Sarah Z Designs is a Miami interior design firm founded by Sarah Zohar. The American designer established her practice in 2009 and specialises in residential decor. The firm prides itself in delivering end-to-end projects while holding itself to the highest standards of excellence.

Tell us a little about your background in design.

I grew up in a family of builders, from a young age that I would be headed in this direction, I was always around construction sites, and had a feel of the industry from early on. When I moved to Miami from New York I went to school at The Arts Institute for Interior Design & that really solidified that this was my passion.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date. I would say landing my first design job, I was already designing for friends and family, and when word got out the referrals just started happening.

How did achieving this make you feel?

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Colorado Coastal By Andrea Schumacher

Design is forever evolving; Trends come and go with the seasons. During the pandemic, we all got a sense of how important it was to really love your home & feel comfortable in your space, I feel like design is moving towards that direction, making your home a place that promotes your well-being and overall health.

Were currently working on a few high ride condos all across Miami, as well as a project in the Bahamas & New York City

Tell us a little more about these project(s)...

Most of these projects are Ocean View, we’re still in the early stages of construction, but we’ll be incorporating ceiling designs, custom lit wall units, & of course biophilic design elements -signature Sarah Z Designs style.

Sarah Z Design used a modern approach to turn this large estate into a piece of art. The sleek marble look is complemented by a blend of different colours, which line immaculate white design with hints of blue and gold. The design brief was to integrate the open concept spaces by eliminating barriers that traditionally separate distinct functional areas.

Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success?

The Palace Bal Harbour residence. The Client gave me Carte Blanche on my design creativity as well as budget, which put this final outcome on a different level of luxury.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

The textures and materials Sarah Z Designs chose, add to the overall aesthetic giving each surface a glossy, polished effect. Both indoor and outdoor areas complement each other to integrate the entire property under one design and blur the lines between the interior and exterior spaces. Each room is adorned with creative pieces of art, that not only add to the attractiveness of the home, but manages to bring a welcoming, relaxed feel as well.

My inspiration is constantly tied to nature & my surroundings, I emphasize in biophilic design, which incorporates our natural surroundings into the interior to create health benefits, serenity & wellness for my clients.

How do you relax and find your work/ life balance?

The location of this property only brings more beauty to this design and is taken into account in each aspect of the house. The dazzling stretch of water this property sits on and the luscious greenery which surrounds it helps to create the ideal Florida home.

I try to balance both my career & my personal life as best as I can. Being a wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister & daughter -- it’s not always easy getting pulled in many different directions. However, I consider myself truly blessed. I try to set some time aside for myself through my travels so I can get inspired and inspire, it’s also very rejuvenating.

Has this changed in recent years?

My business is growing and is constantly moving in a more demanding direction and although I have to constantly be present, I have mastered the art a work/play balance.

My work evolves with the trends, but I always maintain a timeless signature design.

What area(s) of the design sector do you work in for the most part?

High End Residential

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months and beyond?

I am working on designing my own furniture line!

For Colorado Coastal, extensive custom furniture and finishes were created to solve specific needs in each room. In the main living area, two custom sectionals mirror each other to fill the expansive space between the kitchen island, fireplace, and 2 walls of glass doors leading outside. This solved the problem of how to apply seating to a room with multiple focal and access points.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

Innovative design, integration of design & technology to the home, Biophilic design & health benefits, being true to my positive nature & only taking on clients with good energy.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

Andrea Schumacher Interiors also had to appropriately incorporate many pieces from the client’s existing art collection, used in their previous homes. This is the third house Andrea has completed for this client, and it was a challenge to repurpose existing collections into homes with diverging styles. A fresh take on a poker room was designed to show off the client’s collection of antique chairs and original pieces by Dr. Seuss.

Wall coverings, which I think transform a space. Good lighting & Technology.

The team created unique spaces to specifically meet the family’s vision for how the home would be used. Many of their needs and goals did not translate into common or current trends in luxury home design.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

When designing, try to stay timeless & bring in colors through pillows & art, as these are easily interchangeable. Also, always go with high-end appliances as they have a higher resale value.

The overall look of the home is fresh, inviting and luxurious with just the right blend of function, sophistication and personalised style.

How important are The International Design Awards?

Extremely important -- still hoping to win one!
