A Four-Season Destination Apple Trails, Farms, Festivals, Dinning, History, Skiing, Wineries and More! Warwick is known for its Victorian charm, sense of community and sophisticated cultural rural setting. Located just 55 miles from New York City, it offers locals, weekenders and tourists a blend of commerce, culture and history! It is known as a four-season destination with something for everyone! (Warwick Valley includes Warwick, Florida, Greenwood Lake, Amity, Bellvale, Edenville, New Milford, Pine Island and neighboring Vernon township, NJ.) Nearby, Greenwood Lake accommodates all forms of water sports and known as a popular summer area. The 9-mile lake features Thomas P. Morahan Beach and sits on the NY/NJ border. A favorite scenic drive is Route 17A from Greenwood Lake to Warwick including a stop at Bellvale Creamery. Pine Island and Florida’s fertile black dirt produce 25 percent of the nation’s onion crop as well as organic vegetables and flower crops! This rich farmland formed 12,000 years ago by a glacial lake was cleared by hand in the 1800’s by Polish and German immigrants and is farmed today by many of their descendants. Destination farm-to-table hot spots are very popular for many day trippers from the metropolitan area. Fall, is time to reap the harvest and leaf peep and Warwick Valley has its share of farms, farm stands, wineries and places to slow down and enjoy life’s bounty! Warwick offers lush natural beauty that extends from the farms and mountains and streams and lakes. Penning’s Farm Market operates over 100 acres and offers pick-your-own pumpkins, homegrown fruits and vegetables, baked goods and the “Harvest Grill” with live musical entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. W. Rogowski Farm in Pine Island features produce, farm store, dining and other unique farm to table events throughout the year. They offer catering, private dining and are known for weekend breakfasts! There are dozens of farms and several farm markets to explore including the Warwick Valley Farmers Market named “one of the best in the country” open May – November on Sunday’s from 9am-2pm in the South Street Parking lot in Warwick. Other markets are also located in Florida and Pine Island. Shalimar Alpacas offers great memories and photo opportunities with the family. The farm features small alpacas and a fiber store with the most amazing soft scarves and sweaters. Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery, is one of four wineries that dot the Warwick Valley region. They are known for producing amazing “Go-To’ events throughout the year. The food at Pane Café is a real treat. You must try their artisan pizza and their fruit and cheese and cured meat starters. The winery is recognized nationally for both its award winning hard ciders and it’s recently added line of fruit brandies. They feature regular entertainment and events, tastings and more so it is best to check their website for updates. They are also the location of TASTE OF WARICK which is an annual event held this year on Tuesday, September 10th from 6-9pm. Fabulous chefs of the Warwick Valley region participate. 25 restaurants, wineries, live music and samples of some of the most popular dishes and tastings under the big tent! For more information and tickets to this event visit www.warwickcc.org

APPLEFEST celebrates their 25th Anniversary this year! The 1 day event with FREE Admission is Sunday, October 6th from 10am-5pm Rain or Shine in the Village. This is Orange County’s biggest festival and selected as one of the Top Ten Festivals in the “Top 100 Events in North America” by the American Bus Association attracting over 30,000 people each year! It features food and artisan vendors, games, rides and live music. For more info visit www.warwickapplefest.com SUGARLOAF ART & CRAFT VILLAGE FALL FESTIVAL is Columbus Day Weekend, October 8th, 9th & 10th from 10am – 6pm Rain or Shine. It’s a day of food, crafts, fun and music set in historic Sugarloaf where barns and buildings dating back to the 1700’s are home to artisans, boutique shops, dining and a world class performing arts center. www.sugarloafnewyork.com Today, you can experience a diverse mix of memorable dining from upscale elegant eateries and casual outdoor cafes to charming country-style restaurants. Many featuring local produce as well as award winning chefs. There is also diverse shopping and historical buildings all in town. Warwick is known as the B&B Capital of Orange County with sixteen B&B s! The history of Warwick holds a special place during the Revolutionary War. It was once the site of a Continental Army Encampment. The Hudson River Chain was forged at Sterling Iron Works. This is the chain that was placed across the Hudson River and prevented the British Navy from sailing up the Hudson. In 1783, George Washington traveled through Warwick stopping at Baird’s Tavern and spending the night in the home of John Hathorn. Warwick is situated along a freight rail line which, along with many other towns in Orange County, contributed to the growth of the area. 19th century writer and naturalist Henry William Herbert who wrote under the pen name Frank Forrester popularized the area with his 1845 book “The Warwick Woodlands.” Warwick was honored in 2012, as the first town in New York State to receive the designation as an Appalachian Trail Community. This was a result of the town wide effort to showcase its commitment to past and future efforts to promote and protect its 10 mile section of The Appalachian Trail. The Warwick Valley Apple Trail includes six orchards. Relax, enjoy and discover scenic orchards in beautiful crisp autumn! Hudson Valley foliage is world famous as is the bounty from local family farms. Delicious apples and local fruits, seasonal vegetables, pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, u-pick and fresh picked for you, baked goods and pies, cider, cider donuts, fruit spirits, wine, hard cider and more! For more info visit www.warwickvalleyappletrail.com Winter is a special time for skiing and snowboarding at 3 different resorts. Mount Peter in Warwick, Tuxedo Ridge at Sterling Forest and nearby Mountain Creek. Another favorite annual event, Home for the Holidays, kicks off before Thanksgiving on Sunday, November 24th December 22nd. Downtown Warwick shops celebrate the kick-off Novemer 24th with “open houses” refreshments, music, decorations, a strolling chorus and more! FREE Horse and Buggy Rides are also a “MUST-DO” in November and December! Written & Photos by Melissa Tyler

www.catskillmtrailroad.com The Catskill Mountain Railroad is a unique way to take in the beautiful sights of Ulster County NY. A historic railway system that runs along the beautiful Esopus Creek through Kingston and Mt. Tremper, the Catskill Mountain Railroad allows visitors to experience this part of the Hudson Valley region just like they did in the old days! 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the Catskill Mountain Railroad, which has been kept up & running through the efforts of volunteers, throughout its 30 year history. No matter the season, there is always something happening on the railroad. So if you’re interested in a little slice of local history, or would like a unique sightseeing trip through the beautiful Catskill Mountains, then purchase a ticket from the conductor and grab a seat! All aboard the Catskill Mountain railroad! The Catskill Mountain Railroad has served and connected our local communities for nearly 150 years. Though its passengers and cargo have changed over time, the Catskill Mountain Railroad rolls on! Originally constructed in1868, the Catskill Mountain Railroad became a vital means of shipping and transportation to this rapidly developing region! In addition to shipping Bluestone, dairy products, and other materials to New York City, the Catskill Mountain Railroad was also one of the first all-weather means of transportation for tourists to visit the Catskill Mountains. The railroad has played a large role in creating and nurturing the ongoing love affair between tourists from New York City and the Hudson Valley region that still exists to this day. As the shipping industry and means of personal transportation evolved and changed over time, so did the demand for the services of the Catskill Mountain Railroad, and its last shipment was made in 1976, after which it’s on/off switch was spiked shut, perhaps forever? Thankfully not! Due to the overwhelming support from communities located on and near the railroad and even a few celebrities of the time, Ulster County officially purchased 38 miles of the Kingston / Highmount portion of the rail in the late 1970’s. In 1983 the Catskill Mountain Rail was officially re-opened to carry both passengers and freight. It’s been

rolling along ever since, and 2013 marks the 30th Anniversary of the county owned & volunteer operated Catskill Mountain Railroad! If you’ve never seen the bright flashes of color that dot the Catskill Mountains on a crisp fall day, you are truly missing out. The Catskill Mountain region is legendary for its beauty during the autumn season, where the leaves on the trees change to bright reds, vibrant yellows, and fiery oranges. One of the best and most unique ways to view these amazing bursts of color is via the Catskill Mountain Railroad! During the height of “leaf peeping” season the Catskill Mountain Railroad offers Fall Foliage Specials with seasonal rates and schedules so tourists can make the most of this great season and plan their day trips! Riders can either sit down and relax in the comfortable vintage coaches like a trip back in time, or take in the fall foliage with panoramic views and the crisp fall air on one of the Catskill Mountain Railroad’s open cars! Forget sitting in a cramped automobile to see the leaves, feel the fresh open air and take in some of the best views in town on the Catskill Mountain Railroad! After the fall fades and winter sets in, the Catskill Mountain Railroad keeps rolling on! Like an Ulster County Polar Express, the Catskill Mountain Railroad is simply magical during the holiday season! The train cars are decorated with lights and ornaments like a Christmas tree on wheels, a beautiful sight to see! Not only that, but during the holiday season, Santa Clause himself visits each train car to chat with the children and riders along their journey. Riders who are fortunate enough to get a seat in the vintage, refurbished caboose (which are available first come first serve) can enjoy the warmth of the classic wood stove during their ride. Everyone else, bundle up! Just like the old days, the majority of the seating is in the open air passenger cars, so be sure to dress warmly. One of the coolest aspects of the Catskill Mountain Railroad is that it is kept running entirely by local volunteers, nearly 150 people strong - from conductors & mechanics, to railway workers. And volunteers are always welcome! Most recently after sustaining extensive damage following Hurricane Irene, the Catskill Mountain Railroad has relied on volunteers to help clear and rebuild its rails (an ongoing project that continues to this day). The Catskill Mountain Railroad has become a symbol of the area itself: able to change and evolve with the times while still remaining true to its roots.

Ingredients Basic Sweet Yeast Dough: 1 (1/4-oz.) pkg. active dry yeast (1 tbsp.) 1 teaspoon sugar 1/4 cup warm water (110°F, 45°C) 1/3 cup sugar 2 eggs, room temperature 1/3 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup dairy sour cream, room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 cups all-purpose or bread flour -----------------------------------Maple Topping: 1/2 cup Crown Maple Syrup 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 cup butter 1/4 teaspoon salt -----------------------------------Cinnamon-Nut Filling: 2/3 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup toasted finely chopped pecans

Preparation In a large bowl of electric mixer, dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in water. Let stand until foamy, 5 to 10 minutes. Add 1/3 cup sugar, eggs, butter, sour cream, vanilla, salt and 1 ½ to 2 cups flour. Beat at medium speed with electric mixer 2 minutes or, beat 200 vigorous strokes by hand. Stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Clean and grease bowl. Knead dough 4 to 6 minutes or until smooth. Dough will feel soft and buttery, but not sticky. Place dough in greased bowl, turning to coat all sides. Cover with a slightly damp towel. Let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, until doubled in bulk, about 1 ½ hours. Shape and bake as directed in specific recipes. Makes 2 loaves or 24 rolls. Prepare Basic Sweet Yeast Dough as directed through first rising. Punch down dough; knead 30 seconds. Cover and let stand 10 minutes. Butter an 18-inch length of waxed paper; set aside. Generaously grease a 13” x 19” baking pan. Prepare Maple Topping; pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle evenly with 1 cup chopped pecans; set aside. Prepare Cinnamon-Nut Filing; set aside. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a 24: x 12: rectangle. Spread with butter, leaving ½ inch not buttered on 1 long side. Sprinkle evenly with Cinnamon-Nut Filling. Beginning on buttered long side, roll up tightly, jelly-roll fashion. Pinch seam to seal. Cut roll into 24 eaqual slices. Arrange rolls cut-side down in prepared baking pan. Cover with buttered waxed paper. Let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand in pan 1 minute; invert baked rolls onto a platter or a wire rack set over waxed paper. Spoon any topping remaining in pan over rolls. Let stand 5 minutes. Serve warm. Separate rolls by gently pulling apart with 2 forks. Makes 24 rolls.

Hordes of haunted hobbyists call the Hudson Valley their home. The Valley is mesmerizing for people who dabble in the dark arts. Ghosties and goblins become part of their desire to recreate the nightmares they live and breath everyday. Local Artist Heather Gleason, owner of My Eclectic Mind: The Art of Heather Gleason, delights in spooking her fans. You may see her surrounded by collectors as she displays her spooky folk art and decorative painting creations at local Hudson Valley craft shows and festivals. You can’t miss her dark and delightful Gothic style of painting in signature hues of orange and black. Ghosts, witches, and skeletons come alive and dance through her haunting artwork. Art tells a haunting story, but there is nothing scarier than actually living it. Donna Parish-Bischoff is a local author who is not afraid to let the skeletons out of her closet. As a child, she had many disturbing experiences living in a haunted house in Yonkers, NY. These experiences have haunted her through her entire life, and she shares them as seen through the eyes of a little girl in her latest work —The Lee Avenue Haunting. Her real-life story is getting rave reviews on Amazon.com. The reason why some people have ghostly experiences more than others is unknown, however some people are just born with a sixth sense. Julia Draho, owner of Miss Fanny’s Victorian Party House in Wappingers Falls, NY has a unique talent. She communicates with the dead. She is working toward mastering the art of mediumship and helping others communicate with loved ones who are trying to get a message back home. You may have seen Ms. Drahos on SyFy’s Haunted Collector or My Ghost Story on Bio. Creating haunted Halloween art can be hereditary. The Corsino family clearly shares in scares. Dead-icated to haunting the Hudson Valley, Derek Corsino, a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America, has a flair for creating the macabre from butter and sugar. Derek’s mother and brother practice their craft as costume designer and set designer for Headless Horseman Hayrides in Ulster Park, NY. You may have seen Derek on Food Network’s Food Challenge where he created a ghost story masterpiece. Visit Corsino Cakes in Wappingers Falls and have a devilish dessert created from your darkest dreams. Take this tip. The pumpkin spice cake is to die for! Visit www.hudsonvalleyhalloweenmagazine.com to learn more about these local artists that bury themselves in Halloween art here in the Hudson Valley.
