining space with further seating options and clever storage solutions which blend seamlessly with the kitchen’s decor, leaving a clean and streamlined appearance throughout the space. Following this is the intimate formal dining area, which features a beautiful glass in-built fireplace and a striking lighting feature which sits overhead of the table. The sculptural lighting piece resembles an interlocking gold chain and is certainly an eye-catching piece. The dining table can seat up to twelve guests and is partly sectioned off from other areas to ensure privacy. A further impressive feature is the extensive wine exhibition to the right of the dining space. In addition, behind the glass wall of wine bottles is a tasting room, where guests can sample a number of wines to pair with dinner or as a digestif. Moreover, the Cayambe property also features five unique bedrooms, a home theatre, various games rooms and elongated terraces. The residence provides multiple options which allow for guests to gather or for one to spend time alone relaxing, the options are endless. Most notable is the property’s
impressive marble bathroom which features a freestanding tub. Speaking about the design of the bathtub, Rebecca commented “We worked with a domestic vendor to create a custom marble tub which was carved from a single block of stone. The artistry and engineering collaboration was inspiring.” The Cayambe project has seen Denton House Design Studio shortlisted for two categories at The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020, Luxury Residence - Global and Luxury Residence – Americas. Rebecca highlights that the “Awards are important for recognising the immense effort put forth by design teams to create exceptional design solutions while allowing our industry to come together and celebrate a collective achievement for design as a whole.” The property is striking in its appearance, with its grand use of stone, metal and glass, which in some cases, can appear lifeless if handled carelessly. Denton House Design Studio carefully considered each material and its relationship to the next, which allowed for a feeling of warmth and connectivity. It is the connection between the interior and exterior which Denton House Design Studio cite as their favourite aspect of the property, describing it as “The interaction which occurs between the interior and exterior is strong. The strength is amplified within the reflection of the facade on the still water of the infinity pool. The interior and exterior materials wrap the structure to create a harmonious composition.” Denton House Design Studio ensured that this seamless transition would allow furniture and the homeowners to mingle indoors and out without restriction. Cayambe is an enviable project which is a true oasis in the desert. Denton House Design Studio ensured that the client’s needs were met and that the project was individual to them, which was achieved by taking inspiration from the client’s home country of Ecuador and its volcanic plains. Cayambe is a feast of clean lines, sleek finishes and incorporates opulent elegance, merged with comfort and a homely feel. The acclaimed interior design firm have produced an incredible and unique design that the client can enjoy, host gatherings, and set up home in for many years to come.

“Sky Lane’s design works so well because of the clever engineering and complex design process that went into completing the overall look of the house. The distinct curvature of its facade drew inspiration from luxury yachts and imbues the entire residence with a feeling of dynamic movement.”
Located in Brentwood, West Los Angeles and situated above the famous Getty Museum is a cutting edge 17,000 square foot modern hillside residence, designed by de Loren & Associates. The incredible project treats its residents to breathtaking views of Los Angeles and the Pacific ocean, all whilst basking in the property’s seventy-five foot infinity pool. The property, aptly named Sky Lane, was designed to be unlike any other home in Los Angeles with visitors entering the residence through its roof. Sky Lane has a unique dynamic facade that wraps around the residence and provides it with a look like no other. The facade is composed of an exterior skeleton that is offset from the building and offers a complex curvature to the residence. The property’s seventyfive foot infinity pool went hand in hand with the design of the house, following the dynamic curvature, allowing the pool to wrap around the terrace and encompass every view available. The site upon which Sky Lane was constructed was un-buildable for over fifty years. Many contractors and engineers attempted to build on the hillside, but it proved too challenging and they were unable to come up with a design solution. Sanam de Loren, CEO of de Loren & Associates, commented on how her company was able to overcome this challenge, “Sky Lane’s design works so well because of the clever engineering and complex design process that went into completing the overall look of the house. The distinct curvature of its facade drew inspiration from luxury yachts, and imbues the entire residence with a feeling of dynamic movement.” In addition, Sanam further states that the building site “required complex engineering calculations and limiting structural parameters that impacted on how I approached the overall design process.” de Loren & Associates ensured that Sky Lane follows the natural curvature provided by the steep hillside of the Brentwood hills. The property has 104 design et al
been intelligently designed to step down with the hillside and is part of the existing landscape rather than imposed structure on the hillside.
sun themselves in the water and a swimup bar, where guests can easily access refreshments without having to leave the pool.
Furthermore, de Loren & Associates have ensured that the property’s interior mirrored its impressive exterior. Sky Lane’s interior features an extensive wine cellar, movie theatre, gym & spa, several large bedrooms, including a beautiful master bedroom, multiple waterfalls, an entertainment room, office, zen garden and a three-hundred square foot living green wall. The home is replete with wellness amenities, including smart home technology, which allows residents to monitor the air and water quality and control.
The Sky Lane project has seen de Loren & Associates shortlisted in four categories at The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020 which are, Kitchen Design Over £50,000, Residential Swimming Pool, Luxury Residence - Global, and Residential £20 Million Plus. Speaking about the Awards, Sanam explained “We are excited for the International Design & Architecture Awards as they promote innovative design at the highest level. It is an opportunity for designers to showcase their work and be critiqued by industry professionals on their design skills and uniqueness. The Design Awards allow their audience to experience exceptional international architecture. We are honored to be part of this.”
Entering the property’s living room, one is immediately enveloped in luxury and comfort. The spacious room features an abundance of seating, whether that be by the impressive fireplace installation, enjoying drinks at the glossy round table, or relaxing in the third seating area with curved grey suede sofas. In addition, there are two bars and a curved sculptural wall in the living room. These were all custom made specifically for the Sky Lane project and were designed to fit the overall aesthetic of the property and accentuate its curves. The sculptures were handmade by Japanese master craftsman, Toshi Kawabata, and made of solid walnut wood. An impressive component of the Sky Lane property is its impressive seventy-five foot infinity pool, which Sanam cites as one of her favourite aspects of the design. The design of the pool was to blend seamlessly with the architecture of the house, following the dynamic curvature, allowing the pool to wrap around the terrace and compass every view available, including the Getty Museum, Downtown Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean. Along with incomparable views, the pool also offers guests the opportunity to relax in the inset jacuzzi, a Baja where one can
de Loren & Associates have designed an incredible property which is unlike any other, offering guests a surprise at every turn, from entering through the property’s roof, to the unparalleled views from the seventy-five foot infinity pool, it is one of a kind. Despite being faced with the initial challenge of building the residence on the hill side, de Loren & Associates managed to successfully produce a property which integrated seamlessly into the Brentwood Hills landscape, following its natural curvature and allowing guests to view the illustrious landscape of the Los Angeles location wherever they may be in the residence. Speaking about the project’s completion, Sanam said “Creating a space that performs on multiple levels of technology to enhance the wellness quality of this home has been a very positive outcome of this project.” Sky Lane is a truly unforgettable property which offers residents and guests everything they could want, in both the exterior and interior of the home.

The residence was built to cater to an animated and modern family, introducing a contemporary style in the interior while incorporating elements of the wider environment. Interior Concept have delivered an exceptional design, that instantly welcomes its guests with a relaxing and soothing impression as soon as one walks through the door. Inspired by the surrounding nature, the natural palettes of the interior allow the colour of water and bright tones to flow smoothly throughout the living spaces. Different types of coloured woods are subtly introduced in the design, creating earthly touches that represent the essence of the coastal landscape. Natural light and views of the beautiful coastal scenery creates a revitalising and calm atmosphere, ideal for a young family and their children. The design of a large, open concept living area generates a perfect space for socialising between hosting family and friends. Furthermore, guests can feel at home instantly with the residence’s warm and inviting touch. The significance of blurring the lines between interior and exterior living spaces is emphasised throughout the residence, as this was an important aspect of the design brief. The location of the residence on the Shediac Bay was not to be overlooked, and Interior Concept worked hard to ensure that this element was incorporated into the interior. Numerous windows were placed around the residence, allowing the picturesque views of the bay to be enjoyed from anywhere within the home. Commenting on the decision to implement the large windows, Patrick Gagnon, Owner of Interior Concept, asserts that 112 design et al
the “windows overseeing the Shediac Bay are by far the best architectural features of that house,” and that the “glass size and proportion were well designed to make the space feel cosy while being so exposed to the exterior.” Incorporating the feel of the environment into the interiors, while creating multiple architectural focal points on the ceiling and around the windows, is what ultimately provides the residence with a classic and timeless style. Classic Coastal Home radiates a beauty like no other, and its well-thought out design was a challenging aspect for Interior Concept, as they were determined to deliver an exceptional home that suitably met the client’s standards. The team at Interior Concept ensured that each stage and detail of the design process was adequately communicated to the contractors, so as to establish a smooth workflow and successful deliverance of the project. Gagnon highlights that ‘Many site visits with the team needed to happen to make sure every detail was taken care of’, showcasing the level of transparency and attention to detail that is part of the work ethos at Interior Concept. The design firm emphasises the importance of building a strong relationship with their clients, as it conducts a seamless process, assuring a smooth client design experience to get the project to its final stage. Prior to building Classic Coastal Home, the team had made 3D visuals in order to help the clients visualise the completed design. By doing so, Interior Concept ensured that no corners were cut and were able to find the “missing pieces” before the construction was complete. For their exceptional and well thought out design of the Classic Coastal Home residence, Interior Concept have been shortlisted for the Beach House and
Residential £1-2.5 Million awards at the International Design & Architecture Awards. Commenting on the importance of the Awards, Patrick Gagnon observes that they encourage the “designer and architects to push their creativity to extensive levels.” Gagnon points out the unique nature of the Awards, and its ability to “outshadow other platforms that may not have any regulations or credits to the designer/architect.” Interior Concept have certainly strived for perfection when executing the design of Classic Coastal Home, as demonstrated through their intricate design work used for the detailed ceiling, custom fireplace mantel, and custom millwork. Expressing these aspects as a key aspect of the design, Gagnon comments that “Having worked so hard to make this perfect, we can really appreciate the final result as it should.” The style and design of Classic Coastal Home is a testament to Interior Concept’s hard work, their client asserts that their “Style provides a calm, clean and inviting environment for our family and friends. We absolutely love our home,” highlighting that the team’s strong work ethic and determination have paid off with the deliverance of Classic Coastal Home. From the moment the idea for Classic Coastal Home was conceived, it was to be an exceptional and timeless design that would serve to rejuvenate and inject a vibrant feeling into anyone who walks between its walls. The exquisite location and refreshing sea air enhances the beauty of the design, complementing the peaceful and comforting tones radiated from the residence. Sitting elegantly on the Shediac Bay shore, Classic Coastal Home is set to be the perfect family home that anyone could wish for.
