structures, volunteer programs and various revenue goals.

“Cabot’s Museum is the premier cultural asset this city has to offer visitors,” said Rick Daniels, Desert Hot Springs City Manager and one of the participants. The sessions were facilitated by the firm Technology of Participation (TOP), who kept all gathered on task and will provide a formal

report to the Board at a future date. All costs were absorbed by the Cabot Foundation. The sessions were divided into exercises that culminated in all the information being compiled into tasks that subgroups were then assigned to work on over the next 12 month period.

“This was so important to gather this group around one table to bring about a common vision for the future of the Museum and Cabot’s dream for our community,” said Lorraine Becker, immediate past president and another member of the group.

Another topic on the final day was reviewing the Miracle Hill plan for the area around Cabot’s Museum, as well as the Museum’s role within the “Sand to Snow” national monument plan being currently championed

COACHELLA VALLEY, CA – After a quick Sales Tax Receipts Comparison for the Second Quarter of 2012 to the Second Quarter of 2011, it’s apparent that business is up in the Coachella Valley with Desert Hot Springs and Indio scoring the biggest growth.

DHS sales tax is up 19 percent and Indio scored the second highest in growth at 14.2 percent while Riverside County scored 9.2 percent growth with a 7.5 percent growth rate for the entire state.

Desert Hot Springs is growing fast. Its business has nearly tripled the county rate and doubled the state growth rate.

The 19 percent growth in taxable retail sales represents $340,448 in revenue during just the 2nd Quarter of 2012, up $54,323 from the same quarter last year. The increases were led by a 74 percent increase in business and industry, 37 percent increase in fuel, and 27 percent increase in Autos and Supplies Major Industry Groups.

With the adjustment for two closed restaurants all Seven Major Industry Groups consisting of 540 retail businesses increased. The City’s Sales Tax Receipts has increased 70 percent since 2nd Quarter 2009. While that number is

impressive, the per capita sales has doubled during that same time period. More people are shopping locally than ever before.

The actual increase in sales tax receipts is $56,305 higher than was forecast for this quarter. The 2010-11 total of $1,025,184 for the same quarters grew by $257,423 to $1,282,606 in 2011-12 or 25 percent during last year. The growth in this last quarter puts the City on a path that could increase another 21 percent during this current fiscal year.

What does this mean? The City of Desert Hot Springs continues to lead the Coachella Valley and is in the top tier of sales tax revenue growth in the fastest growing county in Southern California as a result of more retail purchases within the city.

More people are spending more per person in the city. Business creation is increasing within existing businesses. The groundbreaking last week for the new Dollar General, new YK (10 room) Spa, and other pending retail announcements will only increase the economic expansion in region.

The city’s Economic Development Strategic Plan and public-private and regional partnerships are working,” said City Manager Rick Daniels.

“It is a good day to be a business in Desert Hot Springs. There is still significant untapped purchasing power in the city,” he added.

Boxer Addresses Seniors About Medicare Issue PALM SPRINGS, CA – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) spoke to seniors at the Mizell Senior Center Friday, Oct. 12 about the need to protect Medicare and Medicaid to ensure that current and future seniors will get the health care they need.

Before Medicare was enacted in 1965, the majority of seniors had no health insurance and one-third of seniors lived in poverty. Today, nearly all seniors have access to Medicare and senior citizen poverty has been cut in half.

Obama’s efforts to strengthen the program as well as the House Republican budget, which would turn Medicare into a voucher system that would not keep up with the rising costs of health care and leave seniors stuck paying about $6,000 a year out of their own pockets.

STAROpinion Congressional Race Tighter Than Ever Undecided and Independents Hold Swing Votes

By Jackie Devereaux, Editor-in-Chief The congressional race for the 45th district is tighter than ever before and Desert Hot Spring voters along with “Undecided’s” and “Independents” will cast the deciding votes in this hotly contested race between Mary Bono Mack and Dr. Raul Ruiz.

Republican Congresswoman Bono Mack, wife of Connie Mack IV, who is also running for the U.S. Senate in Florida, both find themselves fighting for their political careers for the first time since taking office. And one has to wonder what will happen if they both lose their races?

Will they live in Florida or in California? Critics claim that neither of them lives in their electoral states. Floridians claim the couple spends all their time in California while Californians claim the Mack’s live in Florida. And how can one spouse represent one state and the other spouse represent another state on the opposite coast? I don’t get this picture at all.

One local staunch Republican, an attorney who wishes to remain anonymous, told me that he thought Bono Mack appeared desperate during the debate and that her performance destroyed her credibility. She immediately went on the attack mode during her opening statement which is traditionally designed for thanking everyone for being there, for thanking the host, and for welcoming a chance to debate the issues. Instead, Bono Mack lashed out at her opponent Democrat Dr. Raul Ruiz calling him un-American.

I have always been a strong supporter of women in business and government, but even I thought it was shocking to see her act that way. I don’t think I’m alone. I was raised a Republican, heck my parents held Ronald Reagan’s first fundraiser in our back yard in Simi Valley when he ran for president of the Screen Actors Guild. I’ve switched parties a number of times over the years, and most of my life my voting record has been split. I vote for some Republicans and some Democrats. I vote for some liberal issues and some right wing issues, and I think I’m more typical of voters these days. I know many voting experts think that people generally vote along party lines, and that may have been true in the past. It’s not anymore.

With mass media, the Internet and social networks, people’s opinions are all across the board.

For those of us that consider ourselves Free Thinkers and not tied to any political party, I’m here to report that Bono Mack turned me off in a big way. Our congressional seat is not a slam dunk like in the last election where she beat Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet by nine percent and beat Julie Bornstein by 16 percent two elections ago.

With congressional district boundary changes, the City of Desert Hot Springs finds itself as a major player in this election with the capacity to sway the election toward Dr.

Also, according to the Registrar of Voters in Riverside County, more than 17 percent of those registered to vote are “Independents,” and with the “Undecided Voters” that leaves a lot of swing votes.

I found our congressional debate to be caustic, acerbic and out of character for a woman I previously thought was a good choice for Congress.

How can her attack of Dr. Ruiz’s Thanksgiving Day protest against the poor treatment of Native American Indians at Plymouth Rock back in 1997 when he was at Harvard Medical School be taken seriously? How can she point the finger at Dr. Ruiz when her husband has a record of bar room brawls and road rage dating from 1987 through 1992?

I did some fact checking and found a website called Politico. It says this about one commercial from Mack’s opponent Bill Nelson: “Florida, meet Connie Mack IV. A promoter for Hooters with a history of bar room brawling, altercations and road rage. A big spender with a trail of debts, liens and unpaid bills. He has one of the worst attendance records in Congress this year but he still voted to end Medicare as we know it. Questionable work habits.

Another Florida ad found on Politico: “Connie Mack’s Hooters connection…Mack, his political action committee and his wife U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif., received nearly $50,000 in donations from Hooters management during their time in office.”

HOOTERS? Are they kidding me? A guy who promotes Hooters is running for the U.S. Senate in Florida and he’s got an arrest record for road rage and bar brawls, and his wife is an incumbent for the past 14 years in the Congress? What’s wrong with this picture? My anonymous Republican lawyer also said that if he had paid someone $10 million for 14 years on the job and had Bono Mack’s’ record, he’d fire them.

I wonder why Dr. Ruiz never brought up her husband’s arrest record in Florida. The same Politico website revealed that in 1989 “Mack was arrested in a Jacksonville nightclub called Bananas by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy after an altercation inside the club. Mack called the arrest a misunderstanding and pleaded no contest. The judge withheld adjudication, meaning he has no criminal record.

The report was sealed by court order but Mack was later involved in litigation that brought the incident to light.”

Again, in February 1992, “Mack was involved in a bar brawl with professional baseball player Ron Gant at an Atlanta bar called Calico Jack’s.” The Miami Herald reported: “A waitress testified that Mack, who had been heavily drinking beer and Jagermeister shots all night, October 18, 2012

took the first swing at Gant. Mack testified he couldn’t remember how much beer he drank, but said he had only one liquor shot — of tequila. Gant claims a drunken Mack repeatedly bumped into him, precipitating a fight. Mack claims Gant attacked him for no reason. During the melee, Gant head-locked Mack. Mack testified that he couldn’t breathe. So he starting striking and grabbing the ball player’s crotch. At a certain point, the club’s bouncers got involved and Mack broke his ankle. He sued Gant, who was held liable. But a jury awarded no damages. There exists a court document in which Mack describes that incident at length.”

Politico notes another 1988 road rage incident that came to light in 1996 during the deposition involving the Gant case. This all makes a thinking person reason that maybe Connie Mack IV’s youthful anger issues may have spilled over into his wife’s campaign. Has Bono Mack changed from the dutiful wife of our region’s beloved Sonny Bono? Does Chaz Bono support his step mom? During the debate Bono Mack said she has a “relationship” with her transgender step son but that the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the courts! Is she for real? How can she expect to win the election without the gay vote? I see a conflict here.

You decide on Nov. 6 because your vote counts in the 45th congressional race.

Presidential Debate is not just fair, it is right on the money! It does mean that there are still smart people in America who cannot be fooled and who can discern between facts and fiction. SHORTFEST at the ACE

By Frances Allen STAGECOACH MUSIC FESTIVAL If the names Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band mean nothing to you then the announcement of the program lineup for Stagecoach, the massive country music festival, to be held Apr. 27-29, in Indio will also draw a yawn. However, if you are one of the ardent fans of country music, than the roster of 2013 Stagecoach event will make you want to put on your barn-dance boots and try to make reservations in a local hotel prior to their, and Stagecoach itself, being sold out.

Spread over three days, Stagecoach brings hundreds of top-of-the-chart performers to the Desert, including the three names at the top of the bill, plus the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Dwight Yoakum, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charley Pride.

Three-day general admission passes, which are available on line as of 10 a.m.

Oct. 20, cost $239, and the producers say that unlike past festivals, the price is all

RANCHO MIRAGE 2013 SPEAKER SERIES On a slightly less musical note, the City of Rancho Mirage has announced that Jack “I-sang-for-a-reducedsentence” Abramoff; Debbie “America’s acting and musical sweetheart” Reynolds; and, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin make up the lineup for the city’s 2013 Speakers Series.

Abramoff will speak on Jan. 30, Reynolds on Feb. 27, and Kearns Goodwin on March 27.

Individual tickets are $60 for preferred seating and $45 for general admission. Series tickets and admission to afterparties with the speakers are available at additional costs.

Do you have a short attention span? The Palm Springs International Film Society and Ace Hotel & Swim Club have announced a new monthly screening event, called ShortFest at the ACE. sessions focused on teaching players the strategies needed to win at No-Limit Hold ‘em tournaments. Some of these sessions are for novices, while others are equivalent to learning the game of poker at a post-graduate level. And, like sending your children away for the summer, each camp is expensive, costing several thousands of dollars.

Of course, the boot camps are held in casinos so there are always more traditional ways to try to cover your camp entry fees. Now, if only I could remember if a full house beats a flush.

INDIO POWWOW It’s not often we get to go back in time for even a short period, much less a backwardlooking journey spanning nearly four centuries.

However, what could be more appropriate this November than a colorful gathering of Native Americans, and the rest of us, to reprise some of the color and goodwill of the first thanksgiving festival when the Wampanoag Indians joined their pilgrim neighbors to celebrate the pilgrims’ first successful harvest in the New Land?

Historically, Native North American tribes have come together annually to trade, socialize and honor feats of bravery and achievement.

These gatherings, called Powwows, take place throughout the year, but the Fall gatherings are particularly well-attended, especially when they celebrated a successful harvest; bringing people together to feast, dance, sing and hold ceremonies.

This year, the 31st annual Indio Powwow, to be held Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 23-25, at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino’s Special Events Center, will bring thousands

of tribal and non-tribal people together for a celebration of culture and customs.

Visitors to the Indio Powwow will have an opportunity to taste Native American food such as Indian fry bread and shop among vendors for jewelry, weavings and other types of Native American Indian art.

Highlights of the event include Bird Singers and the colorful Grand Entry, when all the dancers form a procession winding around the arena.

The Indio Powwow is

a rich part of the culture of the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians and, as with the first thanksgiving gathering in 1621, everyone is invited and admission is free.

The powwow opens on Friday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m., with the not-to-be-missed Grand Entry scheduled for 8 p.m.

Saturday, the festivities start at 11 a.m. with the Grand Entry scheduled for 1 p.m. and at 8 p.m. Sunday the powwow gets underway at 11:00 a.m., with the Grand Entry at 1 p.m.

Oktoberfest Big Success Palm Springs held its first annual Oktoberfest on the corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way and Palm Canyon Drive on Saturday, Oct. 13. The event was adjacent to the Marilyn Monroe statue and near downtown Palm Springs businesses. More than 40 beer, wine and food tastings booths operated from noon to 6 p.m.

Cougarazz Rock an all girl Band and Bavarian Stew German band entertained the crowd. Entrance fee included a free tasting and souvenier glass.

The event benefitted CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates ), the Jim and Janet Cook in costume Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce and Les Dames d,Escoffier for female chefs scholarships.

TravelSTAR Venice To Alaska Getting To Trans-Atlantic away Cruises

Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy For centuries, Venice has been one of the most romantic cities in Europe. This is particularly true in the autumn, when humidity has disappeared, the soft glow of ancient lamps are turned on earlier in the afternoons and the large number of tourists, with accompanying tourist-season prices have ebbed.

Although it’s famous for its canals, Venice is a city that begs to be seen by foot, with many parts of the city accessible using the many bridges that connect Venetian neighborhoods.

A good place to start your exploration of the city is at the not-to-be-missed Basilica di San Marco. This amazing cathedral will take your breath away with a plethora of carefully crafted angels welcoming you through its doors. Built in the 11th century, this church was a true melting pot of Venetian culture, with Italian, Greek and even Egyptian features decorating its walls, as well as an awe-inspiring gold ceiling.

Just over the river to the south of the Basilica lies the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, home to the famous Peggy Guggenheim Collection, a accumulation of more than 200 avant-garde pieces of art from across the world. Precious Picassos hang side-by-side with surreal works by Salvador Dali, while local art is found in the center of the building, alongside more ornate pieces in the sculpture garden.

Of course, no visit to Venice would be complete without a visit to Piazza San Marco. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to this most-recognizable Piazza each year, feeding the thousands of pigeons that populate the square or sampling Venetian cooking in the many alfresco restaurants and cafes that are lined up along one side of the Piazza.

The Piazza San Marco is also the best peoplewatching spot in Venice, but beware if you are there during the evening: the Piazza San Marco is one of the first places in the city to become submerged in water come the daily high tides.

tremendous flexibility and was a major reason we were able to complete the entire film for under five thousand dollars.

While we were shooting, I repeatedly warned everyone involved that it was very possible we would end up being the only audience “Old Goats” ever had. And

I was serious. So the positive reaction the film has received is extremely gratifying.

I do find it interesting that the humor is what comes across most strongly, while the darker aspects receive less notice.

The main reason for that is obvious: Bob, Britt and Dave are hilarious. I also wonder if there’s another dynamic at work, and audiences are reacting to the film the way most of us react to life: we laugh as a way to keep the hard realities - including those associated with aging - at a distance.

Taylor Guterson (son of Novelist David Guterson - Snow Falling on Cedars) grew up in the Pacific Northwest on Bainbridge Island, WA. He graduated from the University of Washington in 2004 with a bachelor degree in arts and cinema studies.

Taylor started his career with a difficult stretch of landscaping and production assistant gigs, before landing a full time position with an internal corporate studio in Seattle.

He is currently a principal at Elliott Bay Productions, a video and events production company, where he produces and directs corporate and nonprofit videos. Taylor makes his home in Issaquah, WA with his wife Elizabeth. Old Goats is his first feature film.

STARBusiness American Credit Bureaus Directly Responsible For Finance Stalling The Economy Money, Business &

I’m guessing the use of credit has been around since the wooly mammoth.

Credit has been a useful tool in a large number of ways for a long, long time. Most everyone knows there are three main credit reporting agencies in the United States - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Each agency lists your FICO score. “FICO” is an acronym for Fair Isaac Corporation, a California company responsible for developing the system that bases your score on a secretive algorithm.

An algorithm is a procedure that produces an answer to a question in a finite number of steps. Algorithms are used in computers through mathematical formulas and instructions. So for anyone who wants to crack the credit scoring code thinking you can improve your credit score, just know you are facing an uphill climb. And that’s my rub on today’s big three credit reporting companies.

Good people’s lives have been financially ruined in some cases because of a mysterious computational formula called a credit score.

I know a lot of people. My rolodex contains thousands of names and phone numbers of folks I’ve done business with through the years. And I can tell you not a single person in my life ever woke up one morning and said, “I don’t think I’m gonna pay my bills anymore.” Nobody I’ve ever met has ever wanted to ignore their financial obligations. Unforeseen negative circumstances in life 99.9 percent of the time are what cause a person to miss a payment, not a decision on their part to just ignore a creditor.

According to an Experian

report in June of 2012, approximately 65 million (around 40 percent) of Americans have little or no credit, and approximately 45 million more have what is termed “bad” credit. Using the word “bad” to describe a person applies to someone in prison or on death row.

To attach the word bad to someone’s good name because they are struggling to make timely payments, and then a credit equation puts them in a high risk category with a low FICO score, well, that just flat burns me up.

Back in the mid 19th century, those who were unable to pay their debts were put in debtor’s prisons.

In the Roman republic around 300 BC, a person could pledge their own body as collateral for a loan. If they failed to pay, they became a slave to the lender.

In my view, the arcane credit reporting systems we have today are equivalent to virtual debtor’s prisons forcing people into virtual debt bondage.

There seems to be something terribly unjust about a thief who steals a $150,000 Mercedes and gets three years in jail, compared to a citizen who has no choice but to file bankruptcy on $20,000 of debt which then remains on their credit report for 10 years. That is just messed up. Judgments can remain on a person’s credit report for seven years, and a single 30 day late payment can reflect on your credit history for 24 months or longer. This method of “credit punishment” puts a spotlight on anyone who applies for credit and makes the resulting low credit score scream “Danger! Danger Will Robinson! Don’t give this

person credit.”

In many Asian countries, the credit reporting systems are geared toward keeping people in a positive credit environment. Bankruptcies

People will begin moving to California by the millions.

New businesses will be established creating millions of new jobs. Every conceivable industry will see a 200 percent increase in year over year revenues. Housing prices will increase 100 percent in 12 months and not because there would be an artificial inflationary housing bubble, but because the demand for housing would be so great that home inventory would fall to one percent. Property, state income, and sales taxes would bring California out of debt in three years and then create a $7.5 billion surplus in the fourth year.

And every conceivable benefit one could possibly imagine would come our way and truly make California the “golden state” once more.

I challenge any Ph.D.

Economist to tell me I’m wrong. Bring five million new residents to California, factor in an additional 14 million Californians who already live here, reset the credit clock for all of them, and the power of a new financial engine would create the world’s fourth largest economy within California’s borders by 2020.

New cars, chain stores, mom and pop businesses and every conceivable aspect of California would be touched upon in an extraordinary positive way.

Will “experts” in the credit reporting business find flaws in my vision? Of course they will. It’s what negative thinking people do. Remember Columbus?

History tells us his detractors said he was a nutty bird.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the sailor had the last laugh.

I could easily write a 200,000 word dissertation on the subject of how the three credit bureaus are killing American’s economic comeback. Credit reports are outdated and outmoded as they are currently designed.

The three bureaus, with their fancy applications and formulas used to describe an individual’s pay history, are superannuated and too old to be useful in their current format.

If Cavey Crockett, the wooly mammoth hunter were around today, something tells me he’d spear mainframe credit computer for being just too Stone Age in those “sophisticated” computations. I for one would not disagree.

INDIO, CA – From brioche layers with peanut butter, chocolate and jelly to Italian doughnuts filled with orange marmalade and chocolate, the dessert competition at Fantasy Springs was more mouth watering than fierce. Last week dozens of chefs from the resort whipped up their best dessert to compete for a sweet spot on the menu at Bistro restaurant.

This is the second time the resort has held a little friendly inter-kitchen competition. In July chefs put their own creative spins on a traditional steakhouse

staple, the Wedge Salad. These challenges, geared towards team building, are open to all culinary employees at the casino from the Executive Sous Chef, to line cooks in any of the eight restaurants.

This time, 18 employees submitted their desserts which were judged on presentation and taste by members of the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians. First place went to Richard Montez, a cook in the main kitchen who made a Belgian waffle ice cream stack.

PALM SPRINGS - The AOPA, Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, held a four-day conference in Palm Springs. A parade of planes started the event on Wednesday. Planes of all types taxied down the streets from the Palm Springs Airport to the Palm Springs Convention Center. There were many conferences, seminars, learning centers

and a huge number of vendors at the Center. Vendors showing everything for an airplane and its pilots could be found plus a few personal type items like sunglasses and clothing. paintings and even a massage chair.

There were lunches each day with speakers, A gala and evening parties every night. Daytime brought many speakers to the convention.

Airplanes in front of the Convention Center Friday morning session had the head of the FAA, CEO of OAPA, VIPs and even actor Harrison Ford as speakers. They spoke to the audience about the many concerns of the pilots and the industry.

They are excited about the new technology in the field naming the IPAD as a valuable tool in flying today.

Other concerns included fuel reduction, unmanned planes, complexity of certification, new laws for older planes, small airports decline, fewer professional and younger pilots and a possible 8 percecent cut

to the FAA in the near future.

Maintaining safety is still a top priority to the FAA. Harrison Ford told of his love of flying and how it gave him a new lease on life at age 52. He expressed his concern that we are training more foreigners to fly than Americans and the shortage of pilots in the future. He mentioned his new movie coming out that he is very proud of which is based on the life of baseball player Jackie Robinson. Each speaker was very informative and awards were presented during seminars.

Guests examined the costumes, furs and dolls from Alaska. McIntrye said nothing is ever wasted. The dances and language are taught in the schools so they will never be lost to the world.

STARGetting Away Thirty-Eight Hours in

The Land of the Midnight Sun

By Lizett Bond “We do not suggest hiking in the woods, but we have equipped each of your cars with special bear spray,” said our intrepid trip advisor. “It’s pepper spray, so if you do need to use it, be sure you are not standing downwind.”

My driving partner and I eye the big red can and joke nervously about poor aim, gauging wind and enraged bears.

Our orientation meeting is taking place at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, Alaska. Our mission is to spend one entire day driving the 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel along the Seward Highway, imparting our driving impressions to those in the lower 49. The German manufacturer is also providing a sort of Reader’s Digest condensed traveling guide for those with the Sourdough State on their “bucket list”.

Perceptions begin long before clambering behind the wheel of das Auto.

While a one-day journey does not leave time to visit Glacier Bay National Park, weather conditions permitting, a seat on the right side of the plane offers a breathtaking overview of the 3.3 million acre national park.

Once ensconced in that coveted spot, it is crucial to resist the temptation to strike up a conversation with your seatmate. Mine, an avid fisherman, regaled me with endless angling tales, and I finally put manners aside in exchange for glimpses of icebergs, cruise ships and the distinct sediment green of glacial fed water.

Too soon, my airborne sightseeing is over with a descent into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

properly branded sign, whisks me into an awaiting Porsche Cayenne.

Porsche has been at it for 10 days already, shooting photos and videos in preparation for two waves of journalists ready to put a pen to their comments regarding this new entry into the Porsche brand. At the ready is a fleet of 2013 Diesel Cayennes, which rolled off a barge at the Port of Anchorage, a German automotive invasion of sorts. Located at the head of the Cook Inlet, the port, largely undamaged by the 1964 Alaska earthquake, has become the busiest port in Alaska. Visitors can take advantage of oncea-month, free summer tours during those long daylight hours.

Our destination, the Hotel Captain Cook, with three towers and 565 rooms, is easy to recognize upon entering the downtown area. The first of the three towers was built after the

1964 earthquake and the hotel now fills a city block.

After check in and a short rest, I’m ready to schmooze with the best of them as I traverse the huge hotel lobby, making my way to dinner.

Located on the top floor of Tower Three, the most outstanding feature of the The Crow’s Nest Restaurant are the breathtaking views of the Cook Inlet, downtown Anchorage and the Chugach Mountains.

Dinner for me is Alaskan Halibut with braised wild mushrooms. The best I’ve ever tasted. The 10,000-bottle wine cellar left no one feeling neglected and I walked off dinner with a little stroll around the town.

As the gateway to Alaska, downtown Anchorage has that port/working town feel and began as a railroad construction camp on the banks of Ship Creek in the early 1900’s. A short walk from the hotel is the state’s largest museum, the Anchorage Museum, with a 15,000 gallery devoted to Alaskan history.

But tomorrow is a big driving day and my pillow beckons…

The Seward Highway traverses 127 miles south across the Kenai Peninsula ending in the town of Seward on Resurrection Bay. Named an All American Road by the US government, it’s worth a leisurely drive or, in our case, it’s the perfect place to see how the Cayenne rates.

Our first stop is the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center; a non-profit organization

dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife. The center provides permanent homes to animals that cannot be released into the wild. No need for bear spray here, this is the place for safe, up close and personal viewing of bears, eagles, lynx and caribou, amongst others.

Late August may be cold, windy and damp but too soon it’s time to press on to our next destination; lunch at the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge located in Cooper Landing. The lodge sits on the banks of the Kenai River and features bungalowstyle rooms and plenty of tranquility on 43 acres of grounds. Our repast is served in the Eagles Crest Restaurant, complete with stone fireplace and a breathtaking view of the river from the outdoor deck.

After a lunch of blackened Halibut and a Salmon chowder, we waddle back out to our awaiting coaches and head to Quartz Creek, a major spawning tributary for Kenai River System Sockeye Salmon. What an amazing and exhausting display of sexual prowess! The salmon are huge, the water clear and shallow.

It’s mesmerizing to watch, but bring mosquito repellent, those flying insects are as big and as tenacious as the salmon.

A little mosquito netting paired with that bear spray and I could have stayed for hours, but it’s time for Alaska Supreme ice cream at Sweet Mo’s in the town of Hope.

Located 87 miles south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway, the gold rush town was established 1896.

Fortified, we head to Portage Glacier and Portage Lake. By this time, the wind has picked up along with the chill factor. Icebergs bobbing on the lake add to the rawness.

Portage Glacier has begun to recede from the far shore of Portage Lake, although much still extends 100 feet down into the lake. We jump out, sans bear spray, take a few photos and jump back into the car to warm up. At this point, it’s getting late and time to head to our lodgings for the night.

Departure the next morning is o’dark thirty and my thirty-eight hours in the last frontier only served to whet my appetite for more.

This year’s edition of the series is Hollywood Behind the Scenes: The Critics Corner, highlighting key moments in movie history and exploring important trends in the movie industry with five of the most prominent, nationallyknown movie critics. In onstage interviews, the critics will read excerpts from their most memorable reviews and discuss significant movies, directors, and stars, as well as their own careers writing about the movies.

The series kicks off on Monday, Oct. 15 with longtime Newsweek film critic David Ansen. For more than 35 years, Ansen has been one of the

most acclaimed, insightful, and original voices writing about the movies. Amazingly, his career as a chronicler of films began when he was 12-years-old. That was when he started keeping a list of all the movies he’d seen, along with a rating for each movie. Now, some years later, the list contains well over 8,000 entries.

Idyllwild CinemaFest Joins IMDb’s Withoutabox Submission Service IDYLLWILD, CA — Festival chairman Philip R. Calderone announced last week that the Idyllwild CinemaFest is now listed on IMDb’s Withoutabox Submission Service. This industrystandard film festival submission service allows for paperless submission using the filmmaker’s Withoutabox (WAB) account.

For a first-time filmmaker or first-submission project, submitting to the Idyllwild CinemaFest will automatically create a new IMDb (Internet Movie Dababase) listing for their project.

Drum Circle Honoring The Full Moon on Monday, Oct. 29 JOSHUS TREE, CA - The Joshua Tree Retreat Center at the Institute of Mentalphysics will host a community drum circle celebrating the Full Moon from 7 – 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29. Well-known Joshua Tree percussionist Sam Sloneker will facilitate the gathering, which will be held in the center’s Friendship Hall. Halloween costumes are encouraged.

Studies have shown participation in group drumming to offer a number of worthwhile benefits, including artistic self-expression, community connection and interaction, an expanded sense of self and heightened sense of belonging, increased rapport with others, relief of stress, emotional balancing, and strengthening of the immune system.

“Fall has arrived here in the desert, ushered in by some spectacular meteor showers and our September Autumn Equinox drum circle. It’s bringing us some welcomed cooler temperatures, and I’m really looking forward to our drumming together beneath October’s Full Moon,” said Sloneker.

Phase One of the new DHS Boys and Girls Club opened on Monday, Oct. 15 with city crews unpacking sports equipment, gear, table games such as billiards and ping pong tables, said City Manager Rick Daniels.

Cabot’s recent designation on the National Register of Historic Places also offered challenges to the group as they reviewed the four areas required to attain and maintain accreditation with the federal government, as well as the critical work and fundraising required to protect the original structure and the collection inside from the elements. Both have been damaged by flooding in recent years.

A recent grant made it possible to move some of the 10,000 item collection to climate controlled, offsite storage. This allowed some of the most fragile items to be kept in an environment that prevents further damage.

The space is rented and the long range plan for the Museum includes “on campus” storage and conservation facilities. The completion of the plans are dependent on funding from a variety of sources and could take up to ten years.

New event attracting tourists from around the globe PALM SPRINGS, CA - The first International Bear Convergence event was announced at Hunters Nightclub in Palm Springs. The event, attracting men from all over the world, is associated with the LGBT subset known as ‘Bears,” is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of revenue and tax dollars to a city that already hosts the White Party and Dinah Shore Weekend.

More than 4,000 men are expected to attend this event being hosted at the Renaissance Palms Springs Hotel. Local retailers and restaurants will benefit from the attendance and business owners are excited to begin promoting Palm Springs to this international audience.

Event Producer Steve (Stevo) Harris and Co-Producer Chris Vance are determined to make a splash in the World-wide Bear event circuit as this winter event will attract those seeking the perfect location for sun and fun.

Del Shores Speaks on “Sordid Lives” Photos and Story by Pat Krause PALM SPRING, CA - Del Shores, who brought the movie “Sordid Lives” to the Valley has brought another funny and very raw emotional film to the Camelot Theatre. The premier showing of “Blues for Willadean” was held on Friday, Oct. 12 with a Q&A segment.

Four members of the cast and Del Shores took to the stage. The audience asked very few questions but thanked Shores for having the courage to make a film like this about domestic abuse and yet bringing enough humor during the film to make people laugh. A few told their own stories about abuse and had the cast and audience getting tears in their eyes.

The movie was based on the play, “The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife.” It brought you into the life of an abused wife living in a trailer, with a black woman as her best friend, a harlot neighbor and her abusive husband. Shores brought his own brand of humor to this film. He had the audience laughing out loud on many occasions and watching in horror in other parts. It is a very emotional film with superb acting. This film was shown during Domestic Abuse month. I think this movie will be here for a long time after the word gets out about how great this little film is. Hopefully, this movie will give women the courage to leave an abusive relationship.
