Case Study of Design for SDGs Project
Focusing on design education program related to the SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) for Japanese highschool students, this research aims to develop a set of opensourcetools that can be used to visualize the design thinkingeducational processes used by students. To implement anew type of SDGs related design educational program thatpromotes solving the world's issues in environmental andsocial changes, educational tools to support students in designthinking processes are not available. In collaborationwith teachers, we conducted a workshop with four sessionsat Fukusho High School in Fukuoka City for Year 1 studentsunder the Global Management Program. We worked withteachers to understand the design thinking processes used inthe workshop and identify issues that students faced duringthe workshop. Through the findings, a set of visualizationtools can be developed and proposed to support the studentsin the design thinking processes in future workshops. Thevisualization tool will enable students to learn freely anddevelop a high awareness of social issues. Also, teacherscan use and adapt the tools to meet the needs of the educationalobjectives. Besides, as an open-source, the outputs ofthe research can easily be contributed back to society.
