health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash— both pose potential safety and health hazards. Four days after the first event, Congress passed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an

Bring your medications for disposal to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department at 65950 Pierson Blvd. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Last April, Americans turned in 552,161 pounds — 276 tons — of prescription drugs at over 5,600 sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,300 state and local law enforcement partners. In its four previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in over 1.5 million pounds — nearly 775 tons — of pills. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public

Coachella Valley, CA - Continuing the shift from emergency response to recovery, Riverside County broadened damage assessment efforts and set up a hotline that residents and businesses in and around Mecca can use to report damage caused by last week’s floods. About 30 county fire/ OES, code enforcement, health, housing and transportation officials were in Mecca Friday. Teams moved throughout the community to contact residents whose homes were damaged and identify their

needs. Mecca-area residents whose homes sustained damage during the recent rainstorm and subsequent flooding can use the 211 telephone system to report damage. County officials said much of the floodwaters that covered a portion of the community have receded, but the damage caused by the rains, mud and debris is now being discovered as residents return to their homes. The 211 system will be used to gather information and better gauge the extent of residential damage in the area.

Businesses that were damaged can also call 211. Early Sept. 11, heavy rains drenched the MeccaThermal area, sending

water and mud more than two feet deep in some places through portions of the community. (Jump to page 21)

Editor’s opinion By Jackie Devereaux I’ll take my lovely panoramic views of the windmills against the backdrop of the San Jacinto and San Gorgonio mountains any day. I like the windmills. They’re one of the reasons I moved to the Desert (and away from the threat of San Onofre). I thought, “These people are doing it right. They’re making clean energy. “ A spokesperson for the (Desert) California Wind Energy Association, who wishes to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the issue, says that our windmills stand erect and crossed like scarecrows in the fields. “Fortunately, the wind mills have scared away the vampire.” I don’t think Trump will be flying into the Palm Springs International Airport too soon on his private jet. And I’m sure there won’t be a welcoming committee there to greet him if he does. Instead, if he visits our environmentally cleaner region, there may be one protestor with tomatoes in hand ready to hurl at his red toupee.

From Aug. 2011 to Aug. 2012, major crime (part 1 crime) has dropped nearly 46.5% in Desert Hot Springs; due in part to an increase in community policing and neighborhood watch programs. This is an effort by the City, in association with community activism, to reduce crime and create a safe environment for families in Desert Hot Springs.

CODE ENFORCEMENT:

City of Desert Hot Springs, working in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies, has undertaken initiatives to either destroy, remove or close buildings/structures which are a haven for gang-related activities. The Star’s Desert Agua Caliente Cultural Museum

I

haven’t counted, but I would not be surprised if the Desert hosts more museums than festivals, although some of the smaller exhibits tend to get overlooked. One of our Valley’s most underused cultural resources is the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum. Founded 11 years ago in modest-sized accommodations of less than 1,600 square feet, the Agua Caliente Band or Cahuilla Indians began to collect and preserve stories and artifacts of the tribe, sharing them with local residents and visitors. Today, the museum serves more than 18,000 visitors a year and includes quality

exhibitions at the museum and at off-site locations, as well as lectures and handson experiences with Native American skills and crafts. Perhaps the museum’s greatest accomplishment to date is its recognition as a regional and national resource by the Smithsonian Institution, the first Native American museum in the country to be so honored. This recognition provides for a mutual sharing of resources in collections, scholarship, programming and technical expertise enabling the museum to bring world-acclaimed Smithsonian

exhibitions to the Coachella Valley. With the on-set of fall, the museum recently announced its 2012-2013 season exhibitions, programs and festivals. The current exhibition, titled “Visions of the Indian Canyons,” a photographic journey deep into the majestic beauty and historic controversies of the four main Indian canyons adjacent to Palm Springs, is closing Nov. 4. It will be replaced with a new exhibition: “Where are the Tipis … the changing perceptions about Indians.” It will open with a free public

reception from 6 -8 p.m. The exhibition, which provides insights into past and present misinformation about Native Americans, will run through Oct. 20. The upcoming season will also feature a Bird Song & Dance Festival on Jan. 26, and a five-day Native FilmFest starting Feb. 27, showcasing the finest in films by, about and staring Native Americans and other indigenous peoples worldwide. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is located at 219 S. Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs and admission is free. More information is available at (760) 778-1079.

Once again audiences will be riveted and enthralled by the colorful, Broadwaystyle, lavishly costumed, stage presentations staring the Follies’ legendary chorus line of ‘Long-Legged Lovelies’ and ‘Follies Gentlemen.’ Headlining this season’s musical extravaganza will be Lorna Luft (Nov. 1 - Dec. 31), Lou Christie (Jan. 8 – Mar. 9) and Lesley Gore (Mar. 12 – May 19). Desert Society By Frances Allen Maestro’s, Just Blow Drys and Wink Lash & Beauty Bar Opens on El Paseo

Donald Trump Offends Desert Dwellers Again

It has finally sunk in: El Paseo is to the Desert what Rodeo Drive is to Beverly Hills, and more of the Southland’s upscale establishments have gotten the message and are running with it … straight to a spot on El Paseo in Palm Desert. Mastro’s, the highend steak and seafood restaurant that is one of Beverly Hills’ favorite eateries, has had a lease on El Paseo restaurant space since 2007, but didn’t want to build it out until now, citing the poor economy as the reason. Mastro’s has felt a seachange, and the restaurant, with 150 new jobs, is now set for opening Nov. 2. Also coming to El Paseo is a Wolfgang Puck Restaurant that is in its final construction stage. Of course, a meal at one of these fine restaurants means you have to look your best. No problem; for that last minute hair and facial fix internationallyknown Just Blow Drys (sic) and Wink Lash & Beauty Bar are putting out the welcome mat on El Paseo as well.

Things have not been perfect in the Desert the past week. Palm Springs’ iconic windmills were criticized as being ugly by no less a style expert than Donald Trump. The part-time birth certificate inspector, part-time selfproclaimed real estate developer, said that wind turbines have destroyed the entrance to Palm Springs. Love them, or hate them, local residents have come to realize that the windmills are the beginning steps in a (eventually) less oil-dependent lifestyle, and like over-protective parents, fiercely defend them to outsiders. While the self-Trumpeter is entitled to his opinion, Desert memories are not so short that they have forgotten the time Trump came to town in 2002. Then, against a background of fawning and giddiness unequalled since, Trump did a deal with the Twenty-nine Palms Band of Mission Indians to have Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts manage the Indian’s casino and have the name on the casino renamed to “Trump 29.” The result: Trump’s company went bankrupt about four years later, the name of the casino reverted back to its original, Spotlight 29, all of which left me with one great souvenir tee-shirt.

But, since 2005, there has been a more sobering pink-colored image flying through the skies: Pink Delta. Every October since 2005, Delta Air Lines has partnered with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in a world-wide fund-raising drive to help raise awareness and funds for lifesaving research efforts. Qatar Airways culinary staff

World-class chefs for Qatar Airways Unless your knowledge of cuisine and chefs is confined to only watching the Food Channel, the news that Qatar Airways has assembled four world renowned chefs to create a “Culinary World Menu” will not have much import. But chances are that if you paid full-price for a first class ticket on a Qatar Airways’ long-haul flight you will have experienced the food prepared by this fourman lineup of celebrated chefs in one of their signature restaurants around the globe. Probably the most famous of the four chefs is Nobu Matsuhisa who, along with his 29 restaurants in 25 cities across five continents, is simply known as Nobu. Nobu has earned two Michelin stars for his fusion of traditional cuisine with South American ingredients. U.K. Chef Tom Aikens, the youngest British chef ever awarded two Michelin stars, will be responsible for combining the unique flavors of British-French cuisine at 35,000 feet. Chef Vineet Bhatia is the only Indian chef to have won two Michelin stars; he will address

passengers’ affection for exotic Indian tastes and spices. Each chef was chosen for his mastery of their local cuisine and as an ambassador for the dishes presented. An easy job for the fourth chef, Ramzi Choueiri, whose foodbased television shows are seen by millions across the Middle East. If the above news sounds well and good for the passengers sitting behind the cockpit in the nose of the aircraft, what about those who are wedged in next to the restrooms in the tail? We don’t have the figures for Qatar Airways, but an enterprising company in Briton, which obviously has an interest in the issue, says that low-cost airlines can be anything but ‘budget’ when it comes to the on-board price of food and drink. TravelSupermarket, the U.K. company that commissioned the research found some startling facts, and while the results are from European-based airlines, I’m certain that most of the results, (but not those for tea and coffee), translate accurately to the U.S. as well. The average on-board mark-up on hot drinks is 2,355 percent. That’s right, more than a 2,000-time mark-up for tea and coffee; perhaps due to the fact that passengers cannot bring more than three ounces of liquid onboard with them, resulting in a captive market for tea and coffee.

Soft drinks command a 370 percent mark-up; that’s more than the 311 percent average mark-up on alcohol. Beginning to look reasonable: the 181 percent mark-up on food (excluding hot food and sandwiches). With numbers like these, is there any doubt why airlines want to go into the food and beverage industry?

A Living Wall on Crystal Symphony In a time when cruise ships boast of having climbing walls and over-the-side-of-theship walkways, one of Crystal Cruises’ ultra-luxurious vessels, the Crystal Symphony, has taken an area outside on an upper deck to install the world’s first living wall at sea. Nearly 38 feet long and eight feet high, the living wall uses a varied and diverse selection of plants to form a world map display. It’s a vertical garden that is pre-planted in panels that are then attached to a vertical surface. Plants stay intact in their vertical positions because their root structures are anchored in two to four inches of soil held within the panel. The living wall serves as a reminder of Crystal Cruises’ commitment to the environment and acts as a biofilter, enhancing air quality by breaking down harmful airborne contaminants and transforming them into clean oxygen. No wonder then, the living wall will be adjacent to the Crystal Symphony’s outdoor grill.

The celebration is part of the Mayor’s Healthy Planet, Healthy You initiative, a yearround program that promotes ways to help address wellness while fighting childhood obesity, an issue close to the heart of the mayor, the father of two youngsters. “Childhood obesity has a high cost to our children in long-term health and self-esteem,” according to Pougnet. “It’s important to show families small, easy steps they can take that can make a big difference in healthy living.” The fall Sustainability Celebration will coincide with the Palm Springs Organic Farmers’ market and

A Networking Homerun! By Heather Coladonato DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA - When it comes to business development, one of the most common tactics in our marketing toolbox is networking. Getting out there to mix and mingle with potential prospects and power partners should definitely be a part of every business person’s calendar. Regardless of the frequency you choose to be out there networking, I see many business people striking out at bat. I hear a lot of frustration with the number of times small business owners are still swinging and missing. Networking is much bigger than the well-rehearsed 30-second commercials and clever elevator speeches. There’s another large piece to networking which is your feel-appeal. What is feel-appeal? It’s simply how you make people feel. Who do you know in a business context that have made you feel: Clueless; Inadequate; Incompetent; Ordinary; Undervalued; Unintelligent or Used. Since we are referring to people in the business context, you most likely are not tying those negative feelings to blatantly negative words that came out of their mouths. It’s more likely a subtle, unspoken aura that comes from people in the form of motives, actions and attitudes. Most of the times those people that exude repelling aura are completely unaware. Nevertheless, they are unintentionally making people feel bad. And, who wants to do business with someone who makes them feel bad? Now, how about the flip side? Reflect on the people you know in a business context that have made you feel: Admired; Highly intelligent; Important; Like a rock star; Supported; Understood or Valued In thinking about the positive experiences with these types of people what can you learn from them that you too can implement to increase

September 27, 2012

the strength and power of your own feel-appeal? Here are a couple of questions to consider. Think about those people who made you feel BAD. What were the subtle behaviors, body language or non-verbal cues that gave you a negative perception? Think about those people who made you feel GOOD. What were the subtle behaviors, body language or non-verbal cues that gave you a positive perception? Hit a homerun at the next networking event you attend by being aware of your body language and non-verbal cues. Here’s to your business growth and networking success!

BusinessSTAR Crowd Funding Creates New Opportunities For Small Business And First Time Investors On April 4, 2012, President Obama signed into law the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, otherwise known as the JOBS ACT. In this bipartisan bill, a provision was specifically dedicated to crowd funding. Crowd funding can be generally defined as a new and novel way of securing financing and business capital. By seeking loans

from crowds of smaller investors who may have $25 to $2,000 to place in a business venture, a small business owner can now target a lending pool that has previousl been largely untapped in American economics. DHS City Attorney Starts Work At L.A. Law Firm By Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – City Attorney Ruben Duran enjoyed his last day on the job Tuesday, Sept. 4. Duran resigned his city job to accept a position with the Los Angeles-based law firm of Burke, Williams and Sorensen. Duran served as the DHS city attorney since November 2006 and said he resigned to pursue a “tremendous opportunity” at the private law firm. Duran also said he hopes to carry over the city of DHS as his client there. However, the city currently has a contract for legal services with Meyers Nave of Los Angeles and must give a 30 day notice if it decides to cancel and go with another firm. Duran and the DHS city council have been scrutinzed in the past for approving the payment of $265,000 to Tony Clarke, a disgraced concert promoter, who submitted documents touting his “trumped up qualifications” for a World Wellness and Music Festival in Desert Hot Springs headling Ziggy Marley. That concert failed but the city is currently interviewing new promoters

to bring a music festival to DHS. Two promoters were disqualified recently because their qualifications did not match the city’s needs. Clarke had a provision in his contract that did not guarantee any music festival would ever occur and that same provision also left him “off the hook” financially. Duran warned the council of the risk in Clark’s contract before they authorized his payments. The city council met in closed session at the Sept. 4 council meeting to decide whether to continue its contract with Meyers Nave or whether to hire a different law firm. They also deliberated on whether to appoint a new city attorney. No decisions were made at that time. City Manager Rick Daniels said the city must circulate an RFP (Request For Proposals) which solicits bids from competative law firms. In the fiscal year 2010 -2011, the city paid Myers Nave $365,945 for legal services. The city should decide on its contract for legal services at the next city council meeting set for Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.

of business financing. Presley Investments has created two new crowd funding subsidiaries; Crowd Funding Approved and Genesis Cash. CFA is structured to be for the secular business world while GC has been established for Christian business and Christian investors. As is apparent, my interest in crowd funding is not just as a business journalist but also as a businessman having first hand experience in this developing industry of investment capital. Even though the crowd funding bill was signed into law, equity crowd funding (meaning owning shares in a company) is still not a viable tool until the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) implements this law. Implementation by the SEC is expected by February of 2013. In the meantime, Presley Investments is in the process of filing all required documents so that CFA and GC become

Desert LivingSTAR Solve All Of Your Problems Using These Six Thinking Hats

T

his week I want to focus on learning how to think better, a human ability that hopefully will even increase as we have a longer life. We will do this thinking about thinking by examining the Six Thinking Hats method of Edward de Bono, who has the unusual title of Professor of Thinking at The University of Advancing Technology in Phoenix, Arizona.

With degrees in medicine, psychology and design, De Bono was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2005. He has been on the faculties of the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, London and Harvard. Emphasizing thinking as a learnable skill and deliberate act, de Bono’s techniques are used in companies like IBM and DuPont. George Gallup, originator of the Gallup Poll, says that “De Bono’ work may be the best thing going on in the world today.” De Bono has written 82 books that have been translated into 42 languages. He insists that “Good thinking is not a matter of intelligence, not a gift. It is a skill that can be practiced and developed like any other.” He uses the image of six colored hats to encourage people to think creatively and effectively. Think of these hats as thinking caps of different colors, each representing different questions for helping you make better decisions. If alone, you might imagine yourself putting on one hat after the other and using the point of view represented by the particular hat. If you are in a group facing a problem, different people can imagine wearing the six different hats while presenting that point of view to the group, thus preventing a one-sided, limited solution to the problem. Here’s the rainbow of hats you might use, as presented in Edward de Bono’s book, “Six Thinking Hats.” WHITE HATS represent facts, figures and information. Think of a scientist dressed in a white laboratory coat. The white-hat questions you ask yourself are: “What facts will help me make a decision? Where and from whom can I get the necessary facts?” RED HATS symbolize emotions and feelings, hunches and intuition. Think of a

red heart. The red-hat questions are: “How do I really feel about this? What’s my gut reaction to the situation.” BLACK HATS represent a negative outlook, playing devil’s advocate, thinking why the solution being advocated won’t work. Think of a judge robed in black. Ask yourself: What are the possible downside risks and problems? What is the worst-case scenario? YELLOW HATS symbolize opportunities, optimism and constructive thinking. Think of bright yellow sunshine. Questions: What are all the possible advantages? What would be the best outcome if we used this particular solution?

GREEN HATS represent creative, fertile thinking. Think of green sprouts from newly planted seeds. Questions: What completely new, fresh, innovative approaches can I come up with? What creative ideas can I dream up to help me see the problem in a different way? BLUE HATS are for cool, controlled thinking about thinking. Think of the blue sky under which you find everything else! If you are in a group, the person wearing the blue hat is the chairperson. The blue hat gives you the opportunity to review your thoughts and sum up what you have learned. Using the method of imagining yourself sequentially wearing one of the six colored hats and asking the related questions will prevent you from facing a problem in a onesided, dogmatic fashion. “Putting on” a hat focuses thinking; “switching hats” redirects thinking. With different parts of the thing process thus clearly defined, discussions and

In his book, “Six Thinking Hats,” De Bono says that “The main restriction on thinking is ego defense, which is responsible for most of the practical faults of thinking. Studio D Exhibits Photography “Walk of the Pink Flamingos” Contest and Auction benefits Friends of the PS Animal Shelter

PALM SPRINGS, CA - Studio D announces it will exhibit the work of fine art and architectural p h ot o g ra p h e r C l a r k Dugger this fall — the first photographer whose work the studio has ever exhibited. The exhibition of Dugger’s new work, entitled “substrata,” will open Oct. 1, with an artist’s reception on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served. Studio D owner Downs (who goes by one name) said that over the years many photographers have approached him wanting

to show their work in his studio. “Nothing I saw had the right vibe,” said Downs. “When Clark showed me a sample of some of his new work I was blown away.” Downs immediately invited Dugger to be the opening artist for the fall season. Dugger has been photographing weathered, decaying and crumbling surfaces and objects for years. “Billboard signs, for example, that have been neglected and partially washed away by rain often reveal hidden layers beneath them,” said Dugger. “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is one of the most charming films released in 2012 and it is now available on DVD. The stellar British cast is led by Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson with young Dev Patel from “Slumdog Millionaire” in the role of the Marigold Hotel owner. (I predict this film will be an Oscar contender in 2013, and deservedly so.) EntertainmentSTAR Aimee Mann, Susanna Hoffs and Sara Watkins return with sterling releases A parade of talented ladies score exceptionally high marks thanks to their latest releases representing winning styles from across the musical universe.

Artist: Susanna Hoffs Album: Someday (Baroque Folk)

Artist: Aimee Mann Album: Charmer (SuperEgo Records) You might be interested in buying this if you like: Beth Orton, Cat Power Tell me more: No contemporary artist writes songs quite like Aimee Mann. On her newly-issued album “Charmer,” the singer-songwriter offers up her literate observations via melodic and haunting songs that go down like vintage powerpop classics while boasting rich sonic colors and lyrical insights that artfully reveal themselves a little bit more with each subsequent listen. Retro ‘80s sounds permeate the cool neo-New Wave “Gamma Ray.” The undeniable “Labrador” is as catchy as any song released this year but attains even more ground with Mann’s emotive soprano conveying the song’s honest look at romantic betrayal. On “Living a Lie,” she shares lead vocals with the Shins’ James Mercer, their voices forming another magical point on a potent and powerful album.

You might be interested in buying this if you like: Petula Clark, Jackie DeShannon, Dusty Springfield, The Bangles Tell me more: A musical love letter to the 1960s, Susanna Hoffs’ shimmering solo release “Someday” recalls the classic recordings of Petula Clark and Jackie DeShannon. Produced by the Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Vonda Shepard, Ron Sexsmith), “Someday” is no mere experiment in retro music making. The collection of Hoffs-penned material tackles real world emotion (the breezy “One Day” and wistful “Holding My Breath”) and pulls experiences from her own life together into an enthralling collection of 10 songs that clock in at around 31 minutes. “All I Need” is as confessional as any song issued this year, while “Raining” recalls some of those amazing Jimmy Webb compositions recorded by Glen Campbell (“By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston”) in the late ‘60s. “Someday” is one of those timeless sets that demands to be played front to back, and over and over.

You might be interested in buying this if you like: Sixpence None the Richer, Sheryl Crow, Nickel Creek Tell me more: Like Brandi Carlile, Sara Watkins is a singer-songwriter not afraid to mix intelligent song craft and honest emotion in order to mine exciting new territory in the Americana genre. On her sophomore solo effort “Sun Midnight Sun,” there is tuneful straight-forward material (the singalong styled “You and Me” and “When It Pleases You”), bittersweet ballads (“Be There”), several fiddle-anchored instrumental tracks (“The Foothills,” “The Ward Accord”) and even edgy roots rock (a revised take on the Everly Brothers’ classic “You’re the One I Love”

STAR50 Plus The Senior Living Industry Is Looking for a Few Good Young People By Dwayne J. Clark Today, the senior living industry is not on most young people’s radar as a potential career track or even as a starter or summertime job—but it should be. Senior housing is a $40 billion industry that is growing rapidly in need, scale, and employment opportunities, and it will continue to do so over the next several decades as the U.S. population ages. These are not the stereotypical “old folks’ homes” of yesteryear. Skilled nursing facilities still abound, of course, but the greatest growth—and the most dynamic revolution—is taking place in retirement and assisted living communities. These are thriving, active, lively places of business that are also fun, rewarding places to work. To be successful, these communities require a broad range of skills in full- and part-time positions, and not just nursing and care coordinators. Here are three entry-level opportunities to consider: 1. Work in the kitchen with meal prep or on-site dining rooms and café in a wait staff position for the three meals and additional snacks made available to residents each day.

This can involve helping to prepare meals and serving. What a great way to get your foot in the door for the teen who might be interested in a culinary career! 2. Help with senior activities. If a young person has high energy and some experience in crafts or the performing arts, what could be more satisfying than helping seniors have some fun and tap into their artistic side? Senior living communities have a daily, weekly and monthly activities calendar. The program includes various types of activities that volunteers or staff may assist with such as: painting, exercise, games, singing, dancing, trivia, and outings to museums, parks, galleries and the Arts. 3. Work as a night-time concierge who answers phones and resident inquiries. While a night-time position requires less experience than its day-time counterpart, it still provides an opportunity to visit with residents, greet guests, and get involved with customer

service. It might lack glamour, but this is a responsible position and can provide solid work experience for a young person’s resume. Alternatively, a high school or college student can intern in specific departments, including accounting, marketing, and human resources. For the right person, the industry offers strong wages, top-notch benefits, a warm, supportive working atmosphere, and consistently high levels of job satisfaction. Young people bring their own unique brand of good medicine to seniors. Residents feed off of youthful enthusiasm and energy and enjoy hearing modern-day, coming-of-age stories just as they enjoy relating their own remembrances and dispensing nuggets of advice to a young person facing a challenge in their personal or professional life. Senior living administrators truly want— and need—to hire teens and new college graduates. Not everyone needs to be on a career track to work at an assisted living or retirement

community. These can also be wonderful, safe, nurturing places for that first-ever job. Along the way, young people gain experience in working with the older generation and pick up the kind of hard and soft skills that are in demand and can be illustrated on resumes and college applications. So to teenagers who may be interested: Go visit your grandmother’s assisted living community or an older family friend who has taken up residence there. Look around. Talk to employees. And if you can see yourself working with interesting people who appreciate your youthful enthusiasm and energy (and who are chock full of fascinating stories and wise counsel) and if you want to learn new skills in a positive, supportive environment, then by all means, go fill out a job application. Your decision could have a tremendous impact on someone’s life— and not just your own. Dwayne J. Clark is the founder and CEO of Aegis Living, currently with 28 senior living communities in Washington, California, and Nevada, and the author of “My Mother, My Son: A true story of love, determination, and memories...lost”

AutomotiveSTAR 2013 Kia Optima Sedan Raises The Luxury Bar The mid-size car segment is crowded with models from every carmaker, so standing out in this sea of cars is no easy task. We tested the 2013 Kia Optima SXL, and found it hits the sweet spot combination of power, design, technology, fuel economy and affordability. It’s built at Kia’s U.S. plant in Georgia, and it raises the bar of luxury for Kia. The Optima styling is amazing and drop-dead gorgeous. It’s one of the few cars I’ve driven lately that people stopped to comment on how great the car looks. It projects a refined, performanceoriented aesthetic with a sleek silhouette, aggressive stance and sculpted elements that suggest it’s a far more expensive car than it is. Every 2013 Optima, available in LX, EX, SX and the all-new Limited trim, comes equipped with a generous list of standard features, with the LX trim offering dual exhaust with chrome tips, solar glass, exterior mirror turn signal indicators, front fog

lights, exterior heated mirrors, chrome accented exterior door handles and 16-inch alloy wheels and a six-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the Optima is full of nice surprises, and far more content and comfort than you’d expect. It’s very comfortable and easy to live with, easily on a par with Lexus IS-350. Cabin comfort is further complemented by lots of standard technology features including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Satellite audio system with SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. All Optima’s also feature cruise control and an Active Eco System that allows drivers to optimize fuel efficiency while driving. 2013 models add standard wood trim to door inserts and the center console as well as metal bezel trim. standard premium features include push button-start ignition with Smart Key, dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents, leather seat trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, auto-dimming rear view mirror with HomeLink and compass, driver and front passenger automatic window up/ down and an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, door mood lamp and overhead pin lamp, chrome inside door handles, illuminated glove box, rear reading lamps, and floor mats. Two packages are offered for the 2013 Optima SX, beginning with the Premium Touring Package, which adds unique 18-inch luxury wheels to the EX Premium Package’s content while the Technology Package (requires Premium Touring Package) features the navigation system with backup camera and SiriusXM Traffic. The driving dynamics and road manners are as good as other sedans I’ve driven that easily cost twice as much. Built as a unibody structure, the front-wheel-drive Optima uses independent front and rear suspension with MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link layout in the rear. Coil springs and front anti-roll bars complete the set up, engaging drivers with responsive handling and providing the utmost comfort whether the road is smooth or less than ideal. The 2013 Optima is available with two fuel-efficient and powerful Theta II powerplants with gasoline direct injection (GDI), including a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder or a 2.0-liter GDI turbo engine. A 2.4-liter hybrid powertrain is also available. The 2.4-liter GDI engine makes 200-hp while upgrading to the 274-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo GDI engine (SX models) delivers V6-type power with a four-cylinder’s efficiency. Each engine choice is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission featuring Sportmatic clutchless shifting. Both engines also offer great fuel economy. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder posts 24/35 miles per gallon, while the 2.0-liter turbo GDI offers 22/34 mpg. Pricing starts at $21,200. SXL Limited package (as tested) starts at $34,500. Rivals are the Toyota Camry XLE, Ford Fusion SEL, Honda Accord EX-L and other similar mid-size cars. The Optima is covered by Kia’s 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty. For Libra: All Venusian themes such as beauty, love, stability, loyalty or disloyalty, romance and patience will rule supreme until Oct. 22. A more heightened awareness of the social atmosphere, social grace of one’s self or of others, and decisiveness. The best side of Libra is seen in their polite manner, their ability to charm and their desire for justice to the underdog. The key is to know how to work on the delicate balances in Life, when to behave with diplomacy, to display empathy and tolerance and, when to let go by leaving justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Celebrate this month with respect, action towards the ethers or the air around you, air within you; experience the transformational power of Pramayama, (breath control, breath techniques) found in Yoga. Teach Your Children - Humility By Terrance K. Phillips The thought occurred to me that we spend far too much time and money on unnecessary items. Take a cell phone for instance. I want and need access to a telephone. I have no desire to play X-Box or watch movies on a 1½-inch screen. I don’t care if it vibrates and has 50 selections of ring tones and 10,000 songs. The original bell sound is just fine. If there is something so important that someone needs to Email me they can call me on the phone. I’m not impressed because one phone is bright blue, red or green, as a black case works just as well. All these things cost more money. Likewise, when I travel on a plane, when the distance between the pilot’s cockpit and my seat lessens, the fare goes up. We know that when it lands, everybody gets there at the same time anyway. The last time I checked, I never heard of a plane backing into a mountain; therefore, it isn’t a safety issue where you sit. I don’t

When I grew up, it was the absolute duty of the children to mow the lawn, water the lawn, wash the family car and wash the dishes. We didn’t have a dishwasher and I had to push the lawnmower because it didn’t have a motor and we couldn’t afford a gardener. The car

was not luxurious; it was functional and needed a shower now and then. We didn’t do this for money; it was an obligation to the family. With simplicity came humility. It just seems like we appreciated things more in those days than what is expected of the children of today. We wonder why children seem to get into more trouble than we did. The reason we didn’t was that we honored our parents, and their word was the rule we lived by. I addressed my dad as “sir” or “dad,” and my mother was “mum” or “mom.” It was always “yes sir” or “yes ma’am” and “please and thank you.” If you used a swear word,

you would be severely punished and grounded. Grounded is a great word. When we have our feet on the ground, we make good decisions. When you heard the term “you’re grounded,” dad was pulling your feet back to reality. I just don’t see bad kids out there today—I see weak parenting skills. My parents were very strict! I knew my limits and if I crossed that line, I would not only be punished but I’d have to live with the fact that I had let my loving parents down. The love and respect I had for mom and dad overpowered my urge to crossover the line of decency and mischief. Money can buy outrageous cell phones, cars, first-class travel and more but there is one thing that money can’t buy—humility. If we can offer our children anything make certain this is at the top of the list. Terrance K. 7th Annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival JOSHUA TREE, CA - The 7th annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival returns to the high desert Oct. 12-14 in the shadows of the otherworldly Joshua Tree National Park. This three-day festival unites the overwhelming spirit of desert freedom, potent live music and a family friendly atmosphere to create a magical oasis for music lovers. Performances alternate on two stages located inside the shaded music bowl so you never miss a beat. The magnificent o u t d o o r setting, creative Kidsville schedule, wide spectrum of yoga classes and a global retail market further inspire, intrigue and entice festival goers of all music tastes. Discover your new favorite band and dozens of new friends in the magical Mojave. The line up this year includes the truly transcendent experimental super-group featuring Steve Kimock (Zero, KVHW), Bernie Worrell (P-Funk, Talking Heads), Wally Ingram (David Lindley, Sheryl Crow) & Andy Hess (Black Crowes, Govt Mule). Grammy award winner Anders Osborne (from scorched earth rock to heartfelt sweetness) will grace the stage, as will Howlin’ Rain (ferocious, impassioned rock n’ roll), Sean Hayes (uber soulful songsmith), Revoltaire (gut rattling psychedelic blues), Musketeer Gripweed (rousing revival time), Birds of Chicago (bewitching classic soul), and Earl Thomas (high wattage electro blues). Amy LaVere & Shannon Mcnally (alt-country angels), the Dead Winter Carpenters (roots infused high energy Americana), Professor Burns & the Lilac Field (poetic and rootsy ala Woody Guthrie), DJ Jeremy Sole (blues revival remix set), and Tim Easton (troubadour extraordinaire) bring their talents to the high desert. Rounding out the roster are the Shook Twins (angelic harmonies), Trevor Green (mesmerizing multi instrumentalist), Shovelman (psychedelic folktronic blues) & the

California Honeydrops (joyous musical gumbo). Full line-up, schedule, and festival info can be found here: www.joshuatreemusicfestival. com. Founded in 2003 by music enthusiasts and run on corporate-free, community centric power, JTMF captures the DIY funkiness of the high desert artisan enclave of Joshua Tree, turning rusty junk into striking art, old trailers into stages, and a shaded stretch of campground near the infamous national park into a spectacular live music setting. Focusing on up-and-coming artists, you will see artists before they become big; from Deer Tick to Tro m b o n e Shorty, Edward Sharpe to Brett Dennen, the Avett Brothers to Toubab Krewe, Tra m p l e d by Turtles to the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and more. JTMF is produced by a family of friends and funsters convinced that music is the soul of life, and that art enriches and saves lives. The festival is constructed around one Music Bowl, flanked by two alternating stages. “It’s the combination of the setting, the music, and the people that leads to epiphany moments,” said English. By design, “we’ve created our spaces so that people spend more time together, and you don’t miss any bands.” There is no nosebleed section, no white tents, and no yellow-jacketed security detail. Instead, there’s instant community and nonstop interaction, as people congregate under billowing shade of cloth, moving from stage to stage and catching delicious musical moments. This is an intimate affair splashed with “conversation stopping” golden sunsets over distant rugged mountains and all-night desertwalkabouts. The desert is freedom, music is power, and community is crucial. Tap into this magical trifecta and get your tickets now. www.joshuatreemusicfestival. com/tickets.htm

The parties were held at various Palm Springs locations - LuLu’s and Hunter’s with the wrap party at the new Encore. The attendance this year was the best ever with a more diverse crowd coming to the festival. The Sunday night showing brought the actors, producers, directors, writers and film crew on stage after the film for a Q&A. Questions from the audience included the time spent making the film, the costs and where they will be going next. Each member on stage was asked to tell of their upcoming projects. Other film producers, actors and directors gathered at an afterparty at Encore along with theatre attendants. Many were discussing next year’s LBGT Film Festival. Story and photo by Pat Krause

Award Winning Comedy “The Clean House” To Open Season At Groves Cabin Theatre MORONGO VALLEY, CA - Groves Cabin Theatre will open their 2012 – 2013 season on Saturday, Sept. 29, with Sarah Ruhl’s award winning comedy “The Clean House.” The show will be performed Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. for four weekends through Oct. 21. When all you want is a clean house, beware. Someone just may air your dirty laundry. Lane and her husband Charles, a pair of

busy, high-powered doctors hire Matilde, a young Brazilian woman, to clean their home. Matilde is depressed from the recent deaths of her parents, whom she describes as the funniest people in Brazil. Her mother died laughing from a joke her father told, and afterward, he shot himself, so Matilde came to America to clean houses. As it turns out, she hates to clean. But Lane’s sister Virginia loves to clean, so Virginia cleans, while

Matilde thinks up jokes in her quest for the world’s funniest, and together they find out, via a pair of sexy black panties among the newly washed clothes, that Lane’s husband Charles is cheating on her. Charles, it seems, has fallen in love with Ana, an older woman on whom he performed a mastectomy. Yet this play, which looks to be venturing into classic sitcom territory, ends up boldly challenging many

“The Clean House” stereotypes. Out of this situation come unexpected alliances, revelations about the past, dirty jokes told in Portuguese, and some wacky behavior driven by extreme love. And despite its frank dealing with cancer and adultery, the play is not about either, as five people open up to life in ways they couldn’t have dreamed of. In Sarah Ruhl’s paean to healing and forgiveness, the characters shed old patterns and expectations and embrace the feeling of seeking perfection, while letting go of the

compulsion to reach it. “The Clean House” won the 2004 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, awarded yearly to the best Englishlanguage play by a woman, and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2005. It has received glowing reviews from many critics: Variety called it a “…wondrously mad and moving work…” and Charles Isherwood of The NY Times dubbed it a deeply romantic comedy, “…visionary, tinged with fantasy, extravagant in feeling, maybe a little nuts.” Talented and popular

director Wendy Cohen directs a cast of award-winning Groves favorites featuring Vicki Montgomery as Lane, Joy Groves as Virginia, Julie Scott as Matilde, Dennis Priest as Charles, Anja Homberg as Ana, and Lorrie Brandon as the enthusiastic waiter. Darin Eldridge handles lighting and sound engineering. Groves Cabin Theatre has won numerous Desert Theatre League awards for its high quality productions. The tiny 22-seat theater offers one of the most intimate theatrical experiences in the world—that experience having been described as being, “like being a fly on the wall, witnessing real live happening before my eyes.” The limited seating means early reservations are a must. “The Clean House” plays Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. from Saturday, Sept. 29, through Sunday, Oct. 21. Groves Cabin Theatre is located at 8768 Desert Willow Trail in Morongo Valley north of Highway 62. Tickets for all seats are $12. For reservations
