Mecca Firm to Launch Advanced Solar Energy System

MECCA, CA - Supervisor John J. Benoit spoke at the ribbon cutting to launch a new, advanced solar energy system at Richard Bagdasarian, Inc., a 60-year-old agricultural firm in Mecca that grows, ships and markets grapes, citrus and vegetables on Wednesday, Dec. 19 Benoit lauded the advanced 300kW photovoltaic solar energy system at the Richard Bagdasarian, Inc. Packinghouse located at 65-500 Lincoln Street. The 300kW photovoltaic solar energy system will generate electricity for the Bagdasarian plant with no air emissions, no waste production and

no water use. The project utilizes dual axis tracking technology to harness the area’s vast solar resources more efficiently than traditional fixed solar plates. The new, environmentally-friendly system will displace 540 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, the equivalent of taking 112 cars burning 60,272 gallons of gas off the road in one year or the annual consumption of electricity for 80 homes. Benoit represents the Fourth District on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. Stretching from the Palm Springs area south to the Salton Sea and east to the Colorado River, it is the largest geographical district in the county.

DHS POA Toy Drive The Desert Hot Springs Police Officers’ Association held its annual Holiday Toy Drive on Saturday, Dec. 22 and the Boys & Girls Club. “The economy continues to hit people hard, times are tough and we were pleased we had the opportunity to help families in need from our community. Toys were handed out by members of our association and families were provided a turkey dinner with a few side dishes. It was great to see the smiles on everyone’s faces; it made this

event very fulfilling and helps forge the continued relationship with the residents we service every day,” said DHS Police Commander Ken Peary. “We wanted to thank the Boys & Girls Club in Desert Hot Springs for providing the location for the event and for selecting the families in need from our city. We also wanted to thank all those who donated and contributed to the event including the Boys & Girls Club, the Edward Wenzlaff PTA, Vons in Desert Hot Springs, Stater Bros., the Alvarez family from Citizens on Patrol, and all those who I didn’t mention or wanted to remain anonymous. With their support and donations it made our event extremely successful,” Peary said. Gun Control: Where Do We Draw The Line?

The National Rifle Association’s (NRA) response to the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting is totally inappropriate. NRA President Wayne LaPierre said that we should put armed guards in schools. The NRA doesn’t get it. Their members are out of touch with reality and live in a fantasy world where they believe assault weapons are used only for sport and target practice. The NRA took this horrific incident of mass murder as an opportunity to sell more guns, and to promote putting guns in schools. Because of 9/11, we now have armed guards on airplanes. We’ve had four school shootings in 2012. What’s next? Shall we put guns in churches, shopping malls, sporting events or anywhere that people and children congregate? Shall we have armed guards at the local Boys and Girls Clubs? Where do we draw the line? In my opinion, the head of the NRA made an ass out of himself. His answer to the Newtown school shooting where 20 children and six adults were gunned down is to put more guns in schools. That’s

simply insane, but LaPierre defended himself on Sunday morning’s television show, “Meet the Press” saying, “If it’s crazy to call for putting police in and securing our schools to protect our children, then call me crazy.” LaPierre’s model for school safety is a program “… like they have an Israel…they put armed security in every school and they haven’t had a problem [since],” he said. It’s estimated there are more than 100 million Russian made AK-47 assault rifles available courtesy of the Mikhail Kalashnikov family. The assault rifle was first developed in the mid-1940s, and after six decades the model and its variants remain the most widely used and popular assault rifles in the world because of their durability, low production cost and ease of use. Adam Lanza, the alleged 20-year-old gunman suffering from mental illness used a .223 caliber Bushmaster AR15 assault rifle in his mass murder in Newton. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, between 2000 and 2010, more than two million AR-15-type rifles have been sold by various manufacturers. “It’s a weapon of choice” among firearm enthusiasts and is “hugely popular for recreational target shooting,” according to Guns and Ammo magazine. Have members of the NRA become desensitized and immune to mass murders with assault weapons? Will the rest of us become immune to them too? The handwriting is one the wall folks - assault weapons are not used to for target practice, or to hunt game or for any sport. They are used to kill human beings en mass rapidly and effectively. What’s wrong with the NRA’s perspective? It shows where have we as a society have come? Do we have the ability to recognize mental illness or potential mass murders ahead of time, like in the movie “Minority Report?” The answer is “No.” Do we

have too many assault and automatic weapons? The answer is “Yes.” Add all this up and ask yourself if a minimum wage armed security guard at a school is going to be able to stop someone with an assault weapon? Maybe the security guard is at lunch or on a break. Jackie Devereaux Maybe he’s on the other side of the school when the mass murderer attacks. Maybe this isn’t about assault weapons but rather who has access to guns and who can purchase them. We cannot watch every single person every day. I love the Second Amendment but it’s painfully obvious that it has become a huge problem in the 21st century. Time has come for a change. We need a solution for the problem that the Second Amendment has created. That solution, some say, is a total ban if all assault weapons. Our founding fathers did not intend for the Second Amendment to provide a legal loophole for mass murder, and the issue of gun control has created more questions than solutions. However, it’s clear that the weapons created to kill masses of civilian people should be banned.

be prepared for earthquakes. However, when Dr. Lucy Jones, seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey visited our valley several times to warn us to get ready, I heard her say that scientists are expecting an “8.0” magnitude, not “9.0” as you editorial states (no doubt just a typo). Having been over 20 years in the disaster readiness field, I pay close attention to scientific studies on earthquakes for our country and especially pertaining the San Andreas Fault. Please do print this letter so that the public will be correctly informed, and by the way, the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles was just a 6.7. STARFamily The Right To Bear

“Modern” Arms Should Be

Outlawed! The faces of the children were frozen in terror. Their smallish six and seven year old minds were trying to process the sight of their dead teacher as she lay before them with bright red blood pouring out of her body and covering their class room floor. The first shot from evil’s (I refuse to even write the shooters name) gun exploded like a deafening clap of thunder in their tiny ears. Their little faces turned white trying to understand why this bad man was aiming the barrel of his gun at them and then randomly shooting a class mate. Every shot of the gun caused a ringing in their ears like they had never before experienced. They were paralyzed with the realization that death had come for some of them. They had all been awakened just a few hours earlier to the comforting voices of their moms and dads coaxing them out of the warmth and safety of their beds for the last day of school in the week. Not far from their homes, a 20 year old youth also woke up that morning. But instead of giving his mom

a hug as he did when he too was six or seven years old, he gave her a bullet to the head. Evil had awakened and was about to bring horror and panic to Newtown. I have a respect for guns most younger people don’t. When I was eight years old my dad gave me a rifle and would take me out hunting for rabbits and squirrels. That was our meat for supper. Gun safety, and respect for the power of the bullet, was a lesson taught constantly by the men in my family. In the 1970’s when I lived in Texas, it was perfectly legal for anyone to carry a rifle or shotgun in plain sight in your truck or car. Not so coincidentally, the crime rate was low because of the applied logic of “MAD” – mutually assured destruction. There was no point in pulling a gun on someone because odds were pretty good you weren’t going to walk away free of a bullet hole yourself. Everybody it seemed owned guns. When I finally left Texas, I had accumulated 30 different types of weapons. A few years later, I had the opportunity to move to

Japan, which for all intents and purposes, is a gun free country. The last year I lived in Asia full time was 1996. Japan, a country of 140 million people, had five homicides by gun that entire year. Living in that country changed my view of gun ownership. Today, I don’t own a single piece of armament. When our forefathers wrote of the right to bear arms, they were basing their vision on the single shot musket of that era. They never imagined technology would create the powerful deadly firearms we have today which are capable of such destruction. If America is going to continue to be a

world leader in numerous sectors of human rights and business, then our elected leaders have to say enough is enough and stop the annual $3 billion spread of unabated gun sales. If we started in 2013 and made modern gun ownership and the possession of ammunition illegal, we would begin to see a seismic shift in gun attitudes after 100 years. Thinking far into the future is something I learned in Japan. Japan has 100 year mortgages. Families understand they have an inherent obligation to their future bloodline to build a solid foundation and infrastructure for the following generation. The Japanese ability to think and live in the long term has made them the third most prosperous nation in the world. Will our nation, America the beautiful, ever get rid of guns? Not a snowballs’ chance in Palm Springs in July of that ever happening. What then do we do? Make everyone turn in their current day weaponry for muskets? That is a starting point. Do we make gun and ammunition manufacturers responsible for the injury or death of someone under product liability laws? There can be meaningful answers, but it is going to take brave politicians to change the laws at the possible risk of their careers. The gap between hunter and prey has to be brought closer together. The one shot muskets of yesteryear made for a level playing field. At least the animals had the possibility of escape. If the shooter missed with his aim, the animal was free to run away. It’s tragic the children and teachers in Newtown never had that chance. ‘Tis the Season for…

Galas& Follies PSIIFF 2013 Awards Gala

For the past 24 years, one of the most eagerly awaited annual events of the Desert’s elegant glitz and glamour social season has been the Palm Springs International Film Festival and its accompanying red-carpet, intrigue-filled, black-tie Awards Gala featuring Hollywood’s celebrity “A” list. The names of all the megacelebrities and presenters have not been announced as yet. Festival Chairman Harold Matzner likes to dole them out slowly in order to expand the Festival’s news cycle. However, four major awards have recently been announced: Helen Mirren, Richard Gere, Tom Harper and Mychael Danna. The Academy Awardwinning Mirren will receive the International Star Award on Jan. 5 at the Film Festival’s Award Gala. Presented by Cartier, the Awards Gala will be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Hosted by the perennially beautiful Mary Hart, the Gala will also present awards to previously announced honorees: the cast of “Argo,” Bradley Cooper, Sally Field, Helen Hunt, Naomi Watts and Robert Zemeckis. Past recipients of the International Star Award honorees include Javier Bardem and Gary Oldman.

Helen Mirren The International Star Award recognizes Mirren for an extensive body of work covering more than four decades, and comes as she is receiving critical acclaim for her portrayal of Alma Reville in the film

“Hitchcock,” for which she also has received a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a female actor in a Leading Role. Mirren’s portrayal of Reville, the wife and collaborator of film icon Alfred Hitchcock, lays bare their captivating and complex relationship, told against the backdrop of making the tumultuous, against-theodds 1960’s thriller, “Psycho.”

Richard Gere In announcing that Actor Richard Gere has been named as the recipient of the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Chairman’s Award, Matzner said, “Throughout his career Gere has established himself as an accomplished actor and producer and yet still finds time to support crucial cultural and humanitarian causes.” Matzner also cited Gere for his performance in “Arbitrage,” in which Gere portrays a hedgefund magnate whose world is upended on the eve of his 60th birthday as he desperately tries to complete the sale of his trading empire. Past recipients of the Chairman’s Award include Ben Affleck, George Clooney,

Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman. For his brilliance in transforming the classic stage musical “Les Miserables” into a brilliant film as well as for his innovations in filmmaking, Oscar-winning Tom Harper (“The Kings Speech”) will receive the Sonny Bono Visionary Award. Past recipients of this coveted award include Danny Boyle, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Hazanavicius, Baz Lurmann and Gus Van Sant. Music has always been an essential part of the film experience, and so it is with the score of “Life of Pi,” a story about a young man who survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery, all while forming an amazing connection with another survivor…a Bengal tiger. Mychael Danna is the creative force behind the original compositions featured in the film and their brilliance has earned him the Frederick Lowe Award for Film Composing. Past recipients of this award include T. Bone Burnett, Alexandre Desplat, Danny Elfman, Randy Newman and Diane Warren. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is one of the largest film festivals in North America, welcoming more than 135,000 attendees each year for its lineup of new and celebrated international features and documentaries. The Festival is also known for its annual black-tie Awards gala, honoring the best achievements of the prior year. The Palm Springs International Film Festival runs from Jan. 3-14, 2013; the red-carpeted Gala will be held on Jan. 5, and is presented by Title Sponsor, the City of Palm Springs, which is celebrating its 75 years anniversary in 2013. Presenting sponsors are Spencer’s, The Desert Sun, Entertainment Tonight and Wells Fargo Bank. Major sponsors are Regal Entertainment Group, Bank of America, Wintec, Wessman Development, Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau. STARTravel Revised Airport Security Screenings

Even if you have not flown on a commercial aircraft in the past 11 years you have undoubtedly heard the horror stories surrounding the job-performance (or nonperformance) of the Transport Security Administration’s (TSA’s) blue-clad inspectors. In an effort to quell some of the complaints, the TSA has recently announced it has updated its screening process to help children, seniors and trusted travelers move through airport checkpoints more easily and quickly. Children, age 12 or younger, can now go through airport security without taking off their shoes and, to minimize the need for pat-downs, children are now allowed to go through metal detectors and body scanners several times in an effort to clear any alarms. Other current rules pertaining to children are that TSA inspectors will never separate children from their parents or guardian, all children’s luggage will go through the X-ray machine and travelers with small children are able to take on board more than 3.4 ounces of liquid, such as breast milk, juice and medicines. Screening changes for passengers who are 75 years or older are similar to the process for screening children (absent the liquid allowance). Not only will elderly persons be permitted to go through

the metal detector and body scanners several times in order to clear any alarms, they will also be able to go through the screening process without removing their shoes and can go through a security checkpoint without removing a light jacket. The TSA also has a new program to help frequent travelers move through security checkpoints faster. The program is called “TSA Pre” and is available in more than 30 U.S. airports to frequent passengers of certain airlines. Advantages of the TSA Pre are that passengers who have enrolled in the program need not take off their shoes and belts while going trough security, can keep their computers inside their bags and they can go through security without taking off a light jacket. To enroll in TSA Pre or to learn more about the program, go to www.GlobalEntry.gov.

DesertSTAR

It’s the least they could do; after all, he bought the airplane. Or so it must seem to Tom Stuker after United Airlines honored him by painting his name of one of their multi-million-dollar 747 aircraft. Just why does he merit such recognition? Stuker has just become the first United Airlines customer to fly one million miles on United and United Express in a calendar

year. And, this is not his only accomplishment; in July 2011, Stuker became the first United passenger to fly more than 10 million miles with the airline. Stuker estimates he has flown more than 6,000 flights on United, including 400 in calendar year 2012. To equal the distance that Stuker achieved this year, a traveler would need to trek around the world about 40 times; or, cruising at 570 miles per hour, a single nonstop flight of one million miles would take 73 days to complete. His 11 million miles flown on United would put him about a third of the way from earth to Mars. What type of job accounts for Stuker’s remarkable mileage accumulation? No, it wasn’t in the travel industry directly; Stuker is an automotive sales consultant. So, the next time you are in one of the world’s airports and you see a gentlemen racing to catch a connecting flight, say hello to Stuker. He will be easy to spot surrounded by a green aura, the result of all the radiation exposure he’s had from the many x-ray scans he has gone through.

Mattern is no stranger to Death Valley or the Mojave Desert. He has been exploring the region for nearly five years. He created the website Deathvalleyjim.com in the summer of 2011 to share history and his findings of ghost towns, Native American sites, and other places of interest in the desert. Friends of the Palm Springs Library

Launch New Website

PALM SPRINGS – Friends of the Palm Springs Library (FOPSL), an organization dedicated to promoting community interest in the Palm Springs Public Library, has launched a new, interactive website to help facilitate interest in the library and to assist the organization in developing its membership base. “We conducted a community survey this past summer, and the majority of respondents told us there should be more promotion of the library, and that promotion should include a public outreach program to encourage our residents to get more involved,” said Chris Seidel, president of FOPSL. “This new website is an extension of that effort, and is very easy to navigate. We feel it will serve as a substantial tool to help us reach our goals.” The new website, www.friendsof thepalm springslibrary.org, offers information on how to become a member of FOPSL, details about the Friends sponsored book club, and instructions on how to volunteer or make a donation. The site also lists upcoming events, and offers information about the history of the Friends. Currently, the library must undergo a substantial

renovation and extensive infrastructure upgrades, along with ongoing support for materials and public programming, in order to support basic 21st century services. The Friends have raised more than $500,000 to purchase books, movies, visual arts, music, furnishings and electronic equipment. The Friends of the Palm Springs Public Library encourage and administer dues, gifts and bequests. Library Friends also sponsor a book club, and help promote the critical fundraising programs and service events that help raise the funds needed to purchase library materials and equipment. FOPSL supports the library in the effort to provide world-class services to the community. For more information, call 760-668-8838 or go to www.friendsofthepalmspringslibrary.org.

When the big game rolls around, you want to make sure you have everything ready to go so you can focus on the action. Prepping in advance for watch parties and tailgating means you don’t have to worry about last-minute details. And while standard watch party fare may be enticing, game day snacking guilt can set in once the day is over. Avoid snacking guilt by serving up flavorful, better-foryou dishes that will still please the party palates of your fellow fans.

Holiday Film Fare in Disney.Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.”

3D

The winter holidays take us to a new dimension as winter blahs become hurrahs with Hanukah, now past, Christmas almost present and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day yet to come. In that spirit two upcoming 3D movies take us to magical, mysterious realms presented in a third dimension. Kids will enjoy the re-release of Disney.Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.” and Paramount‘s “Cirque du Soliel: Worlds Away,” will be a treat for all ages. “Monsters, Inc.,” a fun filled romp about our childhood fears, is about monsters in the closet or under our beds, hiding in the darkness, waiting Theda Kleinhans Reichman to hop out when the lights are turned off. The idea for this witty, sort of scary story came into being when writer, director Pete Docter began conjuring up ideas for a film of his own following his assignment as supervising animator on the landmark 1995 computer animated film, “Toy Story.” Doctor was intrigued by the idea that kids have “unnamed, unconscious fears and create monsters as a way to make them tangible, but if monsters represent childhood fears, what are the monsters themselves afraid of?” For Docter the answer was obvious--monsters are scared of children. This is the case in “Monsters, Inc.” as head monster Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) goes out every night to elicit screams from scared little tots. He isn’t trying to be mean, it’s just his job and this big, blue furry creature is good at it. Then there’s Sully’s best pal Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal) who is a one-eyed green guy with a big grin. The meanest monster, however, is Randall Boggs, given voice by Steve Buscemi who is always good at being bad. One night Sullivan goes to scare an adorable little girl he nicknames Boo (Mary Gibbs) and somehow she slips into the monsters’ world. They are terrified of her because monsters believe all children are full of germs. But soon Sully, and even Mike, learn to love her--germy or not. Docter notes that the monsters in his film are just “normal everyday ’Joes.’ They clock in, clock out and talk about donuts and union dues. Scaring kids is just their job.” But why do they do it and how do they do it? To find out, come see “Monsters, Inc.” in 3D. Even if you saw it years ago, this frightfully funny fairy tale is still very enjoyable for all ages and now it has taken on a whole new dimension--so come and see it all again in 3D. Rated G, of course.

“Cirque du Soliel: Worlds Away”

Another way to enjoy Cirque du Soliel’s fabulous world of make believe is to experience it on film. On December 21st Paramount Pictures will release “Cirque du Soliel: Worlds Away” in 3D. The film is a love story about Mia (Erica Linz) and an Aerialist (Igor Zaripov) who enter magically into another world looking for one another. During the course of their journey we too experience the wonder and artistry of many Cirque du Soliel productions like “Mystere,” a Las Vegas show that explores the mysteries and magic of life and “O,” an amazing water spectacular with feats performed above, in and on the water. If you have not yet experienced a Cirque show in Las Vegas or elsewhere, now is your chance to enter into their mysterious, colorful realm at a price the whole family can afford. And it is as close as your movie theatre.

Happy theatrical holidays to all.

Heartworm Prevention:

Should I give my dog a drug

every month?

By Dr. Paula Terifaj, DVM and Owner of the DogSpa

Yes and no. The best predictor of your dog’s true risk for heartworm infection is to know something about mosquitoes, geography and climate. Worldwide, more than 3,500 species of these blood sucking i n s e c t s h av e b e e n identified. In California, only three species of mosquitoes may carry the heartworm larvae. First, the mosquito itself must become infected by taking a blood meal from an infected animal. So, not all mosquitos pose a risk.An infected mosquito serves at the vector – helping the heartworm parasite to complete its lifecycle in its target host (furry mammals such as canines, coyotes, foxes and felines) where the larvae grows into adulthood and can compromise the heart and arteries. Most prominent is the western treehole mosquito. An appropriate nickname for a creepy creature that likes to take up residence in oak trees, which provide tree holes that fill with water when it rains. Therefore, woodlands with a relatively dense canopy offer ideal breeding conditions and the most suitable habitat. A l s o n otewo r t hy is the weather. Larvae development (baby heartworms) inside the mosquito is temperature dependent. Below a

www.desertstarweekly.com

temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit , development cannot occur – thus the mosquito bite is harmless. Therefore, successful transmission is limited to warmer months. So, California spring and summer travelers beware: throughout the coastal and Sierra-Nevada foothills, your dog may be at risk. And if you are planning a move to one of our northerly California cities (San Francisco Bay area and beyond) – you are headed to the home base of these bloody blood suckers! So, stay put desert rats, and enjoy the dry, succulent terrain of the Coachella Valley. Mosquitos hate it here! And here is another fact: The latest data for Southern California reports a measly heartworm infection rate of 0 – 5 percent. That is the lowest rate in all 50 states! For my fellow desert rats, here is my advice: Forget about monthly parasite control and spend

Dr Paula Terifaj and Brad Pitt those vet dollars on pet insurance – something every pet needs. If doubt lingers, opt for a yearly blood test to determine if your dog has been infected. Early treatment is curative. The highest infection rates of 45 percent for those poor dogs not on preventative drugs are observed within 150 miles of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from the Gulf of Mexico to New Jersey and along the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. Paula Terifaj, DVM is owner of the DogSpa Resort & Wellness Center in DHS. She is available for holistic consultations. You can read more articles on her blog, Dog-Breath, at www.DogSpaResort.com. You may submit your own Ask the Vet question to editor@ desertstarweekly.com . Only questions that serve to educate a wide audience of concerned dog owners will be selected.

TOP TIPS: Sit. Stay. Heel. These simple commands can make a huge difference in the life of a pet parent. Whether you’re introducing a new dog or puppy to the family, or you have a dog with some behavior issues, training can help ensure a well-adjusted pet and a happier family. According to the American Kennel Club, dog training can: Help your dog become a welcome member of the family and the neighborhood; Correct behaviors such as jumping on people, digging, chewing and barking. Provide mental and physical activities for your dog; Deepen the bond between you and your dog; Ensure your dog’s happiness and safety. Beyond teaching the basics of sitting and staying, training can include correcting behaviors. One common dog behavior that often needs

alternative for these social situations.” Teaching your dog to sit first and then allow interaction can be a good solution. Here are helpful tips on how to make your pet a great greeter: Have everyone that interacts with your dog ask him to sit as he approaches them. If he sits, they can bend down to greet him. If he jumps up, they stand up immediately, fold their arms and stare at the ceiling, repeating the signal to sit. As soon as he sits, reward him by continuing with the greeting. It’s important to reward

correcting is jumping on people. “Dogs are sociable animals and often sniff muzzles when they greet each other,” said Debbie McKnight, training expert for PetSmart. “A dog that jumps on someone to greet them is often trying to make contact with the person’s face. It’s important to teach them an acceptable

your pet so they are constantly being reminded of how to behave. At PetSmart, trainers offer treats and verbal applause to dogs after a job well done. At home pet parents can use treats or fun toys as a reward to encourage positive behavior. Professional training classes are beneficial for many

Photos courtesy of Petsmart dogs and are available for several different levels, from basic classes that can help them socialize properly, to more advanced classes that can keep them safe and correct behaviors. At PetSmart, local store trainers work with you and your dog for six weeks, teaching techniques for you to practice at home. Goals for each level of training are different and are set by the pet owner based on what they learn in class. For example: Beginner dog goals may include: Not jumping on people; loose leash walk around the block. Intermediate dog goals may include three minute down-stay; heeling down the block Advanced dog goals may include heeling through a crowd; “Go to your bed” when the doorbell rings; coming when called at the dog park. Professional training is a complement to what you do at home, and practice is important at all levels. As a dog progresses through training, pet parents should make the behaviors they ask for harder during everyday practice. So rather than a basic sit before his meal, for example, try a sit-stay command for 15 seconds from 10 feet away. PALM SPRINGS – “A Whisper to a Roar,” a moving and timely documentary capturing the energy of democracy movements around the world explores the personal costs and the high stakes for democracy activists, who risk everything for freedom. The film will screen at the upcoming Palms Springs International Film Festival on Jan. 6 and 8. The film spotlights and personalizes the perilous plight of pro-democracy activists in five countries as they struggle against authoritarian regimes, past and present. “A Whisper to a Roar” is directed by Ben Moses, the Emmy awardwinning creator of “Good Morning, Vietnam,” and was inspired by the work of renowned democracy scholar and author Larry Diamond, whose book, “The Spirit of Democracy,”

played a huge part in the foundation of the film. With remarkably serendipitous timing, the release of the film coincides with a wave of democratic expansion sweeping the globe, focusing on the birth pains of democracies in Egypt, Malaysia, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. In each case, the filmmaker captures the personal story of the freedom fighters

with first-hand intimate interviews with the activists, as well as with some of the current and former leaders of these countries. The film screens at the Palm Canyon Theatre on Jan. 6 at 4 p.m. and Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. Filmmaker Ben Moses will be appearing for a Q&A after the two screenings. Capricorn Solar Festival, Last Full Moon of 2012

Friday, sometime after midnight, is the last full moon of 2012. It’s the Capricorn solar festival. This full moon of Initiation concludes both the Festival week of the New Group of World Servers (NGWS) and the long awaited year of 2012. A full moon occurring during or at the close of the Festival Week (Group Impact) provides the NGWS with a greater potency of Light (revelations), opportunities to aid and assist humanity for the next seven years. In turn, the cosmic events of this last week will accelerate the intelligence, love and evolution of humanity. Light (from stars, suns, planets, Earth, etc.) contains information which translates into intelligence and love within humanity. During this full moon our Earth will absorb the great cosmic light, overshadowing the sign of Capricorn, released throughout the past week. This light/information will be anchored into the hearts and minds of humanity. It contains the seeds and vision of the future, a new creation built of constructiveness, love, intelligence, harmony, inclusiveness and synthesis. Every one of us can share this vision, a working out of the Plan forming the foundation for Right Human Relations and World Unity. Let each of us enter 2013 with this imagined vision. Let none of us be swayed from our focused dedication to create a new world. Let us think in terms of the one family, one life and one humanity. There’s hard work ahead in 2013 (#6). Let us stand strong together. Happy New Year everyone. ARIES: Your ability to communicate with more and more people becomes possible as you see the importance of expressing your ideas so that others can understand and help you. This is the year for stabilization. If traveling, make sure the vehicle is safe. Don’t assume more than you’re able. Make time for friends,

14

join a group, and focus on using resources to bring forth the new culture and civilization. TAURUS: This coming year will test the bonds you have in relationships (all types). There are needed lessons to be learned. Most important is your communication. It’s easier to be solitary, study, read, tend to chores, garden, visualize the future. These can be obstacles to communication. All of a sudden everyone’s gone. You must learn to listen. Not walk away. This will be a hard lesson. You will be challenged. You will learn. GEMINI: You have visions to pursue, abilities to try out, freedom to get used to. Along with restlessness and a new sense of confidence you may gain weight (Jupiter in Gemini). This is natural. Jupiter expands all levels. Knowing this allows you to understand all events within an inner causal (esoteric) framework. Although freedom calls, you must maintain previous responsibilities. Allow nothing to hide your humor. It saves everyone. CANCER: So many things from the past are reviewed. We grow in relationship to how much the past is loosed from the present. Our past always serves us well. Then it’s no longer useful. You will experience a caring protective time. Some of your life will be lived behind the scenes. Tend daily to each responsibility that appears. Ask yourself what you have faith in. And what supports you. Keep these close. Allow no glamours. LEO: Whatever you say to others will plant seeds of thought within their minds, providing ideas that become ideals within them. Your vision and optimism are needed for those around you who will adopt them as hope and a sense of promise. Everyone interacting with your life also needs inspiration. That is a fiery word. It’s a Sagittarian word. One that allows people to see a future filled with new direction. These are your tasks in the New Year. VIRGO: All your hidden talents, skills and gifts you tend to so carefully come forth in the New

DesertSTAR

Year. They are recognized as you stand in a clear light. Everything in our lives is astrologically planned. Choose your thoughts, ideas, plans and agendas very carefully. Be aware that any gossip, judgments

and criticism will be magnified and turn on you. Make everything good. God is good. LIBRA: Seeking new understandings in the New Year you will perhaps study, travel, learn a new language, prepare new

foods, -discover cultures you’re unfamiliar with, write a book (or blog), find a publisher or agent. All of these will be adventurous. Your optimism senses a larger picture of reality concerning life, family and relationships. Forgiveness is a major factor. Careful with money, schemes and any type of gambling. You won’t win. SCORPIO: Notice your conversations. They will deepen. An inner transformation comes about; you feel a sense of power with others and a sense of empowerment. Remain in present time realizing thoughts create the future, now or later. You assess your many resources and inheritance, physically and spiritually. You work with others, combining resources. You see that you are rich with possibilities. SAGITTARIUS: You will assess how you relate to others, personally and impersonally.

Your ability to negotiate and compromise expands. You will sense a greater joy. New partnerships are offered. Previous partnership wounds dissolve. This makes you happier, with a sense of true personal success. Blessings come your way. You consider being a coordinator, consultant, planner, coach. Or you see someone in this capacity. Be warm with everyone. Be true. CAPRICORN: In the New Year, you find new friends and a group that fulfills your search for happiness. People, hearing your ideas and plans, respect and are inspired by you. Your teaching abilities emerge. You’ll be in neighborhoods, downtown, out and about, all around. As you expand into the community, home life will need tending in different ways. Do not overextend yourself. Eliminate sugar, then gluten. You will connect mind and body with health and holism. The Yoga of daily life. AQUARIUS: Your mind will be filled with ideas, thoughts, hopes and wishes that are part of a long held dream. A friendship becomes something more (or less). You’ll be more playful, less

serious, taking more risks. Is there something somewhere that needs cleaning out? Eliminate items you’re not using. This will free up non-moving energy. Things may feel dramatic, up and down, emotional. Use your feelings to radiate loving kindness. PISCES: You will want to change your domestic situation, expand it, create an addition, move, decorate, re-design. This is your external reality. AutomotiveSTAR It’s Their “Forte”

2013 KIA Forte Koup SX By Lizett Bond & Kerry Morse

Most car reviews are done as solo impressions. Even on scheduled press trips where journalists are mated with other assorted hacks, the words and opinions that later appear are for the most part, singularly based. However, when it comes down to a real time purchase, often the single option is weighed against the reality of a family or one’s partner also using said vehicle. My way of evaluating a new offering has been to use the ride in as many mundane, everyday situations as possible, and throw in a weekend road trip. Since many of those quick excursions are often with an accompanying party, there are usually differing thoughts and reactions to the ride or particular moment. A weekend at Sonoma’s Raceway was the perfect time for some give and take with my long term driving partner and, as Lizett and I have very different driving styles, the time together in a form of transportation can either be pleasant contemplation or hand-to-hand combat. KIA has been making visual inroads into the public perception over the last few years with “of the moment” design and quality. No longer simply thought of as cheap transportation with a strong warranty, KIA wants to push the image to that of a first choice rather than something to settle for simply due to price. The new Forte is affirmation that Germany, and not Japan, is the basis for the overall look of the Forte. So what’s it like to live with and make a thousand mile weekend run to the wine country and back? Lizett’s turn… I hate driving at night. In my opinion, nighttime is for sleeping and starting a trip in the wee small hours is not the best time to form an opinion. My first impression upon awakening in a rest area along I-5 at daybreak was, “these seats make a lousy bed.” In reality, the firm, leather-trim sports seats with multi adjustments served their purpose, keeping me quite comfortable for the previous six hours of mainlining through California’s bread basket. They just aren’t designed to encourage nodding off. Speaking of head nods, an economy four banger had better bring something to the table aesthetically. Because when it comes down to it, dependability is commonplace and they all give good gas mileage. Thirty-one MPG highway just puts the Forte in with the pack for this segment of the automotive market. I want something that is going attract attention when I pull in. I love it when people notice my ride so it’s gotta have some cool factor.

2013 KIA Forte Koup SX

The Forte Koup SX delivered, albeit ours was “Racing Red,” which mixed sport-factor in with the cool. In Santa Nella, of all places, the car passed the test as a young couple walked right up and asked how we liked “our” car. The Forte does look more aggressive, it’s wedge shaped and sleek looking and, let’s be honest, aren’t we all, at least a little bit, about “image?” One of the main points to judge a car after a long drive is driver fatigue. There are so many factors that can wear a driver down, harshness due to the suspension settings, tire and wheel package,

etc. This Forte, as equipped, ranks as one of the least fatiguing rides I have experienced in some time. The shift points of the six-speed automatic are matched well with the motor. What the Forte lacks is the performance upgrade that a tuner no doubt could provide. The 2.4 liter four cylinder does the job adequately, however the exhaust note sounds as if it is straining to make the revs. To truly compete against the similar offerings from Europe in the same class, this will have to be addressed. The Forte has the look, the value is obvious, KIA is intent on pushing ahead and this effort is going in a positive direction. 2013 KIA Forte Koup SX MSRP $19,800 As tested with options $ 24,600

Notice is hereby given that RECONTRUST COMPANY, N.A., as duly appointed trustee pursuant to the Deed of Trust executed by CHARIS CORRELL., dated 10/27/2004 and recorded 11/2/2004, as Instrument No. 2004-0868660, in Book , Page , of Official Records in the office of the County Recorder of Riverside County, State of California, will sell on 01/23/2013 at 9:00AM, 400 North Main Street, Corona, CA 92880, Auction.com Room at public auction, to the highest bidder for cash or check as described below, payable in full at time of sale, all right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by it under said Deed of Trust, in the property situated in said County and State and as more fully described in the above referenced Deed of Trust. The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 68225 CALLE BONITA, DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA, 92240. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $272,569.32. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case TS No. 12-0062733. STARDiversity surface, it’s important to talk with someone about those feelings. Often, the best person to talk to is a therapist - someone objective, professionally trained, and empathetic. The LGBT Community Center of the Desert has a counseling center where we see clients of any age on a sliding scale, regardless of ability to pay or insurance. There is also a specialized program for seniors to deal with the symptoms of isolation and apathy related to late life depression. “So, whether it’s sadness, the stress of the holidays or any other problem, we are here to help.” Jill Gover, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist PSY13880, Director of Counseling and Wellness Programs. with the Holiday Blues PALM SPRINGS - The Holidays are upon us and for many people that means counting our blessings, eating, spending time with family and friends, gifting and perhaps even reflecting on our lives. Partying and consumer madness aside, there can be a profound sense of gratitude that comes from counting one’s blessings. This is a time of year when the depths of our relationships are measured and celebrated. However, this is also a time of year that can be very stressful for a variety of reasons. Unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others, thoughts of not measuring up, and family estrangement can turn the season of joy into a season of sadness and anxiety. Despite media portrayal of the Beaver Cleaver family as the norm, many families are dysfunctional, and the holidays can be a nightmare rather than a blissful time of celebration. For LGBT people there’s the stress around family acceptance of sexual orientation or gender identity. Those who participate in family gatherings for the holidays feel the added pressure of either hiding a part of who they are, or fighting to gain equal recognition for their partner. Those who are estranged from family feel the sadness associated with rejection. And for those who are “orphaned” and bereft of family, the loneliness is more acute. LGBT seniors often find the holidays difficult because the emphasis is so much on family, and many of us don’t have family. Parents have died, and if we didn’t have children, there is no younger generation to embrace us at this time of year. Siblings, nieces and nephews may be geographically far away, and there are no grandchildren to fuss over. Historically, LGBT people have formed chosen families, “logical kin” consisting of friends, to make up for this void in their lives, but during the holidays, it’s hard not to feel the loss of family support. In order to make the holidays a time of joy rather than of sadness or stress, it’s important to plan in advance what you want to do to celebrate the season, and to thoughtfully decide what’s realistic, within your budget, and “stressfree”. Developing a plan ahead of time gives you something to look forward to

Justin Hibbard:

Lends Voice To Palm Springs American Cancer Society

By Alejandro Pais

PALM SPRINGS - Justin Hibbard, one of the leading voice-over artists in Southern California, made what is both a unique and landmark announcement on behalf of The Palm Springs American Cancer Society on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the Saguaro Hotel to kick off 2013’s ACS Relay for Life. “This year’s Palm Springs Relay for Life will be for The LGBT populace of Palm Springs, which is a first in The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life History” announced Hibbard, who went on to announce a radical fun to new format to The Relay as well. “It’s going to be a 24-hour dance, rather than just a walk around the track. We are going to make Palm Springs’ Relay for Life the most successful one in their history next year – I am so excited and honored to be an integral part of The Palm Springs American Cancer Society.” Hibbard is no stranger to lending both his voice and presence to both philanthropic and entertainment organizations. After years as a TV news anchor across the country, Hibbard moved to Los Angeles and started his own company, “Just the Voice Productions” in Venice, California. He has a signature voice

that has gotten him major voice over work. “I’m enjoying great success voicing ongoing projects with Bank of America, Fidelity, Dell, Motorola, Pfizer, AT&T and JP Morgan,” said Hibbard. “I recently expanded my company, ’Just the Voice,’ into live event, ‘Voice of God,’ announcing for the entertainment industry publication Variety, and just served as the French narrator for an AIG corporate imaging video.” Hibbard has become one of the most successful voice-over artists in Southern California by carefully choosing such unique and diverse projects to keep his business distinctive and eclectic. While he resides in Venice with his long-time partner, Justin’s presence retains a high level of visibility in the Palm Springs area, where he will also serve as co-captain of his team for The Palm Springs American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, but will lend his expertise to being the Relay’s Entertainment Chair. “The Relay will be on August 2-3, 2013 at The Riviera Hotel, from 5 p.m. to 5 p.m., and it will be a oneof-a-kind life changing experience, so I encourage all to join us to fight this horrible disease that shows no prejudice.” For more information go to the Palm Springs ACS Relay for Life at www.relayforlife.org/index or visit www.justthevoice.com.
