What I am thankful for… I’m thankful for being alive because four years ago on Thanksgiving Day 2008, I sat paralyzed in a wheelchair being spoon-fed by my loving and devoted husband, Tom. Our turkey dinner was cooked by two German holistic healers from Los Angeles who came to help save my life because doctors here were baffled by my condition they termed eosinophilic leukemia. My family was scattered across three states and most of my husband’s family sent money to help with my recovery which I am eternally grateful for. Luckily, it wasn’t my time to die. I was given another chance to do something significant and meaningful with my life. Eventually, I regained strength and returned to work at the Desert Star Weekly newspaper an enterprise which I co-founded before my illness.

I’m particularly grateful to City Manager Rick Daniels for completing the $17 million Boys & Girls Club, Health & Wellness Center and John Furbee Aquatic Center. Community Partnership

I’m grateful for the new ownership coming in last April and resurrecting this then-failing newspaper, and for putting me back at the helm as Editor-inChief. I’m grateful for the new ownership hiring Publisher Richard “Mike” Perry who refocused the entire business into a “community relevant local newspaper” that uplifts the desert by portraying it in a positive light as we move forward to a better future. My original vision for the newspaper was to be a respected and valuable news source; to be a venue to help worthy causes and charities; to promote emerging talents; and to provide a platform for an exchange of ideas.

Valley-wide Community Improvements

I’m thankful for all the improvements made to the local communities since moving here in 2008. Palm Desert has built a fantastic Art in Public Places program with beautiful sculpture and artwork from Karen and Tony Barone donated by local philanthropists Alan and JoAnn Horwitz. Its artists like the Barones and people like the Horwitz’ that make me thankful I live in the Desert. I’m grateful for the Rancho Mirage Public Library and all those who work tirelessly to make it the region’s best. I’m grateful to the cities of Indian Wells and La Quinta for being so beautiful and clean you could eat off their sidewalks. They haven’t lost sight of the importance in maintaining attractive landscaping to keep their homes values recession proof. Kudos for bringing “Forever Marilyn,” a 26-foot statue of Marilyn Monroe to Palm Springs which resurrected our world-renowned image as “Hollywood’s Playground. “ And big kudos go to the City of Desert Hot Springs for turning this dusty, remote town, neglected and unrecognized for decades, into a safer, cleaner and more beautiful place to live with all their improvements. DHS has become

November 22, 2012

After wars on two fronts, our troops are finally headed home. Many veterans are returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan to the 29 Palms Marine Corps Base. This certainly will be a morale and economic boost to the HiDesert. Most of the world recognizes warfare as a clear cut “win or surrender” situation. Conversely, America has been engaged in conflicts against hidden enemies in mountainous regions of the Middle East, and we’re winning. Our military intelligence community hunted and tracked down Osama bin Laden; our President sent in the Navy Seals who killed Public Enemy #1 without apologies. I’m thankful that my father was a military man because he instilled great respect and admiration for all those who fought and died for our freedoms. I want to be thankful for all the much-needed reforms (hopefully) coming out of Congress in Health Care, Social Security, Immigration, Jobs, Workers Compensation and the Economy. I remain optimistic that our elected leaders are reinvigorated and look to them to fix these currently broken elements. Although this editorial is not intended to be a political forum but instead a platform for my views and opinions about the important issues affecting the Coachella Valley today.

Global Technology

In the era of global economics and technology which has bridged once remote regions like Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, we are faced with information and images that were never available before. Communication satellites and the Hubble Telescope have given us unbelievable photos of the Sun and other planetary neighbors that will revolutionize our understanding of the Universe. These technological advancements will take us into the future. However, I fear that our focus on the cellphones and iPads have made us lose sight of our traditional family values that Norman Rockwell portrayed in his Saturday Evening Post covers. We’ve lost ground here. Families have Jackie Devereaux drifted apart; marriages are failing at an alarming rate; teenage delinquency has reached new heights and horrors mostly because of drug and alcohol addictions; and most families need two working parents to survive, especially in California. So while we have a lot to be thankful for, we still have a lot of work to do on the family and social fronts. The time has come for Americans to reconnect with their divided family members and fix what ails within.

There are few individuals who have lived whose names are known around the world. Elvis Presley, Nelson Mandella, Albert Einstein, Napoleon Bonaparte and King Tut are examples of global name recognition. I attended a recent VIP, invitation only business symposium presented by the prestigious accounting firm of Ernst and Young. When I learned Mario Andretti was the guest of honor, a smile came across my face much like the first time I rode a bull at a Texas rodeo for a full eight seconds. Andretti has lived a charmed life. His day job was racing cars at speeds that would terrify most people, but as he spoke from a packed room of about a thousand company executives, both men and women, it became quickly apparent that his success stories in motor sports over five and a half decades were directly relatable to any type of business. Born in Montana, Italy (now Motovun, Croatia), Andretti lived in a refugee camp after World War II for seven years from 1948 until 1955. In 1955, the Andretti family was given visas to the United States and 15-yearold Andretti settled into his new town of Nazareth, PA, a city where he still lives today. No one spoke English, and his parents had $125 to their name. Even as a young boy in Europe, Andretti had a passion for automobiles. Soon after arriving in the United States, Andretti got his first job in a car repair shop. This is Thanksgiving weekend. America is the one country that everybody in the world wants to immigrate to with the belief they can build a better future

create an opportunity that will further their dream if they are willing to put in the hours of hard work to make it happen. Passion is the fuel that moves the spirit forward in the face of difficult times. To be in this country on this Thanksgiving holiday is a blessing. Andretti knows that, and from his first days in 1955 as a mechanic in a

cold and dirty Pennsylvania garage, to the stage at the Marriot Resort in 2012 in Palm Desert, California, Andretti told a rags to riches story that had his audience hanging on his every word. Andretti spoke of three principles that should be life guiding forces for everyone, especially anyone in business. First, surround yourself with the best people in your industry. Second, never listen to anybody who thinks being number one is unattainable and third, reward everyone in your organization with encouraging words. Andretti made it a point in his third example to even include the janitor. That in my view makes Andretti a champion even if he hadn’t won races. But win races he did. From the local Saturday night dirt short tracks scattered throughout the United States, to the world’s premier racing palaces,

November 22, 2012

Andretti has collected the winner’s trophy unlike most any other driver – ever. From the Daytona 500 in 1967, to the Indy 500 in 1969, to winning the Formula One world championship in 1978, Andretti survived an era in motorsports when driver’s safety was more of an afterthought than the focus it has become today. One of the most famous victory lane photo’s of all time was shot after Andretti won the Indy 500 (he still wears his championship ring to this day the Indianapolis Motor Speedway awards to the victor). STP owner Andy Granatelli sponsored Andretti’s car that year. Tradition held that the race beauty queen gave the winning driver the trophy and a kiss. Granatelli was so excited with Andretti’s victory that he got to the winners circle first and planted a playful kiss on Andretti’s cheek before the trophy queen arrived.

Who would have ever thought the jalopy car races of the 1950’s would turn the racing industry into the multi-billion dollar business it has become in the 21st century. Having the chance to meet and speak with Andretti for a few minutes was a special life moment for me. Even if you know very little or nothing at all about motor sports, chances are, you know the name Andretti. An accomplished man on the race track and in the business world, Andretti’s legacy will be remembered a millennia from now, and quite probably, a very long time thereafter.

& Ol’ Blue Eyes A Miracle on El Paseo

The holidays always seem to bring a special cache of miracles and “A MIRACLE ON EL PASEO,” benefiting BIGHORN BAM (Behind a Miracle), began Desert’s giving season last Saturday by closing one block of El Paseo to street traffic, (equivalent to closing a block of Rodeo Drive), and creating a Winter Wonderland complete with the year’s first snowfall, live music and an ice rink featuring Olympic caliber skaters. Produced annually by The Shops of El Paseo - the luxury retail and restaurant destination stretching one and a half blocks down El Paseo, east of Monterey - the event raises money for equipment and support for women from throughout the Coachella Valley who are patients of the Lucy Curci Cancer Center at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. Since its inception five years ago, BIGHORN BAM has raised more than $2.56 million in support of local breast cancer programs. This year, A MIRACLE ON EL PASEO featured food, drink, special activities and a donation of sales percentages by the luxury retailers that form The Shops on El Paseo. The cause, the snow and the ice rink had a special significance this year as Olympic gold medallist, Dorothy Hamill, herself a breast cancer survivor, will participated in the event’s grand finale: featuring the arrival of Santa Clause and the lighting of a 60-foot Christmas tree atop the Gucci boutique. Hamill won the Gold Medal in skating at the 1976 Winter Games at the age of 19 and, as a professional, has hosted and skated in most of the highest rated TV skating

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA - Coachella Valley Repertory Theater proudly presents “Thank You for Flushing My Head in the Toilet and Other Rarely Used Expressions” a play about teen bullying by Jonathan Dorf for two performances only Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The CV REP Theater is tucked into the Atrium Mall in Rancho Mirage, announced only by a small lighted sign in its front window. “You’ve got to look for us,” said artistic director Ron Celona, “but once you find us and see a performance in our beautiful little theater, you’ll never forget this live experience.” All other performances are reserved for students from the area, who will be bused in to see the play free of charge. This and future plays will engage local student-actors and feature a thought-provoking question and answer period following each performance. “As CV Rep expands, we envision creating a ‘Junior Conservatory’ that teaches acting to this creativity-hungry youth population, aged 10 and over. Acting and kids is a natural; it gives them a powerful voice, trains them to be assertive, and cultivates artistic and critical thinking skills,” said Celona. Last year, more than 800 children were bused to CV Rep for age appropriate theater productions. “The kids were all highly engaged and animated. Our goal is to reach out to the community with age-appropriate live performance material for ages 10-18. We intentionally select culturally relevant and topically sensitive works to motivate the younger valley population” said Celona. CV Rep gratefully acknowledges granting partners in the Children’s Outreach Project endeavor. The Newman’s Own Fund and The Assistance League pitched in this year to support theater arts for our local children. All performances are at the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre in the Rancho Mirage Atrium located at 69‐930 Highway 111. Tickets are $10 for aged 18 and over. Free admittance to all under 17. The 9-day bicycle cruise begins in Malta on Oct. 28, 2013 and ends in Valencia, Spain, on Nov. 5, allowing passengers time to discover the Mediterranean’s most beautiful islands, including Malta, with its fortress town of Valletta, the unspoiled landscape of Sardinia and the fragrant lemon groves of Sicily. Cyclists will also explore Baroque Mediterranean cities and the picturesque artists’ villages on the island Mallorca, a nice change from “Everyone back on the bus” tourism.

Marina del Rey Boat Parade

For those whose seafaring desires go no farther than the water’s edge, Los Angeles’ Marina del Rey boat parade might be your thing. Created in 1963, as a marketing device of local businessmen to attract people to the waterfront community, 50 years later the Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade – this year called “Celebrating 50 Years, A Solid Gold Christmas” – has grown into an annual attraction that draws thousands of people to the marina to view the festively decorated boats as they float by competing for awards. This year, the Boat Parade will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 6-8 p.m. A fireworks show kicks off the parade of boats and spectators are invited to enjoy the festivities from viewing locations such as Burton Chace Park, Fisherman’s Village and dockside hotels and restaurants. The parade route circles the Marina Channel past Fisherman’s Village, Burton

To add to the colorful festivities, the Marina del Rey Convention and Visitors Bureau is distributing Santa hats with flashing LED lights to the first 1,500 spectators who arrive at Burton Chace Park.

The Perfect Passenger

Ever wonder what your flight attendant thinks about you and whether you’re a ‘perfect passenger’ or not? A survey of more than 700 international cabin crew members, from 85 countries has revealed some surprising results. According to the survey, conducted by on-line search-

?

Marina Del Rey Boat Parade engine Skyscanner, the perfect airline passenger is a European male, in his 30’s, traveling alone for pleasure rather than business and he’s seated in economy, not in first or business class. Along with likes, there are dislikes; and, with an average of three million people flying each day, some regular habits and requests can understandably get under flight attendants’ skins more than others. The survey found the biggest gripe for 26 percent of flight attendants queried crew is passengers who click their fingers at them to get their attention. The second most annoying passenger habit (13 percent) is the scramble of passengers to leave the plane before the seat belt signs are turned off. Passengers stuffing too many bags into overhead locker received 11 percent of the negative votes, just surpassing passengers complaining there is no space for their bags in the overhead bin (10 percent). At least for the last two gripes, it appears that passengers and cabin crew are not very far apart.

Facebook may still have some short-term challenges as it must take charges against its operational results for all those shares of stocks that were given to insiders. Based on a strong earnings report last quarter,

if Facebook can post similar results in future quarters, these tax charges alone could wipe out a great deal of their income for the next year. With capital gain tax rates set to increase in 2013, we think more of these insiders may sell some of their stock by year’s end. Why does all this matter? We are recommending that our clients consider investing in Facebook stock if they can purchase it under $20 a share. There could be a lot of potential upside at these prices. It’s likely that a lot of readers in the area are retired or getting close to retirement. Many times retirees think they should not invest in individual stocks. I couldn’t disagree more. CD and bond yields are so low today that many retirees are being

forced to invest their money in other places. The stock market is a dangerous place for any investor let alone someone who is focused on a stable retirement. Considering the life expectancy of a retiree today, it’s just about impossible for someone to totally avoid investing in the stock market in some form. The crippling impact of inflation almost dictates that we all consider having some of our savings in the stock market. Even though the government tells us that inflation is low, we can’t remember ever paying so much for a gallon of gasoline or a loaf of bread as we have in 2012. Inflation is a silent thief and one of the two biggest risks to retirees. The other is adequate and affordable medical care. Please know that I do not work for any brokerage company and earn no commissions as I do not sell any products. I try to help my clients find opportunities with a favorable risk/reward ratios and Facebook has now fallen into that category. Please consult with your professional advisor before acting on anything that we might point out in any article. All investments can and do lose money at different times. There is a risk that an investor could lose all their money when they invest in individual stocks. So please give this a lot of consideration before acting on it.

From March of 2011 through March of 2012, Facebook users grew by 171 million or 26 percent. By October of 2012 (six short months later), Facebook had added another 170 million users that pushed their total subscriber base to more than one trillion. No company has ever reached that level. That’s about half of the worlds 2.5 billion Internet users. Facebook is having an impact on our society and culture like nothing before. Nearly 81 percent of Facebook users live outside the U.S. and Canada. 600 million are mobile users. New users to Facebook have an average age of 22. STARCommunity EPA Launches “SepticSmart” Prevent Costly Septic System Problems, Protect Environment WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched “SepticSmart,” a new program encouraging homeowners to take steps to maintain their home septic systems, preventing costly repairs, inconvenience and pollution to local waterways, which poses risks to public health and the environment. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 25 percent of U.S. households— more than 26 million homes—and almost onethird of new developments are serviced by septic systems. E PA launched SepticSmart to promote proper septic system care and maintenance. This national program aims to

educate homeowners about proper daily system use and the need for periodic

septic system maintenance. SepticSmart also provides industry practitioners, local governments and community organizations with tools and materials to educate their clients and residents. SepticSmart tips include: Spread out laundry and dishwasher loads throughout the day. Consider

fixing plumbing leaks and installing faucet aerators and water-efficient products. Too much water use at once can overload your system, particularly if it hasn’t been pumped in the last couple of years. Avoid pouring fats, grease and solids down the drain, which can clog your system. Homeowners should have their septic system inspected every three years by a licensed contractor and have their tank pumped when necessary, generally every three to five years. Regular inspection and pumping of a septic system can save homeowners from costly repairs—on average, it costs homeowners $250 to pump their septic system,

while the average cost of replacing a conventional septic system is $5,000 $10,000. As the holidays approach, consider having your tank inspected and pumped. Ask guests to only to put things in the toilet that belong there. Dental floss, disposable diapers and wipes, feminine hygiene products, cigarette butts, and cat litter can clog and potentially damage septic systems. Remind guests not to park or drive on your system’s drainfield because the vehicle weight could damage buried pipes or disrupt underground flow causing system backups and floods. For more information, visit www.epa. gov/septicsmart.

FREE and Confidential HIV Testing Nov. 24–25 PALM SPRINGS, CA - The Palm Springs Gay Softball League and Desert AIDS Project invite anyone wishing to get a free and confidential HIV test to visit the mobile testing unit that will be parked at Demuth Park Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 24-25 at the Palm Springs Turkey Shootout. All tests are free and confidential. No blood is drawn, since the test is conducted with a simple swab of the inside of the cheek and results are available in about 20 minutes. Testing hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Demuth Park is located on Mesquite, between El Cielo and Gene Autry Trail, where the Palm Springs Turkey Shootout will be played on six ball fields, beginning on Friday, Nov. 23. It’s estimated that one in five people infected with

10

HIV are unaware that they carry the virus. Locally, it’s estimated that nearly 2,000 people in the Coachella Valley are unaware that they are HIV-positive. HIV testing is the only way to know if you are infected.

Desert AIDS Project encourages everyone to “Know Your Status” by getting a free and confidential HIV test. “We were so encouraged at the recent Pride Festival when we tested 138 people over two days. Lots of people told us they like to periodically reassure themselves they are still HIV-negative,” said Robin Johnson, Director of

DesertSTAR

Social Services at Desert AIDS Project. “But there’s real power in knowing if you are positive as well. A study that was called the ‘breakthrough of the year’ in 2011 found conclusively that people taking medications soon after being infected with HIV are 96 percent less likely to spread the virus to others. HIV no longer has to be a death sentence but it’s important to get connected to care as soon as possible after being infected.”

Desert AIDS Project serves people living with HIV and AIDS by providing comprehensive support, including medical care, case management, and social services, like food, housing, and counseling. D.A.P. also offers free and confidential

HIV testing at a number of locations throughout the communities it serves. To learn more about Desert AIDS Project, call 760-323-2118, visit www.desertaidsproject. org or find them on Facebook, Twitter, and You Tube.

STARAt the Movies ‘Rise of the Guardians’

A Perfect Holiday Treat for the Entire Family When I think of Christmas I still remember Dad telling us Santa would like a glass of Schnapps rather than milk to keep him warm on his cold holiday flight, after all we were in Ohio and we usually had snow by Dec. 25. Mom always left cookies which “Santa” always managed to eat, leaving crumbs on the plate to prove he was there. One night my little sisters and I even heard a loud “Ho! Ho! Ho!” that echoed up to our bedrooms and we all knew it had to be Santa. “Rise of the Guardians” captures those

warm cozy memories of childhood when we believed in magical beings like Santa, the Easter Bunny and of course the Tooth Fairy. The film also adds the fears of our youth in the form of the Boogeyman (voiced by Jude Law). Another fun-loving myth from the past is Jack Frost and as this engaging, beautifully animated 3D film begins, snowflakes come spiraling into our faces and lacy icy designs decorate the screen. Jack (Chris Pine) is a young boy with frost colored hair who loves to play tricks and make

children happy, but even as he mixes with people, no one sees him because no one believes he is actually real. This is not the case with Santa (voiced with great gusto by Alec Baldwin) who lives and works at the North Pole, creating fantastic new toys every year to delight the children of the world. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a crisis arises as youngsters all over the planet fall under a dark spell created by a dark spirit named Pitch, aka the Boogeyman. He has begun to turn happy dreams into nightmares which are

personified by pitch black horses made of filmy dark smoke. These frightening wisps of terror invade childish dreams. Soon young boys and girls stop believing in the Guardians of youthful joy as they give in to their unhappy fears about everything. To avert this crisis all of the holiday Super Heroes come together at the request of the Man in the Moon. This also includes the Sand Man who provides sweet dreams and the beautiful Tooth Fairy. As the heroes of happiness converge they unanimously attribute the universal catastrophe to Pitch, aka the Boogeyman, and they are right. Then, through a special portal, they are joined by Jack Frost who was sent to join them by the Man in the Moon. Mystified, Jack and all of the other heroes wonder

why he has been called to join in the “Quest” to save holiday joy. At this point, Santa takes Jack into his gigantic work room where he tells the boy there has to be a reason he has been summoned to join the Guardians. As they talk privately Santa encourages Jack to look deep inside to find his center. For Santa that core is “Wonder” which inspires him to work tirelessly for 364 days a year in order to envision

holiday magic that will remain in the human heart long past childhood. The animation, crafted by artists from around the world, is whimsical, colorful and imaginative, filled with images like lacy patterns that frost windows, trees and ponds and the colorful Easter Island workshop of the 6 foot tall Easter Bunny (voiced by Hugh Jackman). The little kid in all of us will relate as the playful Jack Frost takes a group of children on a whirlwind adventure over the icy streets of a small Midwestern town in the USA. Tiny elf like creatures dressed in red also provide lots of laughter and personality to the story as they scurry around the North Pole, but the big surprise is who really does all of the hard work along with Santa. The film is rated PG for some scary action caused by Pitch and his dark minions, but little ones who don’t scare easily will enjoy the fright. DVD Update: Holiday shoppers, be advised that “The Dark Knight Rises” comes to Blu-ray and DVD on Dec. 4. This too is a superhero movie (from Warner Bros). It is definitely on the dark side, but it will make a perfect holiday gift.

DHS to Create ‘New Parade Memories’ DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – The 2012 Desert Hot Springs Holiday Parade entry forms and packet are now available and this year’s parade committee has made it really easy for everyone to participate. “We are looking forward to a really nice event,” said Joe McKee, this year’s parade chairman. “The committee has been working hard and all that’s left is for people to show up for a really good time.” McKee said the committee has already signed up marching bands, car clubs, community groups and residents planning to enter floats. “If you ever wanted to be in a parade, it could not be easier,” said McKee. “Sign up sheets are at the Visitor Center. There is a small fee for businesses that want to enter but for just about everyone else there is no charge to enter.” This year’s parade marks the 25th anniversary of the Desert Hot Springs Parade and the return of the parade to the city after a four year break. The parade route follows Desert Hot Springs holiday tradition with a march down Palm Drive. Making this year’s parade possible are several

corporate and other sponsors, including Desert Valley Disposal, Wintec, Mission Springs Water District and Miracle Springs Resort & Spa. The parade will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 and will travel Palm Drive from Desert View Avenue to Two Bunch Palms Trail and ending in the Kmart center. ‘It has been a lot of work to make this parade possible and with so many people volunteering to help it is hard to mention them all,” said McKee. “I really look forward to see the parade floats I hear are in the works.” If you would like to be in the parade, there is still plenty of time to decorate your golf cart or pick up, turn your garden trailer into a float or polish up your classic car. The last day to register is Dec. 12. But, the 2012 Holiday Parade will be limited to the first 100 entries and McKee recommends registering early to insure a place in the parade. The deadline to register for the Christmas Parade is Monday, Nov. 26. AutomotiveSTAR 2013 MINI Roadster Two-Seater Is All About Open-Top Fun Of all the six models of MINI vehicles, by far the most fun and cool is the soft-top roadster - described by MINI as “a devilishly fast soft top built for two.” It’s all that - and much more. We are now eleven years since the re-introduction of the MINI to the US market, and the BMW-owned British brand has established itself as a byword for infectious driving fun within compact dimensions and earned itself a growing community of fans. Which was already quite large considering the cult following of the original little MINI’s. I’ve driven both the oldschool MINI Cooper, and this new model is every bit

a kick in the pants to drive as the oldie is. It’s much like driving a very fast shifter gocart, it sticks to the ground, loves tight and fast turns, and will turn any frown immediately upside-down (while the car remains upright and poised). The MINI Roadster is a sporty driving experience of pure and spontaneous opentop fun for two. Its smileinducing agility, compact dimensions and low fuel consumption make it one of the best road trip cars that also converts even the daily commute to an entertaining event. The body design of the two-seater MINI carries on with the design language

of the brand’s cars, but repackaged within the proportions of a compact roadster. Parallel lines, athletically taut surfaces and harmonious curves combine with a distinctive, lowslung silhouette to give the MINI Roadster an elegantly stretched figure. You’ll easily spot MINI characteristics, such as its large circular headlights, hexagonal radiator grille, side indicator surrounds and vertically stacked rear lights. However, the Roadster also adds some distinguishing features of its own to the mix, including a stepped boot extending from behind the passenger compartment and a heavily raked windscreen. All that

2013 Mini Roadster said, the roadster looks its best with top down. S t y l i s t i c a l l y, t h e soft-top roof of the MINI Roadster follows in the classic British roadster tradition. When opened, it folds down flat behind the seats, keeping the car’s sweeping lines intact. This

The safety equipment on board the new MINI Roadster also includes front airbags and head-thorax airbags integrated into the outer sides of the seat backrests, three-point inertia-reel seatbelts including belt force limiters and belt tensioners, and a tire defect indicator. The model line-up ranges from the MINI Cooper Roadster (121-hp) to the MINI Cooper S Roadster (181-hp) to the sharpest performer of all, the MINI John Cooper Works Roadster, whose powerplant develops 208-hp. Rivals include the Audi TT roadster and Volkswagen Beetle convertible. Pricing starts at $25,850. for the Cooper convertible, $29,250. for the Cooper S Roadster (tested), and $36,000. for the John Cooper Works model. Three of the veterans attended the graduation ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Whitewater campus of Guide Dogs of the Desert. All five graduates are veterans of military service: two Army veterans, a Marine veteran, a Navy veteran and a veteran of service in Nigeria crossed the stage in a special ceremony honoring their service and well as their new-found independence through life with a guide dog. Three of the five – Smart Eze of Eichgraben, Austria; Robert Silva of Indio, CA; Ronald Hudson of Ogden, UT and their dogs trained together at the Whitewater campus for 28 days. John Lee Taylor of Longmont, CO and James Faust of Beloit, WI were trained in their home environments. While at the Guide Dogs of the Desert training center, the blind vets learned to walk with their dogs in residential areas, negotiate heavily traveled areas with traffic, cross streets, ride buses and light rail, use stairways, elevators, and escalators, and maneuver through crowded hotels, restaurants and shopping malls. Drivers

CarFit crew on the obstacle course PALM DESERT, CA - Supervisor John J. Benoit partnered with the Riverside County Office on Aging to host a CarFit event for older drivers at Sun City Palm Desert on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Mountain View Clubhouse Parking Lot located at 38-180 Del Webb Blvd. CarFit was developed by the American Society on Aging to help senior drivers learn how the effects of aging change the way they fit in their vehicles and how their driving can be affected. More than 30 older drivers received free 20-minute personal CarFit reviews. Driving specialists helped drivers focus on things they could do to improve safety and comfort while driving their vehicle, and make sure that mirrors, seatbelts and foot pedals are adjusted in the right place to improve the vision of the road and of other cars. “The CarFit initiative helps older adults become safer and more comfortable behind the wheel,” said Supervisor Benoit. With a growing population of senior citizens in Riverside County, events like these are important to enhancing their independence in our community.” There will be no driving tests administered at CarFit. Supervisor Benoit addressed drivers, volunteers, Office on Aging staff and the media. Supervisor John J. Benoit represents the Fourth District on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors stretching from Palm Springs south to the Salton Sea and east to the Colorado River and is the largest geographical district in the county.

How To Organize In recent weeks I have been studying the writings of Shad Helmstetter, a Florida psychologist engaged in teaching the best tools for personal growth, financial success and flourishing happiness. His methods are simple to use, specific, clear and extremely effective. They include positive selftalk, active goal-setting and action planning. I recommend any of Helmstetter’s books and particularly “What To Say When You Talk To Yourself.” His self-talk program is based on the most recent science of how the human brain receives and accepts information. Following is one of Helmstetter’s positive selftalk scripts for organizing one’s thoughts, time and activities in ways that help a person reach their goals. He suggests reading a script like this three or four times a day for three weeks, silently or voiced. He states that a lesser time of repetition may not sufficiently program the subconscious mind into achieving the desired behavioral changes. He also suggests recording the script with a portable tape recorder and then listening

STARBody, Mind & Spirit

Horoscope Healthy Nov. 22 - 29, 2012 November 22- Sun Into Sagittarius

Most Affected are Sagittarius and All Fire Signs. The month will begin in the sign of Sagittarius, for Vedic – Scorpio. For Sagittarius: All Jupiter themes such as opportunity, expansion, honesty, leadership, higher learning, tremendous vision and elevation will rule supreme this month until Dec. 22. A more heightened awareness of optimism, awareness itself, to see beyond the immediate. The best side of Sagittarius is seen in their teaching manner done in “their own way”. The key is to not be so benevolent, to know when to let go by leaving justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Celebrate this month with respect, action with and towards Fire around you, Fire within you; experience the transformational power of Fire in your 3rd Chakra by practicing Yoga, Solar-Plex, Core techniques. Best Sacred Geometry: Tetrahedron (Fire). Best Yantra: The colors Indigo Blue and Violet.

November 26 – Mercury Goes Direct

Most Affected are Sagittarius, Gemini and Virgo. For All Signs: This transit began on Nov. 6 and now comes to an end, a shift towards re-direction. As Mercury begins direct motion, its’ cycle begins slowly then it picks up speed. In about a week or so things begin to feel more balanced in matters related to communications, the written, typed, tweeted, text word, travel, energy and electromagnetic energy related to your neurological system. You can now go forward with new agreements or signing

important documents. Expect some fall out from this recent MIR, meaning, some things were not meant to last, it is best to accept the changes and move on. The best offering in understanding the aftermath is to see the opportunities from this retrograde that may have held you down, slowed you down and perhaps changed you for the better. Best Meditation Mudra: Buddha, (Mercury, thumb over the 5th finger).

Nov. 28 – Full Moon – Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

Most affected are Gemini and All Air Signs. For Gemini: The Moon is in your sign and it is a Super Full Moon that will bring changes. See yourself change for the better with your priorities in focus. As Gemini is represented in the 5th Chakra, (the throat) you should honor and appreciate the new you who can begin to see the difference in others voices, speech and actions. You can also appreciate the differences between sound and silence. With Jupiter still in your sign, expect some fortunate news that can expand your options. For All Signs: A Lunar Eclipse is a super-Full Moon. This Lunar Eclipse has super intensity and it brings transformation. We need to question our doubts and remember who we truly are; by the choices that you make, either you are spiritual royalty or you are something less. A

better choice would be to live in truth, remember your soul’s purpose. From a threedimensional point of view, we live in dualistic thought, from a higher-dimensional view, everything is connected and everyone is a part of the bigger picture. Most of humanity is ready to move into a heartcentered paradigm. The practice of primordial meditation and vocal mantras, chanting or a simple call for help is what is best now. Best Mantra: HAM / HUM Best Colors: Light Blue or Indigo Blue.

On-Going Affects: Uranus Retrograde

Most affected are Aquarius. This transit began on July 12 and will continue until Dec. 13. For Aquarius: Your ruling planet is retrograde; the energies are inward. Refrain from displaying negative emotions in front of others. Your best answers will come from within, not always from outside. For All Signs: We need to continue to review some of our ideas, especially if it involves the off-beat, the unusual or the collective group. The revolution continues a little more quietly; rather than hurling it in the faces of others, it turns inward, reaching for inner freedom from psychological limits. Occupy your inner wisdom, your third-eye.

Venus In Scorpio

Most Affected are Scorpio, Libra and Taurus. (This includes Libra and Taurus, as the planet Venus is their ruling sign) This transit began on Nov. 21 and will continue until Dec. 15. For Scorpio: Great News! The planet of Love and beauty is in your sign; you may now enjoy your new popularity

and the good possibility of romantic interests. If you are already involved, this can be a very romantic or creative time for you, one of the best times of the year for your love Life. However, when Venus is in any sign of the Zodiac, the senses are heightened as well. Exercise and refresh yourself: Take yourself to an art gallery or museum. Walk and enjoy the beauty of the season. The signs of Libra and Taurus may figure more prominently. For Libra: You may feel an emotional shift as your planet enters the water sign of Scorpio. Try to go with the flow of the changes that are beneficial in your Life; there is beauty in the mysterious and the unknown. For Taurus: Your sexuality may get a boost with intensity as an established relationship can go to the next level. If single, you have a choice to delve into the unseen, unexplored or you can channel those energies into meaningful creativity. For All Signs: In our relationships, the term “A little pain, a little gain” may feel much more intense now. If you were one to let go and let God, then expect to see justice occur by natural forces. If not, obsessing over a relationship will only bring more suffering and wrinkles. Be an outstanding example, turn off the dramas, quiet the tweets, texts, the emails and just be. When in doubt, practice silence.

etc…STAR Workers Compensation

Benefits to Rise 30 Percent? By Jackie Devereaux Statewide, CA – Injured workers suffering under a plagued workers compensation insurance system may find some relief now that the governor signed Senate Bill 863 into law, bringing some much-needed reforms to the beleaguered insurance industry. SB 863 represents a historic compromise between employers and employees that provides a rare opportunity to both increase benefits for injured workers and reduce insurance costs for employers. SB 863 provides consistency and certainty in a ballooning $16 billion workers’ compensation system. By reducing administrative costs and closing loopholes to eliminate conflicts of interest and price gouging. The bill provides for financing a longoverdue permanent disability benefit increase for injured workers. This benefit increase is estimated to be more than $700 million and will translate into a 30 percent increase in permanent disability benefits for all categories of injured workers. This legislation also creates a $120 million catastrophic injury program that is designed to enhance the benefits for the small group of injured employees whose permanent disability ratings are disproportionately low as compared to their earnings loss due to the injury. By establishing a binding independent medical review (IMR) system to use evidencebased medical principles to resolve medical disputes this reform shortens the timeline for approval of treatment to 30 days, greatly speeding up the courts process that can currently take up to two years. SB 863 represents a

balanced approach to issues within the California’s workers’ compensation system. It provides employers with cost-saving proposals that reduce frictional costs while providing injured workers with much-needed benefit increases. Additionally, the administration has committed to an expeditious regulatory process that seeks to achieve the full extent of the projected savings associated with SB 863. The bill was drafted by Democratic State Senator Kevin De León of the 22nd District representing Los Angeles. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. commended the Legislature for “an extraordinary workers’ compensation reform bill that helps injured workers and averts an imminent crisis of skyrocketing rates. Again, Republicans have joined Democrats to work together— perhaps, a portent of good things to come,” he said. CalChamber recognizes that the California workers’ compensation system was on an unsustainable trajectory. In particular, cost pressures in the system mitigated much of the savings realized in the

last round of reforms. As a result, California employers’ premiums were increasing as the overall cost of the system continued to rise. “CalChamber believes that benefits for some injured workers to be inadequate and, therefore, supports a benefit increase where appropriate.” SB 863 addresses both of these issues: it offers proposals that reduce system costs in order to offset a benefit increase; it specifically addresses the lien epidemic; it shortens the medical-legal process; it implements an independent medical review system, and streamlines the permanent disability schedule. These reforms reduce frictional costs by reducing delays in the system and litigation. Additionally, the bill provides injured workers an increase in permanent disability benefits. Anyone with an open claim or in litigation with a Workers’ Compensation insurance company, should consider these new reforms before settling their case. It could mean the difference of a 30 percent increase in the benefits paid.

JOSHUA TREE, CA - The Joshua Tree Retreat Center at the Institute of Mentalphysics will host a community drum circle celebrating the Full Moon from 7 – 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Well-known Joshua Tree percussionist Sam Sloneker will facilitate the gathering, which will be held in the center’s Friendship Hall. “Well, we have plunged more deeply into fall here in the desert, bringing us some definitely cooler temperatures, and I’m looking forward to our drumming together beneath the energy of November’s Full Moon,” said Sloneker. “The polarity effect created by the Sun and Moon pulling in opposing directions with Earth in the middle can bring on a period of intense energy and precarious balance, and playing together in our circle can help to ground and center us during this time of heightened energies.

“This event will kickoff our fifth year of monthly community drum circles at the Retreat Center. It offers us a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with ourselves, and with each other, as we round the bend and head toward the coming of winter and the holiday season. As we’re so near Thanksgiving, the theme of our circle will be gratitude. Our drum circles are always lots of fun, so come and play with us in celebration of this special time of aliveness and vibrancy, and invite your family and friends to join in our celebration.” Studies have shown participation in group drumming to offer a number of worthwhile benefits, including artistic self-expression, community connection and interaction, an expanded sense of self and heightened sense of belonging, increased rapport with others, relief of stress,

emotional balancing, and strengthening of the immune system. Participants are encouraged to bring drums, shakers, tambourines, etc. A number of instruments will also be available at the event. There is no charge to attend, though a suggested donation of $5 per participant or $10 per family will be welcomed and appreciated. The Joshua Tree Retreat Center is located at 59700 Twentynine Palms Hwy. in Joshua Tree, on the north side of the Highway, just east of the intersection of La Contenta Rd./Yucca Mesa Rd. Turn right after entering the Center and take the first left; Friendship Hall will be on your left toward the middle of the long building (follow the signs). balance sheet to operating in the black. In reality, it’s the last three months of the year and not just the one day that merchants rely on for strong retail sales. This year, as we celebrate the season and Thanksgiving with our families, you’re encouraged to give some thought to how and where you shop. It really does matter – especially

to authentically local businesses benefits you and the town in a number of important ways. Consider this: Shopping local creates jobs. Shops in our town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy, fueling the economic health of the community. More of every dollar spent at a local business stays in the town. It’s more than

shops and services in small towns but don’t equate this with how they spend their money. It’s a lot like imagining how you’d pay our mortgage if you lost your income. It’s that real, and that close to the success of every local business. Shopping locally retains our distinctiveness. Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond

survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service. And if you’re not satisfied – chances are the person across the counter is empowered to make things right. Shopping local saves services. Private and public services cluster around shops. As shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants and other businesses. This clustering that we enjoy in our town is so successful that it’s created in artificial environments called malls. The backbone of all of this

shopping variety and excitement is the genuine, authentic small business. “Small Business Saturday” celebrates small business and the contribution to the health of our local and national economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there were nearly 28 million small businesses in the United States last year. Over the past two decades, they created 65 percent of net new jobs. Their importance to local communities extends even further. For every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community

through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. Small business is the engine of job creation in the US economy. By thinking first of local, small business, you are making a direct contribution to the health of the community. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the glue that holds communities together – so this year, as we all celebrate the season and think about where and why we’re going to shop – shop first locally - at a small business.

in today’s economy. We often hear “shop local,” and “shop small,” but what does that really mean, and how does it have a direct positive impact on you? We’ll answer some of those questions, and give you some shopping food for thought: First, it’s important to identify and understand exactly what “local” means. Today, as national media and big box retailers struggle to survive – “local” has become a fashionable marketing catchphrase. But local isn’t scalable. Local isn’t any nationallyknown brand, even if it has a locally convenient location. Local means your neighbors, who also own and operate a real business in your town. It’s the kind of local business that you’d first talk about when explaining our town to distant relatives, it’s the business you’d miss most if they were gone. Shopping local – authentically local – means you’re investing in your own quality of life. When shopping “locally,” try to distinguish between large national brands that operate a locally convenient business, and those that are authentically local - meaning home-grown, home-spun, homeowned, all that. Directing your shopping dollars

www.desertstarweekly.com

a cliché to say that shopping local creates jobs – and the job you save may be your own. Local independent shops invest more in our communities. Local businesses are proportionally more generous in their support of local charities, schools, and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial contribution to your community. Local shops sell great products at affordable prices. Some people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products available. A great example of this is Haidet’s Hardware, on Pierson Blvd., in Desert Hot Springs, and they routinely beat and match prices of other bigger stores – and they carry thousands of separate “SKU’s” (units of merchandise, including varying sizes, colors, etc). And what they don’t carry – they’ll get it, and fast. Shopping locally saves you time and money. You travel less, saving on time and fuel. With fuel prices over $3.90 per gallon, a five-mile round trip in the average car will likely cost you more than what you think you might be saving – not to mention lost time. Shopping locally retains our communities. People don’t like losing

more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet changing population needs. In our community – we have a bigger diversity of local shops than most small towns our size. Shopping locally saves the environment. Local shops often stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods that do not require long-distance transportation, helping to reduce our global footprint. Plus, you’ll travel less and use less fuel getting to large shopping centers. Look around our town – closely – and you’ll be surprised at the goods that are sources so close to home. Local shops are for everyone. Most people can get to their local shops easily. This is especially important for the elderly, young people and others who rely on public transportation. A stroll through downtown and surrounding areas are full of shopping opportunities that many people travel from far away to get to – and wish they had – in their own town. Shopping here preserves that. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys show people get better customer care and service locally. These businesses

Succulents for the

Part 2

Desert Environment By Chris Hermann, ASLA, CLARB Certified Landscape Architect In addition to small succulents that are used in bowls or rock gardens, there are hundreds of larger succulents that grow in the Coachella Valley; many of them are used in desert landscaping designs. The larger species of succulents, especially many of the agaves, are good choices for mid-century style architecture because their shape and form help reinforce a geometrical plan. In the contemporary planting below there is Agave americana “Variegata”, Hesperaloeparviflora, Ocotillo (not of the succulent family) and Pachycereusmarginatus. The agavaceaefamily includes approximately 19 genera and 550 species, mostly growing in dry, warm regions of the western hemisphere and many native to Mexico. This makes agaves a great choice here in the Coachella Valley. The most recognizable member of the family is agaveamericana, also known as century

Agave Medio plan. The leaves have a thick epidermis and cuticle to prevent water loss. The way the leaves are structures on the upper surface makes it so that even the slightest rainfall is direct toward the roots of the plant. After 10

or unbranched trunk topped with a circle of strap-shape leaves to 1 ft. long and 1-4” wide. It may reach 18 ft tall and 5 ft. wide. Large, old plants may bloom in summer, bearing lightly fragrant trumpet-shaped white flowers to 2 in. across; smaller younger plants seldom bloom. It can be kept as a house plant year round. They stay in the same pots for years; they grow better when their roots are crowded.

If we have a particularly cold winter, you may want to protect your succulents from frost, as many are frost tender.

agave mediopicta. Other agave family members include: agave geminiflora agave angustifolia, agave parryii, agave Victoriaer e g i n a e , a n d a g av e desmettiana. All provide a strong form and statement in your landscape. Not all, however, can take full sun. And here is a surprise plant that many people

years or more a branched, 15-40 foot stalk appears. This is the agave’s single reproductive act, after which time it will die. There are a couple varieties of agave americana, including agave americana variegate and

think is a palm or a cactus, but actually, it is considered a succulent – Pachypodiumlamerei – Madagascar palm. This easy to grow shrub has an impressive silhouette: spiny, succulent branched

Here in our desert environment, be mindful of placing succulents where they will have to bear the extreme heat of our summers. While succulents will do well in just about any placement during “the season,” most succulents will need protection from the summer sun. Keep in mind, too, the shifting of sun exposures. The sun your yard receives in November may be different than the sun it receives in July. Many snowbirds are surprised to

come back to the desert after leaving a lovely garden in May to find that plants were sizzled during the summer. If you’re going to place succulents in a full sun environment during season, it is best to put them in pots so that you can relocate them for the summer. Another solution is to tent the succulents with shade cloth during the hot summer months. Succulents like fast draining soil. If you will be potting your succulents, it is best to use cactus mix instead of potting soil. Keep in mind that while most succulents are drought-tolerant, prolonged periods without water will cause their leaves to shrivel, drop or lose color. If you are placing your succulents near plants that need more water, position the succulents at a higher elevation so that the water drains away from the root system. When feeding, one light feeding at the start of the growth season is enough for most succulents. Plants in pots may benefit from additional fertilization. Chris Hermann is part owner of Aunt Effie’s Gardens in Palm Springs which is located at 2393 N. Palm Canyon Drive. He has been a landscape architect for 30 years and is also a CLARB certified landscape architect. Additionally, Chris heads up Hermann Design.
