ABOUT ME H

i, my name is Dassy Halpern.

I

am an Illustrator and Graphic Designer. Growing up, I was never too far from a pencil - as my teachers will doubtlessly attest. Combining this with my love of computers made Graphic Design a natural career choice.

I

am proficient in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and my trusty Wacom tablet gives my work an extra edge.

Case Study:

T

he objective of this project was to create an advertising campaign for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Af ter researching the organisation thoroughly, I chose to focus on deforestation, a cause which the WWF champions extensively.

I

created the tagline 'Deforestation is a Death Sentence' and conceptualised it by depicting animals found in the wildlife being subjected to various forms of the death penalty. The aim was to present a stark image of the fate that awaits innocent animals at the hands of human beings bent on destroying wildlife through deforestation.

I

n order to appeal to a broad audience, I took care not to present too graphic or disturbing a picture. This also served to demonstrate that the fate of wildlife has not yet been sealed, and can be halted or even reversed with positive human intervention.

Cover design for a children's book, What do you See Under the Sea? by Chaya Fischman.

F

or this project, I designed a stationery set consisting of wrapping paper, a file, a notebook and a mousemat.

I

chose an analogous colour palette and relatively simple design to appeal to all ages and stages who desire to be sophisticated yet uncomplicated at the same time.

CORPORATE IDENTITY

T

his was a live project, and I was tasked with designing the logo, business card, letterhead and envelope for a fledgling marketing company, Geffen Resources. They wanted a modern and clean logo, yet one which alluded to flexibility, adaptibility and supportiveness. I depicted this by using a clean serif font, but using a vine-like curve to strike through the double letter Fs. This was also an interpretation of the company's name, 'Geffen' meaning 'vine'.

TYPOGRAPHY Version #1

Version #2

F

or this project, I designed 2 versions of a poster advertising an exhibition of the works of David Carson, known as the 'Godfather of Grunge'.

I

n keeping with Carson's own style of typography and design, my resulting poster is 'grungy' in both typography and the erratic design.

I

came up with original ways to depict various words – word art, if you like:

PACKAGING

T

hus project entailed designing the packaging for Grandma's Kitchen artisanal flours. My goal was to design something warm, homey and appealing to the type of people who not only bake their own bread but are comfortable enough in the kitchen to attempt baking with a variety of flours.

F

or the first version, I used warm colours and an easy-to-read, almost casual font. For the second version, I used a clean white backdrop wiith hand-drawn flowers and wheat, to instill a personal touch and combine old-world stye with modernity.

Version #2

I

designed a brochure for a travel company, Zicasso. I created a hand-drawn watercolour design to bring out the 'Handcraf ted' in their slogan, 'Handcraf ted Travel'. Additionally, the name Zicasso is reminiscent of Picasso.

BROCHURE

ere is a sample brochure that I created for Zicasso before settling on my final design, as above. I used several elements from this design in my final design, such as the icons.

BRANDING

created a brand identity for Spaghettini, an upmarket Italian restaurant. I coined the tagline 'Pasta of Distinction'. I wanted to give over an impression of sophistication combined wiith uniqueness, hence the simple yet elegant logo and the whimsical painted icons that make up the brand's accompanying design.
