Crime Stats Released in DHS Good news for local residents

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA - City Manager Rick Daniels announced that Part One Crimes, major crimes of rape, burglary, car theft, murder, attempted murder and other violent crimes are down 46.5 percent year to date (2012 compared to 2011). Of those, the most violent crimes are down 28 percent. “This is the result of the Community Policing Initiative, Citizen Police Academies, Neighborhood Crime Watch, and other citizen engagement in crime eradication that started under former Police Chief Patrick Williams and

has been expanded by Police Chief Kate Singer. It is also directly related to adding 15 police officers since 2007, with new patrol cars, computers, crime scene tools, training and other modern technologies,” Daniels said. “The most important element in the crime rate reduction is that citizens are engaged and are assisting the police in protecting their neighborhoods.” Police Chief Kate Singer will present these statistics and their detail to the Public Safety Commission at their Thursday night meeting.

More Road Improvements DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – Granite Construction Company has completed another phase of workthis week installing asphalt berms along Mesquite Avenue between Hacienda Avenue and Sixth Street, and along Third and Fourth Streets between Mesquite and Ocotillo. Three single-family homes along the 66600 block of Third Street have been damaged by recent flash floods over the past two weeks. More thunderstorms are predicted and it’s hoped that the new asphalt berms will prevent future flooding to those homes.

Goodbye Desert View Nuisance DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – The city is pleased to announce that after years of being a nuisance to Code Enforcement Officers and the community the substandard structure located at 66191 Desert View Avenue has been demolished and the property has been returned to a developable parcel. DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA - The city council implemented a two year long process to reform pensions at a city council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 4. They adopted resolutions reducing public employee pension costs. The resolutions implement two years of labor negotiations with the City’s three bargaining units -Teamsters, Police Officers Association and the unrepresented. New public safety employees will pay the California Employee Retirement System (CalPERS) a determined employee contribution of eight percent cost of the pensions and other new City employees will pay a seven percent employee contribution. The city will continue to pay the CalPERS employer contribution. New public safety employees will be required to wait until 55 instead of 50 to retire and then receive three percent of their highest year salary multiplied by their years of service. Remaining employees will have to wait until 60 instead of 55 to retire and will get two percent of their highest year salary instead of previously established 2.70 percent multiplied by the years of service. PUBLIC SAFETY:

From Aug. 2011 to Aug. 2012, major crime (part 1 crime) has dropped nearly 46.5% in Desert Hot Springs; due in part to an increase in community policing and neighborhood watch programs. This is an effort by the City, in association with community activism, to reduce crime and create a safe environment for families in Desert Hot Springs.

City of Desert Hot Springs, working in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies, has undertaken initiatives to either destroy, remove or close buildings/structures which are a haven for gang-related activities. The Star’s Desert By Frances Allen

DHS Music Festival Back On Track For years, if you asked what came to mind when Desert Hot Springs was mentioned you would get a disparaging answer, if you received an answer at all. Now, thanks to the progressive leadership of Desert Hot Springs Mayor Yvonne Parks and

her equally committed team of City Council members, your answer would more likely be one that acknowledged the controlled growth and social improvements of this dynamic city on the northwestern side of I-10 in the Coachella Valley. But, the journey hasn’t been without its pitfalls, some of them quite expensive for this city of low(er) cost housing, convenience stores and fast-food restaurants. The most ambitious project, a World Music and Wellness Festival, was planned to expose and capitalize on the health benefits of the city’s healing waters. Good idea; and along came a concert promoter who talked up his internationallyrecognized credentials and offered to produce a Reggie concert headlining the son of the Reggie icon, Bob Marley. There was no bidding on alternative proposals and the promoter dazzled the city to the tune of a $250,000 advance fee. You know the rest; it’s a too familiar story. No concert, no producer and no money. But the city learned its lesson and has created a seven-person advisory committee to vet any new music festival proposals; and they have taken a tougher line. Two applications have already been rejected, plus applicants must now show where they will get the money to put on the concert. This issue of a financially-secure promoter appears to be the stumbling block, albeit a reasonable one. After being burned once, city leaders have said that they would not spend any additional money on a festival. However, all is not lost. Efforts are underway behind the scenes to obtain appropriate corporate sponsorship for a World Music and Wellness Festival. It may not be the sound of Reggie that will be heard, but the jingling of money pouring into the public till will make its own music to the city.

One of the more successful of these diverse festivals is “Cinema Diverse,” Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Presented by the non-profit Palm Springs Cultural Center, the festival will be screened Sept. 20-23 at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs and will feature 22 full-length films. In addition, some 38 ‘shorts’ will also be shown. Individual tickets are $13, with three tiers of passes, including an all-access pass at $149, which includes all special events and all festival screenings.

It’s no coincidence that the Coachella Valley is arguably home to more festivals, whether film, music or food, than can be found in any other comparable geographic area. Part of the reason is the Valley tolerance for diversity of life styles and countries of origin.

Maybe the Desert has become festival-ed out. Originally set for three weeks beginning Sept. 9, Carnival Palm Springs, which promoters billed as a gathering of bands and other events geared to younger tourists, will not take place this year. The stated reason: the promoter that PS Resorts was dealing with was unable to produce an acceptable program by the time allotted. A non-profit organization, PS Resorts, which is made up of Palm Springs-area hotels, had earmarked $260,000 for the Carnival. This money had been provided pursuant with PS Resorts’ agreement with the City of Palm Springs that gave PS Resorts about half the hotel taxes and resort collected by the city in exchange for sponsoring events to support tourism. Carnival Palm Springs had been expected to generate $1.5 million in economic boost to the Valley’s economy. But the money will not be wasted. Some of the more than a quarter-million dollars of PS Resorts’ money will be transferred into the Forever Marilyn budget, the muchviewed, 26-foot tall Marilyn Monroe statue in downtown Palm Springs. Cost associated with this tourist attraction, which also featured a Marilyn Monroe movie series featuring four of her movies, will exceed $125,000 when all is tallied, with PS Resorts paying about half. Other than Marilyn Monroe, the rest of the money will be spent on events such as the 2013 World’s Championship Chili Cook-off and other attractions of national interest. As for the Carnival - if the Coachella Music Festival and Stagecoach leave you wanting more - PS Resorts reports that it is planning a similarlythemed event for next year.

Great American Beer Fest, Rocky Mountain High, Most Expensive Hotels, Bed Bugs By Sherman Fridman

Great American Beer Festival

Ask anyone what city brews the most beer in the country and they will probably name St. Louis, Boston or San Francisco. They would be wrong, the correct answer is Denver. For the past four years the Mile High City has been giving an alternative meaning to the phrase ‘Rocky Mountain High’ with its hosting the Denver Beer Fest, a nine-day celebration (Oct. 5-13) of the city’s thriving microbrew culture, which culminates with a two-day event known as the Great American Beer Festival.

Most Expensive Hotels in the World are in Sardinia, Italy Here is a Jeopardy question: “It is the most expensive Luxury Hotel in the world.” If you answered “What is the London’s Dorchester Hotel,” “Hong Kong’s Mandarin Hotel,” or “Singapore’s Raffles Hotel” you would be incorrect. In a recent global survey of average rates for a standard double room spanning the period June through August 2012, one luxury hotel booking company found that the Mediterranean island of Sardinia is home to the five most expensive hotels in the world. The Le Dune hotel - situated in Santa Margherita di Paula, a seaside resort along Sardinia’s coast - easily scored the top spot with an average rate of $2,529 per night for a standard double room. This ‘rack rate’ easily surpassed the top-ten list’s nine runners-up. The Royal Mansour in Marracech, Morocco ($2,060) and the Hotel Pitizzara in Sardinia’s Porto Cervo ($2,060) were second and third respectively. They were followed by Sardinia’s Villa del Parco ($2,031); the Amankora in Butan ($1,910); Hotel Cala di Volpe in Sardinia ($1,904); Hotel Romazzino in Sardinia ($,1,850); Maia Luxury Resort and Spa located in Anse Louis, Seychelles ($1,692); Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, Australia ($1,665) and, coming in at a relative bargain, Lizard Island on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, rounded at the top-ten list of most expensive summertime hotel rates at $1,651

National Park in a hot air balloon. With all it has to offer, it’s easy to see why visitors are high on Colorado.

Don’t Bug Me

As frequent travelers know, bed bugs don’t discriminate on the basis of room rate or how many gold stars a hotel has. Believing that you are your first like of defense against these little blood-suckers, here are four simple ways to improve the chances that you, and not uninvited insects, don’t get more than what you

Le Dune hotel - situated in Santa Margherita di Paula pad for. First: inspect bedding upon check-in for evidence of bugs. Second: Keep your luggage off the floor; hang clothes, do not put them in drawers. Third: Travel with a proper sized (3 oz. if it’s in your airplane carry-on luggage) bug repellent. Fourth: Wash your clothes and inspect luggage immediately after a trip. Now, go have a good trip.

High On Colorado The Great American Beer Festival has become so popular - attracting some 50,000 beer lovers annually - that public tickets to this year’s two-day event were sold out in less than an hour of going on sale. It is even reported that one profiteer was trying to sell his $65-ticket on eBay for the you-must-be-drunk-sum of $50,000. Considered as the most prestigious and coveted beer competition in the nation, it is also the world’s largest beer celebration with a Guinness (what else?) world record for the most beers ever made available for tasting at a single event – some 2,375 difference American brews from 500 breweries last year. As impressive as those numbers are, they pale in comparison to this year, as the 2012 Great American Beer Festival will showcase 580 breweries with an estimated 2,700 different beers available for tasting. Also returning for a fourth year, this year, the citywide suds celebration known as the Denver Beer Fest will sponsor Meet the Brewer Nights, beer-paired dinners, brewer versus brewer competitions and the first-ever Denver Beet Fest official Denver Beer Crawl. So if you have a thirst for beer, or just want to try something out of the ordinary, Denver’s the place to be starting Oct. 5. But keep in mind; we’re not talking bottles here, unless you can work your own deal. The exotic brews on tap (about 36,000 gallons worth) are served in one oz. tasting cups.

If you want to clear your head from the beer haze that will surely be engulfing Denver in October, a fall trip to Colorado is also a good time to explore some of the scenic wonders to be found among the color-drenched trees in this Rocky Mountain state. From fishing and horseback riding to soaring through fiery red treetops on one of the state’s 14 approved zip lines, there are activities galore awaiting the visitor to Colorado in the fall.

Chamber of Commerce

Disability Reform, Workers’ Comp, Job Creator and Killer Bills CalChamber-Supported Disability Access Reform Awaits Action by Governor A California Chamber of Commerce-supported bill that curbs lawsuit abuse regarding the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) while promoting increased compliance with disabled accessibility building codes throughout the state, is on the Governor’s desk. SB 1186 (Steinberg; D-Sacramento/Dutton; R-Rancho Cucamonga) is a “win-win” situation for the State of California. The bill was developed over the last four months in discussions by the authors, their staffs and a working group including the CalChamber. Among other things, SB 1186: • Prohibits prelitigation “demands for money” by attorneys. • Puts into place new provisions to prevent “stacking” of multiple claims to increase statutory damages. • Reduces statutory damages and provides litigation protections for defendants who correct violations. • Establishes priorities for the California Commission on Disabled Accessibility that promote and facilitate disability access compliance. California has 40 percent of the nation’s ADA lawsuits but only 1 percent of the country’s disabled population.

Action Needed: The CalChamber is urging its members to contact the Governor.

Workers’ Comp Reform: CalChamber Urges Members to Ask Governor to Sign Bill California Chamber of Commerce-supported legislation that reduces costs to employers to support needed benefit increases to injured workers and potentially reduces underlying costs

to the system is awaiting action by the Governor. SB 863 (De León; D-Los Angeles) represents a balanced approach to issues within California’s workers’ compensation system. It provides employers with cost-saving proposals that reduce frictional costs while providing injured workers with needed benefit increases. Additionally, the administration has committed to an expeditious regulatory process that seeks to achieve the full extent of the projected savings associated with SB 863. In an Aug. 31 news release, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. commended the Legislature for “an extraordinary workers’ compensation reform bill that helps injured workers and averts an imminent crisis of skyrocketing rates. Again, Republicans have joined Democrats to work together— perhaps, a portent of good things to come.” CalChamber recognizes that the California workers’ compensation system is on an unsustainable trajectory. In particular, cost pressures in the system have mitigated much of the savings realized in the last round of reforms. As a result, California employers’ premiums are increasing as the overall cost of the system continues to rise. CalChamber also acknowledges that benefits for some injured workers are inadequate and, therefore, supports a benefit increase where appropriate. SB 863 addresses both of these issues: it offers proposals that reduce system costs in order to offset a benefit increase. Specifically, SB 863 addresses the lien epidemic, shortens the medicallegal process, implements an independent medical review system and streamlines the permanent disability schedule. These proposals reduce frictional costs by reducing delays in the system and litigation. Additionally, the bill provides injured workers an increase in permanent disability benefits. CalChamber, however, has been concerned that the savings in SB 863 may not be adequate to match the benefit increase. Savings projections of this bill by Bickmore Risk Services and the Workers’Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau both show a small margin between the projected savings and costs associated with benefit increases. SB 863 includes many proposals that could not

september 13 - 19, 2012

be priced because they are not legislatively selfexecuting. The savings from these proposals will be a function of an effective regulatory implementation. As such, CalChamber sought and received a commitment from the administration to timely and effectively implement the regulations critical to achieving the savings contained in the reform proposal, as well as devoting the necessary resources and people to get the job done. This commitment gives CalChamber and employers the certainty needed to support SB 863. SB 863, along with the administration’s commitment, meets CalChamber’s goal of preserving a balanced workers’ compensation system that provides fair benefits to injured workers at a low cost to employers, while minimizing friction to the system.

Action Needed: The CalChamber is urging its members to contact the Governor.

Seven Job Creator Bills Pass to Governor’s Desk Seven California Chamber of Commercesupported job creator bills are on their way to Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s desk. The Governor has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the bills: • AB 890 (Olsen; R-Modesto) Reduces Regulatory Burdens — Improves safety and roadway conditions that expedite goods and people movement by exempting roadway projects from the California Environmental Quality Act process. • AB 1612 (Lara; D-Los Angeles) Administrative Practices — Promotes government accountability and a transparent process by requiring proposed new residential building standards to include the cost of compliance, potential benefits of the proposed standard and the underlying model used to achieve those estimates. • AB 2026 (Fuentes; D-Sylmar) Film Credit Extension — Protects jobs in the film industry by extending the film tax credit for two years, until July 1, 2017. • AB 2245 (Smyth; R-Santa Clarita) CEQA Reform — Maximizes state funding and promotes tourism by exempting bike lanes in existing roadways from the California Environmental Quality Act Process. • SB 1099 (Wright; D-Inglewood) Creates Regulatory Certainty — Provides certainty for business by creating a predictable and easy-to-track implementation schedule for new regulations and provides language of new regulations online for easier access.

• SB 1161 (Padilla; D-Pacoima) Internet-Based Services — Provides certainty and creates a level playing field for California business by assuring that Voice over Internet Protocol- and Internet Protocol-enabled services will not be regulated at the state level but rather at the federal level. • SB 1402 (Lieu; D-Torrance) Better Workforce Development — Helps improve alignment of the state’s workforce needs and education resources by reauthorizing the Economic and Workforce Development program within the California Community College system.

‘Job Killer’ Bills Awaiting Action by Governor In the closing days of the legislative year, four California Chamber of Commerce-opposed “job killer” bills passed the Legislature. The following bills await action by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.: AB 2346 (Butler; D-Los Angeles) Increased Costs and Unreasonable Requirements — Could increase the price of food and force growers to move their crop production to other states and countries, thereby hurting California exports, by creating excessive, unnecessary new rules regarding heat illness prevention with unreasonable consequences for violations. AB 1186 (Skinner; D-Berkeley)/AB 1532 (John A. Pérez; D-Los Angeles)/ SB 535 (De León; D-Los Angeles)/ Illegal Tax Increase — Increases energy costs, including fuel prices, on consumers and businesses by allocating funds from an illegal tax to various programs that are not necessary to costeffectively implement the market-based trading mechanism under AB 32. Two “job killer” bills passed the Legislature in July and were signed by the Governor just a few days later.

Business

Angel Investors Enjoy Big Investment Returns Seeking angel investors By Reno Fontana The word “angel” conjures up all kinds of images. The mere mention of the word paints a mental picture of a spiritual being dressed in white and attending to the commands of God. To others, it’s a word that has been used in at least 130,000 songs worldwide. One definition of the word “angel” means “safety in times of trouble” and offers “hope in a time of difficulty.” It should come as no surprise that the financial term “angel investor” implies to someone that a company owner believes is heaven sent. Angel investors almost always come in and shore up a company with a bridge loan for debt assistance and business expansion in its formative months and years. Angel investors (or business angels as they are also known) are usually affluent individuals or cash flush corporations who are geared to assist start-up companies with money. New companies frequently need several rounds of financing while they bring their product or service to market. Salary’s, accounting and legal

fees, advertising, office rental costs and fixed monthly operating expenses all require an abundance of dollars to keep a company running in its initial phase. That’s where angel investors play a key role. Like comic book super heroes, angel investors build a financial firewall around a company to protect it from lack of operating funds during the early days. Angel investors do, however, expect returns significantly higher than what is generally offered today through Certificate of Deposit or Bond rates that yield 1.5 – 2 percent. Angel investors generally seek an annual return on investment (ROI) of 15 percent or greater. While that may sound like an expensive rate at which to borrow money, it’s actually very reasonable to the new business owner. Even with a great business plan, if a company is not properly funded, it could fail before it has a chance to meet its full potential. Some angel investors may choose to take an equity stake in a company. That means the investor may decide to buy a percentage ownership in the company instead of making a loan, hoping that the company’s value will increase dramatically more than the 15 – 40 percent annual ROI most angel investors are satisfied to receive. A case in point is Peter Thiel. Thiel is the founder of PayPal, the first online Internet payment processor. Thiel made more than a billion dollars when he sold PayPal to eBay in 2002. But in its beginning stage, PayPal almost went out of business because VISA was going to discontinue clearing PayPal’s transactions through the credit card giant’s bank center. On the day PayPal was going to close its doors forever, VISA agreed to give PayPal an additional year and a half while they developed a better payment system. The decision by VISA to help PayPal continue for another 18 months literally changed Thiel’s life. Today PayPal is a household name. After selling PayPal and becoming a billionaire, he heard of a new Internet company that was broke and struggling to stay afloat. Thiel saw the possibilities of this unique service this Internet startup company was providing so he invested half a million dollars as an angel investor. This year, seven years after his initial half million dollar investment into that young company, Facebook, rewarded Thiel with a billion dollar payday. Angel investments can be in an amount from one thousand dollars to the billions of dollars. Angel investors can be a neighbor next door in Desert Hot Springs or a Wall Street tycoon. There is an abundance of investment capital in the world today waiting to be loaned or invested into companies with a vision and business owners who will put in long

hours to make the dream a reality. My last thought is this: Angel investors literally change lives of everyday people. By supporting startup companies, business owners can hire more employees. Those employees then take their paychecks and spend in their local communities. Communities become more robust, towns become more optimistic and confidence in tomorrow surges higher. Yes, angel investors enjoy big profits.

But they should also be applauded for making big changes in people’s lives. And that, when you think about it, is a Bible lesson. We all should try to be our brother’s keeper, just like an angel investor does for a company, its owner and the people who work there. For further information on how to become an angel investor or if you are currently an angel investor seeking projects, contact renofontana@yahoo. com.

Center Aids Assistance Program Is Calling All Angels The Announces Angel Program Kickoff Party Marks the Beginning of the Valley’s Season of Giving PALM SPRINGS – AIDS Assistance Program’s 17th Annual Jeannette Rockefeller Angel Program Kickoff Party will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 5 - 7 p.m., at a private residence in Rancho Mirage. There is no fee for the event, but attendance indicates a willingness to participate in the Angel Program. RSVP is required, and the location will be given upon confirmation of attendance. “This is a very important evening for our organization, because it represents the kickoff to the season of giving here in the desert,” said Mark Anton, Executive Director of AIDS Assistance Program (AAP). “We currently have more than 500 clients who rely on us for food twice each month, and two hundred people are on our waiting list for services. That list includes some of our most desperate neighbors who struggle to maintain their strength and well-being. Donations from the community are critical so that we can continue providing these services and hopefully reduce the waiting list.” The Angel Kickoff party is an annual gathering of those who believe in the mission of

AIDS Assistance Program. All funds generated through the Angel Program go directly to support AAP’s food voucher program, and help contribute to the $50,000 needed each month to continue those services. The organization always encourages new supporters, and appreciates those members who have remained dedicated to the Angel Program throughout the years. Open to all, the Angel Program Kickoff Party provides a chance for people to learn more about AAP, and also serves as a thank you for continuing supporters. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. This year’s party will feature the music of desert-based classic rock and pop group Dreams. Dreams is comprised of singer/ guitarist/pianist Willy Bonnar and singer/ guitarist Nicky Vallee. The duo released a self-titled recording of original songs in May, and their music pays tribute to artists such as Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, and more. Since its founding in 1991, the AIDS Assistance Program of Palm Springs remains dedicated to providing nutritional support

to improve the quality of the lives of those surviving HIV/AIDS. Initiated by a small group of concerned citizens, led by the late Gloria Greene and Jeannette Rockefeller, AAP provided meals to members of the community with low incomes and suffering with HIV/AIDS. Since then, the AIDS Assistance Program’s client roster has grown to approximately 500 clients. For more information, please call 760/325-8481 or visit www.aidsassistance.org.

Living Longer

Tibetan Anti-Aging Exercises Now Available In Free eBook By Art Kunkin, (Mr. Life Extension) I am very pleased to report that my readers can now obtain from me a free copy of “Ancient Secret of The Fountain of Youth,” the valuable book of antiaging exercises I have been reviewing in this column. This week I discovered that while various editions of this book are still being sold on the Internet for prices as high as $29.95, several sources are also making this book available as a free computer file. Obviously the book is no longer in copyright. Therefore, if you send an email to me (artkunkin@gmail.com) with the subject line reading “Fountain of Youth” or phone me at 760-792-2032 (no later than October 1, 2012, please), I will have a free ebook emailed to you. The book includes many useful photographs of the exercises that we have not been able to include in this newspaper. For the benefit of those who have not read my previous columns, this book was translated into many languages in the 1980s and 1990s, selling over two million copies throughout the world. Testimonials by readers relate that the daily practice of these exercises improves vision, darkens gray hair, relieves arthritis pain, results in weight loss and even improves memory. The book has been praised by such celebrities as actor Martin Sheen, Medical Doctor Bernie S. Siegel and author John Gray. “Ancient Secret of The Fountain of Youth” tells how author Peter Kelder met an aged British Army officer in the 1930s who had heard of a Tibetan monastery where aging could be reversed. This “Colonel Bradford” returned to India after his retirement, located the monastery and came back years later as a much younger and vigorous person. The Colonel then established a “Himalaya Club” where he taught the first five rituals to Peter Kelder. The sixth rite was only taught to selected older members of the Himalaya Club. The first exercise or ritual for anti-aging consists of a spinning said to improve the performance of the endocrine glands. It is believed in the Eastern metaphysical tradition that the vital endocrine glands correspond to invisible “rotating energy vortexes” in the human body (termed “chakras” in Sanskrit). These chakras are said to slow down and deteriorate as a result of aging but can be brought back to optimum health by the first Tibetan ritual of rotating the entire body as well as through the specific muscle stretches done in rituals two through five. The instruction for the first Tibetan anti-aging exercise is to stand erect with arms outstretched and horizontal to the floor, right palm up and left palm down. Then slowly spin, men clockwise and women counter-clockwise. While spinning, I recommend chanting the following Longevity Mantra to positively influence one’s subconscious: “I can and I will add many, many years to my life because I am strong, conscious and have many, many goals to complete. My life is healthy, happy and prosperous.” My experience is that repeating this powerful mantra four times, silently or voiced, is a good way of defining the required 21 rotations without counting. Since I presented the second to fourth exercises

in previous columns, and all are available in the free ebook, I move ahead here to describing the fifth ritual. (The sixth and final rite, I will teach and discuss only in the class I am starting on September 13. See below). To perform the fifth rite, place your body facedown to the floor, preferably on a rug or prayer mat, straightening your arms so that only your palms and flexed toes (no shoes) are touching the floor with the rest of the body almost, but not quite, touching the floor. In other words, your hands will be supporting your body off the floor. Throughout this rite, the hands and feet should each be spaced about two feet apart, and the arms and legs should be kept straight. Now throw the head back as far as possible. Then, bending the hips, bring the body up into an inverted “V.” At the same time, bring the chin forward, tucking it against the chest. That’s all there is to it. Return to the original position and start the rite all over again…Breathe in deeply as you raise the body. Breathe out fully as you lower it.” In answer to the question of how many times each exercise is performed, Colonel Bradford suggested that each rite be done, very slowly, three times a day for the first week. “Then every week that follows, increase the daily repetitions by two until you are performing each rite 21 times a day. In other words, during the second week perform each rite five times; the third week perform each rite seven times; the fourth week perform each rite nine times daily, and so on. In 10 weeks time you will be doing the full number of 21 times per day.” “If you have difficulty practicing the first rite, the whirling one, as many times as you do the others, then simply do it as many times as you can without getting dizzy.” “There are a few people who find it difficult to spin around at all. Usually, if they omit the spinning and perform the other rites for four to six months, they find that they can start to handle the spinning too.” I plan to hold the Living Longer classes where I will teach the Tibetan rituals for anti- aging every Thursday night starting September 13th from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Meditation Building at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, 59700 29 Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, California. Please phone me at 760-792-2032 to register, leaving your phone number and email address. In these classes, I will also be teaching an unusual and profound meditation as well as other important subjects relating to life extension, health, prosperity and consciousness development. A free download of a magazine cover story interview with Art about his research into stopping aging is now available at www.alchemyrevealed.com. Art’s eBook, “Life Extension Alchemy: The Secret of Immortality Finally Revealed,” is also available at a reduced sale price of $9 at that website. Art is planning a Free Press

Dining Out

TRIO - Ultra-Chic Dining in Uptown Design District Celebrates Three Years Sept. 22 By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS, CA – TRIO restaurant, located in the heart of the Uptown Design District, offers diners world-class cuisine, a fine art program that benefits local schools and a frequent eater’s rewards program that is unique in the Coachella Valley. My husband, Tom, and I had the pleasure of dining at Trios last week and thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere created by operating partner Tony Marchese and Executive Chef/Co-owner Mark Van Laanen. The two men invested their life’s savings in this dream come true restaurant banking on creating elegant yet simple comfort foods in a hip, contemporary atmosphere. That investment finally is starting to pay off. Marchese and Van Laanen will celebrate their third anniversary on Sept. 22, 2012, and their 60 employees are sure to be busy with the extra fanfare that will enfold with all the drink and food specials they offer. We started our dinner by splitting a Roasted Baby Beet Salad served with mixed greens, pecans, blue cheese, citrus sections and Balsamic vinaigrette ($9). It was absolutely delicious. It was so good that we later went to the grocery store and bought beets, blue cheese and pecans to add to our regular salads at home. For our entrees, we shared their Scallops, served pan-seared yet rare with a luscious Pinot Noir Pomegranate Reduction and Cajun Dressing to give it a kick. The scallops were accompanied by Couscous and seasonal Vegetable ($21). My husband loved their St. Louis Style Ribs with a Chipotle Rub and their House Made Barbeque Sauce served with Sweet Potato Fries and Slaw. My husband usually smothers his French fries with ketchup but said these fries didn’t need anything - they were that good. Yummy sides to choose from include Creamed Spinach, Mac N Cheese, Blue Lake Green Beans, Sour Cream Mash, French Fries and of course, their stand alone Sweet Potato Fries, all available for $5 each. For dessert we shared a sinfully delicious Trio Nut Torte ($8) made with hazelnuts, walnuts and pecans. Other super yummy desserts not on the menu but offered by servers at each table are their Lemon Tarts ($8), Chocolate and/or Carmel

Fine Cuisine At Trio Sundaes ($6) and complimentary House Made Birthday Cupcakes prepared by Chef Van Laanen himself. In addition to their regular fine dining menu, you can opt for their PrixFixe Menu from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., where for the reasonable price of $19 you get a three-course meal from their Appetizer or Salad selections and entrees such as a Roasted Half Chicken, Yankee Pot Roast, Australian Sole and the to-die-for St. Louis Style Spare Ribs. If you’re a vegetarian, choose from a Butternut Squash Ravioli, Rigatoni Al Forno or Stacked Veggie Burger. If you’re hankering for some simple comfort food, try their Fresh Fish Sandwich or Trios Mac and 5 Cheese options. Remember to save room because you also get your choice of one of their Sundaes, Bread Pudding or daily desserts, so ask your server. In addition to the PrixFixe menu, Trios offers take-out customers a bottle of their house wines by Trinity Oaks (Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Grigio) for $10 a bottle. If that wasn’t enough convenience then how about joining their Frequent Eaters dining rewards program where they match every dollar spent with one point. The

program is free to join and TRIOS offers it as a way of saying thanks for customer loyalty. Spend your points at trendy Uptown Design District participating shops, at the Viceroy Estrella Spa or with Worldview Travel Certificates. Additional benefits include email announcements of special events, offers and promotions exclusively for program members. On your birthday, get a free cocktail or appetizer on the house! If all the menu options and special deals are not enough to impress, then perhaps a little history about the building and the artwork they exhibit will. The property has a bank vault encased in concrete and steel at the front entrance with a wall safe and a time capsule dating back to the landmark building that was once an Old Las Palmas bank. From opening day in September 2009, TRIO Restaurant has become a place where residents of Palm Springs eat and drink. With a mid-century multi-room space, complimented by progressive furnishings including a five foot rubber chandelier in one of the formal rooms, TRIO’s American modern flare and Midwestern fare has impressed diners and visitors to the Desert. “When you walk in the door it’s all about comfort, the surroundings and the food,” said Marchese “Our goal has always been to create a restaurant with a unique energy, where anyone can come dine two to three times a week. We are

a proud part of the community in which we love, work, eat and play.” Marchese and Van Laanen participate in charitable events like sold out dinners to support music in education and The Art Institute of Palm Springs High School, Dine Out for Life, the Palm Springs International and Short Film Festivals and Hollywood’s Biggest Night Oscar Party supporting AIDS Assistance Program. In the past three years, they have given more than $20,000 to the Palm Springs High School art program alone. TRIO Restaurant is open daily, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch, generous cocktail hour specials from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and dinner starting at 4 p.m. Special $19, 3-course prix fixe menu available from 11am to 2pm and from 4 to 6pm. Mark Stephenson - Nature-Infused Art Photographs Made With Silver and Gold By Jackie Devereaux SKY VALLEY, CA – How can an artist be so technically based in his process and yet produce works that are so simple and pure? That’s the question I asked myself and other art aficionados in the Desert about Mark Stephenson’s work. When you first gaze at his grasses, plants and cattails series of photographs, you immediately realize that anything resembling a photograph has long disappeared and what has evolved is an entirely new form of art. One also gets a sense of his poetic genius in the simplicity and purity in each of his works of art. After getting to know him it came as no surprise that his background in poetry, Eastern philosophies and meditation, along with his technical training in photography have all merged to create a unique art form coveted by collectors nationwide. Stephenson, 55, lives in Sky Valley with his newly adopted, brindle-colored, mix breed puppy, Foshi, w h i ch m e ans lion/dog or the lion that guards the Buddha in the Chinese language. He designed, built and decorated his Spanish-style home on six acres of desert land with spectacular “Grasses” views of the San Jacinto and San Gorgonio mountains. Stephenson was born on an Air Force base in Del Rio, Texas but was spared the typical military brat lifestyle of constant uprooting because his father, an Air Force fighter pilot, was killed when he was 18 months old. After his father’s death, he was

“Golden Joshua Tree” raised by his mother, Elizabeth Stephenson, an artist in her own right, in Arizona, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Los Angeles before he settled and built a home in Sky Valley in 1993. “I never thought of myself as an artist. I wrote a lot when young and had an enlightened principal at Echo Park Elementary School in Elysian Heights, a gangbanging, mixed culture part of LA. She put me in a gifted program w h e re k i d s i n the 5th and 6th grade got to write speeches and poetry instead of doing math. We’d go to city hall and the Kiwanis club and were encouraged to think out of the box and express ourselves creatively,” Stephenson said during a recent interview at his studio/ home. Stephenson said he worked a variety of jobs before becoming a photographer.

He worked at a coal mine and at an oil company. During these formative years he took an aptitude test that said he’d be a good physiological psychologist, a petroleum engineer or a TV/Film director. “Writing, drama and creative arts sparked my enthusiasm more than anything since I was little. I was blessed with a wonderful Liberal Arts education at Colorado College (Colorado Springs, CO), receiving a BA in English with an emphasis on poetry and modern American Literature in 1979,” he said. Then, while working towards a MA in film at the University of Texas at Austin, he fell in love with still photography, enrolled at Brooks Institute of Photographic Arts and Sciences, the rigorous technical school located in Santa Barbara, receiving a second BA in Photography in 1984, and found his

calling. He is a photographer by profession, but didn’t focus on the fine art aspect until 2004. Before that, he shot scenes for the Santa Barbara News Press as an intern from Brooks where he had “all the film he could shoot” at his disposal plus a stateof-the-art dark room. After the internship at the newspaper, and while still at Brooks, destiny and fate entered his life when he found his mentor in Craig Arness, a critically-acclaimed National Geographic photographer, and the adopted son of James Arness. After Stephenson graduated from Brooks, Arness made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and he joined West Light, a small stock photography company based in West Los Angeles. After those professional years in

agency work, he became inspired by the Orotone work of a late 19th and early 20th centur y photographer, Edward Sheriff Curtis, that he discovered in a Sante Fe, New Mexico art gallery. That innovative process consists of multiple layers which Stephenson has modernized and perfected. “When I first saw Curtis’ Orotone process, I was struck by its stunning beauty and a seed was planted. After much experimenting, I managed to achieve a similar aesthetic but using contemporary media and technology, I am able to realize them in a much larger scale that Curtis ever could. “The images in my Orotone series are captured as black and white negatives on modern film cameras of small, medium and large formats. I scan the negatives with a high-resolution drum, scanner, edit the images with Photoshop and print them with state-of-the-art wide format pigmented inkjet printers over metallic leaf on a hand-textured cradled wood panel, finished with a thick coat of resin. I do all this work myself without the use of labs or assistants,” he said. Stephenson has won 38 photography awards over that past four decades beginning in 1983 and continuing through 2012 with the Chicago Botanic Garden Art

Fair and Gold Coast Art Fair wins. He’s won, placed and been given high honors at the Southwest Art Festival, the Indian Wells Arts Festival, the La Quinta Art Festival, the Rancho Mirage Art Affaire and other shows too numerous to name. “Simply put, Mark’s work is incredible. It’s simple and pure. He is the most accomplished artist in the Desert, if not the entire West Coast,” said art aficionado Rick Pantele of IncredibleArtist.com.

“Castle”

One nice thing about owning your favorite TV series on DVD is the wealth of bonus features that are included in the package. This is true with the complete 4rh season of the crime solving series “Castle” starring Nathan Fillion in the title role and Stana Katic as police detective Beckett. He is a mystery writer who works with her on cases, giving his creative insights into police problem solving. The duo is described as TV’s most unlikely crime-fighting team, but the chemistry works. In this past season Castle’s relationship with Beckett radically changes and there is a final confrontation with a mysterious man who holds all the answers that Beckett has been searching for since her mother was murdered.

The DVD set has all 23 episodes from the past season plus exclusive bonus material including “Fillion & Friends: Castle Goes Radio” which is an exciting chance to follow Nathan Fillion as he makes his long awaited return to guest in

the newest installment of the “Thrilling Adventure and Supernatural Suspense Hour” stage, a.k.a. TASSH, in Los Angeles. But this time he’s not alone as he brings the show’s Molly Quinn and other familiar faces along for some laugh out loud comedy. Fans will get a behind the scenes look as the cast goes through rehearsals and prepares to perform live for a standing room only crowd. Another feature is “Submerged: An In-Depth Look at Stunts“—a behind the scenes look at the creation of a heartstopping car stunt from development to the final product. This bonus also features interviews with the cast about the show’s thrilling stunts. Other extras include Audio Commentary plus deleted scenes and bloopers. The DVD will be in stores on Sept. 11.

“Revenge”

On Aug. 21 the complete first season of “Revenge” came out on DVD, so if you missed any of the episodes, now is your chance to relive every deep, dark secret. If you have never watched the show, it takes place in the Hamptons where almost 20 years earlier the wealthiest elite destroyed a young girl’s life. Now Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) has returned, filled with a quest for revenge and a desire to uncover every deep, dark, dirty secret. Wealth, beauty and power define the residents of New York’s most exclusive community, but one woman will stop at nothing to exact revenge on those who ruined her father’s life. However, even the best laid plans can unravel in the wake of an unexpected love-triangle between Emily, the son of her greatest nemesis (Madeleine Stowe) and a forgotten face from her past. There are oodles of bonus features like “At Home in “The Hamptons” which highlights swank parties and lavish houses which are as much a part of the show as the characters who live there and attend

Another feature that will be especially appealing to the ladies is “Haute Hamptons: Femme Fatale Fashion.” If, as it has been said, ‘clothes make the woman,’ then this feature will give you a glimpse into the secrets of styling the show’s two leading ladies, Emily VanCamp and Madeleine Stowe. Costume designer Jill Ohanneson shares key pieces from both of the series’ femme fatale’s closets as she and the cast discuss what it takes to dress a show for success. (There may be some great success secrets here for the viewer as well.) Other extras include: deleted scenes, bloopers and outtakes, pilot commentary in which creator Mike Kelley and actress Emily VanCamp take viewers through all the details of the pilot episode and music videos with key music from the show like Christina Perry’s “Distance” and Angus & Julie Stone’s “For You.”

California-based Bands Rock Late Summer with Winning Albums Pioneers from the far-flung corners of the universe with superb new album By Robert Kinsler Post-rock electronica pioneers The Album Leaf, Celtic rock heroes The American Wake and alt rock hit makers Smash Mouth come from the far-flung corners of the universe, but are all out with superb new albums.

Artist: The Album Leaf Album: Forward/Return (The Album Leaf)

Leaf also has that rare gift. On its forthcoming EP “Forward/Return” (set for release on Sept. 18) the Jimmy LaValle-led outfit achieves as much emotion with its range of technological sonic tools as many celebrated artists do with traditional instruments. The aptly-titled “Descent” impresses with its driving beat providing counterpoint to haunting melodies. Elsewhere the otherworldly “Images,” riveting “Under the Night” and luxuriant “Low Down” reach similar depths while providing their own unique grooves to entice and thrill listeners. Artist: The American Wake Album: Another Round (Secret Ninja Studios)

Frank LaBlanc and fiddler Robert Keysers offer up dazzling solos while bassist Chris Hatt and drummer Tod Warren lock it all in with solid rhythms. Whether performing up-tempo Celtic rock (“This Pint’s for Mary,” “The 57”), breezy melodic gems (“Hold On,” “Tear Blurry Skies”) or earnest folk (“Old Pine Box,” “The Blessing”), “Another Round” offers up a brew good to the last drop. Tell me more: There are artists who establish their careers with decidedly-heavy and groundbreaking tact, tackling themes such as political strife, romantic loss and suicide. But there is nothing wrong with celebrating the joys of life with a fun-spirited sound and feel-good lyrics. Take “Magic,” the latest release from San Jose, California-bred Smash Mouth. With the quintet’s rewarding mix of pop, ska punk, new wave and melodic rock firmly intact, upbeat tunes such as “Perfect Planet” and “Live to Love Another Day” offer the ideal soundtrack to an endless summer. Steve Harwell’s distinctive voice is primed for the wealth of cheery material, and there is no denying that most of these songs jump out and take hold with a single listen. “Magic” indeed. Astrological Affects

CommonTerry

By Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500

Week of September 13-19, 2012 Sun In Virgo Most Affected is Virgo. The month is now in the sign of Virgo, for Vedic, Leo. For Virgo: All Mercurial themes such as light, electrical impulses, mental agility, communication, comfort with sound and silence, attention to details and wealth will rule supreme until Sept. 22. A more heightened awareness of the written and spoken word, health and the health industry. The best side of Virgo is seen in their gracious manner and their well thought-out strategies as solutions to problems. The key is to know when to behave with confidence, when to let go to allow the child within your heart to have a say and, to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Celebrate this month with respect and action towards the earth beneath you, the earth within you; experience the stealthy strength of Earth poses found in Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Hexahedron (Earth). Best Yantra: The color Gold.

September 15-16 - New Moon In Virgo Most Affected are Virgo and All Earth Signs. For Virgo: The New Moon represents emergence, a new beginning. This New Moon in your sign happens only once a year and it sets the tone for the next twelve months. New opportunities arrive just in time, so be ready. Depending on where you place your focus, there is where the success ratio begins. Begin with your heart’s intention. Try writing down your truest desires, wishes for the good in your life. Trust the Universe to manifest them with your best efforts. For All Signs: A big title-wave of changes begins with other planetary events happening within a short span from one another. This is a good time to start courses of training, starting new health regimes, as it will be possible to have a better focus on your intention. Rather than perfection, focus on improvements. Some changes may feel uncomfortable that may lead to fearfulness. Fear can create loss and regret. Release any doubts or fear by learning or re-visiting breath techniques. In your meditation, ask for what you need and not for what you want. Best Mantra: RAM. Best Colors: Yellow, Marigold or Gold.

September 16 - Mercury Into Libra Most Affected are Libra, Gemini and Virgo. This transit will continue until Oct. 6. For Libra: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses in your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. The sign of Gemini or Virgo may figure more prominently. Words are just words without depth or positive intention behind them. Choose your words carefully to help promote your career or ideas. For Gemini: Positive structure and power can be brought forth in your communications. You may be able to find needed support to your projects now. In order to succeed with this, remain professional. For Virgo: Your focus may be on financial matters, don’t stress over it. Choose calm, be the positive example; show maturity

in anything that should arise. For All Signs: A double edge sword; there are more than one perception to an idea or thought. If you have no fear, you can imagine, create or perceive easily and joyfully. If you choose to doubt yourself or others time is wasted, nothing is manifested. With a concise decision, envision, believe and receive.

September 17 - Pluto Turns Direct Most Affected are Scorpio and Virgo. This transit began on April 10. For Scorpio: The energies of your ruling planet have been inward for a long stretch. Your usual, powerful drive may have been subdued, now it’s back. The best is that this past affect may have brought you opportunity to review, examine your spirituality, emotions and any dark side. For Virgo: Pluto continues it’s time in fellow Earth sign Capricorn until 2024. Your priorities with respects to work and play may have changed for the better as well as how you view romance in your Life. As Pluto turns direct, release old, past ideas, people and plans. For All Signs: Since April, possible increased insecurities or how you handled new, uncovered info is the question. The Good: Secrets or important, useful information that were hidden may have come to light. Now with the planet direct, the opposite affect: Secrets or what is hidden are maintained until the next Pluto retrograde. However, please remember that nothing remains hidden for long.

You Don’t Own Your Smile It’s a gift you give to others By Terrance K. Phillips If the phone doesn’t ring, don’t answer it! Have you ever anticipated something to the point where the actions caused by your anticipation was greater than the event that you were waiting for? We spend a lot of time and energy anticipating something, but oftentimes when it arrives we forget what we were waiting for anyway. Anticipation and anxiety are cousins to fear. Anticipation is just a dream, as this act of anxiety is not real. Anxiety itself doesn’t mean or do anything. It’s neither positive or negative. It’s really only an enhancement to a potential fear. Most of the things people worry about never happen; yet, so much thought, time, energ y, emotion and grief are spent on the fear of anxiety and anticipation. Do we spend an equal amount of time on dreaming, happiness, embracing good thoughts and being cheerful? Some do, some don’t. If we could channel our energy in a more cheerful and positive direction, our lives would

be filled with more love, contentment, pleasure, joy, delight, bliss and enthusiasm. This causes people to smile, laugh and embrace a pleasurable peace within. Your face is a billboard. Placing a smile on it causes others to buy into your delivery; then, they pass it on. You do not own your smile—it’s a gift you give to others. Anxiety is the antithesis of a smile. It takes away your right to live in a positive and constructive moment in time. Anxiety is an adversary and does not support your best interests. The next time you feel the monster of anxiety trying to surface in your day, laugh aloud and think good and positive thoughts. Always remember that you are the Captain of your heart and the Commander of your soul. Te r r a n c e K. Phillips: Internationally Syndicated Columnist and Author of “The DIVORCE DISEASE – Options for a Cure”“HEART ATTACK-ED – Healing a Broken Heart.””KING of CONS” and “Good Morning Nobody.” For more information: www.focalpointbooks.com

On-Going Astrological Affects: Mars In Scorpio Most Affected are Aries, Scorpio and Virgo. This transit began on Aug. 23 will continue until Oct. 6. For Scorpio: Mars continues in your sign infusing more energy into your Life. If you’re not the physical type, you may suddenly feel like joining a gym or start walking on breaks or after work. Or if you are athletic, you may go to the next level. Now is the time to take action. Your sexual drive and physical stamina will be heightened and getting answers may become faster. The worst: You may find that you need to practice more patience. Use or consider techniques that help bring calm and balance to your metabolism. The sign of Aries may figure more prominently.

NUDE BAR

For Aries: Your sexuality may be heightened; try not to be selfish and be sure that there is “water” in the pool before you dive in. For Virgo: Check your intention, review possible outcomes before you go forward in a partnership with a Leo. It would be better to visualize a positive outcome for all involved. For All Signs: If you choose to do self-analysis, be ready to embrace “what is” rather than repel it. Since the end of last month, it may have felt as though there was more intensity, drama and passion on the planet; the beginning of this month brings peaks and valleys of the calm; go with the flow. Kathleen Savio and Stacey Peterson - Is It Possible Here? Domestic Violence Hurts Everyone By Charles Bennett Jr. Of course it is possible here, it is possible anywhere. It could be any one of our mothers, sisters or daughters. As we all know now, after more than seven years, Scott Peterson has been convicted for the death of his wife, Laci Peterson, and is suspected in the disappearance of his college girlfriend Kathleen Savio.

When we hear about stories like this, most of us do not entertain the thought that something like this could happen in our own community. Hopefully it never will; however, the reality is that it can. Domestic violence is a crime of control. It does not see the color of skin, marital status, sexual preference, level of education, age or even gender. That is right, not even gender; however, most domestic violence victims are women. In many cases, it usually starts with verbal abuse or a slight shove. If not addressed at that point, it almost always gets worse as the abuser will think that it is ok. It can escalate into a push, a slap, a punch, severe beatings and even rape. Some examples of abuse include but are not limited to: name-calling or putdowns, withholding money, sexual assault, keeping

a partner from relationships with friends and family, stopping a partner from seeking employment, actual or threatened physical harm, stalking and intimidation. Here are some startling statistics: one out of three women in America have been physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives. Between 40 percent and 60 percent of men who abuse women also abuse children. Approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually. Approximately 324,000 women experience violence by an intimate partner annually during pregnancy. In 2000, 1,247 women and 440 men were killed by an intimate partner. Additionally, statistic show that children who live in homes where domestic violence occurs are more likely to be abused and/or neglected and even though they may not be physically harmed, they may have emotional and behavioral problems. Further, as children grow older and enter into relationships, they may think that it is ok or normal to abuse or be abused.

In most cases, the abuser will apologize, promise that it will never happen again, blame the victim and say that the abuse was not as bad as the victim claims. In any case, it is imperative to get out of the relationship as it will continue and likely get worse. Better yet,

at the first sign of abuse, whether emotional or physical, get out! Unfortunately, many victims are afraid to leave. This is exactly what the abuser wants. If this is the case, notify someone close i.e. a family member, friend or neighbor who would be willing to call the police or a local organization that will provide assistance.

If you witnesses domestic violence, please call the police immediately, as it may prevent serious injury or could even save a life. The first Neighborhood Watch was formed because a woman was raped and murdered and no one did anything to save her or help apprehend her attacker. How would anyone of us feel if a loved one was a victim of abuse? How would we feel if they were seriously injured or killed? Even worse, if it was witnessed and those who witnessed the abuse stood by and did nothing because they did not want to get involved or thought it was not their problem? For more information about domestic violence or how to help someone who is a victim, contact your local law enforcement agency and/or battered women’s shelter.

Atrium Presents “Doris and Me, a Sentimental Journey” Cabaret Show for the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre Story and Photos by Pat Krause RANCHO MIRAGE, CA - Actor and Singer Scott Drier performed his “Doris and Me, a Sentimental Journey” cabaret show for the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre at The Atrium in Rancho Mirage on Sept 8 and 9. The Atrium is a small, intimate theatre that is perfect for shows like this which holds only 86 seats. Guests get a different feel with the performers and can meet them after the shows. Drier has had a lifelong obsession with songstress, actress and author Doris Day. His love affair started as a young man as their careers have taken the same turns in their lives. He listens to

her music and writes to her daily. He has seen all 39 of her movies and named them all in about a minute for the audience. Drier told the audience her name was Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff and changed it to Doris Day after the song, “Day After Day.” He mentioned her several marriages and her one son, Terry, who died of cancer. He told the audience about many little known stories of her life and career. He retold a dream he had of meeting her in person which he still hopes to be able to do one day. Drier sang her hit songs and explained which movies they came from. He sang the songs in his own style with his beautiful voice.

He was accompanied on the piano by Johnny May, who had piano solos during some of the songs and even sang with Drier on a song. Both men are extremely talented and make a great team. The audience sang along during “Que Sera Sera,” Doris Day’s signature song. The piano that was used was restored Actor and Singer Scott Drier

and donated by the Steinway Society of the Desert for performances. The Coachella Valley Repertory also offers plays and Luminary Luncheons during the year. The next event will be a luncheon presenting actor George Chakiris on Wednesday, Sept. 1. Luncheons are by Lulu’s and Acqua Pazza restaurants. Rancho Las Palmas is a big sponsor for the theatre. CV REP Artistic Director Ron Celona is presenting three major productions this year. This cultural Theater will be a big hit in the Valley. Check out CVREP.org.

Green Your Skin Routine Clairvoyant Beauty Products

Your skin is delicate, so why would you use harsh chemicals to pamper it? According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the average woman applies 200 chemicals to her skin each day. But no matter what skincare issues you may have, you can turn to natural remedies and products to help revive the look of your skin, without damaging it with harmful substances. Inspired by her grandmother’s natural approach to skincare, Lexie Masterson, former actress, model and sister of Mary Stuart Masterson, founded Clairvoyant Beauty, an all-natural and vegan line of aromatherapeutic products based on the skinsoothing recipes her grandmother cooked up in the kitchen. Masterson has built upon her grandmother’s knowledge, updating her products to incorporate new discoveries in skincare science. “I wanted to provide women with a more natural alternative to taking care of their skin, without using harsh chemicals,” Masterson explains. With this in mind, Masterson shares the following tips for dealing with common skincare issues, naturally: For dry skin, Masterson turns to rich avocado. “The unsaturated fatty acids soften your skin, while stimulating natural oil production. Apply to clean skin for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water,” explains

Masterson. It’s important to treat your skin with a moisture-rich product daily. Look for one that contains essential fatty acids (EFAs), like those in avocado, such as the Clairvoyant Beauty Balancing Rosehip Oil & Hibiscus Facial Serum. Rosehip Oil is a rich source of omega-3, omega-6 and Vitamin F, and its Vitamin C is high in gamma linoleic acid (GLA). Hibiscus, with its natural astringent and antioxidant properties, blends perfectly with the rosehip oil, creating a synergistic combination for all skin types, even the most sensitive. To reduce oil production, Masterson recommends whipping up a mask using strawberries, an egg white and honey. “The strawberries - rich in salicylic acid - are great for treating acne and the honey hydrates the skin, while delivering antibacterial properties,” explains Masterson. To make, add 1/2 cup of fresh strawberries, one egg white and 2 teaspoons of honey to a blender and mix. Apply to your face and neck for 20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. For deep cleansing that doesn’t strip the skin, try Clairvoyant Beauty Detoxifying Clay Cleanser with DMAE, a natural anti-aging nutrient derived from fish oil that extends the life of cells and inhibits cross-linking of proteins, giving the skin a toned and firm appearance.
