SALTON SEA – Supervisor John J. Benoit extended an invitation for U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to join the Salton Sea Authority. Benoit was encouraged by the Secretary’s positive reception and promise of short term help and exploration of long-term federal involvement in the governance of the Salton Sea Authority. “Secretary Salazar expressed that we all need to work together and that people at the local level have the best understanding of the Salton Sea.” SEE PAGE 2

“I extended an invitation to him to join the Salton Sea Authority and get the federal government on board in some form or status.” Benoit joined Secretary Salazar, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, Congressman-elect Raul Ruiz and Assemblyman V. Manuel Pérez in a tour of the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge Friday afternoon. Assemblyman Pérez has proposed legislation to yield the lead on Salton Sea restoration efforts from a disbanded state committee to the local authorities on the Salton Sea Authority, who are committed to developing a feasible action plan for restoration. Following the tour, Benoit spoke before an assembly of local, state and

federal representatives about the need for the federal and state governments to be a part of the Salton Sea Authority’s efforts. He spoke afterwards personally with Secretary Salazar. Sen. Boxer opened the discussion with a moment of silence for victims of today’s school shooting in Connecticut. Supervisor John J. Benoit represents the Fourth District on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. Stretching from the Palm Springs area south to the Salton Sea and east to the Colorado River, it is the largest geographical district in the county. Benoit’s regular office hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Emergency: Are We Really Prepared? Just in case something cataclysmic does happen on Dec. 21, 2012 at 11:11 a.m., my husband, Tom, and I stocked up on some emergency items for the big event. Water is the number one thing to have on hand. Even though our city (Desert Hot Springs) is known for its award-winning water, you never know when our aquifers and wells may become contaminated. My cache of goodies includes: five cases of bottled water, several gallons of distilled water and a couple cases of Perrier. Then we loaded some sturdy plastic crates with emergency canned goods, such as baked beans, tuna fish, fruit cocktail, soups,

nuts and other assorted foods you can eat without heating. We especially looked for cans with pop tops for easy access and packed two hand-crank can openers for the rest. A number of doomsday prophets claim that on this date the Earth will fall into “three days of darkness.” This happened recently when Superstorm Hurricane Sandy hit the East coast on Oct. 29 plunging most of New Jersey and New York City into a week without power. If we do experience a global or national or even regional blackout, then we’re prepared. We bought a bunch of candles, two large black police-service flashlights with enough batteries to last a

moment’s notice. And we have extra dog food on hand for our beloved dog, Ray Ray. We also bought some dried beef and salmon jerky along with dried trail mixes that will store for a few weeks. I do not believe that FEMA (Federal Emergency Management

Administration) will be able to help everyone affected by a massive catastrophic event, so I’m ready to take care of myself. I’ve learned from Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina that when something big strikes, we shouldn’t expect the government to rescue us, at least not right away. The troops will arrive but it may take a few days or weeks depending on the severity of the catastrophe. M a ny Americans have armed themselves with weapons fearing the worst. This could be good or bad depending on your environment and apocalytic situation. People are prepared to defend themselves against any looters or robbers during the blackout. If you’re picking up this newspaper or reading our website and it’s after Dec. 21, know that all the canned and dried foods we stored will be donated to our local food bank afterwards, so nothing will go to waste. at this Dec. 21 date as a trial run for when the real Big One hits, as in a 9.0 magnitude earthquake that is long overdue in California. Desert locals should realize that the San Andreas fault line runs through the Coachella Valley and specifically through downtown Desert Hot Springs along Palm Drive and Pierson Blvd. I live only a few blocks away from this infamous spot. I want to be prepared in case anything cosmic or earthborne happens because the National Guard and FEMA will not rescue me for at least three days because they’re all trying to mobilize and figure out what to do and where to

go first. My Dad was a Marine, and he taught me to be selfreliant. I’m not waiting for the police, fire or military to come to my rescue. I’m ready to help myself, and you should be too! I’m not saying to make a run on Wal-Mart for baked beans and tuna fish or to load up on flashlights, batteries and candles, but it’s not a bad idea to have those things on hand. Hopefully, Dec. 21 will come and go without even a whimper and life as we know it will go on as usual. Have a very Merry Christmas and postapocalypse party!

to the Editor Dear Editor: I read with interest your Editor’s Opinion on charities and the outlandish salaries of various CEOs. It is just incredible that any person that runs a non-profit charity would demand and take salaries in excess of $1,000,000. Folks donate funds to help people, the environment, etc. not to provide funds to CEOs to live luxurious lives with mansions and jets. I agree with most of your column; however, I do have a suggestion regarding the salaries of various CEOs and Commanders you listed. Check the

publication or online “Charity Watch”, a charity rating guide & watchdog report. As an example, you have The Military Order of Purple Hearts National Commander receiving a zero salary. However, Charity Watch has the charity rated as an “F”, only $.32 of every $1.00 goes to actually helping veterns and the Commander takes in $172,000 per year. Another example is the Vietnam Veterans Association is rated “F”, only $.18 of each $1.00 goes to helping Vietnam veterans and the Commander receives $132,000.00. Disabled American Veterans, “D”, $.48-$.67 to helping, and the Commander receives $326,000 - $354,000.00 per year. Charity Watch is funded by donations and is rated as an excellent source to check on charity organizations including performance and funds that actually are used to help the intended services. I enjoy your publication and keep up the good work. Gary Roberts, Palm Springs, CA

Elvis Or Fireman? In 1977 when Elvis Presley passed away, there were only a handful of ETA’s (Elvis Tribute Artists) in the world. Today, according to the Internal Revenue Service, approximately 70,000 people in the United States alone claim annual income in varying amounts as ETA’s. One of those ETA’s is Ceasar Garcia. Just like Clark Kent, Garcia has a day job. Even if he weren’t an ETA, he still rates high on the cool meter. Garcia is a first responder and has been employed with the Los Angeles Fire Department for the past 25 years. Every one of my friends growing up, and every guy I know, at one time or another wanted to be a fireman. A fireman - one the greatest adrenaline professions on the planet, speeding toward danger through town in a big truck full of emergency gear with a siren blaring is the romantic image Hollywood movies have instilled in our minds. While proud to be in a profession that most all grown men secretly Reno Fontana still would like to be a part of, Garcia had a secret ambition that not even his closest friends were aware he wanted to try. He had started watching Elvis movies and listening to his music at ten years old. Garcia wanted to sing those Elvis

In February of 2009, Garcia went as a December 19, 2012

In 2010, he went back to the expo, but this time as an entertainer. “I was so nervous the first time I went on stage my leg was shaking without me even trying to be like Elvis” laughed Garcia. But I went out there in front of a live audience and all the other ETA’s, and just let it fly. It was the realization of a dream”. Garcia was in Palm Springs recently singing gospel music for a Christian group at Elvis’ former home on Chino Canyon. “I really enjoy performing” said Garcia. The ETA world is a brotherhood. I’ve been able to travel to some great places and meet some wonderful new friends as an ETA” explained Garcia. Garcia told me keeping Elvis’ memory alive is important for future generations. Gala, Virtuoso Sister Bertrille PSIFF Gala

With its unparallel knack of picking winners, the Palm Springs International Film Festival has announced three more recipients of gala recognition at the black tie awards presentation at a sit-down gala to be held on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. What do you do when a film is so well acted and directed that choosing among the motion picture’s stars for special recognition is well neigh impossible? With the Palm Springs festival the answer is simple: Give the film an Ensemble Performance Award; and that is exactly how the box office blockbuster dramatic thriller “Argo” will be honored. Starring Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, John Goodman and Bryan Cranston – all of whom are expected to be present – “Argo” chronicles the lifeor-death covert operations to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis. Featuring a broad spectrum of colorful characters, the film - starring Affleck, who also directed and co-produced the film - focuses on the littleknown role that the CIA and Hollywood played in the Iranian drama to free the Americans. Ergo, it was a unanimous choice for “Argo” to be chosen to receive the Ensemble Performance Award. Previous recipients of the Desert Palm Achievement Award - such as Jeff Bridges, Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and John Travolta – will have another cinematic overachiever among

their number in January, as Bradley Cooper receives this coveted honor for, most recently, his portrayal of Pat Solution in the dramaticcomedic love story “Silver Linings.” Having lost his house, his job and his wife, Pat finds himself living back with his mother after spending eight months in jail as a result of a ‘plea bargain.’ But, he is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite

with his wife. All Pat’s parents want is for him to get back on his feet and sharing their obsession with football. Then Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with emotional problems of her own, who offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife … but only if Pat will do something very important for her in return; and therein lies the tale. Cooper executiveproduced the film as well as starring in it, along with Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Demuro, Jackie Weaver, Anuran Khmer and Chris Tucker.

Sally Field

From the girl-next-door, to riding the waves, to flying around in a habit, Sally Field has done it all; enough to deserve several Career Achievement

SocietySTAR Gere To Be Honored At Awards Gala Actress Sally Field in “The Flying Nun” as Sister Bertrille awards. But the role that has most recently brought her to the attention of the Palm Springs International Film Festival is her compelling performance as First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Field, a two-time Academy Award winner gives life to the revealing drama that focuses the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. With the nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. All this did not occur in a vacuum and Mary Lincoln was a force at her husband’s side during these critical times. The Palm Springs International Film Festival whose title sponsor, the City of Palm Springs celebrates its 75th anniversary - runs from Jan. 3 through 14 on multiple screens throughout the city. The black tie awards gala will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5. More information is available at 760-322-2930.

Virginia Waring Int’l Piano Competition Equally entertaining, but as some may say, on a more elegant scale, the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition has announced a distinguished slate of five judges for next February’s competition. They are Sara Davis Buechner, Jon Nakamatsu, Anton Nel, Orli Shaham and Nelita True. Also recently announced is that 17-year-old phenom, Jan Lisiecki, the 2007 Junior

Solo Winner will be the guest performer at the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition’s Black and While Gala to be held on Feb. 15, 2013. The evening includes hosted cocktails, music program and

gourmet dinner; individual tickets are $300 per person. There are several unique features about the Virginia Waring competition. It’s held every other year and contestants are housed by area families. Also, the contestants are only known by numbers, so judging is based solely on the quality, technique and artistry of the performance. Judges receive no biographical or personal information about the contestants. They don’t even meet until after the Awards Presentation, held on the last day of the 8-day competition. Most of the competition events are free and open to the public, while the March 30th Solo Finals and the April 1st Concerto Finals with Orchestra, are low-cost. More information at 760773-2575.

Get A On Your Fears

By Carol Camelot

Virtually no one lives their lives without some kind of fear, sometime. Fear of growing old, or dying young, fear of car or plane accidents, of failure and even of success, of aliens whether foreign or extraterrestrial, and of course – fear of death. There are innumerable fears we experience individually, or collectively, as humans. Though fear serves to warn us of danger as in being intuitive or consciously aware that a mugger is about to attack, we would rather not experience the emotion of fear. It can be so overwhelming and stressful

to deal with life’s travails.Yet here we are, so we muddle through as best we can. In my four hour class the “Disaster Survival Workshop” we cover traumatic emotions as a result of enduring catastrophes such as severe flooding and earthquakes. I have arrived at my own definition of what is fear: Fear is a sense of separation from security and safety. Safety and security for a child can mean his parents are protective and will not abandon him. Safety and security for an elderly person might mean relatives and neighbors who

GRIP

check in frequently and offer assistance with difficult tasks. Fear is reduced for both. What is it that makes you feel safe and secure? For some it is their belief in God, Jesus, the Universal Consciousness, or in the fields of science to conquer diseases which threaten one’s mortality. Ah, mortality! The ultimate fear. No one escapes dealing with it, and as we continue with our lives one by one each of us passes on – to where? One fear is the possible cessation of our conscious minds, personalities, and the skills and knowledge

we took a lifetime to acquire. And the ultimate fear is also of ending up in some place like purgatory or hell. Such a waste if we should no longer exist, if we but expire like a candle flame snuffed out between two wet fingers. But let’s go down two different paths here for the sake of discussion. If you did cease to exist after death, with absolutely no spirit or other existence at all, would it matter? Would you know you did not exist? No, you wouldn’t. So why have fear of this if this is the end of all of us anyway? Religions each state

I belong to Life, and when I die, I will return to Life. Therefore, though I do not understand the process, I trust in Life whether I live or die today.” Or – “God brought me into existence. Legendary Artists Shine On Via New Releases

The Yardbirds and Peter Gabriel are the focus of new DVD releases, while one of The Beatles’ earliest recording projects returns in a splendid stocking stuffer-minded package. Title: Classic Albums: So (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might be interested if you like: Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Daniel Lanois. Tell me more: Few albums crafted in the 1980s remain as relevant and breathtaking as Peter Gabriel’s “So.” Featuring rock radio staples such as “Sledgehammer,” “Big Time” and “Don’t Give Up” (a duet with singer Kate Bush), “Red Rain” and “In Your Eyes,” the groundbreaking album’s history is fully recalled in the newly-issued documentary “Classic Albums: So” (available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital video). There is plenty of great footage blended with interviews from the key players involved in the making of the 1986 classic including Gabriel, co-producer Daniel Lanois, and musicians Jerry Marotta, Laurie Anderson and Tony Levin. Information: A special Nektar album features the progressive rock outfit joining forces with a who’s who of classic rock talents.

Title: Making Tracks: On Tour 2010 - 2012 (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might be interested if you like: Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck. Tell me more: While Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson and other legendary artists championed blues in the early half of the 20th century, it wasn’t until the 1960s when the British refurbished the musical form into their own electric brew. Before legendary outfits such as Ten Years After, Led Zeppelin and Cream found fame in the latter end of the decade it was the pioneering band The Yardbirds that

proved to be the earliest proponent of the style. Not only did the band launch the careers of guitarists Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, but created classic hits including “Train Kept Rollin,” “For Your Love” and “Heartful of Soul.” The newlyreleased twoDVD set “Making Tracks” captures the reunited Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band’s 2010-2011 tour with a mix of 17 songs including the old hits and new stuff. You might be interested if you like: The Beatles. Tell me more: It’s likely more music fans have heard about The Beatles’ first recordings than have actually listened to them. With the release of the terrific “The Beatles With Tony Sheridan - First Recordings: 50th Anniversary Edition,” there is no reason in the world that fans of the Fab Four can’t finally hear the complete versions of standouts including George Harrison’s terrific instrumental “Cry For a Shadow” and the band’s uptempo reworking of “Ain’t She Sweet” in both mono and stereo on a recording designed

to celebrate the 1961 and 1962 recordings that featured John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best (who was replaced by Ringo Starr shortly after the last of these sessions was recorded). There is a 36-page colorful booklet that provides the sterling details surrounding these sessions. The release is available at www.amazon. com.

Album: A Spoonful of Time You might be interested if you like: Rush, ASIA, Yes, Argent. Tell me more: Early prog rock troupe Nektar have issued one of the more interesting albums of 2012 on “A Spoonful of Time.” Not only do singerguitarist Roye Albrighton, drummer Ron Howden and keyboardist Klaus Henatsch revisit some classic cuts from the likes of Rush (“Spirit of the Radio”), Bruce Springsteen (“Blinded by the Light”) and Steve Winwood (“Can’t Find My Way Home”), but a bunch

of legendary musicians join them on their freewheeling sonic ride. Amongst the best tracks on the ambitious 14-track disc include a rousing version of The Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle” with Geoff Downes and Joel Vandroogenbroeck both adding some creative keyboards, an emotive reworking of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” aided by Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese. An obvious highlight is an extensive version of The Doors’ “Riders On The Storm,” featuring bassist Billy Sheehan and legendary Zombies keyboardist Rod Argent. Information: www. STARTravel Kosher Ski Resort Passover, 2013, runs from March 25 to April 2, and there is noting ironic about celebrating the Hebrews’ escape from Egypt while enjoying the pristine snows of Canada.

“It doesn’t seem Kosher.” It’s a phrase that gets bantered about around the world, probably because you don’t have to be Jewish to understand it. But it’s a phrase that won’t be heard around the Nita Lake Lodge in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, next Spring. That’s when the Lodge, a luxury ski resort boasting of unrivaled natural scenery and a complete array of activity options, presents a 10-day, Passover resort package called, “Pesach (Passover) On the Mountain.” Unlike other religious holidays, Passover has requirements that do not make orthodox celebration of the holiday easy. For example, not only must all food served during the holiday not have any leavening agent in them, the entire establishment where food is prepared or eaten, whether home or restaurant, must do a ritual pre-Passover cleaning to get rid of any nonpermitted food items – down

to the smallest visible crumb. To ease the burden of the rituals that observant Jews must follow to celebrate the holiday, the Nita Lake Lodge will offer families a 10-day stay of fun and relaxation, including childrenfriendly activities, gourmet Kosher meals and pristine snow; and, to make sure the entire holiday celebration stays Kosher, a Rabbi will be on call.

Abbey Highclere Castle

Other highlights of the Oxford & Highclere Castle Package are a visit to the historic town of Oxford, where guests will overnight, and a walking tour of its renowned university. They will also explore Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and the backdrop for that other outstanding PBS Masterpiece Theatre Production: Upstairs, Downstairs. Act now if you want to see how the other-half lived; Viking River Cruises is offering special discounts for early bookings.

The Highclere Castle

Even if you have seen only one episode of the superpopular Public Television production of Downton Abbey, you’ve heard that Viking River Cruises is a national sponsor of this period-drama played out in a grand English country house during the first part of the twentieth century. Somewhat less known is the fact that Downton Abbey is really Highclere Castle, owned by the Earl and Countess of Carnavon, and that the Carnarvons have co-created with Viking River Cruises a three-day land extension, known as the Oxford & Highclere Castle Package, that will give tourists a rare chance to discover the sights and history of Highclere Castle. Offered as a pre- or postextension of Viking’s popular Paris and Normandy itineraries, the Oxford & Highclere Castle Package includes a threeday stay in the rolling hills of England’s picturesque countryside, a special champagne welcome and a curated tour of the magnificent estate.

“Choice” is the lowest fare option with nothing added; meaning you probably will get the middle seat in the aircraft’s last, non-reclining row. For an additional $68 round-trip, (“Choice Essential”) passengers get a ‘no change fee,’ one free checked bag and priority boarding. “Choice Plus” costs an additional $88 round-trip, with all the benefits of Choice Essential plus a 50 percent AAdvantage mileage bonus, same-day flight or standby change plus a free drink on board. You get the picture: the sum of the parts is greater than the whole and we haven’t gotten to seat-preference charges yet. Compare this with Virgin America’s plan to increase revenue. California-based Virgin, with service to Palm Springs, has announced that it has opened its first domestic lounge at LAX, known as the Loft. The Loft harkens back to the glamour days of air travel, when getting there was more exciting than the destination, and pre-flight lounges gave one

American Airlines

Last week, this column told a tale of two airports, each half a world apart, in various stages of development. Airlines, too, are in various stages of development, with no better example needed than that of “hidden charges” for services once taken for granted by air travelers. American Airlines hopes it has managed to deflect passengers’ ire about hidden charges by rolling out a new fee schedule. Will it work? You be the judge. Essentially, what American is doing is bundling services into packages, with the extra charge of the package being added to the lowest, no-thrill fare. For domestic passengers these bundles are labeled: Choice, Choice Essential, Choice Plus, Fully Flexible and Business/First. Here’s how it works. Each bundle contains separate perks.

Passengers in the Loft will find a cocktail bar and snacks, WiFi and power charging stations, all in a comfortable, modern environment. The costs: High-mileage passengers receive a certain number of complimentary passes to the Loft each year. But, anyone can buy a daypass for $40; once inside all the amenities, including food and drink, are free. Given the choice, which airline would you fly?

If We Are Still Here,

Investments To Consider For 2013

Based on some interpretations of ancient Mayan documents and other lost civilizations, the end of the world may occur on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. That is just days away at the time of publishing. Hopefully you have made appropriate plans. But if those conclusions are wrong, we thought it would be a good time to start looking at 2013 and what we might want to consider for investments. We’ll spend the next few columns reviewing ideas for the New Year. First and foremost, we all need to take an inventory of our resources: income, expenses, assets and liabilities. Then, how do those resources fit into your financial plan? Based on that answer, you should have some idea of how much risk you should consider taking with your investments and what rate of return you need to support your future goals. Please remember that every situation is different and some investments (even ones that make money) still may not be appropriate for your individual circumstances. Everyone should consult their professional advisors before acting on any recommendations. Some sectors that may offer good growth opportunities next year are technology, emerging markets (Brazil, Russia, China and India), natural gas producers/suppliers and European financial companies. EMC is one of our favorites in the tech sector. It trades at a great multiple and generates lots of cash. It pays a 3 percent dividend and recently had major announcements about new strategic alliances and the

www.desertstarweekly.com

and Argentina have large natural gas reserves. The U.S. is the largest producer of natural gas. Both China and Argentina have obstacles getting to their natural gas. Environmental issues aside, it’s much easier and less expensive to access reserves in the U.S. Everyone is familiar with the mess in Europe. While we aren’t certain they have turned the corner, it could be an area of opportunity in 2013. We will have more details on natural gas and Europe in

cloud going forward. It recently traded at $25. EMC is followed by about forty analysts and not one has it rated as a sell. The vast majority rate it as a buy. Another tech stock we like is Facebook but only if you can purchase it below $22 a share. We think we’ll

Investment Know-How Kevin Powell

see some weakness in Facebook in the near term. Apple is looking attractive at these levels considering its recent 25 percent pullback in price. One of Apple’s biggest problems is they can’t make products fast enough. Most companies would love to have that problem. We like NetFlix but it has had a great run recently. However, they just announced a deal with Disney to start streaming

content in 2016. Corporate raider Carl Icahn has a large stake in the company and it is rumored to be a takeover candidate. If you can purchase NetFlix in the low $80’s we think there could still be value. As the world gets its financial affairs in order, we believe emerging markets will present opportunities. This is a high risk area so we’d recommend using ETF’s (Exchange Traded Funds). Vanguard Emerging Markets (VWO) is one of our favorites along and an ETF for China (HAO) and one for Brazil (EWZ). Nu c o r ( N U E ) i s the largest U.S. steel manufacturer and one of the best run companies in the industry. As we continue to emerge from the global recession, demand for steel should increase. Natural gas prices are currently very depressed. America has an abundance of natural gas and it could be our solution to the energy crisis. So much natural gas has been found thanks to new technologies, that experts are predicting America can be energy dependent within the next decade. Russia, China, U.S.

next week’s column. Please note that the Fiscal Cliff is a wildcard for the next 60 days or until a solution is reached. We are confident that something will be done even considering how little progress politicians have made so far. While it probably won’t be a great, long lasting solution, even a band aide at this point would be better than nothing. If we survive Friday the 21st and then the Fiscal Cliff, 2013 should present some good investment opportunities.

Palm Desert Residents Invited To Apply To Serve On City Committees and Commissions

Health Assessment Survey Begins Continued from page 1

REDH T Holidays!

HARC needs everyone’s help! By just answering the phone and responding to this important survey, Coachella Valley residents can become a key component of helping organizations offer their much-needed programs. HARC Board President, Glen Grayman, MD said, “The 2013 needs assessment will not only help produce the most current, statistically valid data available today, it will also help healthcare professionals better understand the relative progress or setbacks that have occurred within specific categories.” He goes on to say, “Armed with the baseline data gathered in the previous two Community Health Monitors, this updated study gives us an opportunity to identify trends

10

with key metrics.” HARC brings together a steering committee of more than 35 community partners and leaders, which include hospitals, school districts, county government, public safety and private sector interests. All have given input

on the structure of the survey, ensuring that the data will be useful to a wide array of organizations. HARC plans to share the results of the survey in early

2014 when a summary of the findings will be shared with the community. Formed in 2006 by a consortium of more than 35 public and private healthcare agencies, the Health Assessment Resource Center (HARC) conducts a confidential community health status assessment in Eastern Riverside County and the Coachella Valley every 3 years to identify major health and quality of life issues. The nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization is funded in part by contributions from community partners, as well as entities that contract with the agency for customized public health research. More information can be obtained by calling HARC at (760) 404-1945, or visiting the organization’s website at www.harcdata.org.

What the

Get Your Kitchen

Chefs Make

Holiday Ready

Millions of Americans will be taking to the road this holiday season and odds are some of them are coming to your home. All of those extra houseguests mean added kitchen clutter and a sink filled with a plethora of pots, pans and plates. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, you’ll want to make sure the space remains warm, inviting and sparkling clean during the holiday season. Here are some quick tips to help you get your kitchen ready for friends and family: Countertops – Keep countertops clutter free by doing a quick clearing off. Grab a laundry basket and fill it with those piled up papers and magazines, school projects, and miscellaneous items that are taking up precious counter space. After the hubbub of the holiday season has died down, you can sort through the basket and determine where all the items should be stored. Once the counters have been cleared, it’s time to wipe everything down. And don’t forget about those usually unseen spots - move appliances, cookbooks and displays so you can clean underneath them, rather than just around them. Keep in mind that if you have granite countertops, you

www.desertstarweekly.com

need to use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Soap, abrasive cleaners or cleaners with citrus can damage granite. Sink – A kitchen may look spic and span, but one stinky sponge can easily mask all your hard work. The new “Dirty Dishes Dilemma” survey by Palmolive® reveals that close to nine out of ten households (86 percent) have encountered a bad smelling sponge, and almost everyone surveyed (94 percent) said they felt this particular odor impacts

atmosphere. Splotches and stains are a common sink surface menace even with daily cleaning. Use an eraser-type sponge and an all-purpose cleanser to remove them. You can also try cleaning stains with baking soda. Refrigerator – Entertaining during the holiday season inevitably leads to lots of leftovers. Make sure shelves aren’t filled with any food that is past their prime by looking through your refrigerator every few days. Don’t forget

Tommy Cello would like to invite you to learn to make Limoncello, a signature item at Cello’s Bistro in Cathedral City. Classes will be held each Saturday in January - 5, 12, 19, or 26 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Reservations are required and each class is limited to eight people. their kitchen’s cleanliness most. Help keep guests’ noses from crinkling by ensuring bad smells are kept at bay. One way you can do that is with the dual-action formula of Ultra Palmolive® Dish and Sponge FreshTM Dish Liquid, which washes away odor-causing residue on sponges while its cleaning action helps remove stuck-on food. Dishes are left sparkling clean and sponges are left smelling fresh. Another way to help keep your sponge smelling fresh? Properly clean your sponges by removing remaining food particles and thoroughly rinsing your sponge after using the dish liquid. Shiny surfaces also enhance a kitchen’s

to clean the bins and door shelves, too. Another way to keep the fridge smelling fresh is by opening a box of baking soda and storing it on a shelf – this will help absorb any lingering odors. Keep the outside of the refrigerator as sparkling as the inside by wiping down exposed surfaces. Door handles and edges can get grimy so pay attention to those areas. Creating a warm and inviting kitchen space for the upcoming season doesn’t have to be time consuming. A little bit of elbow grease now will get your kitchen ready for the frenzy of festivities ahead. Porsche 911 Carerra: Legendary Sports Car Lives On Forty-two years ago, an exhausted race car driver pointed his underdog race car onto the final stretch of a distant race track, moments away from achieving a place in automotive history. That driver was Hans Herrmann, driving the legendary Porsche 917. In heavy rain, he scored the long-awaited first overall victory at the 24 Hours Le Mans for Porsche in 1970. Much of what shaped the company to that point was in pursuit of that victory - and the spirit of that moment on that rainy morning at Le Mans has defined every Porsche since. Just a few years earlier, Porsche introduced the now iconic 911 coupe to replace the popular 356. The 911

has become the backbone of Porsche success, and it is the longest running automotive production model of all time. The 911 provides the ultimate pairing of performance and practicality among sports cars, a car that can be driven daily on the road and enjoyed during weekends at track events. Now, the newest version of the great Porsche sports car is introduced in

the dramatic form of the new Porsche 911 Carrera and Porsche 911 Carrera S. This seventh-generation Porsche 911 is longer, lower, has a wider front track and is loaded with new features: a new rear axle design to improve dynamic precision and stability, a new electro-mechanical power steering system, Porsche Torque Vectoring, enhanced

Porsche Active Suspension Management and dynamic engine mount technology created for the last generation 911 GT3. The result raises the bar in driving dynamics with even more sure-footed tracking and roll stability. The new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S showcase the Intelligent Performance philosophy - which is improved performance on less fuel with increased efficiency, reduced emissions and reduced mass. It’s the cleanest and most economical 911 to date - and it gets up to 32-mpg without an ounce of performance trade-off. To save fuel, Porsche employs some clever techniques. At stoplights and at idle, the engine shuts off to save fuel, but power remains for comfort and other systems. Also new is “sailing” which basically lets the car coast on long downhill grades instead of maintaining power output that’s not needed. Both are very cool - but the engine restarts from full stop are

This new model is everything any Porsche enthusiast could expect or want in a 911 - big power (400-hp from the 3.8-liter

Porsche 911 interiors have always been spartan and lean on comfort. However, this new interior is something very special. Porsche purists will feel at home inside, and all occupants will feel

Pricing for the base Porsche 911 starts at $82,100 ($96,400 for the S model, as tested). For more information, see your local Porsche dealer, or visit porsche.com.

The Overshadowing & the Chalice of Receptivity

The long awaited time has arrived – Dec. 21, 2012 - the end of a unit of time (k’atun) in the Mayan calendar. Initiated by three new evolutionary cycles the Aquarian Age begins in earnest. The Sun enters Capricorn 3:12 am (Pacific Time) it’s Winter Solstice (northern latitudes), longest night of darkness. After a three-day respite at the Tropic of Capricorn the Sun’s rays turn northward. At midnight, Christmas morning, the new light (holy child’s birth, new state of consciousness) shines forth. Virgo, mother and pregnant Madonna (constellation) shines overhead in the night sky. For esotericists worldwide, Sun entering Capricorn begins Festival Week of the New Group of World Servers (Dec. 21 to 28 full moon). Occurring once every seven years, the Festival this year (2012) occurs at the Mayan calendar’s ending. This is no mistake. In the sky an important astrological alignment occurs. Great spiritual forces, from a vast and distant constellation, will “overshadow” Capricorn (sign of Initiation) and stream information into the Earth. The past comes to a close, inaugurating all that is new (new archetypes, new rhythms, new age). Esotericists are gathering in groups, meeting, studying, meditating and praying together, creating a “chalice of receptivity” as revelations (information) concerning the next seven years are impressed upon all servers’ hearts and minds. Humanity is invited. (Read more at www. nightlightnews.com for local events & around the world, two pyramids being erected [ Santa Cruz & Taos], times of Impact & meditations). ARIES: The gift of your sign is courage, of pioneering energy that initiates most realities on Earth. Sometimes you are reckless and we worry about you. You are kind to animals, you have joy in humanity, you explore and help build, you engineer and are entrepreneurial, your schemes are usually brilliant. Tend to your head, face and throat. Grow geraniums. You are the Emperor. TAURUS: You’re always loving

Try not to be arrogant or standoffish. People will misunderstand. Your colors are gold and scarlet. Wear rubies. Tend to the heart of all matters and to your heart. Grow and eat marigolds. with Two Hours Sleep? In his best-selling book “The 4-Hour Body,” Timothy Ferris seems to prove with photographs and statements from hundreds of athletes and dozens of medical doctors that 1) it is possible to lose 20 pounds in 30 days without exercise (page 70); 2) or gain 34 pounds of muscle in 28 days without steroids and with only four hours of gym time (page 181); 3) produce female orgasms in 15 minutes (page 226); 4) reverse “permanent” injuries (page 294); and 5) triple testosterone and double sperm counts (page 253). These are only a few of the presumably successful “hacks” of the human body reported in this

is that the most beneficial phase of sleep is the REM phase.” (Note: REM is a period of dreaming sleep identified by Rapid Eye Movement in which there is high brain activity similar to the waking state). Ferris continues, “Normal sleepers experience REM for a mere 1-2 hours per day. To reap the benefits of polyphasic sleep, we’ll need to engineer things so that REM is a much higher percentage of total sleep.” “One of the ways to force your brain into REM sleep and skip the other phases is to make it feel exhausted…The way to hack yourself into entering REM sleep without being exhausted is to trick

flexible schedule and can manage to stick with it for several months, you’ll find that you feel amazing and have a seemingly unlimited amount of time during the day to get things done.”

“It is possible to lose 20 pounds in 30 days without exercise” huge 573 page book by Ferris, a self-proclaimed computer “nerd” seeking to become a superhuman. In the 800 word space I have available here, I can only focus on one of the incredible claims made by Ferris. He asks, “Is it possible to cut your total sleep time in half, yet feel completely refreshed?” His short answer is “yes” in a chapter about becoming a superhuman “Uberman.” In his own words, Ferris explained, “In 1996, I once went almost five days without sleep to see (1) if I could make it a week (I couldn’t) and (2) what the side effects would be. Hallucinations cut that little experiment short but I’ve continued to play with different patterns of sleep cycles. One of the most fascinating approaches is that of “polyphasic” sleep: breaking sleep up into multiple segments so you can perform well with as little as two hours of sleep per day.” According to Ferris, “The basic premise of polyphasic sleep

your body into thinking you’re going to get a small amount of sleep. You can train it to enter REM for short periods of time throughout the day in 20-minute naps rather than in one lump of time. This is how polyphasic sleep works.” Ferris then describes five different schedules for polyphasic sleep that he has experimented with. His most satisfactory method was six naps per day with no core “monophasic” sleep. But there is a catch. If you miss a nap within 10 minutes of their scheduled time, Ferris said, “the whole schedule is thrown off, and you’ll feel tired for days. The rigor of keeping the schedule makes it unrealistic for nine to five employees. But if you have a

Then Ferris cites the one year experience of Matt Mullenweg, lead developer of the popular blogging software Word Press, with six 20-minute naps each day instead of eight hours sleep per night. “It was probably the most productive year of my life. The first three to four weeks you’re a zombie, but once you get into the schedule, you don’t even need a alarm to wake up after the naps. I probably wrote the majority of

my code contributions for Wordpress.org during that time. Then I got a girlfriend. That was the end of Uberman, and the beginning of a significantly less productive – but more romantic – phase. It’s nice to be able to spend a normal night with someone instead of just sleeping 20 minutes.” After reading this, do you Dear Reader, think my simple method of regularly eating a treated apple each week to possibly live for hundreds of years is more or less far-out than “Uberman? Desert Hot Spring Police Department

On Saturday, Dec. 15 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. a patron of the Megumi Nail Salon was the victim of grand theft in the 12400 block of Palm Drive during the 2012 Desert Hot Springs Christmas Parade. The victim was robbed of three rings valued at $10,000 – one 18-carat gold wedding band; one carat diamond ring (her mother’s heirloom ) and a one carat emerald and diamond ring, the victim’s engagement ring. An officer of the Desert Hot Springs Police Department questioned the staff and patrons at Megumi’s Nail Salon about the robbery but they had no details except to say that a woman, aged 70, was seated at the victim’s salon chair afterwards. The staff denies any involvement with the theft but could not identify the suspect even though she had paid for services with a gift certificate. Anyone with information about this grand theft robbery is asked to contact DHS Police Department at 760-329-6411 ext. 343. A $500 reward is offered.

the investigation, it appears that the incident was a double homicide-suicide. A mother and her adult daughter were found shot to death in bed in one of the bedrooms, and the mother’s male partner, described as her commonlaw-husband, was found dead in bed in another bedroom of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered at the scene, as well as an apparent written confession by the suspect. The names of the deceased are being withheld until the next of kin are notified. While this investigation is still underway, preliminary motive for this incident appears to be a result of a financial conflict, resulting from the mother’s recently diagnosed terminal illness, and her end of life arrangements. The mother’s adult daughter was visiting from Florida to assist with putting her mother’s affairs in order, and it appears there was some conflict with her common-law husband over how her assets were to be divided. This is an extremely sad, senseless and tragic event for the entire family involved. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lieutenant Charles Robinson of the Cathedral City Police Department at 760-770-0394.

Awakening the Divine or Doomsday? You Decide!

By Renee Baribeau

The idea of shifting from a forceful masculine energy to a nurturing feminine perspective might be terrifying to many. How many of us truly enjoy submitting to power and authority? According to indigenous wisdom keepers, the last 28,000-year cycle has been dominated by the masculine energy. Commonly accepted masculine traits include: strength, logic, hunter, ambition, intellectualism, and aggression. Traditionally the masculine has been the provider. In this model, assertiveness and selfsufficiency have been symbols of success. Outwardly, this ideal manifested as large homes, multiples cars, larger corporations, ruthless takeovers and staunch capitalism. Inherent in this cosmology is selfishness, and a blatant disregard for every other living creature on our planet. This type of thinking is now being challenged. December 2012 heralds the end of the Mayan Calendar, and this event has been interpreted in various fashions. Some indigenous

peoples believe that it indicates a shift in polarity of the earth’s magnetic field, and this Pacha Kuti (according to Q’ero lore Pacha Earth, Kuti turn over) represents the emergence of a divine feminine energy. According to NASA the earth has experienced many shifts, the last one was 600,000 years ago. Survivalists are predicting major disasters, upheaval and death. This shift of consciousness could begin with a period of darkness. As the world seeks to right itself through realignment, it represents a return to the unknown darkness of the womb of the Sacred Mother. A mother is warm, compassionate, intuitive and nurturing. The feminine honors and shows the deepest respect for all life throughout the universe. Like the subtle rhythms of the earth’s magnetic field, change comes gradually. Six years ago, a movie called “The Secret” was released. Many naysayers shook their heads in disbelief as pioneers promoted its divine message across the globe. Slowly but surely, many were inspired to

a greater awakening, a shift in awareness, causing an increase in the earth’s spin and a delicate shift of it’s axis. We now stand before doorway of the unknown. We are witnessing the birth of a child, whose disposition and personality will be discovered over time. There are several things that remain clear; Mother Earth has been abused, neglected and is weary. The recent deluge of tears shed over the East Coast catastrophe was a major cleansing. For several years our planet has pleaded for care and loving attention, like a baby whose diapers need to be changed. The time has arrived for a great awakening. Like a child emerging from the womb, humanity has an opportunity to move in the light, a global shift into a greater awareness and responsibility. The Internet has emerged as a powerful medium, enabling us to share information and create a worldwide community. The era of corporate greed is drawing near. During the past decade we have seen many businesses fail as a direct result of readily available information on the World Wide Web. No longer can the masses be misled by lies and deceit. We are now able to make informed, connected decisions and respond from our emotional selves, all traits of the feminine principle. Do I believe that we are at the edge of doomsday? No! I believe that we are righting what no longer works. We are grieving the loss of our American Dream with tears of sorrow and joy. Our self worth is replacing our net worth. For some this looks like death and doomsday, but I believe that we are ushering a Sacred Shift. Every mother knows it takes a community to raise a child. The time to Awaken to our Divine Self has arrived. Join us on Dec. 21, 2012 at 11:11 a.m. as we join in a global prayer celebration to welcome back our Divine Feminine. http:// practicalshamantravel.com/ call-to-awaken-the-divine-self/.
