ELECTORAL DAYS OF ACTION
The Electoral Days of Action campaign spurred continuing DAP conversations on the role of designers and planners in civic activism and building political power, especially as a BIPOC community. Electoral Day of Action #1 & 2 focused on voter registration, grassroots voting rights organizations, and phone banking to amplify vote efforts in North Carolina and other swing states. A sharable voting guide was created and distributed by DAP members. Electoral Day of Action #3 deployed tactile protest signs on Election Day at New Orleans’ town hall to encourage voter engagement in protestbuilding. Slogans were created collectively in Miro and designed by DAP members. Simultaneously, a social media campaign took place on IG, posting one DAP member every hour along with the hashtag #DAPVotes and a voting fact or election updates.
DAP VOTES INSTAGRAM TAKEOVER
Everyone has something to teach and I always have something to learn
We literally have every tool we need in our midst and network already
INTERGENERATIONAL KNOWLDEGE BUILDING
The “shared experience” of racism is applicable to many, and design school has a deep history of othering
X
Burnout is real & community care is key to healing
It’s ok to communicate needs, boundaries even if they change.
Centering cultures of care
Reminding each other to take time for self care
X
“Move at the speed of trust”
Pause with purpose
Learning and practicing how to be in solidarity with all folks -working on liberation from all forms of oppression
X
We are so powerful together!!!
Finding like-minded people committed to similar goals/ abolition is empowering and refueling
The reach this organization has is amazing
Collective minds can do great things
Building networks of trust has given me more confidence to take risks and articulate my values more clearly to others.
Learned how connected designers can be toward a political mission
We are in this together for the long haul
We are not alone
COLLECTIVE POWER
I’ve learned a lot about myself. And my values and where I want to be and what I want to do. If it weren’t for that, I’m sure it would have taken my whole career to reach the point that I am at right now. Being around like-minded people matters. Being around like-minded people of color matters!
That there are other loud voices out there in the heartland + Midwest
X
Zoom calls can be fun
Community is possible online Co-created playlists are important! DAP Playlist gives me life
BUILDING COMMUNITY COMMONS
Sometimes a moment of laughter is needed
Gained a great deal of new lifelong comrades
Importance of routine, (virtual/ physical) Facetime
X
Taking time to make sense of collective values and goals.
“Design Justice is what love looks like in space”
Community representation in housing I keep asking for is not unreasonable
Seeing what has been done beforehand
I’m used to literal “boots on the ground” organizing, so it is incredible to be part of an effort that is largely internet-based
So used to HAVING to do things in other initiatives, its nice to finally feel joy through this work by WANTING to do it
“REVOLUTION IS A PROCESS NOT AN EVENT.”
How to facilitate/ organize
Trust is key The joy of organizing as a collective Enjoying the process over the product, its much more valuable (i.e. all the other comments that refer back to our “process”)
COLLECTIVE ORGANIZING
Design Justice is actionable!!! No excuses

REFLECTIONS
In December 2020, we welcomed our first Sages of Protest to share space, wisdom, and community. David Hilliard is a founding member, first Chief of Staff and leader (1969-70) of the Black Panther Party and one of the architects of radical activism that has set a foundation for efforts like DAP to manifest. As his work encourages us to SEIZE THE TIME, this conversation inspired and informed our collective organizing—from the design justice demands to our direct action, youth leadership, and planning/policy in the built environment.
