DHS Police Officers Ryan Steinhause, Danny Cleary, Daniel Brazeal and Commander Ken Peary stand proudly aside two of the five new patrol cars currently being outfitted for service. The 2011 Ford Crown Victorias are expected to be put into active service by the end of the month. Five new officers were sworn in Sept. 4 and the new cars were purchased in August. Each patrol car cost $24,988.63 and

were acquired with municipal funds through the Wondries Fleet Group. “These cars are a major benefit and absolutely needed,” said DHS Police Chief Kate Singer, who was recently appointed to the position. “This expansion goes a long way toward our goal of providing an increased police presence in the community as we work to keep DHS safe and sound,” Singer added.

INDIO,CA- Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez (D-Coachella) expressed outrage and disappointment about the Border Patrol’s targeting of Mobile Home Park residents displaced by last week’s floods. Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicles were seen parked outside an emergency shelter set up at Desert Mirage High School, sweeping the area for unauthorized immigrants whose homes were flooded. More than 30 families, and approximately 50 children, are without housing due to the storm. “At a time like this, when people are hurting and trying to survive from this terrible storm, it doesn’t help when Border Patrol agents are targeting people when they are most vulnerable,” said Pérez. “I have alerted federal authorities to this heartless exercise of judgment by our federal agents. I will be monitoring this situation closely in the coming days.” Pérez placed a call to U.S. Representative Mary Bono Mack’s office, as well as spoke with Imperial County border enforcement officials. He observed the targeting of displaced residents while he was visiting the park to tour the flood damage. According to shelter operators, 96 residents sought refuge from the storm at the shelter yesterday, yet only 16 residents returned, likely due to the intimidating presence of Border Patrol Agents. Earlier, Pérez submitted a request to Governor Brown for a State of Emergency declaration to address the flood damage sustained by the eastern Coachella Valley communities of Mecca and Thermal.

The First Amendment... Freedom of Speech or Press To Inform, Entertain and Editor’s Educate Our Readers with Relevant Editorials opinion Freedom of the Press is a First Amendment right granted by the United States Constitution. This right allows the media, including this newspaper, to gather, publish, and distribute information and ideas without government restriction or censorship. The First Amendment says in part that, “Congress shall make no law…abridging the Freedom of Speech, or of the press.” The federal courts have struggled to determine whether the framers of the Constitution intended to differentiate press freedom from speech freedom. That intellectual and esoteric argument carries on to this day. In the meantime, I have concluded through my 28 years of experience in the media that the freedom of the press derives from the freedom of speech and is protected under the First Amendment. Under these laws, it is my purpose to layout a playing field for the free exchange of information under the Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Speech. I, as the Editor-in-Chief, will filter, disseminate and edit to the style of journalism endorsed by The Associated Press (AP). If you wish to conform to the AP style, then please buy a copy of The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law 2011 ($19.95). It will tell you all the specifics about the craft of media communications. This is my Bible. It is what I follow. So if you have a problem with what I say in the newspaper, I will always refer back to this book as my guideline and standard. I did not invent journalism, nor did I create the laws and guidelines that monitor the institution. I simply abide by these rules established long ago. Under the First Amendment, I have the right to express myself freely in public without fear of persecution by the government. So do you, and I’m giving you that forum. My editorials in the newspaper will not be like those found in the Wall Street Journal. Instead, they will be editorials based on the daily lives of residents in the Coachella Valley. I want and welcome responses in Letters to the Editor. I seek a partnership

By Jackie Devereaux with our Readers within the community and want to exercise these Freedoms of the Press, not in an attempt to overreach or influence but in an attempt to “Inform, Entertain and Educate our Readers.” Help me do that. The creation of the editorial section will be in the first person - the “I” voice, which will be my personal views. Let me state up front, for anyone still confused, that my editorials DO NOT reflect the views of the Desert Star Weekly’s ownership, management or staff, but are exclusively my own personal views. I realize that since the beginning of recorded human history “influence” has been created by the written word. Since the first cave drawings and ancient hieroglyphics, mankind has exerted his influence on one another in some form through the written word and images. I want the community to participate in this process by submitting news stories, photographs and announcements of upcoming events. No event is too big or too small. Send me your wedding announcements. Send me your Girl Scout cookie drive schedules. Send in your engagement announcements and the dreaded obituary notices about local folks in the community who have passed. I’ve lost family members, plenty of them, and know how important it is to express our grief. I’ll find room for all your news and photos. We are your local, community newspaper. We’re not the daily “big guys” and are not competing with them. Maybe they fear our new movement into the advertising base, but in reality, we are not their competitor. We are a small, weekly community newspaper eecking out a space in the Desert. To let everyone know, we are now distributing door to door in Desert Hot Springs and will soon expand our distribution to Cathedral City and Palm Desert. After that, we’re heading south with door to door delivery in single family homes. Gated communities and apartment complexes will not be available to our delivery system. Those folks will have to get our newspaper at the hundreds of locations throughout the Coachella Valley distributed by Jim Foxx. In addition to our new distribution routes, you will notice several subheads and page sections in the newspaper’s new format. We will be refining

and altering our paper over the next few months to reflect our new image more precisely. Perhaps the most important or controversial area of any newspaper is the converge of area politics. Like many things in life, politics is a two-way street. It has many sides of the story and that’s exactly how I intend to report it. There will be no more one-sided points of view. There will be no more unsubstantiated rumors about people in office or the business community. There will be no more trash published is this newspaper! I repeat, there will be no more trash published in this newspaper. My influence will be to report the other side of the story. Something that DHS has not enjoyed since the closing of the Desert Sentinel newspaper decades ago. There isn’t any one person influencing our coverage on any event or issue. Here’s what’s going happen. We strive to maintain objectivity and balance in our reporting while trying to clarify the issues and express the other side of the story. As an editor I’ve learned that there is ALWAYS another side of the story. Right or wrong, there is another side. My purpose is to make all the esoteric press and speech freedoms RELEVANT to you. How is all this academic philosophy relevant to our Desert living? I intend and strive to make sure the editorial content is relevant to everyday life. For example: a decision coming from the local school board about busing children to a school choice versus geographic restrictions or zip codes. This is an example of community relevancy, not what’s happening in Washington, D.C. I need to keep my focus on what’s local. Help me do that with your comments and Letters to the Editor.

The Star’s Desert Virginia Waring International Piano Competition I don’t know if anyone has bothered to count, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Coachella Valley is home to more nonprofit organizations than golf courses. There are local groups providing support for families and victims of all the major debilitating diseases as well as child-help groups and cultural enhancement organizations that support all the various forms of art. Regardless of their cause, the work of these organizations contributes to improving the quality of life for everyone in our Desert community. Many of these non-profit organizations were formed when dedicated individuals saw a need and

decided to do something about it. But there is one long-standing group whose existence is built on appreciation of the piano, WWII and, most important, love. It’s the culmination of a musical journey worthy of a Hollywood scriptwriter, and for more than the past 30 years it has played itself out in the Desert. The Virginia Waring International Piano Competition begun life known as The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition in recognition of Hodges, a concert pianist, piano teacher and Desert resident, whose goal was to provide performance opportunities to young pianists. Participants in the bi-annual competition perform in three categories: Junior (age 12 and under); Intermediate (13 through 17) and Seniors (age 18

Cutting Edge Haunted House, Harvest Moon Festival, Grand Canyon Skywalk & Toyota Tows Space Shuttle Endeavor? Cutting Edge Haunted House

You know the old adage: Everything’s bigger in Texas.” The people behind the 2012 Cutting Edge Haunted House are out to add further proof to support that statement.

Getting

away

By Sherman Fridman

Cutting Edge Haunted House is a Halloween attraction located in an old, converted meatpacking plant in Fort Worth’s appropriately-named Hell’s Half Acre, and this year, the fiendish minds occupying the haunted house are out to win back the Guiness World Record Title of “World’s Largest Haunted House.” Your journey through and around the haunted house is currently estimated at more than a mile filled with frightful dioramas, animatronics and special effects and scare tactics that literally overwhelm the senses with the producers of the Cutting Edge Haunted House promising that the undead will rule the night and chainsaw-wielding zombies will abound. If you can’t be in Fort Worth between now and Nov. 3, don’t despair; blood-thirsty ghosts and goblins will be happy to take your spirit, just don’t expect to get it back.

raucous. For more than 3,000 years, Chinese farmers have celebrated the end of the harvesting season by gathering with family and friends to gaze at the bright harvest moon and eat moon cakes; and, you don’t have to travel to china to join in the festivities. In homage to this time of year, Los Angeles’ Chinatown will host the 74th Annual Harvest Moon Festival on Saturday evening, Sept. 29. This free event offers visitors a chance to see exciting roaming cultural acts such as lion dancers and kung fu artists as they perform against the neon backdrop of Chinatown’s historical Central and West Plaza, which is located on the 900-block of North Broadway in Los Angeles. As the moon rises above the horizon - in between bites of complimentary moon cakes and samples of Chinese food cooked on an outdoor grill - attendees will get a chance to learn why this time of year is so special. But unlike the traditional Chinese custom of gazing at the moon with the naked eye, Moon Festival participants will get to view the harvest moon in greater detail, using commentary and state-of-the-art telescopes provided by Griffith Observatory. More information is available at (213) 680-0243.

company that conceived and contracted to manage the Skywalk for 25 years. The reasons behind the dispute are not particularly relevant - unless you are one of the thousands of visitors who came to the site, only to find that the Hualapai had not put in the agreed water, power and waste treatment plant in addition to a paved road and telephone service. Hopefully that’s all water down the drain now as the Hualapai were recently hit with a $28.6 award against them for breach of contract. If, as expected, a court confirms the award and turns it into a judgment, the agreed upon services will be provided; until then, the Skywalk remains open … just watch where you step.

Toyota Tows Space Shuttle Endeavor?

Readers of this column in the Aug. 23 issue of the Desert Star Weekly will recall a feature on transporting the space shuttle Endeavour from LAX to its permanent display spot 12 miles away at the California Science Center in Exposition Park on October 13. The article, which featured the details of the 12mile route, did not mention how Endeavour was to be propelled to its final resting spot. Now we know. The space shuttle will be towed over the final quartermile by a Toyota Tundra truck as part of an advertising program developed by a Los Angeles-based ad agency and Toyota. I’m not xenophobic, and I believe that all parts of this planet are interconnected, but a Toyota as the final tow vehicle about which a Toyota spokesman said, “There is no larger or more recognizable icon of the U.S. space program’s success than the shuttle ….” Of course this raises a few questions: Why just a quarter-mile? Didn’t the Tundra have the muscle for a longer journey? What about a GM, GMAC, Ford or Dodge truck? Did they get the opportunity to participate in this momentous tow? Where towing rights auctioned to the highest bidder? Yes, I know that foreign cars are made in the United States; however, the brand is still foreign and I would think it more appropriate that the shuttle be towed by an American branded vehicle. Agree, disagree; leave a comment on the Desert Star’s website edition of this column.

“Vincent Van Gogh” at Arthur Newman Theater in the Joslyn Center One Performance Only PALM DESERT, CA - Dolores BeckerTrost’s original drama “Vincent Van Gogh” will be staged for one performance only on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m., at The Arthur Newman Theater in The Joslyn Cove Community Center. This award-winning original drama on the life of the renowned Dutch painter is the result of a six or seven year labor of love for playwright Becker-Trost. Long an admirer of Van Gogh’s paintings—and an artist herself—she has done extensive research into his history, and her play, based on information recorded in his journals and letters to his brother Theo, reflects many facets of his life—his passion for art, his love of God, his quest for the love of a woman, his rejections and disappointments, his loss of faith in the God he so desperately wished to serve, and ultimately, the loss of his sanity and will to live. “I have always been touched by his sadness and his continual attempts to follow his preacher father into the clergy,” declares the playwright, who also directs the production. Geropsychiatry Center at Eisenhower Medical Center Complex Aging Issues PALM DESERT, CA - “The so-called golden years are often difficult for many people in their 80s or 90s who are living alone, whose families are far away, and whose spouse and close friends are deceased,” said Dr. Bassanelli of Eisenhower Medical Center. “They’re often socially isolated, their nutrition is frequently poor, and there’s likely been some decline in their memory and thinking. “It’s not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely and depressed. Who wouldn’t be in this situation?” he added. “And when you factor in the health issues that come with aging,

life can be very hard for many older adults.” Other common scenarios include seniors with a history of depression or bipolar disorder whose condition has worsened with age or perhaps whose medications are no longer effective. Or someone who isn’t feeling or acting “right” — the individual may be anxious, or family members are concerned that

they’re depressed or perhaps experiencing the early stages of dementia. For many, aging often presents a range of complex issues. To learn more about Eisenhower’s Center for Geropsychiatry for help in dealing with these issues and more, call 760-837-8767, 24 hours a day.

Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Announces Daryl Hall & John Oates Sept. 22 INDIO, CA -The number one selling duo in music history is bringing their show to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. On Saturday, Sept., 22 Daryl Hall and John Oates bring their “Do What You Want, Be What You Are Tour 2012” to Indio and prove why they have stood the test of time. Starting out as two devoted disciples of earlier soul greats, Daryl Hall & John Oates are soul survivors in their own right. They have become such musical influences on some of today’s popular artists that the September 2006 cover of Spin Magazine’s headline read: “Why Hall and Oates are the New Velvet Underground.” Their artistic fan base includes Rob Thomas, John Mayer, Brandon Flowers of the Killers, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and MTV’s newest hipsters Gym Class Heroes who dubbed their tour “Daryl Hall for President Tour 2007.” One of the most sampled artists today, their impact can be heard everywhere from boy band harmonies, to neo-soul to rap-rock fusion. Signed to Atlantic by Ahmet

Ertegan in the 1970’s, Daryl Hall & John Oates have sold more albums than any other duo in music history. Their 1973 debut album, Abandoned Luncheonette, produced by Arif Mardin, yielded the Top 10 single, “She’s Gone,” which also went to #1 on the R&B charts when it was covered by Taveras. The duo recorded one more album with Atlantic, War Babies, (produced by Todd Rundgren) before they were dropped and promptly signed to RCA. Their tenure at RCA would catapult the duo to international superstardom. From the mid-’70s to the mid-’80s, the duo would score six #1 singles, including “Rich Girl” (also #1 R&B), “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do) (also #1 R&B), “Maneater” and “Out of Touch” from their six consecutive multiplatinum albums—’76’s Bigger Than Both of Us, ’80’s Voices, ’81’s Private Eyes, ‘82’s H2O, ‘83’s Rock N Soul, Part I and ‘84’s Big Bam Boom. The era would also produce an additional 5 Top 10 singles, “Sara Smile,” “One on One,” “You Make My Dreams,” “Say It Isn’t

So” and “Method of Modern Love.” Daryl also wrote the H&O single “Everytime You Go Away,” which singer Paul Young scored a number-one hit with a cover of the song in 1985. That same year, Daryl and John, participated in the historic “We Are the World” session as well as closing the Live Aid show in Philadelphia. Most recently as a duo, Daryl Hall & John Oates released their first box set, Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall & John Oates. The box set marks the first comprehensive multi-CD, multilabel deluxe box set compilation ever assembled from their entire career’s work, four CDs containing 74 tracks (16 of them previously unreleased). With the 40th anniversary of their first album, Whole Oats, 2012 finds Daryl Hall and John Oates very much at the height of their powers making their own kind of soul, with a new generation of musicians recognizing not only their historic track record of success, but also their continuing influence and achievements.

Dear Friend Would you like to stop aging and regain (or keep) youthful energy? Would you like to spend two quality hours every week with a well-known, respected writer and publisher (The Los Angeles Free Press and other publications), who has earned millions of dollars in his long life and is willing to share with you some remarkable insights into achieving health, prosperity, longevity, happiness, spiritual wisdomand general well-being? Well, it’s possible to do all of these things and more starting this week. For the past five weeks I have been writing about the Five Tibetan Exercises/Rituals for stopping the aging process in my weekly column in the Desert Star Weekly newspaper. I am very pleased to announce that starting Thursday, Sept. 20, I will be teaching these remarkable Fountain of Youth exercises at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. I will also be teaching self-hypnotism for increasing your will power, a profound meditational system for increasing your wisdom as well as other tools for gaining personal freedom and loving relations. I have taken a vacation from teaching for a few months now and am eager to resume sharing with you my knowledge of practical techniques for increasing your ability to think, to concentrate, to overcome the many problems of life and to improve the world. I am calling this class The Total Success Club! Since I am not giving you much notice for this Thursday, Sept. 20 meeting, I want to let you know that I will also be giving a full introduction to the Tibetan Fountain of Youth exercises on Sept. 20. The Joshua Tree Retreat Center is locatedat 59700 Twenty Nine Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, California, one long block from Yucca Valley. The class will start at 7 p.m. sharp and end before 9 p.m. in the Meditation Bullding. There will be information on the large bulletin board at the main entrance directing you to the Meditation Building. A donation of $5 is desirable but not necessary. (If you are poor, I want to help you get rich!) Have fun this week. Your friend, Art Kunkin

Rocky’s New York Pizza & Italian Restaurant “Mama Mia, the meatballs!” Desert Hot Springs, CA – Rocky’s New York Pizza & Italian Restaurant offers the best pizza, lasagna and meatballs in this small, windy, desert town located about 10 miles north of Palm Springs. mushrooms, onions, olives, bell pepper and extra cheese for $19.50. Better have someone to share this with because I’ll bet most people cannot consume a whole one alone. My husband, Tom, and I have a ritual of ordering their three-topping extra large Pizza ($15.65) for weekend football, baseball and basketball games. We usually order a sausage, mushroom and onion pizza, but trust me, all their toppings are terrific. Tom, and I decided to dine inside Rocky’s last week, a rare occasion since we usually order Take-Out or Delivery. First, we split one of their Antipasto Salads ($7.95) made with assorted Italian cold cuts, salamis, peppercinis, olives, tomatoes, on a bed of lettuce with homemade Italian dressing. It was large enough to share and still have some left over to enjoy for lunch the next day.

Rocky’s is an informal place where you order at the counter and seat yourself with a number card posted on your table. Tom ordered their signature Lasagna with Italian Sausage ($9.70) while I ordered their Chicken Parmesan entree with Spaghetti ($9.95). We had to order a side of their delicious Homemade Meatballs ($5.20), knowing full well that it was too much food but we took our leftovers home for lunch the next day. Don’t forget to try any one of the famous Grinders & Subs at $5.75 for small size or $7.05 for large size sub. Choose from Rocky’s Super Sub made with ham, salami, and roast beef sure to satisfy any meat lover. All subs come with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and topped with Rocky’s Italian Dressing. Achievements Can Be Like Olympic Gold Medals Definition of achievement: Something accomplished, especially by superior ability, special effort or great courage. Achievements are how we gauge personal growth in life. If you are a parent watching your baby take its first step and later saying its first word, that is an achievement for your child. If you are a scientist, finding a new medicine for high blood pressure that has no side effects is an achievement. For business owners, hanging the first dollar on the wall from your first sale is definitely an achievement. Desert Hot Springs construction company owner, Juan Trejo, certainly has his share of achievements. Trejo Construction, (California Contractor License number B-920503), is the culmination of a lifelong dream for the Trejo family. Getting to where he is today was no easy task. Born in 1970 in Mexicali, Mexico, Trejo had a dream of coming to America. He knew though that a

dream without a plan was just empty hope. So when he was only 17 years old, Trejo started taking classes at Tecnologico de Mexicali. He worked nights and weekends for four years to put himself through school to learn skill sets he thought would be useful trades. But Juan did something else to prepare himself for his planned future in the United States. He started taking classes in English. As a businessman with 20 years experience in the tourism industry, I get to meet people from all over the world and from all walks of life. A couple of years ago, I met a Rabbi who told me there is no word in the Hebrew language for “coincidence.” Nothing in life is by chance. Jesus never said the word “lucky.” Trejo believes that also. And just as God planned, Trejo met his future wife, Jackie, in English school in Mexicali. In 1991, he graduated from Tecnologico with electrical engineering and air conditioning degrees. After getting

married, the couple obtained their visas and moved to America in 1992. Trejo was able to get a job as a contractor apprentice with the professional training he learned in Mexico. On By Frances Allen a contracting job in the 1990’s, he met and was befriended by Arthur By Reno Fontana Mogull, a United Artists Records executive. Six Degrees of Separation - Losing Money Pales To Losing a Child By Reno Fontana I’ve lost money in the stock market. Didn’t like it a bit. A lot of folks lost money in the stock market. But I’m thankful still for my many blessings including a fine young son. I circle the calendar every year on May 20. That’s my birthday. I met a man this week who also circles May 20, but not for the same reason. For Palm Springs resident Lee Eakin, it’s not a day he celebrates, instead, it’s a day he reflects on his only child’s life, Nathan, who at 29, was killed in a tragic auto accident on East Palm Canyon on that date in 2008. It’s been said that every person on the planet is connected by only six degrees of separation. All of us, as complete strangers, can tie our lives to one another within six moves. I don’t know if that is a scientific fact or not, but in the case of Eakin and myself, it has proved true. As the owner of a celebrity home that has become an international tourist attraction, I meet people daily from around the world and from all walks of life. It’s rare that any individual stands out among the thousands of good folks I have met, but one young fellow did just that in early 2008 when he took a tour of Elvis’ Palm Springs Chino Canyon estate.

Nathan Eakin, who introduced himself to me as Nate, was a handsome, witty, confident and charming lad. Nate had become a bail bondsman in the family business at eighteen and a successful realtor in his own right while still in his mid twenties. The world was at his feet just waiting to be conquered on his terms. Sometimes though, life doesn’t arrange itself to fit our plans. For reasons never discovered and which will be unknown to his father and family forever, Nathan, the cautious and always conscientious driver when behind the wheel of a car, was alone when he was killed in a violent crash. He slammed into a tree rounding a curve at an estimated 110 mph in a 45 mph zone on a Palm Springs street. No evidence of alcohol or substance abuse was found. It is speculated that a mechanical malfunction may have caused the car to accelerate or Nate may have suffered a medical emergency leaving him incapacitated causing the car to reach a speed that proved fatal. The investigation showed Nathan never touched the brakes. He died instantly, leaving behind a grieving father and a family shattered by the loss of a 29 year old loved one who had

so much life left to live. As Nate’s father would tell me for this story, early comfort came to him in the form of an e-mail from Steven Curtis Chapman, the Grammy award-winning Christian music singer. Chapman’s five year old daughter, Maria Sue, was accidentally run over and killed at the Chapman home in Franklin, Tennessee by a family member. The tragedy for Chapman and his family happened on May 22, 2008, two days after he lost his son. Chapman read in the news about the horrific end of Nathan’s life after suffering his own heart wrenching loss. Chapman reached out and told Eakin in correspondence that he wanted to extend his condolences. He also left him with this message; “God came to the boulevard and picked Nathan up and carried him home to Heaven. And God was weeping”. People everywhere can find comfort in Chapman’s message to Lee. God is with us always especially in our darkest hour and time of need. If anything in life is predictable, it’s that life is unpredictable. Eakin knows this all to well. Every year on May 20, two circles by two different people are drawn around that date. For

me, it marks the beginning of life. For Eakin, it’s remembering the end of life. But here’s the most incredible part of Lee’s story. Even though he wishes of course he never had to circle May 20 on his calendar, he has managed in just four short years to find life’s positives after the devastating loss of his son. If there was a glass half full award, Eakin would take top honors. And I myself will never again complain about losing money in stocks. Next week, you will read how Eakin has bounced back from the death of his child and made some life changing business decisions to help others in honor of Nathan. If there is someone in your family, or someone you’ve dealt with in business, and there are personal matters that need fixing, today would be the perfect time to make wrong things right. Extending forgiveness and asking for forgiveness, sharing love when it’s not deserved or receiving love when we don’t feel like we deserve it, will make a positive impact on everyone’s spirit more than money could ever possibly do. “Finding Nemo” Is BackNow Sea It In 3-D

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman In 2003 “Finding Nemo” won the Academy Award for Best animated feature and in 2008 the American Film Institute (AFI) named “Finding Nemo” among the top 10 greatest animated films ever made. At the time of its release the film was the highest grossing G-rated movie of all time and remains the fifth highest grossing animated film worldwide. Now this colorful fish tale is back in 3-D for a whole new generation to ‘sea’ and enjoy. “Finding Nemo” is a heartwarming story that deals with a father - son relationship between two clown fish, Marlin (Albert Brooks) and his son Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould) as well as the friendship that develops between Marlin and Dory, a blue tang fish who joins Marlin in his quest to rescue his son. Dory is adorable but oh so forgetful. Marlin is overly protective and at one point little Nemo gets so upset by his father’s loving, stifling presence he swims out into the deep and is captured by an Australian diver who takes the colorful little fish home with him and places

him in the aquarium in his dental office. Horrified, Marlin swims off to rescue his son and in the process he meets all sorts of creatures of the sea, including Dory (voiced by Ellen Degeneres). For adults, much of the fun in seeing “Finding Nemo” is figuring out who’s who in the talented voice cast. Some voices may come as a surprise like the voice for Bruce, the great white shark who wants to stop eating fish and has formed a support group for fish eating addicts. Barry Humphries (aka Dame Edna Everage) is the voice for this intimidating denizen of the deep. Geoffrey Rush (“The King’s Speech”) is the gossipy Australian pelican, Nigel and the fish in the dentist’s aquarium who look after little Nemo include Gill (Willem Dafoe), Bloat, a blowfish voiced by Brad Garret (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) and Peach a motherly starfish (Allison Janney). And the Surfer Dude sea turtle, Crush is voiced by none other than the writer/director Andrew Stanton. This colorful tale of life under the sea evolved from several personal situations in Andrew Stanton’s life. One being a visit to Marine World in 1992 which got him thinking about the amazing possibilities of creating an undersea world in computer animation. Another part of the story puzzle came from childhood memories of the aquarium in his family dentist’s office, where as a kid he wondered what the fish felt. Did they miss their home in

the ocean? Would they try to escape and go back to the sea? The final piece in the eventual story was his relationship with his son.

Screen

He recalled a visit to the park when the boy was five and as they walked he kept thinking how much he missed spending more time with the little boy, but he also kept telling him “Don’t touch that, don’t do this, you’re going to fall.” Another voice inside his head said “You are wasting this special time with your son right now.” He felt his fears for his son were keeping him from being the good father he wanted to be and he says “that revelation helped me Best Quality! put all the pieces of the story of Nemo into place.” He then pitched his story idea to his mentor at Pixar, John Lasseter, preparing all sorts of visual aids to show how colorful and wonderful the story could be. When he finished he asked Lasseter what he thought. His reply was “You had me at fish.” Disney.Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” is rated G.

Although Lee has long since left the band, his mammoth talents as singer, songwriter and – most notably – lead guitarist are showcased on his new solo album “Still on the Road to Freedom.”On the newly-released disc, a conceptual sequel to Lee’s grand 1973 album “On the Road to Freedom,” the artist explores a variety of styles including psychedelic blues (“Midnight Creeper”), traditional blues (“Save My Stuff”), rockabilly (“I’m a Lucky Man”) and gorgeous instrumental guitar work (“Song ofthe Red Rock Mountain”). Diesel Finally...2013 Porsche Cayenne By Lizett Bond Porsche’s roots in Southern California car culture run deep, stemming from the races in the 1950’s held on temporary airport circuits to events such as the Palm Springs Road Races first held in April 1950 to the Palm Springs Vintage Grand Prix. What few expected was the Cayenne. When Porsche entered the SUV market in 2004, they named their model after a pepper. The Cayenne pepper, also known as the Guinea spice, bird pepper or aleva, is red hot - certainly not a word one would associate with an SUV. But teamed up with the infusion of Porsche genes and true sports car flavor, the designation gains traction. The result is one of the best vehicles with off road capabilities on the market.

with a host of automotive demands will find the Cayenne amenable to the driving lifestyle that follows, with plenty of room in the back to accommodate soccer gear, the family dog, or a week’s supply of groceries. Visibility is a crucial consideration and this car gives good vision. Finally, the stitched leather seats are comfortable, providing just the right amount of support, a key feature at the end of a busy driving day. For the commuter, the 3.0-liter turbo V-6 engine is much less painful on the wallet with a range of over 700 miles and exceptional fuel mileage of 20 city/ 29 highway. And when it does come time to belly up to the fuel pump, the Cayenne’s tank has a safeguard in the filler neck fitting only the diesel nozzle. Gone are the days of accidentally putting gasoline in the diesel tank.

Flash forward to 2013 and Porsche has turned up the heat again with the launch of the new generation of Cayenne, the diesel SUV. While there is still the stigma that the diesel is not a performance engine, one merely has to witness the rapid development of the motor, which is both quiet and efficient, and the fact that diesel power continues to triumph on the race circuits of the world, including the 24 of Le Mans. And just as Porsche brushed aside the outrage of sports car purists when the Cayenne came on the scene in 2004, saying, “wait until you drive it”, the same holds true with this new entry. The V6 Turbo Diesel drive train may be the perfect engine for the Cayenne, it drives like a Porsche and with the familiar diesel clatter virtually inaudible from the inside, adding to the feeling of power and strength, a day at the wheel leaves some overwhelming impressions. First of all, this car can multi-task with the best and possesses the ability to meet most driving requirements. Busy families September 20 - 26, 2012

Chances are anyone with a Porsche on their wish list, even an SUV, is a sports car aficionado and while the Cayenne may seat five people comfortably, it is still designed by the same company that created the 911 Turbo and the turbocharger has the same variable vane geometry. The 8 speed Tiptronic S transmission is smooth and the engine reaches 60 mph in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 135 mph. A sloping center console has Porsche sports car written all over it. The power comes out to 240 at 3,5004,000 rpm with generous torque, 405 lb-ft at 1750-2500 rpm. Folks with trailers, take note, that’s some serious towing muscle and Porsche’s Traction Management system features permanent all-wheel drive. For the consumer attempting to bundle together diverse yet coveted elements into one vehicle, the Cayenne is one spicy combination. The price of the Cayenne Diesel starts at $55,750 plus a destination fee of $975.

STARAutomotive 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe - the sweet spot in the BMW range As if improving upon the 6 Series was even possible, BMW has changed the game with the addition of the four-door Gran Coupe – which bridges the gap between the large 7 Series and smaller 5 Series sedans. The low roofline and sleek styling earn its coupe designation, a name typically reserved for two-door cars. The new Gran Coupe is offered in three models. The TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder BMW 640i Gran Coupe is the initial model, with an MSRP of $76,895. The TwinPower Turbo V-8 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel drive BMW 650i xDrive Gran

ambience for all those on board. The central section of the instrument panel is angled slightly towards the driver and the gear selector for the automatic gearbox, the Driving Experience Control switch and the activation button for the parking brake are all positioned on the surface of the center console which opens out towards the driver. The standard Navigation System Professional and iDrive operating system come with 10.2-inch high definition display bordered by a galvanized chrome surround. The interior is bristling with technology, including the coolest heads-up display

Coupe are priced at $87,395 and $90,395 respectively. Not exactly entry-level pricing, but the GranCoupe flirts with supercar status and can easily run in the pack with Maserati and Bentley. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is in

I’ve ever seen. This system projects key information onto the windshield in front of the driver like all HUD systems, but it also projects the full navigation instructions from the navigation system, keeping your eyes on the road. Long horizontal lines extending all the way through the interior create a visual link with the second row of seats, showcasing the size of the interior. The elegant lines of the door trim, familiar from the other BMW 6 Series models, continue into the rear compartment, For this test, I opted to drive the M Sport package, developed specially for the Gran Coupe. It adds a number of M-exclusive features, including an aerodynamics package, exhaust tips in black chrome, blackpainted brake calipers, a sports exhaust system for 19-inch light-alloy wheels and other nice touches. In all, the new BMW 6 Series GranCoupe is big step up from the 5 Series upon which the car is built. The 6 Series in general is the sweet spot in the whole BMW range, making the 5 series look a bit awkward and the 7 Series too big. Of the whole test, I found a few things a bit annoying, like the overlycomplex gear-shifting, and some controls (like for iDrive) too small. The main rival of the GranCoupe is the Mercedes-Benz CLS, but the similarities end with styling, as the GranCoupe outperforms the CLS in most categories. keeping with the tradition of the 6 Series Coupe, providing a combination of sporting driving dynamics, stunning design, luxurious touring comfort and now seating for four passengers. It delivers the BMW signature driving experience, which it compliments nicely by a range of driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive infotainment features. The new car meets my highest expectations of driving pleasure, all in a package that is drop-dead gorgeous. The beauty lies on the outside and the interior, but the beast is under the hood. The powerful engine and eight-speed automatic transmission are an amazing combination of power and control that kept a grin on my face with every mash of the throttle. The new BMW 650i Gran Coupe completes the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. The interior of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe reveals the driver-focused cockpit design typical of the brand and a luxurious

Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade Sunday, Oct. 28 “AMERICAN PRIDE” Theme PALM DESERT, CA – Experience the color, pageantry and fun as scores of whimsically decorated golf carts and bands march down Palm Desert’s famous shop-’til-you-drop El Paseo, in the first major event of the season. The “American Pride” theme will have the street filled with red, white and blue, stars and stipes and a great patriotic feeling going into election time. Start your float or cart decorating now to enter the parade. The idea for a golf cart parade started with Phil Harris, Alice Faye and some other celebrities with vacation homes here who wanted something fun to do. Palm Desert is known as the “golf capital of the world,” so how about something with golf carts?: they said. The World Famous Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade originated in the early 1960s, put together by these and several other individuals who just wanted to have fun. Production was “iffy” depending upon whether a chairman could be found for that year or not. The parade wasn’t an every year event until 1983. In the early days, it was “Christmas in July” for the benefit of local residents who found the summers boring. The Fire Cliff Lodge served up turkey dinners and the carts were all decorated for Christmas. Today, the parade is in October with over 15,000 spectators. Organizers field questions about the parade from media around the world. Recent requests for information have come from the Philippines, France, Germany and Japan. Some of the asked questions are: Is this just a bunch of golf carts driving down the street? No, it’s much more. Think of a mini Rose Parade where the carts are decorated with tissue paper instead of roses. Then add bands, clowns and other marching groups. Is there something for kids to do? “We have clowns, face painting, crafts, a

rock climbing wall and more. Best of all, it’s free. The Children’s Area is located on Larkspur, south of El Paseo, along with The Red Cross First Aid Station and Lost and Found. “The parade is fun and enjoyment for all ages, especially with the early morning pancake breakfast, the special Cart Show and the Senior Seating Area. The breakfast is in the Bank of America parking lot at San Luis Rey and El Paseo. Check out the day’s schedule and the Children’s Activities. Can anyone with a golf cart participate? Yes and no. Only electric powered carts are allowed and they must be decorated. There is a nominal entry fee. Check out the details on the entry form. The route is 3/4 of a mile from San Luis Rey to Ocotillo. Decorated carts can be no larger than 14feet high, 16feet wide and 30 feet long. Entries include cheerleading squads, dance groups, cycling clubs, even fencing clubs can participate. But every entry needs to have a decorated cart as part of their entry unit. Full marching bands are the only entries that do not need accompanying carts. There is an entry fee charged to offset the cost of putting on a full day of activities. See the entry form for details. Trophies and awards are presented at 12:30 pm at the corner of San Luis Ray and El Paseo. The parade steps off at 1 p.m, every fourth Sunday in October, but check out the entire day’s schedule. The Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce and City of Palm Desert work side by side to handle the dayto-day administration, overall parade management including coordination of logostics and safety. A committee of more than 20 volunteers are instrumental in making the parade a reality. Ample parking is available for parade spectators. September 20 - 26, 2012

Vitality, The Movie by Ren Yogamaya, E- RYT 500 The North American premiere of the new film, Vitality happened on Sept. 1, and was held at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, CA. It was a fun event with an early reception that offered complimentary massages, holistic treatments, organic treats, with live musical performances by Chris Amedeo and The Modern Minds and also award winning, British singer, Julian Forham . The film is a journey into the nature of what true health is and how we can attain it individually. The problems of the broken medical system revolve around trying to constantly fix problems that emerge from how we live. Vitality, the movie, proposes how we can make the necessary changes. Medical experts from around the world weighed in as they explored the simple solutions that can drastically change our relationships with our bodies. Vitality is more than merely the absence of disease, it means being able to live Life fully and thrive in the world today. “I am so excited to be a part of this September 20 - 26, 2012

ground-breaking and most inspiring film: It’s the future of health and medicine, now. It is time of opening to the importance of taking care of our complete health, including our spiritual health,” said Hyla Cass, MD. She appears in the film and believes in natural remedies. “Believe, and you can do it,” said Cass. Just under one hour, the film’s debut was well attended with the theatre’s 370 seats soldout. A percentage of the proceeds of the ticket price goes to Waves for Water, a non-profit organization with a mission statement that is simple: To get clean water to every single person who needs it. (To date, the organization has given water to over 10, million people). The Vitality film was followed by a panel discussion

with twelve members of the film’s expert, “luminaries” that include: Dr. Bruce Litpon, Dr. Hyla Cass, Dr. Albert Villoldo, fitness guru, Mari Windsor, Dr. Tom Brown, and Waves for Water activist, John Rose. Some of the topic of discussion covered by the panel included the important topics in the film: “How To Get Food, Without the Plastic,” “Go Organic,” “Support Your Local Farmers,” “Stretching–A Must Do,” “Self-Knowledge, Self-Change,” “It’s Not About Ignorance, It’s About Education,” “It is About Persistence, Mind-Set” “Learn How the Body Works”, “Core and Posture” and “Energy Through The Body”. “The film is about personal power” – said writer-director-producer and owner

of Well.Org., Pedram Shojai. “The film was created for several reasons. As a doctor, it is a conversation you want to have, something to tell and share with patients. So, on behalf of all good doctors who wish to share this information, it is now here. It is also a great educational tool. In our western world the film has a broad appeal to help people make modifications (in their health) from what we learned in the 50’s.” Also interestingly noted is that Dr. Shojai, is originally Persian, a Muslin who grew up seeing a lot of misery. He became a student of chi-gong and studied other practices such as the Kabbalah, the work of the Dalai Lama and worked to bridge the gap with Eastern and Western medicine. Everyone can benefit from this film. Vitality is a film that gives you more than just information on the betterment of health. Using colorful and clear graphics, interviews, and easy listening music helped to make Vitality flow very well, an enjoyable experience. The films’ future depends on the forthcoming distribution and the DVD downloads that will make it accessible to the public.

Oktoberfest Comes to Palm Springs Oct. 13 Palm Springs, CA , -As a European-style festival showcasing more than 40 food, beer and wine tasting booths, Oktoberfest Palm Springs will be a unique event in the heart of downtown. The event will be held on Oct. 13 from Noon-6 p.m., and benefits CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and Les Dames d’Escoffier (Providing scholarships for female chefs). Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a 501 © 3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to speak for the best interests of abused, neglected and abandoned children in the courts of Riverside County. We promote and support quality volunteer representation for each child to secure a safe, permanent and nurturing home. We are diligent advocates for the services needed to help each child become a healthy and productive adult, able to

break the chain of abuse, neglect or abandonment. CASA volunteers provide advocacy for children in the foster care system. CASAs visit their assigned child frequently, submit written reports for all the child’s hearings, and attend court with the child. CASAs ensure that the child’s essential needs are met, that all court orders are carried out and that any violations of the court’s orders are brought to the attention of the court. For more information on becoming a CASA volunteer or to make a donation, please visit our website at www.casariversidecounty.org Les Dames d’Escoffier is the only organization of its kind: a world wide philanthropic society of professional women leaders in the fields of food, fine beverage and hospitality. They award scholarships to female students in both the hospitality and food science industries. The

invitation-only membership, composed of 28 individual chapters across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom is highly diversified and reflects the multi-faceted fields of contemporary gastronomy and hospitality. heavy travel schedule this summer, they have requested we extend the deadline so they can apply,” Donaldson said Celebrating their 27th anniversary, the Southwest Arts Festival® will once again be at the world-renowned Empire Polo Club in Indio, a Coachella Valley landmark, featuring the desert’s natural landscape and sweeping mountain ranges. Featuring more than 250 acclaimed artists showing traditional, contemporary and abstract fine works of art and quality crafts, the Festival is a major internationally recognized cultural event. “The quality of the art we have

been receiving this year with the artist’s applications is very exciting,” notes Shawnna Trombetta, assistant manager of the Southwest Arts Festival®. “It seems like the best of the best are applying to our show,” she said. The Festival’s reputation for firstclass quality and professional integrity make it one of the finest in the country. As the Indio Chamber’s largest annual fundraiser, they are exceptionally fortunate to have over 200 community leaders and volunteers who contribute numerous hours to make certain that the Festival is successful. All artists, regardless of weather,

must be present every day of the Festival. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Spaces (12’ x 12’) are $250 each. Up to four spaces may be purchased. Applications fees: $55. COD and Barstow Community College Teamed Up to Train Solar Workforce at Ivanpah 42 Trainees completed a two-day training course PALM DESERT, CA—College of the Desert’s Advanced Transportation Technology & Energy Center (ATTE) and Barstow Community College have partnered on the training of workers for the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System. The project’s owners- NRG Energy, Google and Brightsource conducted a two-day workshop to introduce workers with backgrounds in general power plant operations to the specifics of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) thermal tower technology. The workshop covered solar thermal principles, CSP tower systems- and plant operation issues. The training was conducted at the plant site with 45 to 50 workers in attendance. James Pacheco of Sandia National Laboratories, one of Department of Energy’s experts in central tower technology, served as trainer. The workshop was held at the Ivanpah project site which is 10 miles northwest of Nipton, CA. The CSP tower training included a plant

overview of several areas including: the basic theory of operation, basic construction and design, major system operations, interconnected systems, startup and shutdown, response to weather changes, water chemistry and plant performance measurements. College of the Desert’s ATTE has continued to develop and refine its utilityscale solar energy program and provide assistance to other colleges in the region as a result of the capacity established with funding from California Energy Commission, Chancellor’s Office Advanced Transportation Technology & Energy Initiative, and Employment Development Department. For information contact, Larry McLaughlin, COD’s Director Advanced Transportation Technology and Energy Center, at (760) 773-2595.
