INKY THOUGHTS

It is incredible, how much putting together each issue makes me fall in love with coloring all over again. As the cards come rolling in, I open them with excitement to look at the detail of each image that is passionately colored by hand. Whether it is watercolor, Copic markers, Prismacolor pencils or any other medium that we feature, I’m always in awe at the depth and vividness of each card. I have to admit, I haven’t done much coloring myself since launching this magazine and I miss it as only another colorist could understand. After this issue goes to press and I’ve sent out all the emails to our awesome list of subscribers, I’m definitely going to set aside some time and do some coloring myself. For me, coloring is a stress reliever....it allows me to quiet my mind from anything that has been bothering me and just get lost in the moment of bringing a black and white line art image to life with color! I hope that this issue will continue to inspire you and you will continue to do what you love most - color! Most of us have gone back to school and we have an entire section of back to school projects (p.8) sure to get those creative juices flowing. As we look at our color watch this month, we’re highlighing TANGERINE (p. 16), a color that I’m loving more and more, and as we say FAREWELL (p.14) to summer take a look at cards in this little used category. We are super excited to welcome LAWN FAWN as our featured Hue’s Who company - Kelly Marie takes a moment out of her busy day of filling orders and creating fabulous videos to answer some fun questions we had for her that I think you will enjoy! ©Saturated Canary

I also am excited to introduce you to some of the girls that help me put together the magazine by creating cards for our Hue’s Who section or by managing the social media aspects of our Facebook and Blog. This awesome group is affectionately called, The Color Crew and they encourage and inspire me every day to keep knocking out bigger and better issues for all the colorists out there! I hope you will enjoy learning a bit about their journey to coloring as they each have their own special style that makes the pages of this magazine come to life along with all the designers published in each issue. Thank you again, as without your ideas and support, this magazine wouldn’t even exist! We are already busy working on our October/November issue and I think you will love the surprises we have in store for that. Happy coloring,

-Carisa Zglobicki

color watch - Tangerine Tango What is more fun than color? I sure can’t think of anything else! I for one love to color and to gawk and look at all the amazing shades and hues of different colors. Color is all around us and it truly makes every one of our projects pop! I cannot for the life of me choose a ‘favorite’ color. That’s like choosing a favorite child or a favorite Starbucks Frappuccino flavor. It’s just impossible! So it’s only natural that we here at Designed to Color embrace our love of all colors and feature one each issue to kick-start your next creation! The color we are drooling over at the moment is the Pantone.com Color of the Year, Tangerine Tango. Yummo! The subtle red and peach tone is just amazing. Just looking at it makes my heart fill with orangey goodness! Orange is a somewhat overlooked color. We are so concerned about pinks and blues and browns that we tend to shy away from orange. Orange is a universal color, it can be used in the most delicate ways for a girlish project and yet it can be manly. Using just any shade of orange in a project can make it pop with life! So go ahead, don’t be shy… try out tangerine tango and other shades of orange in your next project!

YOU ARE THE BEST by Lizzie Oakley www.ohsnaplizzie.com REEVES WATERCOLORS DESIGNER TIP: When using water colors, it’s best to play around with different papers. If you do choose to get a water color pad, do not cheap out. The lower the price on the paper, the more it will rip apart and not hold the water or color. But using medium weight cardstock can work just as well, as long as you color quickly!
